Delicious fish n chips with a fantastic choice of menu. We travel from Catterick to Cockerton specifically to get our favorite large cod n chips with mushy peas!!!! The staff are nice too.

Been good before but not today. Greasy soggy chips, nice fish, well cooked but way too much batter. Cheapish, but mostly inedible on this visit

There’s no denying the food is great and the reviews and permanent queue of people back that up. Meal deal though? Total up the components and the “deal” is you’re getting a bread bun for 10p. Not so much of a deal really.

Really tasty. Consistent. Can recommend. It shouldn't be difficult to cook fish and chips well but so many take aways fail miserably. Cockerton Fisheries is pretty much as good as it gets.

Firstly, having read some of the negative reviews on here about this establishment, I can only assume they are a reflection of the IQ level of some people who like Fish & Chips (Which I must sadly include myself😳) . One only has to assess their grasp of the English language, to really question how they would be capable of formulating a culinary opinion, never mind stringing a sentence together to express a subjective one 🤷‍♂️. Anyway, for many years we as a family have used another local Fish & Chip shop which continues to offer nice quality food (In my opinion). However, when my wife was diagnosed with Coeliacs disease a year ago, a friend recommended Cockerton Fisheries as they cater for Gluten Free. We tried it, and always go here when my wife wishes to indulge. The gluten free food is prepared, and cooked in a different fryer. As such, this is perfect for my wife, as we have found on so many occasions over the last year, most establishments say their food is Gluten Free but the way they prepare it often involves inadvertent cross contamination. The Gluten Free curry sauce is also lovely according to my wife! As far as the quality goes, we have never had a bad meal yet from here, and we visit on average once a week/fortnight. The batter always looks and tastes fresh, and the Cod nice and white. The owner is a really friendly engaging lady, and the rest of the staff are efficient and pleasant too. Do they make mistakes with orders? Probably. Does that warrant a keyboard hero to try and damage a local business? No, definitely not! My advice for anyone with more than a single digit IQ level, would be to ignore the 1 star (and repeat negative reviews) and give this local family business a try, it’s well worth the visit. All those people you see queuing out the door most nights can’t be wrong. p.s. The queues seem to go down quickly!

Staying in the area and needed a takeaway. So pleased we found this Fish & Chip shop. Good food, NOT greasy, friendly staff, would definitely return if in the area.

I am originally from Cockerton and still use this shop when ever in the area. Service is quick and it can be busy. Always top quality fish and chips and they now do a small cod and chips if you do not want a large portion.

Sausages are good too! I really like this fish and chip shop! I especially like the haddock! Big portions and reasonable prices!

After this fish and chip shop was recommended to us we decided to give them a go. Really disappointed as they were dripping in grease.

They can’t get a simple order right in this chip shop, I mean it’s not rocket science Ordered over the phone for pick up Fish n chips twice and sausage n chips twice with curry sauce n peas. Got home to 1 fish n chip, 1 sausage n chips curry sauce and no peas!!! Charged for the lot as well!!!! Not the first time the order has been taken over the phone wrong. Come on girls, at least write it down if your getting too old to remember it!

Letter in the window from a MP saying they’re the best fish and chips in town. Ordered cod & chips with scraps 3 times and a sausage. They took contactless payment, no acknowledgment…. Got home and they had charged and served me cod & chips 3 times, no scraps, and sausage & chips?? Chips were dry and tasted of oil, batter was thick and greasy, fish was ok. 3 hours later … all I can taste is grease, won’t be going there again even though it’s my local chip shop.

Staff very abrupt. They take your money before your fish and chips are ready. Scabby chips probably the reason they take your money before your order. They are not bad as a fish and chip shop but in the top 10 table they are midway. Lots of room for improvement.

