Cockneys Pie & Mash in Kensington and Chelsea

We both had the pie & mash bowl with 1/2 beef gravy & 1/2 “liquor” (a greenish gravy) & we loved it. The owner was very personable and proud of the reputation she’s built over the decades. It was the best local fare we had in London and also the most affordable meal during our stay. But bring CASH. No cards are accepted.

Amazingly cheap and true authentic London’s food. You only have 1 choice , Pie and mash! Cash only. Staffs are friendly. Must go especially if you are tourists. The staffs, even the customers are truly Londoners. Eye- opening dining experience. The bathroom and everywhere are exceptionally clean! One thing I want to tell the owner—-Thanks for keeping the price affordable in such expensive city.

My wife and I were visiting London for a few days and visiting Cockneys was definitely on our to-do list. Having walked the length of Portobello Road market,we were ready to eat and what a treat we had. I had always had Pie and Mash with gravy,so my wife asked if I could try some liquer first.With the sample tasted,I asked myself why I had never had it before as it was absolutely delicious. Great, friendly, and welcoming staff served up very tasty and generous portions of pie,mash and liquor with a mug of tea. I would recommend Cockneys to anyone who is either trying for the first time or is a connisuer of this delicacy.

Me and my son met up with a old friend who was born around this area . So we decided to have a trip down potabello market and end up at cockneys for pie and mash , we all had double pie and mash washed down with a mug of tea great food good value, would definitely recommend

The pies and the mash are nice, but the problem is that the liquor is tasteless. They don't put any fish in it and there's not enough parsley, so it's just like a hot water sauce.

I haven’t tried, as I am not a pie fan, and also I thought they put too much gravy. I took my cousin as she wanted to try the tradicional pie. I am impressive with the price £4.50. I believe it is one of the cheapest places I ever seen on these days. The pie looks good but too much gravy even for her taste. Maybe I would suggest the gravy to be on the side. They just have one pie flavour, it was beef. It is a very simples place. Not sure if I would try, but the reviews were good and that’s why we went there. 1 mash 1 pie at 4.5pounds, so very reasonably priced. Tasted great with vinegar and pepper. Told the lady whom I assume is the owner that it was my 1st time eating mash & pie as it was my first time in London. She said the shop is around for 38 years. The place is a simple looking shop which you probably eat and go and around 9mins walk from Portobello Market. Only cash accepted.

It's basic pie and mash with only one choice of pie. Beef or beef 🤣. I found it to be very bland as if it was reheated Asda basics.

This eatery is located at the non-Notting Hill Gate end of Portobello Rd, the other side of Westway, and not far from the Lisboa Patisserie. There is some seating space, both inside and out. We sat outside. We ordered pies, mash and gravy. We also could order peas. This is the 'real deal' - cooked on the premises and served without pretension. After this meal we were ready to tackle the full length of the Portobello Rd markets.

For those of you who have never tried this London delicacy you are missing the real deal meal. Meat pie made with a special filling all contained in a tasty pie pastry a generous helping of mashed potatoes and covered with that special liquor which some people refer to as gravy!

Simply traditional. Not a pretend hipster pie shop, but the real thing. A proper pie (1 option), choose how many, how many mash, liquor or gravy, peas or no peas. Get some vinegar on the liquor. Boom, done! Fast, friendly and satisfying, what more could you want?

I was looking for lunch ,and after a long contract in the area had tried plenty of the bistros, grills, Thai etc on Portobello road and there it was! I got a very friendly welcome as i ordered my pie and mash. The cafe had it's regulars all having a chat, a lovely atmosphere. I had no cash and the lady said they don't take cards, so i said i will go to the cash point. She insisted i ate my food while it is hot, and go out to get the money afterwards. Trust!!!

Visited Cockneys while over in London last month with my family. It was fab! We were the first in at 11.30 on a Saturday and the place was full in 10 minutes. Steaming hot tasty pie, smooth mash and lovely liquor. Highly recommended.

Mi hermana vino a visitarme desde Kent y un simple almuerzo entre hermanas no podría haber sido mejor. La cola estaba fuera de la puerta. Encontramos un asiento para dos en la ventana. Llegaban clientes regulares en grupos y la camarera era encantadora. Organizar las comidas y los pedidos para llevar, y apoyar a los clientes mayores que estaban preocupados por la distribución de sus asientos. Vinagre con chiles y vajilla básica. Más importante aún, comida deliciosa, tradicional y muy barata.

