Plenty of parking, and we slept great there! Remodeled bathrooms. It’s just on the edge of town which was nice and we walked in several times. The hosts were attentive and accommodating. Food was top notch in their restaurant too. I don’t know how they do it but they have a lot of menu options yet all dishes were fantastic. The view at breakfast and dinner is beautiful. Large glass windows looking at the bay. The hotel is historic. Used to a mansion that belong to a distillery owner 200 years ago, and then it was converted to a maternity ward. Many of Campbeltown’s residents were born there! And it’s been a hotel for the past 30 years. It’s rustic but that adds to the charm. Slept great.

We drove on from Campletown with a heavy heart. Directly on the bay. Unfortunately our room faces the back yard. We were seated in the drawing room for dinner. Unfortunately it took almost 50 minutes to get to the table from here. The food in the evening was very tasty. Breakfast freely selectable. With the view of the sea... priceless. The water was way too hot in the shower.

More appearance than reality. The house is impressive. The boss - well. The service staff overwhelmed. We had to get on the ferry and waited forever. Not really a problem on vacation. But we wouldn't have come to Islay. The room was bad (number 14). See image.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Craigard. My room was very clean and well laid out for a single, the bed was clean and comfortable. I had dinner both nights I was there and the food was delicious, well priced and served by friendly, knowledgeable and efficient staff. I would certainly recommend this hotel for anyone visiting the area.

A brief overnight stay in Campbeltown was required and after a quick phone call , Ted (the dog) and SelKie 🦭 were booked in. The building is a lovely Italian style mansion house, completed from Henry Clifford's design in 1882. It proudly overlooks the sea loch and looks pretty impressive. It was actually the home of one of the first whisky distillers, Wllm McErzie (of the now closed Lochruan Distillery). The town once had 28 such buildings and was the whisky capital of Scotland, although now there are just 2. It is relatively near to the Island of Ghia and also a famous links golf course, a short distance just north of the town ,The Machrihanish. The hotel is pretty unique and was also once a maternity hospital in a former life between 1943 and 1973, so the birthplace of many local baby boomers called the 'Craigard Babies'. The hotel is a labour of love for its owners and has 13 rooms. It continues to require repairs and ongoing renovations and it's position on the harbour wall probably doesn't help, facing all that nature can throw at her. The 2 words I would use to describe the hotel would be 'quirky' and 'homely'. Perfect for people who like to stay in unique hotels and be treated like one of the family. We had room 9 (Ghia) which was at the rear but many rooms have a seaview I understand. The room has all you need, was clean and had some nice traditional touches. The only negative was the noise of the bathroom fan (akin to a Vulcan Bomber leaving the runway!) the moment you turned on the bathroom light. The bed was very comfortable with lovely duvet and pillows. There's a weird arrangement with Sky TV where whichever resident chooses their channel...everyone else must watch it too but rooms had great WiFi and Freeview TVs so it's not a problem and who would want to watch Sky in anycase ! I also decided to dine in the hotel and had the rack of lamb special. I was the only other guest but the dining room has a great view across the Loch and town. The menu is exceptionally good value and they clearly use many local suppliers (all detailed in the plastic wallet menu) which is great. It's a homely cooking style, simple, straight forward honest food. The wine list is also very reasonable and extensive for such a small hotel. Service was friendly too although I did get left to my own devices and ended up leaving the restaurant with my main course plate left to be collected. I had fancied pudding (some local Ghia Ice-cream) but I might have had to wait until breakfast. Shame as I'd have happily spent more money on that and coffee and probably a nightcap. B'fast was served until 10am and was included in the rate which was just under £100 (although it was March and I'd expect that to double in the summer at least). Campbeltown itself is a nice traditional Scottish town. It sits at the tail of the Kintyre peninsula. There are some lovely buildings, probably as a result of it's rich sea trading & whisky heritage. It was lovely walking round at night with many buildings lit up and there were also a number of great cafes, bars and restaurants to enjoy. Ps The room was really handy for the dog too as it was close to the fire exit to the rear garden.
