Churchill's Fish & Chips in Braintree

Hadn't been here in while and I was surprised to see the negative reviews as we've always enjoyed it. Last night we got 3 portions of selects and mozzarella sticks to add to our dinner of wraps and salad. Obviously we could have made the chicken etc ourselves from supermarket produce but have loved the chicken tenders in the past so spent £20 on a treat. What a disappointment. They've completely changed their chicken, where it used to be actual chicken and tasty crispy breadcrumbs, it's now frozen reconstituted rubbish that we're mushy and flavourless. The mozzarella sticks were almost solid and undercooked. Such a shame to see a local business like this go so rapidly downhill but you've lost another customer sadly.

We have been before, but food was very, very greasy this time. So may try others in Witham.

Worst takeaway iv had from Churchill’s!!! Won’t be ordering anything again. Gone down hill badly.

Ordered large chips and got a small portion delivered Not the first time this has happened.

Chips were gorgeous as always. Fish was fresh and tasty with a really light, crispy batter and the curry sauce is gorgeous! 1 complaint - portion was tiny!! I ate it and had to go and get a sarny! Not really worth the £20 it cost, sorry!

Sausage was over cooked outside and under cooked inside. Chips tasted as if they was rare gone cold and been precooked. Over cooked outside and mushy and tasteless inside and overly greasey

Large chips was almost the same as regular chips . Considering the price it was a very poor portion. Disappointed.

This is £18 worth is expensive but very nice Chips 7/10 Fish 9/10 Delivery 10/10 A* Portion 6/10 Price 6/10

Of 50+ orders online and in person, this is the first bad one, it was delicious as always but.. there were 2 rather large bones in the fish. I hope this is just a one-off... -Curry man

Food was only warm not hot - delivery girl tried to say no one was home, but clearly failed to notice the front door was open.

I don’t know how they manage it, after all, it’s not hard to cook chips but their chips are always hard and chewy. Pies, sausages, saveloys are all ok but damn their chips are awful

I am not sure what has happened at this place but it has gone from a nice local chippy to a place where they don’t understand what you are asking and what you want. Poor service skills and worse delivery times. Terribly disappointed

Really disappointed, ordered food from here before after then saying chips and vegan items cooked separately. Went in today to be told everything is cooked together. Won’t be going there again :-(

Went today to be told their vegan food is cooked with non-vegan food so not even suitable for a vegetarian nor someone with allergies. Previously they have told us differently which we are pretty unhappy about.

Food was lovely but we were missing all our drinks!

Worm in the fish will never eat fish again absolutely repulsed! Called up and complained and they only refunded me £16.50 of £23.24 very petty. The sausage went in the bin as there was no way I was eating any thing else from here and they kept the money for the delivery how very petty!

Food was delivered quickly and nice and warm but the kids chicken hero's portion was tiny. My 7 year old was still hungry after eating his meal and he is not a big eater. I phoned them to complain and they responded that this was the portion size. I ordered the same thing 2 weeks ago and the portion was much bigger and would feed my son easily. I explained this and the lady then said that they had changed supplier so the portions are now smaller. To still be charging £8 for such a tiny portion is ludacris. I was told that when I order them again to be aware that this is the new portion size in which I stressed I will NOT be ordering them again. This is a meal that would suit a toddler, not a child. We have ordered from here numerous times and never had any issues. So this is a real shame.

My food was cold and inedible. Fish tasted old and chips had clearly been reheated from old stock. I felt really unwell after eating this and won’t be using this shop again

Came here yesterday for large chips and battered sausage. Food was nice large chips seem like the common regular size but the battered sausage was probably one of the best I ever had. It came to around £7.50 so not cheap as chips near £5 alone.

Consistently good fish supper, efficiently and carefully prepared.

My order was delivered over 90 mins after my order which is way in excess of the normal response time.

Just bought pie & chips from here an they went stright in the bin as a OAP I can not afford to pay £12.49 to throw food away I wouldn't have given this to an animal there wasn't one actual whole chip among them the whole lot was stone cold you should be ashamed of yourself serving food like that it was disgusting....

£4.49 for a large chips that are all black and rotten! Never in my 43 years of life had such a poor portion of chips that was so small for £4.49! Will never use this chippy again and will advise everyone else too!!!!

Really nice food but a bit stingy on chip portion

The food was cold and the portions were small. Not worth the money. Haven’t ordered from here for a while and thought we’d give it another chance. We won’t make that mistake again. There are far better places to eat in Witham.

