Costa Coffee in Barnard Castle in County Durham

Tea was Luke warm Don’t have any sachets of salt so egg sandwich was very bland Hubby had a latte which was ok Need to bring bk salt

I've been to this Costa a couple of times, now this review is only a 1 star because of the delicious drinks, otherwise I would have gone 0 however I believe that all Costas make drinks the exact same. Now this place is not special and is not ideal for children. The staffs behaviour is disgusting. One time I ordered a hot chocolate and got recommended a vitamin b tea. The healthiest thing on the menu. Then when I said no thank you, she asked me if I was sure and I replied "yes, thank you" she instantly rolled her eyes at me, walked away and continued to whisper onto her fellow co-workers about my weight. This was not ok. I am glad the drinks were good otherwise I would have called out the manager... Do not recommend

Costa Coffee in Barnard Castle is a typical version of the chain. From a design perspective it is a tad bland but it is clean and tidy with plenty of seating, including a pleasant outdoor area looking onto the castle ruins. Service was efficient and the coffee good.

Really good cappuccino and toast and costas own oats biscuits. Welcoming atmosphere and good service.

Great service and food quality as always. Staff very friendly, outside area perfect in this weather.

Easy visit! served straight away no queuing for table pleasant staff, bit pricey for coffee and cheese and tomato toasty, £7.50 but enjoyable Sunday morning breakfast. 10/10

Sat in costa good atmosphere, clean and tidy, enjoyable coffee and cheese toasty! Pricy but you pay for what you get 10/10. 3 staff not so service was swift. I would recommend.

This is possibly one of the most efficient, friendliest and welcoming Costa branches. The service levels are always top notch the staff are a credit to the company and do a fantastic job. I am pretty regular I just don't have the ability to walk past without calling in for a hot chocolate always served to spec nice and hot and as requested. The outside seating area is a bit of a well kept secret garden but is a perfect place to relax and savor your beverage. Top Job Staff

I wanted to pay £5 using a gift card and pay the rest by my bank card and I already scanned my gift card and didn't notice that a staff member took all of the money from my bank account instead. Not great. You have to have eyes at the back of your head when dealing with staff.

First coffe indoors but actually went outdoors to a small quite nice area at the rear Coffe as usual for Costa staff great and outside pleasant. All well spaced Covid excellent

I was looking for a smaller drink so decided to try a mocha Cortado which was very nice indeed, strong coffee with a chocolate taste but without sweetness. Very good indeed.

Called here for a break whilst shopping I had skinny latte hubby had caramel latte you can’t beat Costa the staff were amazing very friendly and helpful can’t do enough for you

I visited Costa in Barnard Castle recently and can honestly say it was an amazing experience. The whole covid issue was well managed and professional. The two young ladies, Caroline and Rebecca, who served me were so friendly and polite explaining different coffee to me and my friend. Nothing seemed a bother yo them . Whilst we were having our coffee the shop became bysy with customers but the staff remained happy and polite. I live in Barnard Castle and wil definitely make it my local coffee shop from now on .

Honestly the worst experience. Horrid coffee - honestly didn’t complain bc I didn’t want another staff member anywhere near me. Already I had it brought to my table without gloves. Staff rude & disrespectful. No social distancing observed at all - no one in queue wearing masks & staff couldn’t have cared less. Coffee was nasty & I felt unsafe. I’ve always disliked this Costa due to their staff but now this cements that this branch is honestly the worst. Won’t be returning. Awful staff, awful coffee, disgusting lack of even a vague respect for any COVID rules.

We had a coffee and cake in the cafe and as usual it was very nice. The atmosphere is very relaxing and if your lucky you might see some famous tv personalitys who pop in regularly.

A usual Costa outlet, clean with the usual coffees and eats-nothing to shout about-the staff a little stiff and notm very customer orientated

Staff friendly shop clean as they were sweeping it while I was been served. Asked for extra hot and got a warm short measure. After a 3 week break from costa it has not improved any still hit and miss. Not consistent any more.

Had to brush down seats .Floor dirty. Coffee weak. Not what I have come to expect from Costa. Costa need to check them out.

