Honestly… The title says it all! From the Arizona desert in the southwestern United States, to seaside St. Andrews in Scotland… We were told the absolute best fish and chips we could have would be found here at Cromar’s. And without a doubt, that’s exactly what they were! Fantastic portions, perfect fish, excellent chips (and we were lucky enough to meet the owner and chat for a bit). I cannot possibly recommend this place enough!

Came here with high expectations after reading the many positive reviews. Maybe we got them on an off day but we were very disappointed with our lunch. The batter on the fish was soggy and nothing special, the chips were overcooked and pretty tasteless. The tartare sauce was very good, as was the service, but at £35.02 for two portions of bang verage fish and chips, a portion of tartare sauce and a small bottle of water we won't be back in a hurry.

Absoloutely worst terrible experience except for a few things which God put there which made it nice eg. The song traitor by Olivia Rodrigo in particular… I was disappointed because I tried to come here for my deep fried pizza at 10.45 because I knew that was exactly what I craved and needed to eat at I wanted to satisfy that. they told me that I should come back at 11.30 so I was patient and gave them a second chance (and decoacito song was nice aswell btw), however when i came back at this specific time they still hadn’t made it purposely to annoy me and i could tell they wanted me to go away :( I tried to have a deeper relationship with them by talking about the music and dancing and things and the signs I liked in their store and the notebook and pen cus im a writer and love writing anyways yeah they were mean to me :( buttt have to admit the pizza did taste nice

Our guide to the Scottish Lowlands, Stuart, recommended that we try Cromar’s for the classic fish and chips for lunch. And so we made our way there, in spite of the rain and lined up. I am not normally into battered and fried foods. So I was dreading all the greasy, soggy batter, the stale smell of old frying oil, tasteless old fish. What we got instead was a crispy lightly-breaded non-greasy fresh fish, haddock we were told, and chips (fries) that were equally crisp and not greasy either. The tartar sauce went well with the fish. I tried the vinegar and salt and it too worked well with the chips. We were also advised that fish and chips went well with beer. We got some Innis and Gunn. It had a sweet-ish finish to it. I’m not sure about beer with the food but my husband said it went well together. I guess I’ll take his word for it. 😜

It was nice Fish and Chips but nothing overly special. The problem is the price and the portion size. It was probably £3 more than it should be and the portion wasn’t huge. It wasn’t in any way bad just over priced for what it was. Would probably try elsewhere next time.

We’ve been to Cromars many times over the years - last time was May 23 where we’ve always had lovely fish and chips - albeit on the pricey side, but our last visit in February 24 was a complete letdown. Fish was greasy and not fresh at all, chips were dry and overcooked, mushy peas tasteless - portions smaller than previously (a blessing in this case) but still expensive. We had to wait 25mins for this delight too even though we were the only people in the que in the shop at the time. I hope it was all a one off but well not be back.

I hadn't been in Cromars....or St Andrews for a year or two but thankfully some things never change and Cromars is one of them....I was a very successful business man for many years and most of my success was thanks to picking the right people to showcase my company and Wendy in Cromars is such a person.... You are hardly in the door when you hear the most enthusiastic and genuine welcome which is one of the most important aspects of such a business..... Wendy looked after the six of us royally and took our picture ( which we hope to see somewhere somehow ) having gone for the six nations special of their famous fish and chips and a lovely cold can of lager 😋. As I mentioned earlier I had not been here for a while but I immediately remembered the welcoming Lass who owns ? And or runs this place so well.... We will definitely be back much sooner 😋😃

It has been a few years since we last went to cromars. It was in our opinion in the top 2 fish and chip shops in Scotland alongside tailend. This trip was different though. We had 4 fish suppers and a white pudding supper. It cost us £65 and if we ate it in the restaurant I would have asked for my money back. The chips were under cooked, they had no crispiness and the potato was hard in the middle. The fish was over cooked tough and dry and completely inedible. The white pudding was like a flavourless doughball. Nobody finished their meal. Last time this place was amazing but today it was the worst fish and chips we have ever had.

Visited Cromar's for tea tonight after bypassing many of St Andrews bars and restaurants only to wish that we'd gone somewhere else! Service really slow, even although chip shop wasn't that busy, no interaction from staff, apart from when taking your order, tables needing cleaned and empty fish and chips cartons lying on the window sill and staff were swearing quite openly when in discussion with each other, despite customers being able to hear. We are Scottish and fae Fife, and we wondered how visiting tourists would view this restaurant as it has a good reputation. Unfortunately it was very disappointing and we wouldn't recommend.

