Although the food was good the experience was poor. Not the standard i expect for the cost. Staff seemed unconsciously incompetent. Correct cutlery and table condiments not satisfactory. I expect the staff to know the basics. And waited tirelessly for the bill.......

We had afternoon tea with a glass of sparkling for 3 as a birthday treat. Cannot fault the food and service. One of our party is vegetarian & was catered for with no problems. The location is beautiful overlooking the river. A lovely special treat.

Don't like to leave a bad review as the food was really good but the service was terrible. We waited so long to get a drink when we were first served we had to get up and ask for one. The oysters showed up with no small forks or a spoon for the vinegar. They forgot one round of our drinks we waited 20 mins for. For a £200 pound punch with high quality food there needs to be better service.

Went there in July and the menu was the same as today January 20th. The menu was uninspiring for the food and price,the food was very well cooked. Bottle of wine we chose was a good price and enjoyable.

I really don't like giving a negative review, but we were hugely underwhelmed; e.g. very long wait for drinks and food, the oysters had gone off so they said, so had to order something else but never came with the promised sides, my main main course tasted nice enough but was small and inconsequential, my partners however was lovely. Such a lovely placed venue but could do so much better, sorry.

Went for Afternoon tea. Food was OK, nothing special. Wasn't the menu on the website. Apon booking requested 1 person to have meat only sandwiches and they got plain ham, rather disappointed. Service was also slow.

Very disappointing Meal at Captains Club Restaurant after an even worse afternoon Cram Tea previously ! The service was good . the food looked good but rack of lamb was tough and tasteless the hassle back potatoes were cold and completely dry . The meal was also not hot .The moules were stringy and chewy and not pleasant at all & sauce was tasteless . The Burata salad was nice but uninteresting and overpriced The only thing we enjoyed were the Olives and bread ! We did not complain at the time as there seemed little point ,as we’d already complained about the terrible afternoon tea with stale scones and awful tasteless sandwiches sometime before .. we are not complainers unless it is genuinely not good . This was not good at allIm sorry to say . The Menu was not varied enough and very overpriced . Also the venue totally lacked any atomosphere , It was also one of the groups birthday which added to the disappointment . one of us have subsequently have cancelled a further booking as a result of this very very disappointing meal Not at all impressed and this should not happen . Very poor

Lovely place on the edge of the river Stour with lots of activity on the water, large outdoor seating area, plus a large dining area indoors.

Steak dinners were cooked slightly more than needed to be, possibly cooked over too much heat.

Absolutely amazing meal for my 16th birthday, staff were always happy to help, brilliant atmosphere, have to recommend the prawn cocktail and salmon tagliatelle, they are must-haves! Also a big thank you to the kitchen staff for bringing out strawberries and chocolates on a plate with Happy Birthday written in melted chocolate and thanks to the sommelier for showing us around the wine cellar!

The tagliatelle vongole was truly awful,I was not asked at any point how my food was and didn't want to make a seen as I was with a group of friends.The tagliatelle was overcooked and the sauce was watery and tasteless. I have visited the captains club many times and this time very disappointed .

Just love it here, so relaxing, fab food, friendly efficient waiters. What more could you want.

Enjoyed a lovely stay. The staff were lovely, really welcoming and all very helpful. It was lovely to have such an extensive breakfast menu that was cooked to order rather than buffet style and great to be able to eat in the lounge with our dog. Our room was dog friendly, so was in fact an apartment, that was huge and very comfortable. Great location for making the most of the beautiful surroundings. Will be back!

Lovely restaurant on the river. Food was lovely, service a bit slow.. We also found it quite expensive and I don't think the price was warranted just because of the location. However its great for a 'special' occasion.

Awful attitude from the guy on reception.....it would seem that basic hotel common courtesy when dealing with guests requirements are beneath him.....arrogant and rude!!!

Only popped in for an afternoon drink and a snack. We were too late for afternoon tea and the only alternative was a limited selection of tapas. Relatively expensive and not that enjoyable. Service was slow as well, especially considering it was virtually empty. Wouldn't rush back!