We ordered a battered sausage but received a normal sausage and there was barely a regular size chips.

The food was delivered a lot earlier than was expected which was great, unfortunately the food was cold when it arrived so we’d rather have waited longer and got hot food. Quality of the food was good had it been warm.

Waited 90 mins for delivery , food was cold and tasted like it was sat there all day, chips was just a giant mashed potato, won't be using no more

Thought I would try Churchill’s so purchased on 30/01 and found worms in my fish. As in multiple. Unfortunately I didn’t realise until I had already eaten quite a bit of it. Not to mention that the lady who served me was very unwelcoming but that pales in comparison to eating worms. Thank you.

im so angry i wont go into detail all i can say is food was late cold and disgusting 🤢 to the point my kids wouldnt touch it! shame as chirchills use to be amazing gone down hill!

Was extremely early. All was awesome apart from the chips. They were diabolical. Majority were old triple probably more than that cooked. Hard and unbeatable. Shame. Love picking up a fresh order but used just eat this time. Shame. Not to worry. Will get fresh next time

Having read recent reviews saying Churchills has gone downhill I decided to ignore them and ordered regardless, after all it’s always been very good on previous orders. 20 minutes after I was expecting my food I was full of regret about ignoring the negative reviews. Obviously the food arrived cold, this included the mushy peas which usually stay hot for 2-3 working days. Don’t make the same mistake I did.

This place has gone downhill fast, kids running the place that have no idea about good fish and chips. The sausages were Luke warm and the savaloys cold,. Chips were the worst I've ever had ....reheated maybe yesterday's left overs. This used to be the bes chippy in the area!!!

Food was quite hot, fish beautiful and white, batter was a little greasy, but still nice, chips were proper chip shop chips. Price fairly reasonable, thoroughly enjoyed my fish and chips, would buy from Churchills again definitely 😊👍.

I arrived here looking forward to a big chips supper tonight and it said u r open till 10 pm and your service wasent good enough u were shutting up and could only give what's was left just a regular disappointed wasent what I expected sorry

Food was cold, and poorly put together. Burgers falling apart, chips stuck to bag from grease and delivery bag ripped. Chicken burger had no salad, although had requested and paid for! Very upset

I was notified my food on the way at 18:27pm, it arrived stone cold at 19:21 ! Stone cold fish and chips that were soggy and cold!! I had already contacted just eat and they updated the eta, but it was still late. Really poor service

This is a traditional fish and chip shop which is part of a chain. It’s a well run business offering a good service. The fish and chips are usually but not always excellent. Sometimes when business is slack the food may have been in the storage cabinet too long. Service is good, the staff work hard and there’s usually enough people on duty. I always order on line for click and collect which works reasonably well.

Great food as always. Unusual for them to be late, so put that down to the staff being so busy. Merry Christmas to you all. 🎄

freshly cooked and nice and hot!

Although the delivery was early, it wasn't a big problem. However, the food was a different problem. it was nearly cold and not at all edible.

Exceptional quality piping hot food

I don’t normally review but I was disappointed with the order tonight I’ve order a few times now and never had any issues always good quality but tonight the batteries sausages was soggy and wasn’t fully cooked and the chips also very greasy and soggy. (Normal very tasty) and my curry sauce tastes like mental.

Food over 30mins later than scheduled. Food stone cold and had to reheat everything just to eat it! Phoned up the shop and was told that there was heavy traffic and traffic lights to blame - basically was not the shops problem and mine! Will never order again which is a shame but the service and food is just atrocious.

Large cod and chips is what I ordered. I got a medium at best and that's being generous. The fish was dry with burned bits of batter. I suspect it was the last of the fish and they couldn't be bothered to cook any fresh. The chips were wet and cold, £12+ for the experience. Absolutely awful. I only gave one star because zero wasn't an option. Never again.

Ordered at 6pm, delivery time said 7.05-7.25pm food had not arrived by 7.30pm so called churchills who explained that it was due in 10mins, they apologised and only offered free delivery off next order (£2.99) from a £50 order.. it arrived a further 25mins after this totalling to 115mins wait from time of ordering. The food finally arrived luke warm and edible.- wouldn’t recommend and would certainly think twice about ordering again.

very expensive for very little.

