Coffee#1 Totnes in South Hams

Definitely wouldn’t recommend…unless you want the waiting staff to be picking her spot behind the counter and then making coffees without washing her hands…disgusting🤢

Clean welcoming coffee shop. Tasty coffee, tasty not overpriced cakes, arty deco, clean toilet. Friendly staff who even carried my full tray to help me. I'd definitely come back.

Ignored when we walked in as two young girls behind counter were chatting. Waited a couple of minutes then ask for a coffee got a dirty look from one . Then a what do you want. Not a good service at all and the shop was fairly quiet.

Great creamy lattes, warm and tasty. Overall clean, but some of the cutlery and cups had water stains on them, also the teapot from the tea we had was chipped, so it didn't look good.

First coffee wasn't very hot at all but the staff member was very kind and made me a new one. The replacement was absolutely horrible and tasted like, well nothing I can describe. It wasn't crazy hot so not burnt, just like really odd. I was too embarrassed to go back again although the staff member was polite. Really never tasted anything like that. Waste of £6

came in with a couple of pals for a bite n some coffee! asked about what a cake as was unsure of what it was (chocolate nemesis) and was told it back. After being rudely replied to, I have my luke warm coffee slammed down infront of me and have seen how rude some of their staff are. My friend is and has been waiting over a stupid amount of time for a singular sandwich when the family after us got all of theirs before.

Asked about gluten free. Was told to scan the QR code for ingredients... Frankly he didn't care ! Too busy chatting to other female employee.. Shame the coffee 1 at Honiton was excellent

Lovely warm welcome, very friendly staff. The place was very clean and tidy and spacious. Great value for money, lots of choice.

I’m giving up on eating out in England. Does anybody have the slightest pride in their work. We have just spent over £50 on coffee and bad food in this place. How can you not be able to warm a toastie properly. They are pre prepared. All you need to do is heat the thing up. I returned it to a sullen twelve year old who grumbled at me and ten minutes later when everyone else had finished eating it was returned well crispy by a miserable bloke who threw it onto the table in front of me and couldn’t even apologise. Please train your staff or fire them. People vote with their feet and there are a lot of coffee places in Totnes.

I stood and waited, and waited, and waited... The two guys behind the counter sort of noticed me, but had no intention of interrupting their conversation. The guy with the beard eventually came over after I waved at them. No greeting, no apology for keeping me waiting, not a glimmer of a smile, no thanks - he really couldn't be bothered. The coffee was incredibly strong and bitter, quite unpleasant. The panini was brought over to me! Wow! But no serviette, so I had to go and find them for myself. Won't go there again.

Extremely rude staff, more concerned about having a chat with their mates than making your drinks. Avoid at all costs. There’s plenty of other nice coffee shops in Totnes

Not surprised with the pretty terrible reviews. We live just down the road from here, so have visited quite a few times. It has been hit and miss. There's been occasions when they seem so short staffed, the tables are all full of used cups, plates etc. Kind of felt sorry for the one person having to do what appeared to be all of the jobs. Today though, it was wonderfully cool inside and such a relief to be out of the stifling heat outside. Because of this, no-one seemed stressed staff or customers and it had a delightful chilled out vibe despite being a chain cafe and pretty busy. ( something a pretentious new cafe further up the hill might look into, considering they market themselves as a cool vibe place ,but is anything but) One moan though ( picky picky) the paninis are so dry! I'm sure they could improve on that. Bit of salad? Sauces? I nearly cut my mouth on mine haha.

Visited every year since it opened and it’s ok. Nice enough surroundings and pleasant staff, nothing special but is what it is Very much akin to a a major high street set up with similar items on sale at pretty hefty price points Worth a visit mind

Made a special detour for a drink on the way home. Paid for parking and arrived at 540 to be told that they were shut. They weren't even particularly sorry.