Disappointed. Great location, nice interior and pleasant staff. BUT, given the many AA rosettes that this place has the restaurant was very disappointing. The food was very slow to come out and they used a party of ten as the excuse for this despite the fact that the place was less than half full. The food was very tasty but presented on an old fashioned nouvelle quisine style.

The SPA was excellent. Afternoon tea took an hour to be served and made us late for our treatments. It was good tea but the gluten free scones were hard and dry they had been defrosted in the microwave and then served. I must say I have had better teas but all round service from staff was excellent.

Great outlook for a meal with family / friends. Efficient service. Paying for carpark seems mean and ladies toilets needed servicing .... though staff did respond when fault reported.

What a fantastic place to eat... either inside in the modern restaurant, in the club bar or outside. All with lovely views over the River Stour. The service is second to none. Expect quite high prices but we'll worth it!

The food was beautifully cooked and the table staff helpful, but the service was dreadfully slow. That spoilt what would have been a great experience. Plus the Sunday roast beef wasn't on our menu.

Just returned home from a most wonderful night out. Thank you personally to the manager of the Captain's club restaurant. 14 of us went for a birthday celebration. Well it couldn't of been better the service was absolutely outstanding our waitress Molly was fantastic a real ambassador for the hotel, made our evening feel real special so a big thank you Molly. Now as for the food totally outstanding great job you chefs bang on perfectly cooked and presented big time. I will post all pictures of the wonderful food we had all of us enjoyed and will return 😋. Thank you captains club.

The best food I've eaten in a long time

Food was very good. I had the veal. Mainly a fish menu though. Service again very good. But the prices were very high as I suppose you are also paying for the location so because of that we will not be returning.

Went to a birthday party here, food and service very good

I was advised this was a really great place for a meal. As it was a work / customer event it seemed like an easy option, especially as work have extensively used this place for food and accommodation. Great starters but mains for a table of 6 were very poor. Monkfish had to be returned cold, lamb was warm and cooked through but not served pink as ordered, hasselback potatoes were 2 x very small crunchy overcooked rocks. 3 seafood linguine raised complaints of lack of seafood, random overcooked languistine that was dressing as wasn't edible, 2 x mussels and a overcooked fillet of salmon. Service was excellent, couldn't be more understanding and handled the issues perfectly, provided complementary deserts which were good and appreciated. Can't praise the front of house team enough. Venue is very nice and I wouldn't normally write a long review of poor experience but given the reputation and expectation I was really disappointed. I was planning to take the Wife for a meal based on the venue and starter, but now I'm looking elsewhere. Everyone at work is saying it's very unusual, that food is great and this must be a one off, maybe so but unless work chose this venue again I won't be returning.

I've been here before and it was good, so took my wife and brother while we were visiting the area. Sadly, it was not great this time, especially so considering the prices. Simple things let them down with the food. I had a lettuce core in my ceaser salad, the cauliflower cheese was dry and tasteless and the roast dinners served outside on cold plates. We would expect better at a pub restaurant so were dissapointed by this. We heard two other tables complaining, one had to ask twice for cutlery while their meal went cold and the other had to request a menu. It had the feeling of maybe inexperienced or new staff, but this should not be the case when paying above average prices. I would expect better, although I should add our waiter was very friendly. Would I go back? Well I will see what the reply is like as I visit the area every other month, but if not there are plenty of other places to try when it comes to food.

Delicious linguini almost cooked to perfection (fussy Italian I love al dente) very professional staff.. THE PIECE DE RESISTANCE.... Sticky toffee pudding the best I've ever had. Thankyou for a wonderful experience.

Wonderful, wonderful cream tea. We each had an individual tea to ourselves with a wonderful selection, a place to visit over and over again.

Really disappointing. Attention to details lacking however follow up customer care appears to be genuine. I am hopeful this experience won't be repeated for anybody else. (I have edited this post from my original as it feels the right thing to do)

Myself and wife always end up here after date night, just for a nightcap. Relaxing nice place. The only thing I will say is the decor in the lounge is looking very tired now.

Probably caught them on a bad day, service slow and food, Sunday roast, should have been much hotter. Beef was good. Great setting. Sadly many other better options locally.