Stopped off in this costa coffee store while I was visiting Barnard castle. The staff in this store were friendly. The staff made sure the store was clean. While I was having my coffee the staff made sure the floor and tables were kept clean. The coffee was fine but I do wish that they made the Americano with more taste. Other than that it was okay. The staff in this store are more friendly and less rude than the one in High Ouse gate in York.

Great service in this store, had a lovely soy hot chocolate. Really relaxed atmosphere inside the store.

A very lovely cortado, but not the best Costa! It was clean and pleasant but not outstanding. A good place for a good coffee though.

Stopped off here for a coffee, staff very friendly and actually advised us that the reusable cup we had was a medium and not a large size. ( As our local Costa stated it was a large cup).The lady who served us, explained the cup was in fact a medium, she was correct. When I looked into it. We had been paying for a large coffee for some time when entering our own local Costa Coffee shop. So thank you for correctly advising us and only charging us for a medium size.Great customer service, friendly staff and great coffee.Thankyou to the young lady who served us on this day.

Costa in Barnard Castle is lovely.Friendly staff and a large spacious area for sitting.My only concern would be toilet cleanliness. On the day I visited it seemed to be over flowing with used nappies.I'm still rating Costa as very good, because the above concern must have just been an oversight.

I love coming into this coffee shop. The staff are always cheerful, it matters to me that they ask me if I want my usual or something else. I am quite into cold brew at the moment. I really like the sun trap outside area at the back that gives you glimpses of Scar Top and the Castle walls.

As a regular diner, sometimes it’s very enjoyable, your made to feel welcome but sometimes your made to feel abit of a nuisance as some staff carry on there own conversations whilst serving you. I find this quite rude.

Had a lovely time at this busy establishment in Barnard Castle, had an Earl Grey tea. It was very nice and satisfying.

The coffee is fine, it is clean enough but every time I go in the staff have friends and family in with babies and young children and the babies become the focus of all staff.

Called for a double espresso to take out but asked for plastic top to be left off. "Can't do that, health and safety". Perfectly acceptable so I asked for top to be left off just long enough to put sugar in before replacing top. "Can't do that either, health & safety". Next time I may ask the staff to put the sugar in first before coffee goes in or top goes on...or would that be entering dangerous territory?

No other word for it this place is disgusting, considering it's a chain it has got to be the worst Costa I've ever been in and I go to Costa a fair bit as you can generally expect a decent standard of coffee and service. I think when I called in there was probably 5 staff working, the place was a mess, a dirty bucket of water next to the area you collect your drinks from, trays and dirty cups everywhere, one member of staff was being fed seemingly given priority over customers and I've seen zoo animals with better table manner, gross. Seriously whoever is the area manager or higher up the management chain sort this place out the staff are a disgrace, rude and uninterested. Thank goodness for the number of small independent coffee shops and cafes around they put this place to shame, just awful.

As I'm accustomed to many Costas throughout the country I did find this one in Barnard Castle particularly good. My flat white was nicely created and the staff were happy to pop two tea bags int a pot for my wife as she normally finds Costa tea weak and bland so an extra bag just pepped the drink up.

We normally avoid chain coffee shops but this was the only one open on Sunday morning and it had a dog friendly area . The coffee shop looked ok but the garden area where we had to sit with the dog was a disgrace , filthy tables and chairs with dirty ashtrays and litter on the deck . Coffee was very disappointing weak and lack flavour . Staff were nice and friendly .

Costa are convenient and normally consistentt. On our visit, they were not very busy and it would appear having a training session with an unusual number of people behind the counter. Service for a couple of coffees was slow. Two tables were taken up with a computer and files and every other unoccupied table needed clearing, Not a good customer experience.

Popped in here as it is open later than other cafes which close at 5 typically. The coffee was good. The cafe is a bit dark inside but there was a sign mentioning outdoor seating so maybe in better weather there is a garden.

Great menu, skinny latte was very good but the surroundings let the place down badly, sticky tables spilt sugar on seats and tables the place needs a really good clean from top to bottom every where you looked was dusty grubby and just not clean, it wasn't fitly but thats no excuse at just after ten in the morning you can't really even blame busy trade just basic and simple poor cleaning!!!!

