This is the best coffee shop in St Andrews - but only in terms of the coffee and the food. I love the drinks and the bagels especially are *french kiss* but I would love to be able to come and sit, and enjoy my bagel at a table. The issue is that the already limited seating is taken up by students who have pretty much always finished their drinks. I really think it would be a good idea to have maybe half of the seats reserved for people who just want to come and sit for 10 minutes to have a drink because the shop itself is so nice and clearly very well finished. As a student myself I know there are plenty of study spaces in town so a study free area surely wouldn't meet much resistance? I for one would visit the cafe much more often, instead of just for takeaways. That said, the staff are amazing and the coffee is superb.

Very small bit neatly formed cafe. Lovely vibe, full of people working which was also a downside if you wanted to sit! The coffee was the best we have had for a long long time. No bitterness at all. Also had a vegan cinnamon bun which was lovely. Would love to have tried their lunch bites too as they looked so good but it was too early

With some time to spare before lunch, I'd paused at CombiniCafe's window as I daundered past this understated little place on Market Square in the middle of St Andrews. Understated? That's an understatement! There's hardly any street signage, and it's easily a blink and you miss it spot. There is a menu of sorts in the window, and I was tempted in by their teas. Inside it's very clean-lined, immaculate, and apparently laboratory-themed. Not a lot of seating, but they seem to do a good trade in take aways too. There's some vegan food on offer, but I'd only stopped for tea. And the tea? Well, a very small selection of three regular offer teas, and one special. Really too small a selection, and they should look at increasing this. On this visit, they were all Japanese varieties (in line with the overall theme, but I don't know how coffee fits in...), and all loose leaf (or loose twig and rice in some cases). One good thing is they have loose samples and tasting notes at the counter. And being somewhat a tea connoisseur it was good to see a row of whisks behind the counter for their matcha. But I tried another leaf I was less familiar with. A reasonable price, at £2.80, for a "pot" of a seemingly premium Japanese tea - but there's no clear indication of provenance. Well, I say "pot" - the tea is brewed, or infused, the leaves removed, and the liquor served in what looks like a lab beaker, with a small beaker-shaped glass for the cup. On what was the coldest day of the winter so far, I had my doubts if the glassware would keep the tea warm, but it worked out fine for the time I was there. One quibble about the brewing - for this overtly Japanese-influenced venue, it's definitely not a traditional-style tea ceremony. More of a slightly OCD science experiment. I'd asked how long the tea was infused, and was a bit disappointed to learn it was only 2 minutes. Any green tea - including the Japanese varieties, and the non-tea infusions (like the twiggy one they had on offer) - benefits from longer steeping, to release more of the beneficial chemicals. (And a bitter drink should not be the point here - unidentified floor sweepings of generic "green tea" as in supermarket bags does get bitter with a long steep, but a premium loose leaf tea?) I'd really prefer to have a longer brew, or as is more common, to be served with the tea still steeping, to remove to taste. Even for these "lighter" or more grassy teas, I like to get a stronger flavour. Service is friendly and quick. One drawback is they only accept card payments. Alas the modern day! But they do have a note about this in the window. Like any similar cafe venue in St Andrews, it's evident this is becoming just another spot (like Taste or Zest) where students will park their laptop for half the day, while they chat and date and flirt and do anything but actually study. It's about time these places had a "no laptop" policy - it would help their turnover and revenue and increase the customer base to begin with. So, CombiniCafe? I'm intrigued by what other teas they may source, so I'll likely stop by on another visit to St Andrews. And request a longer infusion!

It took me a while to find it as the sign is easily missed, but once inside it is a treat! By far the best coffee in St Andrews.

So minimalist you can easily miss it. No menu or info at the door to attract you in or comfort you that this isn't a forensic laboratory. However the staff are very welcoming and incredibly well versed about the products on offer and the thinking behind this approach to business. Hyper clean (laboratory) environmental hygiene on display and staff ensuring no crumbs on the floor or dirty surfaces. Just really struggled to understand what was on offer, our options and pricing. Helpful guidance was available from staff but we really just didn't get the point of imposing minimalism to the point of confusing customers - were we expected to have read the website in advance of an unplanned visit? A million miles away from the usual High Street coffee shops and a superb range of specialist drinks made with real care from quality ingredients. We will return now that we understand their business proposition - but it isn't easy from the pavement.

This morning was just a dream of a morning in the newly opened CombiniCafe. It was difficult to find at first because of the lack of signage, but I'm so glad I did. The baristas are friendly and knowledgeable about their coffees and powdered teas. There are very few decisions you have to make because there are only a few options for what to get (LOVE that simplicity), the music isn't distracting, the decor is sleek and simple and lovely, and the light is really nice in this window seat I've been occupying. I'll definitely be frequenting this place. Also, they offered me water, so I don't feel dehydrated in leaving either. Big win for my morning. :)

Through it's minimal take on the coffee and tea experience, CombiniCafe delivers a quaint and mindful time for me and my girlfriend to start the day. We had a delicious oat milk matcha tea latte - something I had never really thought I would enjoy but it's one of the nicest warm drinks I've had. Staff are knowledgeable and very nice, it was not so busy so did not have to wait long. It could use a bit more greenery by the window as it looks a bit too minimal when quiet. That said could be great for a nice and affordable espresso or latte, interested to stop by again on a rainy day ~