This used to be a great fish n chip shop. never let you down always consistently good quality plump white fish and freshly cooked chips. The last 3 visits over the last couple of months have been very different. Fish wet, slimy and tasteless, loads of batter without encasing any fish and chips greasy and chewy. Has this takeaway been taken over or is there a supply issue for decent fish? Whatever, nearly £14 for two poor quality fish and one chips means this chippie is no longer on our good food list!!

A great village chippy with friendly staff and good food.Even putting a heater outside in the winter months so the queuing customers can keep warm.

When we first moved to DL3 this shop was great, very fresh and tasty fish. The last three visits I’ve ordered large cod expecting to get it freshly cooked. All three have been the same, not fresh, hard dry batter and fish so dry that it had no flavour. Considering the price charged this is not acceptable. We’ll be looking for somewhere else to go.

My wife called in for our tea after work and this is what they SOLD me as a batterd burger we have had good meals from here in the past but recently going down hill will have to find another chippy

Just seen a bad review for Cockerton fisheries I’ve been using that chip shop for years and from my experience has always been excellent food and staff

My hubby and I travel from Catterick to get our fish n chips from Cockerton. They are always freshly cooked and delicious, and the staff are helpful and friendly. Personally I wouldn't go anywhere else for my fix of fish n chips. 100% can recommend....

Ordered fish and chips to come at 18:00 and i nipped out to get the money at 17:30 which is only 5 mins away and the owner turns up 25 mins early with no notice and starts banging on the door like a crazed animal....

Called in at lunch time and had fish n chips Cod was luke warm and came with soggy batter Chips were cold and shrivelled up

Long queue for take outs . We walked through to the back and found a table it's a small place with only a few tables. Ordered our normal of fish bites ,chips ,bread and pot of Tea. Very tasty and a very substantial portion .

Me and my daughter popped in for fish and chips last Thursday and they were delicious. My daughter being only 8 couldn’t finish her fish it was that big so I had to finish it for her haha! It’s not something I go buy unless at the seaside so was a lovely change to go home and eat them. Will be back

After having used this for a few meals in the past, I have never really rated it, decided to give it yet another chance today, never again. The ladies in the shop are very rude rush everything through that fast you can’t even say you want salt & vinegar! Everything gets thrown in a bag at lightening speed then the bag gets thrown at you, I ordered a chip butty, the roll was tiny and there was barely enough chips to cover it, yes the chips were nice however I’m now sat still rather hungry, I doubt a small child would have been sufficiently fed after what I’ve just had!

Arrived early, fish, chips and peas £6.10 - a tad expensive I thought for take out. Got home moved chips and fish to plate when I felt a slight burn on my leg. Grease! Washed jeans, but wouldn’t come out. I’ve read other reviews, I also think that the prices have increased and the quality gone down. Fish batter, brown in places. Fish a bit dry. One expensive fish and chips by the time I replace my jeans!

Tried Cockerton Fisheries on recommendation and have to say the food and service was superb, must be the best fish & chips in Darlington, not just takeaway either there are seats available too, highly recommended and will be a regular from now on.

We have to say this was our first time to have fish and chips from here. We had to wait over an hour and a half as it was Good Friday 2018.

Food is nice but on occasion I've felt disappointed by the portion size. On occasion I have purchased a chip butty (Normally it's something like fish and chips but sometimes I just want something small) and there were barely enough chips to cover the bun. It always seems to be the same member of staff that does this too so maybe she doesn't like my face Anyway, food is nice but maybe keep an eye on portion sizes....a happy customer will return, a disgruntled one will go elsewhere

There are a few tables in the back so you don't have to take away. We all had fish and half chips which was just sufficient although you still get a full size cod. Served with a pot of tea and bread. You only need a serving of mushy peas to complete a wonderful meal. Very friendly and helpful staff.

Not been in here for nigh on a year, and it is still superb. Fish is perfectly cooked in perfect batter, very good size, peas are excellent as are lightly browned chips. I might stop my usual detour to the Wetherby Whaler as this is as good as I travel up from Rutland for Darlo home games.