We stopped here on our way to Newcastle for the ferry to Amsterdam. Costa isn't my favourite coffee but this is quite a nice little coffee shop to take a break.

Repetir visita. Cafetería agradable cadena (aunque tengo el té). Personal amable y con una agradable zona de asientos frente a las ruinas del castillo. . . . . .

Called in for a coffee/tea with tea cake whilst visiting the town centre. Great to be able to have soya milk. Large tasty tea cakes and a creamy coffee. Clean tables and a friendly team working. Good service.

I am a Costa fan and some do not come up to standard in the coffee making stakes, I am pleased to say this one does!!! Hot tasty coffee and lovely service.

Visited here for a quick drink and snack today. We had a toastie, mint hot chocolate and what was supposed to be a Salted Caramel Muffin. Toastie was toasted on just the one side, hot chocolates were just about warm and was served the incorrect Muffin. And the toilets were unclean with paper towels and water all over the floor. We visited around 3pm and it wasn't exactly busy. The staff were friendly enough and we just didn't bother to moan about all the things mention. I really do hope a member of staff sees this to perhaps ensure that future customers receive a better experience. Perhaps the worst Costa Coffee I have been in! Lots of other coffee places around Barnard Castle so plenty of options for people travelling to the area. Come on Costa, time to up your game!

Called here twice on Saturday and Sunday mornings as we were staying in the area .We had flat whites chocolate cornflake ,caramel & chocolate crisp cakes .The flat whites were full of flavour and so enjoyable –nice sweet snacks too

Visited Costa last week for a meeting with our wedding photographer. The wifi was not working which we were only told after ordering, drinks were expensive and not even full, tea cups dirty and the toilet was disgusting. Only positive was the staff were friendly.

Always enjoy a Costa & this one is always friendly even when busy & the coffee is always of a good standard. It's looking a bit tired though especially the toilet,its very grubby looking & doesn't appear very clean. But all in all highly recommended.

El capuccino estaba delicioso y la torta que pedí también. No espero mucho más de un cadena de cafeterías. Al fondo tiene un patio abierto que vale la pena visitar, sobre todo si hay algo de sol.

Its a Costa which though no great fan of coffee shops is nonethess my fave as they pay UK taxes. This is a nice decent sized coffee shop which well back into the building and had a seating area out back (though this also a smoking area so that rather takes the pleasure out of having an al fresco seating area). Good value by cofee shop standards with friendly staff on the several occassions i've visisted since last September. A decent place for chain coffee.

Unfriendly service, take-it-leave-it attitude. Nice coffe, but expensive. Limited range of food which I found bland, uninteresting and expensive. I cannot recommend this establishment.

My husband and I often visit this Costa Coffee, the coffee is excellent and there's a selection of tasty foods. There's speciality coffee's from season to season so there's always something new. Clean establishment and you can also sit outdoors. The only thing that let's it down is the customer service. On a few occasions we have been greeted by unfriendly and rude staff, however usually the staff are helpful and polite.

During my stay in Barnard Castle I stopped by Costa's a couple of times, mainly for a light morning bite. I found the café spacious and bright and the staff was friendly and quick to serve. I liked their pre-packaged Cheese and Bacon Toasties which I usually had with a bag crisps. I’m not a coffee person, so I normally had juice. They also have a good selection of delicious baked goods, which I admit that I did try. I will be back soon.

Lovely coffee, trendy, clean establishment. Customer service could've been better. Only one same sex, disabled toilet area which was eye wateringly whiffy.

It was the first time ive been to Barnard Castle Costa, the staff behind counter seemed uninterested in making eye contact. It was not clear where you are supposed to stand to get served and whilst stood at counter with cash in hand found exisiting customers appeared nearer the till and were served immediately. so a dissappointing experience.

Mornings just wouldn't be the same in Barnard Castle with out good old Costa!! the coffee is always great the staff are very friendly and the surroundings are comfortable, just what you need before a day at work!

