We had a lovely stay of one night in March, before the daffodils were really out and after the snowdrops had bloomed in the estate. We could still see them on the beautiful woodland nature walk around the estate though. I would love to go back when the daffs are out! The building itself is beautiful and decorated in traditional Scottish style, complete with a bespoke tartan carpet in some hallways, inspired by the family tartans. I loved all the historic information about the house and the local artwork, which is for sale. The service was excellent and the food well deserving of the AA rosettes. The trout starter was exquisite, the beef really excellent and the chocolate desert with creme fraiche ice cream a real treat. The two-course traditional scottish breakfast was very good too, with options to suit all tastes and appetites. Staff were very helpful and the receptionist friendly and efficient. We had a room on the top floor, in the attic basically, with some sloping ceilings. The room was fairly small but plenty big enough for both of us. The double bed was two singles made up together, which is great. The mattress was quite soft for me but fine. The room had a great welcome tray with not just tea and coffee but also shortbread and whisky. Best welcome tray ever! As a hotelier myself, I am always looking out for these little details that really make a stay special. The bathroom was very large with a tub and a shower that worked fine though with plenty of hot water, though it was a little difficult to get the right temperature at first. Like I say, we will look out for more offers and come back again for dinner, bed and breakfast.

We invited 25 guests to afternoon tea in the Conservatory to celebrate a milestone birthday. The staff were wonderful, the event ran very smoothly, the food was delicious and the birthday girl was delighted with the event. They warned us in advance that sometimes the Conservatory can be a bit chilly, but we all thought it was a perfect temperature - the log fire burning in the adjoining bar and the heaters in the room made it very comfortable.

Overall an excellent experience. Friendly, one feels 'looked after'. Local food, always delicious. Feels pricey by Borders standards, but quality wise it really is a cut above anything else in the area. The same food and experience in Edinburgh would be eye wateringly expensive.

Pizzas had far too much faux mozzarella making them greasy and stodgy, and so little topping you could hardly taste it. Bases were not at all crispy.

Starter was nice but that was just bread with tomatoes so nothing cooked. Main course Traditional home cooked beef lasagne..... This lacked beef mince, in fact it was more like trying and spot the mince! Plus it had a hard lump of rubbery cheese in the lasagna. Is this really Italian? I think a pint of birra moretti was priced at £5.00 but charged £5.95. Over £25 for a poor meal and a beer. Basic cooking and over priced and if you want better food then go elsewhere. Plus the main waiter guy was very impatient at times and seemed more interested in a group of customers rather than individuals.

This is our go to Indian Takeaway when in the area. The food is always superb and never disappoints us. Just wish it was more local to us!!!!
