Had gluten free fish and chips tonight for the first time, delicious, very crispy batter, fish beautiful and scrummy chips. Will definitely have this again. Haven’t had fish and chips for so long. Thank you.

Fabulous fish chips and mushy peas , on a Monday night ! Really delicious and the sales assistants were totally charming and even laughed at one of my dreadful jokes !! Will be going again. X

I hate to leave a poor review of a local business however too many times the customer service has been to awful with exceptionally long waits, and items missing from order. Tonight I waited 25mins for a small order with an almost empty shop. People received freshly cooked orders before us. Eventually after 25mins I had to leave and was told it was because the sausage I ordered had to be 'freshly cooked'. I was not informed of this wait time and assumed it would not take half an hour to cook a sausage. Especially since the store was quiet and owner was standing around chatting the entire time. Eventually got a refund on the sausage and left, only to have cold, stale, inedible chips missing the gravy I ordered. I will be travelling across town from now on.

Literally best chippy in Frome. Food is cooked perfectly and the service is amazing!!!! Couldn’t recommend any more

I gave 3 stars. The reason for the 2 missing stars is as follows. Reason 1. Only cash! This is 2022. What a complete pain it is to use cash in this day and age. I don’t want to have loose coins in my pocket after using cash. A lot of low income families prefer to manage there money via online banking on there phones and loose cash is harder to manage. Reason 2. Not consistent. The fish is regularly doughy and thick. The golden rule with fish is to get it light and crispy! Sometimes it’s good and enjoyable but it’s like a lottery. The chips can be dehydrated on some days. The fish and chips on some days are very good. But like I said it’s a lottery. With the new ‘Launch’ I had hopes that they would up there quality but sadly no. Frome seems to lack a good fish and chip shop. I think the owner needs to visit the north where PROPER fish and chips are made. GET YOUR BATTER SORTED and sort card payments and I will give you full stars.

I ordered food went out for 5 mins came back some off the order had been cooked left on top of heater .well waiting for one lots of chip I seen the staff no gloves just chucking things in fryer not once did he wash his hands and kept wiping his hands on dirty apron .when got food it was awful couldn't eat it.wont be going there again

We have been using this chip shop for years and have been very happy with the food and the service. But the last couple of visits have been very disappointing. The food has been under cooked and below normal standards and the staff are rude and extremely unhelpful. Most of the time the shop is staffed by younger people and they seem more bothered with gossiping and messing about than serving the customers! Such a shame as it used to be one of the best chip shops in town.

Staff who clearly have not adapted well to the current environment serving up lashings of rudeness and a very average supper. Time to return to the welcoming and reliable arms of the White Row Farm Shop fish restaurant

I really don't recognise the place described in the most recent two adverse posts, but I note that they date from 3 years ago. Codswallop is now under new management and is a really good fish & chip shop. I've just had their standard fish 'n chips and it was fresh, plentiful, beautifully cooked, and excellent value. Not only that, the shop is reassuringly Covid-secure and busy-busy-busy with a good-sized team, scurrying around in smart uniforms, lead by new owner/manager Becky. I rang to order in advance and our meal was ready to collect bang on time. I recommend them very highly.

I have been going to this chippy for years and the staff are very friendly, their southern fried chicken is lovely, I turned up just before closing one evening and wanted two peices of chicken and got 4 peices, brilliant. Good value for money

We stopped here for a quick tea before a family do, portions were large, best chips we've had in a long time. Really good service. Shame we don't live locally otherwise we would make this our regular!

We had some lovely fresh cooked fish and other firm favourites including pie and burgers. The chips tasted great and were not too greasy. Our Frome favourite for chips as it's always reliable. Friendly service too.

Because of the mediocre reviews I wasn’t very optimistic when I went to check out this chippy last Friday having recently moved to the area. Imagine my delight when I came away with a delicious portion of tasty, crisp cod and chips.

I haven’t been to Codswallop for a few years but I found myself on that side of town when I decided to buy fish and chips. I regret not making the effort to go to one of the other fish and chip shops in Frome and will never return to Codswallop. I ordered cod and chips. It’s unusual now to find such a shop in Frome that doesn’t cook fish to order. Both the fish and chips had obviously been sitting around for some time. The batter was soggy and stuck to to the wrapping paper and the chips were limp, lukewarm and greasy. A really horrible meal.

We’ve been getting food from Codswallop for years and they’ve always been very good but the last few months the quality of the food and the service has really gone downhill. The service lately has been very poor, very slow & on more than one occasion they’ve actually got our order wrong. The food is also poor, the chips seem to be either undercooked or leftovers from lunchtime!! The last couple of times we’ve bought food from here we’ve actually chucked more away than we’ve been able to eat. Very disappointed as it used to be one of the best chip shops in town. Won’t be going there again!