Lovely fish and chips. Went with my daughter for tea as a mid week treat and ate in thw cafe - best in town - fish was enormous and perfectly cooked - 5 stars!!!

En esta tienda de pescado, después de haber estado de compras. Pasó por muchas un tiempo así que decidimos hoy era el día para llamar. Mi hijo menor dieron patatas fritas y salsa de curry curry (muy sabrosa) conseguí pequeña salchicha y patatas fritas y mi dieron chips de queso. Las patatas fritas eran encantadores, pero mi hija estaba muy decepcionado la señora poner un puñado de queso rallado en la parte superior. Ellos nunca se evapora o incluso ofreció también, ella sólo empezaron a servir el próximo cliente. Sin embargo ella hizo comer pero comentó que hubiera sido mejor que tenía se habían derretido.

La comida es buenísima, pero no creo que voy a volver. El personal es muy desagradable, especialmente la señora que estaba en el hasta esta noche! Tan ignorante y más molesta sobre sus propias conversaciones. Yo no pido una guisantes pero me cobraron de todos modos. Yo no quería hacerla consciente de este error debido a la cola que se fuera de la puerta, pero ese no es el problema. El problema es la manera en que el personal actúe por sus clientes y como pagar el cliente encontrar esta muy decepcionante.

Peces tardaban años en cocinar pescado estándar (sólo quería patatas fritas). Grosero y brusco mujer detrás del mostrador. Ella originalmente no darnos nuestra salsa curry guisantes blandos y recordarle, tenía que hacer a ellos, cuando llegamos a casa, descubrimos que teníamos la salsa curry salsa no.

Last week my husband bought a Friday night supper, only when he got home a fish was missing. I rang the shop and explained the error to them, their options were a) come back now b) next time you're in collect a fish with the rest of your order. Okay, thanks very much, I'll ask for another fish next time. So I went to the shop, ordered meals for the children, explained about the fish as advised from my telephone call, blooming heck, it was awful, I was treated like a liar, I got told that no staff on this shift knew anything about it, I was then told my husband wasn't charged for the fish a week earlier. So are your chips over £6 a bag? In the end I was given a fish but I left feeling humiliated. First time I've ever needed to raise a matter in this shop, last time as well. They behaved disgracefully.

Visit on a regular basis many fish shops vary from visit to visit, Cockerton are consistently of a high quality, friendly and efficient staff soon have any que reduced. Specials made quickly and everything done in manageable batches to ensure consistent good quality Fish & Chips. I wouldn't go anywhere else in Darlington.

Bought fish and chips out of this shop and the fish batter was black and hard and the fish was gooey. The chips were over cooked dry and rock hard. The staff was rude I will not be going back to this shop again.

Have been a regular here for my Friday night Cod & Chips longer than I can remember. Fantastic food, decent portions with the fish cooked just how you like it, nothing is too much trouble for Sam and the friendly team behind the counter. Eat in the café, or take away wrapped up in paper the traditional way. Very popular with people in the know, especially on a Friday evening ... hence the queue! Worth the wait as you will be getting top value, top quality plus some light hearted banter whilst getting served.

If you don't know about ordering anything specific as you walk in, things can be slowed down which is expected as are times when busy, as this place usually is, so pick your time :-)

This chippy was recommended by family. We were in Darlington for a visit from Fife. The vast majority of chippies that we have tried in Fife are pretty poor with a couple of notable exceptions, also I have never found one that serves cod. So the meal from Cockerton Fisheries was very welcome. The portions are good and the quality of the fish was excellent. i guess that at busy times you would have quite a wait, happily this did not apply in our case. Definitely worth a visit.

Visited this fish and chip shop a couple of days ago and it is still the best fish and chips we have ever had. We travel 16 miles from Northallerton just to have fish and chips in this little cafe. They're unbeatable. Pleasant staff, quick service and superb food. Good portions cooked to perfection. Lovely thick, moist flakes of white fish (cod). Nice chips - not soggy like some. Tea, bread and butter is included in a very fair price. Will definitely continue to visit as long as we're able.