Been here on my days off and staff are friendly if you’re local you can’t go into this place without seeing someone you know . I tried the white hot chocolate very rich but very good

Poor service, staff are too busy chatting and despite making eye contact with me did not speak to me or ask what i wanted i had to say could you help me please. No napkins available or stirrers, had to ask for theses, staff handed me one of each despite there being 2 of us. Had to ask for more milk as given very small jug of milk with large coffee, thid was once i had their attention. Queued for toilet next to serving area for over 10 minutes during this time staff walked past me and acknowledged me, but said nothing. eventually the engineer emerged from toilet and announced the toilet was out of order, there was no sign on the door and staff had not informed me despite seeing me standing there and being aware of the engineer on site. Used to enjoy coming to the Totnes coffee #1 but the service level has dropped considerably.

We had lunch today in coffee#1 Totnes. My coffee was awful and I thought twice about taking it back. Second taste convinced me to complain. The staff treated me like something you step in. I said please this coffee is not right. Have you given me your filter coffee from the flask..?? We don't do filter any more was the sharpe reply.. the staff member was not happy to replace my coffee but she did when she noticed the customers backing up... The second cup was better but the staff attitude did not make it taste great. I will not be complaining again about their coffee as we as a family will be going to another coffee shop on the High Street "HILL HOUSE " THEY TREAT THEIR CUSTOMERS VERY WELL!!!

I go here twice a week without fail. now not so sure, ordered tea and cake and I found a dark hair on my plate. This really put me off, They do serve great cakes and lovely pots of tea , and of course delicious coffee. I will give it a try again and see what happens but not sure I will purchase cakes, I do not like hairs in or near my food. You do get good service and its also very clean , apart from little fruit flies, hovering around. The toilets are very clean

Was banned from here after I was apparently rude??!! Was actually just complaining about lack of customer service, general helpfulness etc - I think one is entitled to do that as a paying customer. Anyway, it's somewhere I used to go when I first moved to Totnes because I didn't know any better. I only went in on this particular day because one of the much better places I now use was closing early and I needed to sit down with a coffee and urgently use some wifi. After I'd bought my coffee, sat down, set up my laptop etc, it turned out wifi wasn't working and when I asked if they knew anything about it I was simply told dismissively/contemptuously that they didn't know - hence my initial complaint, which turned into an argument, not about the wifi, but more about their attitude!! Incidentally, I revisited the cafe against my better judgement, and unlike in the past when I was new to the area, and felt more like a tourist, this time had the 'cheek' to complain (says a lot btw about how tourists are treated here!!). Anyway, the argument, during which I didn't swear etc, just simply made my case quite logically, articulately etc, led to me being banned - I suspect the waitress in charge did so because she was frustrated because she was losing the argument??? Anyway, I had/have no intention of ever going into this place again, so have effectively banned myself from enduring unfriendly staff, poor service and awful coffee. Lol!! On a final note, at the time, this experience left such a sour taste - not for not being able to go in there again (it's truly awful) but because I (in my late 50s) was shamed and humiliated by the (twenty something) staff - that I tried by e-mail (no response) and phone (no-one answered the customer service line) to register my dissatisfaction. I get the feeling this company doesn't really care about its customers or its staff, hence their terrible attitude - and hence some of the other awful reviews on here. On that note, I would also add that I suspect the staff's attitude stems from being undermanned and overworked, though, while that may excuse slowness and incompetence, it doesn't let them off the hook for rudeness imo!

The last visit was not a good experience, but this time they were excellent. They took my order, delivered it quickly and tidied a table for us as soon as I asked (my fault, I picked a used one in the window, all others were clean). I looked behind where they were serving and the floor in the customers area and it was all spotlessly clean, staff were efficient and polite. Well done!

I love Coffee No1 and would always choose this coffee shop over any others. I've been to this store before and then there were no issues, but on this occasion it was very different. It was busy and all the tables that were not occupied were covered with used cups etc. We located one near the window and politely asked the waitress if she could clear it for us, which she agreed to do. I went and ordered the drinks and returned to the table and the table had not been cleared. The waitress was clearing tables that no one was sat at and totally ignored ours. I find this appalling customer service and this is why I have left this review. the waitress walked past us several times, so could have apologised if she had forgot or had been busy, but I wasn't going to ask her again.....Coffee No1 need to ensure their staff understand what good customer service is!

Really terrrible, went in for a cup of afternoon tea. Although it didn’t seem that busy, I was standing in the queue for more than 20 minutes waiting to be served, the queue was hardly moving at all, gave up and went somewhere else!
