Churchill's Fish & Chips in Braintree

£4.49 for a large chips that are all black and rotten! Never in my 43 years of life had such a poor portion of chips that was so small for £4.49! Will never use this chippy again and will advise everyone else too!!!!

Waited 90 mins for delivery , food was cold and tasted like it was sat there all day, chips was just a giant mashed potato, won't be using no more

Thought I would try Churchill’s so purchased on 30/01 and found worms in my fish. As in multiple. Unfortunately I didn’t realise until I had already eaten quite a bit of it. Not to mention that the lady who served me was very unwelcoming but that pales in comparison to eating worms. Thank you.

This place has gone downhill fast, kids running the place that have no idea about good fish and chips. The sausages were Luke warm and the savaloys cold,. Chips were the worst I've ever had ....reheated maybe yesterday's left overs. This used to be the bes chippy in the area!!!

I arrived here looking forward to a big chips supper tonight and it said u r open till 10 pm and your service wasent good enough u were shutting up and could only give what's was left just a regular disappointed wasent what I expected sorry

This is a traditional fish and chip shop which is part of a chain. It’s a well run business offering a good service. The fish and chips are usually but not always excellent. Sometimes when business is slack the food may have been in the storage cabinet too long. Service is good, the staff work hard and there’s usually enough people on duty. I always order on line for click and collect which works reasonably well.

Large cod and chips is what I ordered. I got a medium at best and that's being generous. The fish was dry with burned bits of batter. I suspect it was the last of the fish and they couldn't be bothered to cook any fresh. The chips were wet and cold, £12+ for the experience. Absolutely awful. I only gave one star because zero wasn't an option. Never again.

A nice piece of haddock spoiled by soggy thick batter, accompanied by a mountain of cold soggy chips, enough for the whole street, now in the bin! Unappetizing or what, and all for a small haddock, chips and a Wally. Won’t be going back

Anita was fantastic very informative and helpful.... Above and beyond I will be returning and now more so now I have my loyalty card! Had the lunchtime special which I was prompted towards and I wasn't disappointed. All in all good lunch and good experience.

Freshly cooked fish is a plus although the batter was not cooked inside.. gloopy bits coating the fish. The fish was however nice and fresh. Chips had obviously been standing a while as they were cold and the thinner bits were hard. Worst of all the curry sauce.. standing in open polystyrene pots in the warmer it had a thick skin/crust, which I pointed out. Had I known it was £2.95 (couldn't see the price on price list) I would not have bought it. It's usually no more than £1.50 at worst. Disappointing to say the least. Girls serving were friendly. No doubt the stock response regarding discussion with the team will be the reply but based on other recent reviews not much is being done.

Had such a lovely meal this evening, the food arrived quickly and piping hot! thanks to my driver Sam, seemed like a lovely chap! Will definitely be ordering again soon :)

We thought they were getting better, food quality was going down as prices were going up so didn’t go there for a long while. Heard they got better so had a meal from there a few weeks ago and portions had grown and quality was ok, then we had it again and portion sizes were tiny. Last night wanted something quick so popped in and we had the worst chips I have ever had from any chip shop, appalling, I think they dug them out of the bin and served them up. Dry, burnt, couldn’t get your teeth into some, how on Earth can a chippy be this bad?? Avoid!!

We order "awarad winning" Large Cod and Chips and Pie and Chips. Yuk, the chips were hard, the large cod was not large. The pie that was written up as "delicious pie" was microwaved. I am not sure when the award was won or where, but really. So for £30 plus very very poor will never use again

Delivery service was 2 hours from ordering even when we cancelled due to delay. food arrived cold, over cooked and no chips!!

Would give this place a wide berth, ridiculous prices for a tiny portion.

Ordered £60 of food (£45 with a discount code) for collection. Picked up within 15 minute window and drove the 2 miles home. Found my meal to be missing and the chips rubbery and tepid. One of the adults couldn't eat their cod due to it smelling funny. 20 minutes later my meal had arrived so I had to eat alone whilst the kids and other adults went on with their evening. Pretty disappointing and likely won't order from here ever again. Really miss Pop In in Church Street but will likely go a bit further along and try Tommy Tucker's or UK Fish Bar. A real shame as the chicken nuggets are really nice.

I used to buy from Churchill's regularly but it has been sometime, I was glad I hadn't been for a while. The fish was a good size and cooked freshly (I'll come back to this in a little while). The chips were okay if you wanted half of them edible. Okay the reason for one star. The oil had not been changed since the frier won the 2020 grand prix. As soon as we opened the packet at home it was obvious by the smell the oil was really stale and at £31 for two portions, it wasn't very good value either. I won't be going back there as it's obvious they're cutting costs to the detriment of the product. We both had really bad indigestion after eating les than half of it.

