We spent an evening with friends while on a weekend break on Shaldon. The food was great and we had a lovely time. There was torrential rain and we couldn’t get a taxi back to our caravan park. There were 6 of us and the owner kindly drove us (in 2 trips) back to our site. Definitely beyond what we would have expected of any normal restauranteur. Lovely place, great food and lovely atmosphere. Highly recommend it.

We visited here a couple of times. Once for dinner, which was very good and also dropped in for a drink one afternoon when they had a live jazz group performing. The beer garden is also great for a sunny pint. The staff are very friendly and clearly work hard.Interestingly, on Sunday morning I went to the shop for a newspaper and was redirected to The Clifford, where papers were indeed on sale and there was a good community buzz about the place (locals before or after church perhaps).

Chef turns out said great food and I am sure his sausage rolls are lush but can be flaky. Popped in for a drink in the beer garden during the bank holiday weekend. Lovely selection of drinks available & lots from local breweries/ distilleries. The beer garden is very pleasant, wasn't brimming with people as the Clifford isn't too close to the front but that was perfect for us. Really lovely interior and overall had a lovely vibe. We didn't stop to eat but I'd be more than happy to in the future!

Whilst on holiday in Teignmouth we took the ferry over and had a long hilly walk in Shaldon. When making our way back to the ferry we stumbled across this place and enjoyed a lovely drink in the sunny beer garden. Service was good, hence 2 stars rather than 1. Unfortunately the menu, which drew us to choosing the Clifford, was not reflected in the presentation or quality of food and although plentiful neither of us enjoyed our meal, it actually felt quite amateurish. Sorry.

Visited for Dinner. Unfortunately a few smelly(wet) dogs were there. Says it's dog friendly but I would have thought in a separate area to the "restaurant".Starter of calamari was delicious, not at all chewy with a well seasoned dusting. There was no salmon for the salmon nicoise, but the dish was offered as was but with cod. Sorry but it wasn't right. If your delivery doesn't arrive substitute the whole dish with something more appropriate to cod, which by the way was nicely cooked.Overall a disappointing visit I'm afraid.

My friend took me here for a celebratory lunch for my uni results. The menu had a great variety of seasonal produce with a locally sourced emphasis. I had mackerel with rhubarb and horseradish cream to start which was absolutely to die for and such a beautiful blend of flavours by clearly a very talented and creative chef. The title of this review is a warning. Initially we were given a warm welcome and the coffees etc. we had were fine and service was good. The 4 of us were contemplating lunch when what I believe to be the small 'pub dog' trotted behind a near by table and crapped. How disgusting in a place serving food and drink to have an untrained animal running around. I informed the 'landlord?' who cleaned it up by removing offending article, gave a quick spray of something, and mildly chastised the dog. No apology to us or the other customers sitting nearby. Goodness knows when the staff would have noticed for themselves, most likely not until another customer trod in it. Obviously we couldn't get out of there quickly enough. What a shame and how disappointing. We won't be returning.

VERY helpful man behind the bar and we were also told there would be live jazz. On arrival on the Sunday, the lovely chap remembered our names and took us to our table. We were then tended too very quickly by a pleasant young lady and gave our order for roast beef. Without doubt this was one of the best pub roasts we had ever eaten and there was so much of it too. The beef was perfect and the veggies and yorkies were also perfect, The jazz was also extremely pleasant to listen too. All in all, top pub, top food and great staff. The Clifford Arms has become our favoured 'local' over the last few months. The proprietors, Dominic and Kirsty, and the bar assistant, Alfie, unfailingly provide a warm welcome, the beer is good and more reasonably-priced than some other local hostelries, the pub is reasonably spacious without losing its sense of cosiness, and the food is excellent.Yesterday evening they laid on their first wine-tasting evening, and it was a huge success. For a derisory fee of fifteen pounds per head (and I'm sure they'll need to charge more next time) we were treated to no fewer than eight glasses of quality wine presented as contrasting pairs for comparison, with detailed introduction and background from 'Stan' - who was passionate, incredibly well-informed, entertaining, and capable of helping even a total wine-ignoramus like me appreciate the qualities of the offerings a little more intelligently! If it had just been the wine, that would have been an incredibly good deal, but with each pair of wines we were presented with accompanying dishes of delicious food to share along the table, in quantities so generous that quite a lot was left over. I've been vegetarian for decades, but have to confess that I lapsed and indulged in some of the smoked salmon, though resisted the delicious-looking beef and chicken. There were plenty of other dishes for me to choose from, ranging from goat's cheese mousse to red pepper dip, home-baked bread rolls to a wonderful celeriac soup.Numbers were limited to just twenty people so everybody could hear Stan's fascinating comments and explanations, and the atmosphere was fun and celebratory. A really fine evening was had by all, and we will definitely be hoping to go to the Clifford's next wine-tasting. The Clifford is a huge asset to Shaldon. I just wish they'd open a branch in Teignmouth where we live!

The next night we decided to go there for dinner as we saw the chalkboard outside advertising food. Got in there at 18:00, asked for a table and the fella behind the bar stated they were not taking anymore bookings that night. Might be an idea to announce that on the chalkboard? Nice place, nice beer, friendly staff but the organisation could do with a bit of fine tuning.
