Church on the Hill in Glasgow City

Previously reviewed this pub last year and gave it 5* and would have given it more if I could at the time. HOWEVER it has slowly diminished in quality, value, and all round services. It sadly no longer possess any personality. The beer garden is full of tacky plastic plants, the inside is not well kept, staff look without a soul and the drink prices have been hiked up. The only positive I can mention is they allow dogs in still. Plenty decent pubs in the area to compete with and unfortunately Church On The Hill just aren't up to scratch. Make a change before it's too late.

Pre match at Hampden, food was.ok but with amount of ppl etc it was to be expected

A bit of a barn but a good selection of beers!

Enjoyed dinner here on Saturday, April 6 as a family of four around 6pm. The food was tasty and very enjoyable and was reasonably priced. The staff were helpful and efficient. There was also a good vibe in the place. We'll have no hesitation about returning.

Absolutely shocking service on Easter Monday! Drinks came fairly quick but 3 of us were drinking water as we were really there for food. 2 starters ordered which arrived 55mins after ordering. More time waiting for our 5 main courses but we gave up and walked out after a total of 1hr 45 minutes!!! Nobody offered us an apology or an explanation. I can honestly say, I've never experienced this in my entire life. Quite unbelievable!!!

Scott was brilliant and majestic but didn’t give didn’t give out his number Ali was better is service and banter, in the completion Ali was a 10 and Scott 9. Kev was a great manager. Had the bar the sorted 😊

Booked for 730, friend arrived,745 ordered quickly, her starter came, our mains didn't arrive till 9pm, order taken for my sweet, it was brought while i was still eating main, food was good, but friend got wrong coffee. Staff friendly

The staff is very friendly and welcoming. Dogs are welcome and well catered for, bowls of water provided. Pleasant atmosphere and sports channels throughout premises.

Lovely bar / restaurant with great staff.

First time visiting church on the hill on Saturday to watch the Scotland wales rugby game and it did not disappoint. Considering how busy the place was, it still had a very welcoming atmosphere, especially for people who are not locals! …and its dog friendly, what’s not to love?! We were served at the bar straight away and shortly after managed to find a seat to relax and watch the game. Everyone was so friendly and in such good spirits, not to mention the bar and kitchen were still doing table service which was super fast so we didn’t have to move! Staff were polite and made sure we were sorted throughout the day/night. We tried some of the Scottish tapas and it was absolutely delicious! Just the kind of nibble you need when out for drinks with friends. I can’t wait to try the rest of the menu. We stayed until late and also got to hear some of the live music that was on which was really good! I will most definitely be back with friends and family to enjoy more of what this venue has to offer. Ticks all the boxes for me! Ps I loved the interior. It gave off a very clean and cozy yet stylish vibe. 10/10. Thank you (:

The food was very good overall. The soup and macaroni was excellent. I had the chocolate brownie which was very poor. It had been microwaved and was rock hard and almost inedible. My biggest complaint is the 20% NHS discount which they refused to accept because we were eating of the weekday menu. I think it's sad to see a restaurant offer no discount to the people who worked through COVID. Then to add insult they add 10% service charge to the bill every time without consultation. This sours the occasion every time as you realize they have no appreciation for NHS staff. They advertised as a local restaurant, employing local people. I wish they would remember they have local customers and show a bit more respect to them.

Although the food was lovely as it always is I was disappointed that the church on the hill refused to give us an nhs discount.everytime I go I always get the discount but last week we were refused.when we queried this we were told because we had our food from the cheaper menu we werent entitled to our discount.this I feel was rubbish.plus we were charged 8.95 service charge.so our bill with the service charge was 76.00 .

Just back. They were doing a 30% off in January offer but didn't tell us and didn't apply it to the bill. The bill was incorrect anyway, and they had added a service charge on of £7 ! I asked for the bill to be correctly adjusted, they altered it to its correct price (still no 30% off though) but kept the same £7 service charge that they had applied to the first larger and incorrect bill ! 10% service charge of our correct total would only have been £5 but by this point I had lost the will to live. My food was dry and burnt. Restaurant was freezing cold. Felt like they were trying to squeeze as much cash out of you as possible.

Early Saturday lunchtime, no atmosphere, food was good, and service was adequate. The football was on every TV which killed the atmosphere. I get it that it's a sports bar, but please consider your clientele! Premises clean and tidy. I would go back.

Very nice place with good food and fabulous service. Their soft drinks are only by the can so no fountain drinks. It's beautifully decorated for Christmas.

Clean, family friendly place to eat standard food. It is quite spacious & has some pretty large tables so useful if going somewhere as a group. The food is nice but pretty expensive for fairly standard pub grub. The staff greet guy & show you to a table, and it is table service, but I’ve been in a few times now and found that once you’re served you’re largely ignored so it’s difficult to order another drink or pay the bill. It is VERY busy when there are sports things on at Hampden so definitely book or avoid at those times.

Had our Christmas night out here at the weekend, fabulous staff, delicious food and a great atmosphere. Our night was made made very memorable by Chris and the team. Will definitely be back soon! Thank you.