Food is amazing and staff are very friendly. Food is reasonably priced. They have started to deliver and they are just eat. I recommend buying your food from here menu has a wide variety on here so there is sonething for everyone. They even so a glutton free menu .

Friday discounts but very small chip portions - smallest I think I've seen anywhere for a fish and chip shop - we got a large and a small portion. Chips were mediocre. Fish ok. Fish and Saveloy crazy prices like other places nowadays

My son and I stopped into churchills today and was welcomed warmly by Anita. She answered all our questions and was so patient with me when I had to change my order. Ademola cooked our chips and sausage perfectly! Everything was hot and delicious. We will definitely be returning. Anita is an asset to you as she really makes everyone feel welcome.

What a shower of ------- I stood there for 10-15 minuits in front of six " so called chefs " and was completely ignored. I understand that they had pre orders to get out but please don't ignore your walk in customers. Regards mirrors. Ps won't be coming back 😒

Great value. Salt and onion vinegar 😋. Missed these since moving away. Well worth a visit and tasted as good as they always did.

Staff really good and friendly but the fish and chips are poor quality and overpriced.Give people value for money and good product and the punters will arrive in droves!!

Ordered a portion on chip and 4 saveloys and it came to £18, food was cold and nasty! never had any chicken the last 4 times of going there, gone down hill over the last year or so and I reckon it will end up joint the group of empty shops soon enough and won’t be using no more!

My uncle ordered a delivery for 2 fish and chips and a kids jumbo sausage meal. Didn't know what fish was what, as we ordered a large cod and regular haddock the sausage was hard and the chips were absolutely awful Chips were hard and cold and black salt and vinegar was asked for on the cod meal and nothing was put on. The price my uncle paid the food was absolutely disgusting

Went to Witham churchill's fish and,chip shop ,was met by two staff members josh and Alex They were efficient polite funny and worked well together had haddock crispy chips mushy peas and curry sauce, cooked,to perfection good value for money definitely be coming back great team

Portions small and over cooked. The chips looked like the dregs at tgd bottom of the pan. Would have complained but I had walked home. Over 9 pounds for sausage and chips with curry sauce seemed expensive for what it was.

Ordered online - really easy, pick was superb. Ordered small cod and chips but the portions were huge. Really good quality, and very fresh.

If I could give zero stars I would. What a disgusting rip off! Avoid this place. I'll never go back. Pathetic portions, and greasy flaccid fish. Took it back. They actually weighed it. After a rude person insulted us, we eventually had a refund. Very greedy shop indeed.

Awful chips, loud staff too busy gossiping and the sausage in batter must of been allergic to batter! Don't bother, use Tommy Tuckers instead, only reason I didn't was I was walking in the wrong direction home....

Won’t order from Churchill’s again they are over priced and the portions are to small for the price.

Order was taken efficiently and with a welcome. I had to wait for my 7 nuggets to be cooked - that’s ok - my son prefers them nice and fresh ….. but arrive home to the smallest portion of “Large”Chips I have ever seen -a normal large portion from other chip shops would easily serve both of my children. Not this large portion- so disappointing at a cost of £3.99 for this portion. So either I have been served the wrong portion size - or the impact of inflation has rightly hit the potatoes!!! 😱

Disgusting food, can't actually believe the cost for food that wasn't pet worthy, large cod was tiny and obviously had just boxed without me seeing or knowing, was like a £1 Iceland cod fillet, saveloy was rock solid, completely inedible food.

I didn't go into the shop but had fish n chips and mushy peas from them, I really enjoyed them.

Went here for the first time a couple of weeks ago and had exceptionally good fish and chips. Returned this week and it was a very different experience. Husband's cod was good but my plaice had the tiniest bit of fish and far too much batter which was very crunchy and tough to eat. I waited while they cooked the place but the chips were wrapped at the same time as the cod and by the time we got home (two minutes away) they were cold. Perhaps it was an off night and we will try it again but this was not an enjoyable experience.

Disappointed this evening, chips were barely Luke warm , not the same when you have to warm them all up in the microwave......wish I had cooked instead , not enjoyable

We turned up at 9pm on a Friday night. Worst pie I have ever had, tiny piece of haddock, and chips that were almost certainly cooked at lunch time. Did I mention that it was cold and for what we had, vastly overpriced. Absolute rubbish. Go to the Chinese next door.

Forgot about the review below so there I was again. Madness ordered large Cod and chips. The fish was way over cooked and sadly undersized. The chips were cold and soggy. Never again. The worst steak pie and chips every. Chips come in a thousand pieces your lucky to get a whole chip. The S&K pie had as much flavour as cardboard.