It is my local so use it whenever we have fish and chips. Is always consistently good, big portions and very reasonable prices. The staff are friendly and when it’s busy work really hard to serve as quick as possible. Great 👍

I went here for a quick tea on a Friday night and ended up waiting over 40 minutes for 1 fish 2 sausages and chips. I understand they were a fryer down but what I didn’t understand was how people behind me got their food before me. I did mention to the staff I had been waiting a while and they were apologetic, but really?? The food was ok even though the sausages and fish had been sat waiting on the shelf for over 30 minutes while I waited for chips. I think this chip shop has gone downhill lately which is such a shame. They certainly need to be better organized.

Having stop using due to heavy uncooked batter decided to give Codswallop another try. Superb light crispy batter cover the fish ,tasty chips .cooked to perfection . Staff so pleasant and friendly . Busy premises indicate good quality food and service .

I stopped to buy cod and chips one evening recently and unfortunately the fish was not up to previous standard experienced. The fish was not cooked to order and had obviously been cooked sometime earlier as the batter was hard. The fish was ok but we were put off by the batter. If I call here again I will insist it is cooked to order. Shame hopefully the owners will take heed.

I went in dinner time around 40 mins after opening. Reheated tuff chips! I will never go back to a shop that sells me reheated chips.

This is a modern fish and chip shop selling traditional fish and chips. The menu is varied to suit all tastes. Veggie options and healthier options too.

Used to love the food here but lately it seems to have gone downhill. The last two times we have been in, they have ran out of chips. Waited until all the food is wrapped and getting cold before they realised there was no chips left. This time the poor young lad was out the front doing all the work while at least three people were out the back chatting. Not good. Go to the farm shop instead.

The server put loads of salt and vinegar all over the fish but none on the chips? Totally ruined the fish and made the batter all soggy, also got a jumbo battered sausage, the sausage was nice once I'd peeled off the over cooked batter off of it. Not impressed I won't be returning

This is so the best place in Frome to get your fish and chips ... Huge portions of fantastic chips with lovely fresh cod!! Yummy definitely reccomend

Patatas fritas buen pescado estaba duro fueron quemados en el bin. fuimos He estado un par de veces y las patatas fritas son algunos de los peores que he probado, seco y duro. Uno debe recoger a través de la rara normal, porque las raciones son grandes, es el típico para conseguir un plato lleno de bastante buenos. En una nota un poco mejor, siempre parecen tener un régimen amplio de limpieza, es poco probable que tenga un problema con la higiene.

The very best chip shop locally in Frome, have used on countless occasions, good service and large portions.

Bought a portion of chips at 5.35pm today and they tasted like warmed up lunchtime chips with them all being 'tough' and dry! Considering they opened at 5pm there can be no excuse for such poor chips.

Muy sucia con restos de comida en el suelo detrás de la barra en mi visita. Cuando yo estaba buscando en el menú de una mujer con un poco de vino en bloody de pollo diciendo que habían servido a ella. Esto podría haber matado a unos. Los suelos estaban sucios y sangrientos comida sin cocer creo que evita este lugar y ve a otro lado.

Nuestras 34 Cachorros realizó un estudio ciego degustación de 8 tiendas chip en Frome donde 2 raciones estándar eran comprados de cada uno. Los resultados eran según el sabor, la apariencia y la relación calidad-precio. Después de una tensa contar, estamos contentos de anunciar que venía arriba! Codswallop !

The menu is varied and includes steamed fish for the health conscious amongst us. Clean and always seems to have fresh cooked items rather that bits of fish that have hung around for a while.

Have only been in once and when i did i was quite shocked on how dirty it was behind the counter old chips on the floor and some had even been stepped on and not cleaned up. Also saw other bits of rubbish the counter you order at was filthy too. I decided to leave and go somewhere else for my tea. A few days later I was walking past and noticed the man who was chooking was stood there biting his nails when he had finished he and this made me feel quite ill began to pick his nose. Very disgusting indeed obviously didn't think being dark he couldn't see outside but people out side could see in very clearly. Hygiene should be very important to any food vendor but clearly this place doesn't care about such things.

Fish and chip shops are opening like a rash in the Frome area, but in some cases the established ones are still the best. Codswallop dishes up large, tasty, sizzling hot pieces of fish with a mountain of chips at a reasonable price. Tried the rest but this is still the best.

Boyfriend and I visit or order often from here, we love their cheesy chips! Never had a bad experience however I can't say the staff are the friendliest but they get the job done.

Have been collecting fish and chips from here on and off for 10 years now and never been disappointed. Staff always friendly and helpful. Usually have the Haddock as it is freshly cooked (short wait required)

Went here for a fish & chip meal, big queue, but thought OK, as it meant that food would be fresh.Not so, the chips were fine, but the fish was awful.The batter could be snapped in half, where it had been sat in the warmer for a long time ( lunch time? ) & what fish was inside was so dry it was inedible.I have had similar experiences before with this establishment, & whilst its a bit of a pain, I will now travel across town, where you know you will get quality food.