My boyfriend and I arrived here just by chance, and it was good since it was past 2 pm with cold cold weather and our stomach was still empty. Got pie&mash;, one with liquor and one with gravy, and that was good. Gravy was better in my opinion. Nice homely tea with milk. I'll remember the kindness of staff and other customers, all glad to be inside warming up instead of being in the cold rush of arsh winds out in the street. Functional and clean facilities. I’ve been to quite a few ‘pie n mash’ cafes to boldly rate myself as half a connoisseur and I would say cockneys...well, it was a good pie n mash. No eels which was slightly disappointing BUT a friendly place with nice grub!

Having lived in the area a while...I can honestly say I walked past this place almost daily without giving it a thought. I finally stopped in and am very glad to have done so! This is one of the true gems of Portobello Road. Pies are fantastic and great for a quick meal! Definitely have been back several times and will continue to do so!

My partner has been trying to get me to come here for the last few years, being a northerner I wasn't the least bit interested in pie and mash with parsley sauce!!!! So I gave in and here I am.

I went on Saturday for the 4th time this year. It really is a good one if you have been eating pie and mash as long as I have. So many of them have closed down now. I even got a takeaway for my sister because they moved to Essex and are not near one now and we were meeting them the next day, The lady who owns it is really nice and friendly, they put the pies and mash into little containers and you get a cup full of the lovely liquor!

Parecían ser todos locales. Teníamos el pastel y puré con licores y era muy bueno. No tenían ni idea de por qué la salsa de perejil se llama licor. El propietario trae bandejas de fragantes, casa tartas caseras de la cocina para llenar el cenar en y realizar pedidos. Tuvimos la Misa del gallo pastel de carne. Las patatas son muy buenas y no fuera de una caja. Bebimos una taza de té con la comida. Se paga por adelantado, en efectivo. No romper el banco, muy barato comer.

This is almost the only surviving pie and mash shop in west London, and probably one of the best that are left in London. It's very basic inside but the meals are both good and inexpensive at £3.40 for a single pie, mash and liquor.The mash and traditional green liquor were both very good but the pies can be a bit hit and miss - some were golden brown whilst others were quite overdone - however you can point out which ones you prefer.

First impression great (but) than it went down hill no eels which is a big thing in a pie&mash shop then someone comes in and dumps a dog on the table I have no problems with dogs but not in a restaurant slobber hair on the table and we all what they lick sorry if your allergic towards pet hairs stay away and the owners didn't seem to mind

This was my third visit, my mother of 80 who has been eating Pie & Mash since being a child rates Cockneys as one of the best Pie & Mash ah'e ever had. It's now become a staple stop on the way to visiting my mother as a special treat.

If you are a pie and mash connoisseur then you must visit this place. The pie, liquor, and mash were all fantastic. Staff really friendly and the chilli vinegar was excellent. Couldn't ask for more. It was very affordable too.

Decided to ensure explore the Portabello Road market as the weather was nice. Glad I kept walking past he overcrowded Notting Hill Gate end. Saw Cockney's Pie and Mash shop with a long line waiting to get in. It was certainly worth the wait! A meal for under a fiver in one of the top tourist destinations in London. Very simple menu of pie, mash, gravy (liqour), eel and soft drinks. Spotless clean, small seating area and quick service. Will be back.

Revisit with friends over Christmas. Queued to get in, which was great to see. Being in London from overseas had pie and mash three times and different locations and found Cockneys to be the best. I arrived london with no plan. I just saw here and tried my first UK food at here. It was a lovely choice. Here is long way from fancy. But really cozy and comfortable. Menu is simple and easy. Pie and mash with mild sauce will make you happy :-) I want to go here again.

I love this place. Ruth who runs it is marvellous, always on the go never seems to stop. I was brought up on pie and mash as a child. My husband took me there and I thought no way will it be the same as I remembered as a child. OMG it was heaven, yes I know it s pie and mash, but...it was heaven to me brought back so many memories, even had the "dead fish vinegar". (Vinegar with chillies floating on top), that's what us kids called it. Even get husband to pick up and bring home when he passes.Shop is so friendly always happy chatter and laughter, would definitely recommend.Still a cheap meal.

We visited today at 4:45 only to be told all pies had gone, the son said to his mum this is the lady that rang earlier(don't know how he knew it was me) his mum asked me if we minded waiting 10 mins whilst she turned the oven back on we didn't we even offered to take the food away as they were closing at 5pm she told us it was fine and we could eat our pie and mash whilst she cleaned up. The food was as good as last time. And the owner told us a lot of history that we didn't know. LOVELY FOOD AND LOVE MUM AND SON. WE WOULD DEFINATELY GO BACK ON OUR NEXT TRIP.