Considering it was a medium haddock and chips it was rather on the small side, I think I must of had most of the hard chips at the bottom of the pan, nice curry sauce but only a small carton for 2.95…. All together with delivery it was over £18 for ONE meal and it turned up half hour later than the online site said overall pretty bad!!

Absolutely awful chips. Overcooked hard and tasteless. Asked if I wanted salt and vinegar and got neither. Threw em in the bin and a total wate of my money.

I've downgraded my previous review because portion sizes have got ridiculously small, a large chips is not adequate for the price or title and also repeatedly after ordering both large and medium fish I cannot tell the size difference I think they are all mediums regardless of what you ask for, considering Churchill's its one of the more expensive chip shops It dosent stack up compared to others in the area.

Worst cod & chips we've ever had. The place has gone so far downhill it's reached the bottom. The cod & chips was absolutely disgusting. The cod was horrible & the chips way undercooked, they were hard in the middle. It all went in the bin after one mouthful. The staff especially the girl who served us, need lessons in customer service. We wasted £20, we've learnt our lesson. Never ever again.

Last week visited and purchased in shop. Lovely! This week , click and collect. Chips stacked on top of fish. Fish stuck to grease roof paper, chips 60% bits and pieces (small potatoes) .Dried up, kept hot for too long. We were early! . Large fish was a long tail 20% skin. That’s a customer lost. You lose them all 1 at a time!

I’ve never been served a crispy savaloy before. I had to leave it as I didn’t want to get food poisoning.

Absolutely rubbish, over priced and slowest delivery. Here we go again, spent £69 for a 50th meal and was ruined by incomplete order .Will never use again

Food was really nice and filling. I ordered off just eat they where quick to get the food out. 2 things that didn't quite make it 5 ⭐s. They missed out some of our order and in my partners food there was black hair.

Waited 2 hours for our delivery and was told we had to come in to pick it up if we wanted our food. We then collected our food and was refused a refund of the delivery costs. Will not be ordering again.

Front counter service has improved but still onus appears to be towards online orders taking preference over customers who come in off the street. Food nearly always good, nice to be greeted by a few happier faces behind the counter too.

Have to agree this place has really gone downhill. Sometimes it can be good but nowadays more often poor. Tonight's was terrible, time to move on to another chippy.

Had more staff than customers… Additionally, had a lad with a bowler hat who could probably do with a lesson in customer services. Not good value for money either …….

Get well cooked fish when you turn up at shop, but delivery, not so.

Placed our order at 18.58 with delivery expected between 19.30 & 19 50, chased at 8.15 to be told they are a driver down and our order was being wrapped and sent now, chased again at 20.45, surprise surprise their phone lines are engaged probably due to them closing shortly, jumped in the car and drove to the takeaway myself to be greeted by a very young staff to be told its on its way, what two hours later? Food arrived stone cold, what a waste of time and money, no apology, was such a good establisvment but has gone completely down hill, AVOID!

Not the cheapest around but always used to be good quality and our go to chippy. Not so the last few visits.last night the meals we ordered were disgusting.chips tasted vile old and hard or overcooked. Pies were both dry like they had been sitting around awhile, pastry hard and fishy tasting.sausage didn't taste good either.on top of it all charged me for a ketchup bottle never received. All went in the bin after a couple of mouthfuls.wish we had gone for a Chinese instead.will.be a long time before we try here again.

Huge order for a famy of nine, what couldn't they have got wrong, burnt cold burgers in the burnt grease laiden buns that were lucky enough to have actually had them put inside and not just forgotten, horrible experience will never be eating from this toilet again

Not sure why an order for a hamburger turns into a chicken burger. No tartare sauce for the scampi and chips. Also no salt and vinegar as per the order. Phoned to ask why... No reason given.. Oh well won't order again

When some time ago I went to shop and ordered fish and chips, the product was very good. This time, Saturday 24th July, I had home delivery. Disaster!!, not only was it 50 mins late, but order not as requested, no salt or vinegar on mine, which was requested on line, and also, cold, and the majority was put into food waste as it was inedible. Seems like home delivery, you get what they send, and cannot phone as automated reply says too busy. Will NEVER order from these again. So, all out there, be aware. Don't order delivery, or better still, don't order.

Used to be great but has really gone downhill recently. Occasionally you get a great meal but most orders recently have been Dr and overcooked. Every order is a roll of the dice! Ordered a vegan goujon burger and it was cooked to a crisp, with no sauce or lettuce! Chips aren't as good as they used to be either. Very sad tbh :/ Edit to add that both me and my partner got sick from this meal!!!

Brilliant food, fresh and tasty. Their chips are to die for. Drivers are always so friendly.

Really not good tonight. We have had before and no issues tonight the food arrived it was freezing and the pickled onion was black and smelt horrible it was black inside and out. Time to look for another chip shop