I took my husband for the Afternoon Tea and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. I have been there before and the service remains excellent. There is a good selection served and plenty to fill even a large appetite. We ended up with taking some home.

Had a dinner in Club Restaurant. Food was OK, do not take potato cakes (They call them fishcake). Left £250 for 4 of us and then PARKING PENALTY for another £100. Appeal was rejected and Club did nothing to help. IF YOU HAVE NO PARKING FOR THE CUSTOMERS WHY DO YOU TAKE OUSIDE BOOKINGS?

Went to really good wedding reception here, where the guests and accompanying kids could sit outside by the river as well as inside, as the two areas have large open doors between them which made for a really relaxed atmosphere. Good food too.

A great place to go for just a drink, afternoon cream tea or dinner. We often pop in for coffee and sit by the river. Very peaceful and great view. It's not the cheapest place but worth the extra for a treat.

Good Riverside venue with outdoor seating to enjoy the Vista. Albeit autumnal today enjoyed a very nice light meal. Don't forget to pay for parking here now..

We visited the restaurant for lunch on 29/09/20 as it was our Wedding Anniversary. Lovely setting by the river Stour and restaurant felt spacious and light. It was our first venture to go out for a meal inside since March, so was exciting! They are operating a one-way system around restaurant and larger tables were separated by screens. From start to finish it was a happy experience. The very friendly staff were helpful and efficient, our food was delicious and we will definitely be returning.

Club Lounge at Captain's Club Hotel on the River Stour at Christchurch in Dorset. I went here in May 2018. What a beautiful setting when the sun is out. Sat eating, Drinking, talking alongside the beautiful River Stour What could be better the setting is fantastic. Christchurch Quay, from the quay you can find a ferry that will take you over to Hengistbury Head, also a little further along the Quay there is a ferry boat ( named the Wick Ferry ) that will take you across the river to the pretty village of Wick or even onto the Tuckton tea rooms. This ferry started around 1880 by Eli Miller, and only cost then, a halfpenny to cross the river. Christchurch was founded in the 7th century at the confluence of the rivers Avon and Stour which flow into Christchurch Harbour. The town was originally named Twynham but became known as Christchurch following the construction of the priory in 1094. The town developed into an important trading port and was fortified in the 9th century. Further defences were added in the 12th century with the construction of a castle which was destroyed by the Parliamentarian Army during the English Civil War. During the 18th and 19th centuries smuggling flourished in Christchurch and became one of the town's most lucrative industries. The town was heavily fortified during Second World War as a precaution against an expected invasion and in 1940 a Airspeed factory was established on the town's airfield which manufactured aircraft for the Royal Air Force. Christchurch is a borough and town in the county of Dorset on the south coast of England. The town adjoins Bournemouth in the west and the New Forest lies to the east. Historically within Hampshire, it joined Dorset with the reorganisation of local government in 1974 and is the most easterly borough in the county. It covers an area of 19.5 square miles and has a population of about 45,000, making it the fourth most populous town in the county. The story of Christchurch Priory goes back to at least the middle of the 11th century, as Domesday says there was a priory of 24 secular canons here in the reign of Edward the Confessor. The Priory is on the site of an earlier church dating from 800 AD. In 1094 a chief minister of William II, Ranulf Flambard, then Dean of Twynham, began the building of a church. Local legend has it that Flambard originally intended the church to be built on top of nearby St. Catherines Hill but, during the night, all the building materials were mysteriously transported to the site of the present priory. Although in 1099 Flambard was appointed Bishop of Durham, work continued under his successors, and by about 1150 there was a basic Norman church consisting of a nave, a central tower and a quire extending eastwards from the crossing. It was during this period that another legend originated, that of the miraculous beam, which was to change the name of the town from Twynham to the present day Christchurch.

Terrible place. We booked well in advance and asked for nice a table. We arrived, no tables set, they wanted to join a table together in the middle of a high traffic route inside on a hot summers day. Lots of table available. The waitress went off to ask a manager who didn’t bother showing his face and we we told they could not move the table as they were fully booked.... I have a feeling it’s because I had two kids... not really a nice place; unfortunately trading on its past reputation... If you have kids... don’t bother..