Location is in town center with ample seating. Coffee is ok, pastries a little dry and stale. Would probably try somewhere else next time.

The cafe stays open to 6pm or so and gets busier as the other cafes close. Lack of staff meant that space was lacking as they closed off certain areas. Staff were friendly and folk feel at home as a number seemed to be settling in for the long haul! A children's area is provided and a 'free kitten and an espresso' given to unattended offspring :-) Toilets are in short supply, parking is tricky here with lots of charity and other shops to browse and enjoy. Prices are normal and range of snacks and cakes is the usual.

Plenty of tables with plesant staff. But alas let down by the disgusting state of the sticky tables and slippy decking at the rear. The ash trays full of floating dog ends were very off puting, this outside seating area could have been very plesant otherwise

My family and I had been away on the East coast and decided to travel back via the ancient town of Barnard Castle. During our visit we decided to go for a coffee. We were greeted very warmly by a young lady called CHLO. She was courteous and very efficient, nothing too much trouble. She was a breath of fresh air after some of the bad weather we had had. It is a pity all other employees in other establishments could not raise their standards to that of CHLO.Thank you

This branch is fine for a quick coffee and was quiet and comfortable when we were there. They advertise free wifi but we weren't able to access it, neither were other customers, the staff said it was 'probably broken.'

I prefer Starbucks coffee to be honest- however, I don't mind a costa every now and again. This branch is a big disappointment in most ways possible. No likey.

Called in here for coffee was busy but not overly busy, tables were slow in being cleared, just a bog standard coffee shop, there is plenty others in Barnard Castle to choose from.On a down side there is only one toilet which is used for baby changing, male, female and disabled, not good

You can always trust a Costa and this one lived up to its best standards. We were offered a new coffee to try and assured that if we were not satisfied it would be replaced with our normal coffee at no charge. We loved the new coffee and the very friendly staff and enjoyed our Costa experience. clean tables,comfortable seating ,good food and drink and of course Newspapers.

Plenty of tables spare and decent choice of sandwiches and cakes. Efficient, friendly service. Crying baby aside, we had a pleasant time.

Great coffee as always from costa which is probably the best coffee house. There is more seating than expected as the shop front is small but the inside is long. There is additional seating outdid out the back with views over the castle, great on a warm sunny day. A couple of downsides, the parking in barny (barnard castle) is not great there is parking immediately outside along the road and in the market area outside but it's pot luck and sometimes if a markets on no parking. There is additional parking at morrisons which you have to pay for but it's a very short quick walk through a little lane and archway and your back into the market square. My only couple of gripes about costa here is the panini with any meat in are always cold inside and there is only one toilet which is around a corner often with a queue. Apart from that it's a great place.

Called today on a family day out shopping. There was ample seating available and a nice box of toys in a children's corner for the youngster to play with. The prices were the standard Costa prices. Service was quite quick and the staff were very friendly and helpful.

This Costa, as a branch is pretty good. However, in general I prefer Starbucks much more. Despite that though, the coffee is well priced and nice. Service isn't as personal but is still welcoming and the staff are friendly. Would most likely return.

I often pop in on way to work. At an ungodly hour the staff manage to be happy and efficient. The coffee is excellent and cakes great too.

Coffee was ok. The display of cakes etc looked inviting. The staff were pleasant enough but for me the main redeeming feature was the availability of WiFi which was a bit of a 'faff on' to access for the first time.The one toilet shared by males/females/disabled/baby changing was a big let down. After queuing to use it, I found the floor to be very wet, it obviously hadn't been checked by staff for some time.Would only be attracted to return by the WiFi availability.

Popped into Barnard Castle on our way to Derby and had a relaxing visit to the local Costa Coffee. The staff were very friendly and we thoroughly enjoyed our coffees. The only criticism was that the unisex toilet had not been checked as per company procedure (chart on toilet door), the floor was wet as was toilet seat and bowl area. The hand wash dispenser was empty and hanging off the wall.

Costa must have got their training right, as the coffee is invariably good in all their branches. The food is also of a good standard if a bit pricey

What else can you say about a cup of coffee except it is always what you ask for & nothing less - which is why I keep going there.