We are in the restaurant on good Friday (probably their busiest day of the year!!) I don't live in the area but my Nan and Grandad have been going in every Friday for years, until they've gone into a home. I used to love going there and I wanted to show my boyfriend how great this place was. We were served quickly, politely and the food was great quality. Well done and thanks :-)

Our first visit here on a Saturday lunchtime, where we sat and ate our food in the little cafe to the side.The fish and chips were top drawer, up there with the best we've tasted. The fish was nice and thick with a crispy batter and the chips were cooked to perfection. Served with mushy peas, bread & butter and a cup of tea took the meal to the next level!All the staff were really friendly with great service from the waitress.While we were eating there was a constant queue of customers at the takeaway counter, which can only be a good sign.So give it a visit, you won't be disappointed!!

We used to eat fish n chips at least once a month from this chippy, but on our last visit the lady behind the counter was rude & abrupt & they were very greasy so haven't been for ages We decided to give it another try tonight - some staff have changed & a new lady cooking the fish not seen her before - not a lot ready, therefore customers were letting her know what they wanted - but she was snappy with them - no need for itTasty fish but the cod bites weren't, some had obviously been cooked at lunch time & re heated tonight - chip portions were tiny - very disappointedThis chippy does have a small eating area at the back & seemed busy

Absolutely superb best chips I've had from a chippi in years and the haddock was the standard of a great West Yorkshire chippi, mushy peas too. How this chippi is barely rated better than the dreadful Frydays I will never know. Only 1 CHIPPI in Darlo for me now!

Very obnoxious staff, salt n vinegar must be an extra, and not the cleanest place I have been. Staff were even eating off the hot plate as they served. Disgusting.

This fish shop would have a 'four' but have only given it a 'three'. The fish and chips are tasty but what spoils this place is the unfriendly staff. They are arrogant, rude and miserable. Even stand behind counter eating chips directly from the hot plate. Wouldn't hurt to crack a smile ladies and have a bit of banter with your customers !!

Well worth a visit regardless of take away or eat in but eating in was outstanding and the staff, despite a couple of feedbacks on here, were 10 out of 10!!! Food was as good as it gets for fish and chips and the value was very good. Nothing was a bother and the place was clean with prompt friendly service. We will return when in the area thank you

New to area and this honestly is the best fish and chips ever. Totally agree with some of the negative reviews of the staff.. I get the impression the queues outside the door on a Friday give them the impression they don't need to give amazing cusotmer service. So What! For fish and chips that good i'ld let Nigel Farrage serve them. Portions are very small, but I would rather that than three times the ammount of chips and them stuck together with grease and horrible... Fish bits are amazing and the chips are to die for... don't know what they use to cook them but have never tasted anything like them. If your a big eater order two portions.

Beautiful white fish in a crisp clean batter and freshly cooked chips. Such a lot to choose from including non-fish choices. Not forgetting the extras e.g. Mushy peas, curry sauce, etc. the service is always prompt and friendly.

don't waste your time and money here !the staff are arrogant and rude they told me to go somewhere else after I complained that they sold me a small portion of chips when I asked for a large portion !with out explaining that they don't sell large portions !tell me where that makes sense !battered sausage nearly broke my teeth it was like chewing into a rockchips were really thick with grease don't bother going here !they don't deserve to run a business !

Good quality fish and chips at a reasonable cost. We use them regularly and the kids love it. I will be returning again very shortly.

I visited after the recent refurbishment after the fire. The place looks a lot cleaner & fresher, however, it would be a much more pleasant experience if the staff could raise a smile & speak to the customers as if they actually wanted their business, I found them ignorant & unfriendly. The food hasnt changed since before the fire, its still very greasy. I only popped in for convenience & wont make that mistake again.