A nice piece of haddock spoiled by soggy thick batter, accompanied by a mountain of cold soggy chips, enough for the whole street, now in the bin! Unappetizing or what, and all for a small haddock, chips and a Wally. Won’t be going back

Anita was fantastic very informative and helpful.... Above and beyond I will be returning and now more so now I have my loyalty card! Had the lunchtime special which I was prompted towards and I wasn't disappointed. All in all good lunch and good experience.

Food is OK,sadly took 25 mins to be delivered after saying it was out and food is quite cold

Freshly cooked fish is a plus although the batter was not cooked inside.. gloopy bits coating the fish. The fish was however nice and fresh. Chips had obviously been standing a while as they were cold and the thinner bits were hard. Worst of all the curry sauce.. standing in open polystyrene pots in the warmer it had a thick skin/crust, which I pointed out. Had I known it was £2.95 (couldn't see the price on price list) I would not have bought it. It's usually no more than £1.50 at worst. Disappointing to say the least. Girls serving were friendly. No doubt the stock response regarding discussion with the team will be the reply but based on other recent reviews not much is being done.

Received food and realised that was missing half chicken, chips were cold and hard, burger was dry and overcooked missing cheese, chips hard and cold, kids nugget meal missing only kids meal received was kids sausage meal, tried to call restaurant, kept getting hung up and line going dead

The food was barely warm. Very disappointed. You tick salt and vinegar and it is never included

Food tasted good but quite annoyed that I paid extra for large chips and it was the same amount as regular chips and you gave me half a pot of curry sauce very overpriced for the portion sizes.

Food was late, cold and missing items.

Food was very nice but unfortunately it was over an hour late! No communication and impossible to get through to restaurant! Ordered just before 7pm and didn’t actually arrive until almost 9pm! Refund was refused after contacting yourselves, very disappointing customer service!

We thought they were getting better, food quality was going down as prices were going up so didn’t go there for a long while. Heard they got better so had a meal from there a few weeks ago and portions had grown and quality was ok, then we had it again and portion sizes were tiny. Last night wanted something quick so popped in and we had the worst chips I have ever had from any chip shop, appalling, I think they dug them out of the bin and served them up. Dry, burnt, couldn’t get your teeth into some, how on Earth can a chippy be this bad?? Avoid!!

After a bad experience 3 years ago we thought we luck try again. Really wish we hadn’t! 1 hour and a half for cold food and overcooked dry chips as well as very greasy chicken! Never again so annoyed we tried again.

We order "awarad winning" Large Cod and Chips and Pie and Chips. Yuk, the chips were hard, the large cod was not large. The pie that was written up as "delicious pie" was microwaved. I am not sure when the award was won or where, but really. So for £30 plus very very poor will never use again

Delivery service was 2 hours from ordering even when we cancelled due to delay. food arrived cold, over cooked and no chips!!

Would give this place a wide berth, ridiculous prices for a tiny portion.

Order from here before and normally ok, however tonight the food was disappointing. Cod was over cooked and tasted horrible savaloy a were also majorly over cooked. Overall one disappointed family and wasted money.

Ordered £60 of food (£45 with a discount code) for collection. Picked up within 15 minute window and drove the 2 miles home. Found my meal to be missing and the chips rubbery and tepid. One of the adults couldn't eat their cod due to it smelling funny. 20 minutes later my meal had arrived so I had to eat alone whilst the kids and other adults went on with their evening. Pretty disappointing and likely won't order from here ever again. Really miss Pop In in Church Street but will likely go a bit further along and try Tommy Tucker's or UK Fish Bar. A real shame as the chicken nuggets are really nice.

I used to buy from Churchill's regularly but it has been sometime, I was glad I hadn't been for a while. The fish was a good size and cooked freshly (I'll come back to this in a little while). The chips were okay if you wanted half of them edible. Okay the reason for one star. The oil had not been changed since the frier won the 2020 grand prix. As soon as we opened the packet at home it was obvious by the smell the oil was really stale and at £31 for two portions, it wasn't very good value either. I won't be going back there as it's obvious they're cutting costs to the detriment of the product. We both had really bad indigestion after eating les than half of it.

Hot and delicious. Have never had a bad meal from here. Portion sizes are just right too 👍🏻

Food is amazing and staff are very friendly. Food is reasonably priced. They have started to deliver and they are just eat. I recommend buying your food from here menu has a wide variety on here so there is sonething for everyone. They even so a glutton free menu .