Brought my grandson here for lunch. Fish and chips arrived just as a gentleman pressed the fire alarm button thinking it was the button to open the door - chaos as the staff did not know how to turn it off. We were all asked to wait outside just as it started to snow ! Even eating quickly the meal soon became cold which meant he only ate half ! He did say it tasted very nice when hot. If I do come back with my daughter and grandson before they return home to Melbourne I would hope that the shop would replace his meal free of charge. Also perhaps the staff should be trained in how to turn the fire alarm off if accidentally activated (we saw the gentleman press it so there was no emergency)

Takeaway chips from Cromars at 8.45p.m. on a week night? Please don't waste your money. We paid £3.50 per portion for what would amount to perhaps 2 medium-sized potatoes. Counter service was poor with staff more interested in their personal conversation than paying attention to customers. However, we would probably have overlooked all of the above if the main event - the chips - had lived up to Cromars self-proclaimed reputation as 'the best fish and chips in Scotland' . Unfortunately, we were sadly disappointed. The chips were truly appalling - almost cold, dry and wrinkled. You know that feeling of being well-and-truly ripped off? That will be my abiding memory of Cromar's. Needless to say, we won't be back.

Overpriced and substandard fish and chips. The batter lacks any consistency and the chips are greasy but mostly chipped too small and feels like the bottom of the basket every time..dry and burnt. I’m sure the actual fish is ok but such is the mess of the rest of a supper, it’s hard to tell. We used to debate which Chippy in St Andrews was the best. Cromars or the Tailend. Hands down the Tailend is far better value. Plus you don’t need to wait half an hour every time in a queue. And I don’t buy the ‘made fresh every time’ excuse since it wouldn’t make any difference to the taste if there was orders made and being kept warm, like every other chippy. No it’s a cost cutting tactic to avoid any waste at the customers expense. The ordering and service process is terrible and takes more time than it does to actually make a fish supper. Won’t be back.

The standard has definitely slipped over the last couple of years. If you’re here, you have to try the fish and chips. It’s as good as people say. Most certainly one of the best fish suppers I’ve ever had. Light, crispy batter and high quality haddock. Special mention for the mushy peas which were very tasty....

Haven't been to Cromars for a while so decided to pay them a visit for a bag of chips. Was a wee bit disappointed because although the chips were quite good, the portion was small, and they weren't hot. Might be a while before I'm...

Nice fish supper done in a pleasantly crispy batter. Have had better chips but they were still enjoyable to eat. However, prices are steep and while this is the best in St Andrews, I struggled with this on a value for money basis

Absolutely brilliant fish and chips. So fresh and crispy . I just don’t get why mayonnaise is extra charge but it’s fine not worth taking a star off :)

Lovely small restaurant serving the most enormous and delicious fish and chips I have ever had. Located in the historic St Andrews village, you simply must try them when you are there. If you are doing a day trip from Edinburgh, make this a definite...

The fish and onion rings were too oily and in our opinion poorly cooked. No proper metal utensils, no proper ceramic plates, no cups, no glasses. The chair was also dirty with crumbs, so had to use the rag to clean it by myself. Very...

Went for steak night but extremely disappointed. Asked for medium steak but was more rare.Few soggy chips, hard peas and two underdone soggy onion rings. No salad as advertsed. Food was also cold. Asked for a prosecco and was told had no cold ones . Was given small one off top shelf behind bar but when I opened it it was completely flat and very yellow so I think it must have been on the shelf a long while! Lady opened big bottle which again came from top shelf so was not cold but was bubbly. Can't believe there was no bottles in wine fridge. Sticky toffee pudding was good though. Seeing as there was just one other couple in the restaurant there really was no excuse for steak meal being so poor as kitchen not rushed. Won't be rushing back!!!

What a venue !! Charming with a historical room to be seen to be believed (clipper room) ! I cannot say enough about the owners and staff who made me feel welcomed and could not do enough ! I was there for a music gig with friends and the music room venue was brilliant , atmospheric and intimate ! The hotel is in a lovely location with historical sites , coastal walks and a golf course nearby.

When the weather turns cold, shops closed, you don’t want a restaurant, just a cuppa, Alexander and George will make you welcome. Enticed by the chips! Feel much better now. Thanks guys!

Having always enjoyed meals at The Doll’s House we imagined this was a mere name change, and were drawn in by the offer of a reasonably priced set menu all day Wednesday and Thursday. Inside the decor was smart enough and the waitress pleasant. However they were unaware of the set menu offer clearly advertised outside, and then said they’d still put our meal through at that price so long as we didn’t order anything expensive ! This wasn’t easy as five dishes were already sold out by 7.30, leaving little choice. The soups were ok, as was my deer, but my wife’s ratatouille was the most ridiculous item I’ve ever seen offered as main dish- three slices of undercooked courgette, a few tomatoes swimming in a watery sauce. We skipped desserts and were presented with a bill of £72, the manager having forgotten her promise. On appeal she applied a discount, but £58 was still very expensive for an experience that could charitably be described as poor. I’d steer well clear - there is no shortage of places to eat in St Andrews.