We cam in here to order 4 pieces of Southern Fried chicken. It was 17:45 and they had been open 30 minutes. We went to order and the person said "we've sold out" HOW CAN YOU SELL OUT IN 30 MINUTES. We decided to buy 2 cod with 2 portions of chips and a steak pie. When we got home we only had one portion of chips and the pie was undercooked. It still felt frozen inside.Over all we have had an appalling experience and will never come back again. There are plenty of other places in Frome that we can go to instead.IMPROVE EVERTHING AND TRAIN YOUR STAFF, THEN WE MIGHT COME AGAIN.

This were nice place for fish and chips but seen change hands now , thing of it not nice as were but still ok and think fish need rest bit more after been cook to let oil drain off it and I still go back just same.

Use Codswallop from time to time, fish & chips have always been good quantity and quality is okay at prices you expect to pay. I have never had a problem with fish being undercooked, though I know others who have. Usually find there is a bit of a await as either the fish or the chips are still being cooked, still you know it is fresh.

Ordered Cod and chips twice take always waiting to cook shop busy but not more than usual.on eating the batter of the cod cooked on the outside and still contained white uncooked bather on the insidealso the cod undercooked. chips excellent. value good if cooked properly.

Good fish and chips takeaway. Burgers take quite a while to be done though so it's not always "fast food". Chips are sometimes dry. It's not the best chip shop in town but it fills a hole.

Situated on Stonebridge Estate next to Tesco Express . Lovely fish and chips plus other choices . Fish can be cooked to your choice . Well worth a try if you are new to the area .

We live a minutes walk away from this fish and chip shop but rather than walk we will drive across town to get a decent fish and chip takeaway.Harsh as it seems, there seems to be no standards when the fish or chips are cooked, on the odd occasion we have been there, one fish was over cooked whilst the other was perfect. They will not cook fresh fish if asked, it's just pot luck on how long the fish has been sat on the counter for! Also don't bother asking for a mushy pea fritter as if they have sold out they will not cook any fresh to order, when we asked there reply was "we won't be cooking anymore as we have sold our quota". Also no standard to portion sizes, and the two large portion of chips we last ordered were equivalent to one large portion brought elsewhere!Years ago this used to be the best fish and chip shop in Frome, I really hope they change for the better as I would love to support my local fish and chip shop.

This is the closest chip shop to us being just round the corner so having eaten from here several times a month over the last 6 years I feel I have experienced it enough times too comment. This had always been our favourite choice of chip shops in town for years but over the last 6 months has disappointed on more occasions than not and so sad to say we have now chosen not too return.The quality of food had always been excellent but as of recently can be bit of a mixed bag if the chap (I think his names John) is frying and whenever he's not in its nowhere near as nice. If Johns frying on the day it's always excellent so full credit to him, but I've always felt disapointed on the days hes not their frying behind the counter.Unfortunatly only recently the portion size of the chips has been shrinking noticeably. We have always ordered one large and one size portion and used to be left struggling to eat them all but now the same sizes are so small were left feeling hungry for more. If you want a regular portion size make sure you order a large (£2.05) as a regular size is more like a small child's portion.The biggest problem I found is the wait you sometimes face after ordering your food. The final nail in the coffin came after waiting 19 minutes for two small sausages, two burgers and two portions of chips whilst they served eight other people between myself along with two others who also has lengthy waits. Whilst I expect a small wait it wasnt that much of an out the ordinary order. Too add insult to injury when it was finally ready I had my order read back to me and not even the slight hint of "sorry for the wait" which I've had in the past. I heard of others who avoid here because of the time it can take but judging by my last experience I presume the staff now see this as normal!Shame :-(

For good old fish n chips it is very good value for money. Front of shop looks clean and tidy. Varied menu Easy parking.

Have purchased fish & chips from this establishment on many occasions & results are very mixed.Can be really good, but more often than not very disappointing.Last Wednesday I purchased Cod & Chips, & clearly the fish had been cooked a long time ago ( lunch time ? ) & kept warm.It was so dry as to be inedible.Codswallop is convenient, but much better to drive across town.

Myself and my family have had food from Codswallop dozens of times and the food has always been great. To the guy who complained that they had run out of battered cod by the time his meal was cooked may I suggest that you let the staff know what you intend ordering right from the start and I'll guarantee that from my experience all your food will come out at the same time.Would highly recommend

£9.50 for 2 cod, 1 chips, 1 mushy peas takeaway I thought reasonably expensive. Peas were virtually cold and cod was big batter small fish. A mountain of decent chips but I want more than a big helping of chips for my money. Disappointing.

I went to get a takeaway meal for 4 people. Codswallop do a very tasty baked cod with leeks in foil, a good healthy alternative to cod in batter. I knew I'd have to wait for the fish in foil to cook and that was fine, but by the time it was ready, they'd run out of battered sausages (for my lads) and by the time they were ready, they'd run out of battered cod, and by the time that was ready, they had to scrabble around for enough chips for my order ... The food was tasty enough but mine was only luke-warm because it had been 'keeping warm' for the best part of half an hour.