Fantastic food including vegan options. Service was incredibly slow and our food took a long time to come. It's worth knowing that they don't have high chairs to fit their tall tables. Our wee one would've been sitting below, pretty much under the table in the one they offered us. We also had to ask for it 3 times before it showed up. Dog and family friendly but when we were there on a Sunday afternoon it wasnt ideal for wee ones because they had the football on with the sound blaring. There's also no pram/wheelchair access. We had to carry our pram up/down the steps to get in and out. The staff didn't even notice let alone offer any help. Overall I'd say the food is great, the service is poor, and it's not really child friendly.

We had a great time for our Christmas night out. Staff were great really friendly big shout to Chris what a guy!! Went above and beyond. Nothing was too much hassle, Both food and drinks enjoyed by all.

I like bar. Find staff super nice and helpful. Have been for a beer watching football. Solid venue. Food is a LITLE hit and miss. Me and missus have had hot dog, chicken kebab, both v good, then Sunday roast two course a couple of Sundays apart. Friendly observations: - Sunday roast menu needs more options. Like just an extra starter and maybe extra pudding (ice cream). Don’t get me wrong, soup is nice enough but not feeling the sweetcorn thing. - the crumble ain’t a crumble. It just isn’t. It’s stewed fruit - with a memory of crumble. Trade description issue there 😉. Sorbet is v nice though 👍 - the Sunday roast we had, the beef wasn’t like thin cuts from roast sirloin or brisket - it was one of those really thin steak things, that went a bit curly. And frozen, bullet hard Yorkies. The standard on the Sunday roast, weeks apart, felt like a completely different restaurant/bar tbh. Almost felt we were late in, better stuff had gone and had to think on their feet. If that’s the case, I’d say best action is to say just ran out. If that wasn’t case, puzzled and little disappointed could be so different few weeks apart?🤷🏻‍♂️ Overall though, as I say, solid place. Defo go back. Lots of food good. Staff lovely. Nice venue.

I happened be on the Southside with my wee pal Eddie, so thought I’d pop in and see how the old Church is doing, Lyndsay was looking after me on my table, as always, she gave Eddie a few treats and a cuddle and a bowl of water. I love how dog friendly Church is! After attending to Eddie my Cold Town lager arrived. Then my food, I had the chicken wings with buffalo sauce!! It was really nice! I wasn’t mega hungry, so it hit the spot! I’ll always make Church on the Hill my first choice when over on that side of Glasgow!! :)

Had a great meal in Church on the Hill with friends. Food was fantastic and the service we received from Lyndsay was excellent! Despite one of the group having dietary requirements nothing was too much trouble and she couldn’t have been more helpful with recommendations. Can’t wait for our next visit!

Popped in to watch the Scotland game, as this is our first choice of bar to come to for watching games. I was starving, so I ordered as a starter the Korean chicken tenders, and then a steak pie - £14.95 for 2 courses……i might add!! Portion is amazing, well worth it!! The service off Ollie & Lindsay was the best! We left happy and not hungry!

Visited for drinks last weekend - great setting, nice venue, good atmosphere and very friendly staff especially our waitress Anna who recommended the Cold Town Beer - we tried the lager and the IPA which were both enjoyed. On the recommendation of our waitress we had the cheesecake which was lovely. The fact it’s dog friendly makes it an option even just for dog walkers passing by. We’ll be back.

Your barkeep, Scott, recommended his favourite cocktail, I think it was called “The French Martini”. It was my first time trying such a concoction and it was simply delicious, he’s such a talent and a charming young man. If only I was 10 years younger!

Had a really lovely meal with friends, particularly loved the beef - cooked to absolute perfection! We stayed on after for drinks as the atmosphere and service was just amazing. Thanks to Scott for looking after us all afternoon! Will be back!!!

My recent visit to Church on the Hill was made memorable by the Geordie chap behind the bar. The staff were all friendly, but Scott in particular welcomed us with a warm smile and friendly tone. He was extremely attentive to myself and my wife offering advice on the menu and making sure we were topped up with drinks whenever we were approaching an empty glass. His ability to anticipate our requests without being overbearing added greatly to our experience. Despite the busy atmosphere, Scott was prompt and made us feel valued. Will be back

I was in on Monday night and was served by a lovely bartender with the most majestic Geordie accent - his name might have been Scott? He made us some lovely cocktails, the new hot toddy one in particular was class. Can't wait to return!

Food was a 10/10, would recommend the 2 courses for 14.95 did not disappoint. Lovley decor inside and great atmosphere. Would definitely recommend this resturant/bar. Have a good selection of cocktails also.

Not been in for a while, really nice experience.

Really poor, booked a table one of my friends is on crutches. No mention in booking confirmation about giving table back. At 7:15 told we must give up table and pay our bill; asked the girl if there is any other tables we could move to the girl said go ask at the bar! Having been moved from the table I asked the guy at front of house is there any place we could sit seeing as my friend is crutches, he said standing room only. I said to the guy nothing on my booking confirmation said about giving the table back at 7:15, he Essentially called me lair. Place was empty all afternoon apart from us drinking then they shift us as soon as it’s busy; won’t be back service is awful and people working here are very unpleasant

Had a great lunch experience here. We all chose from the set menu and each dish was really good. Portions went above and beyond! Every member of staff was pleasant and attentive. Would definitely recommend.

The menu was very limited and didn’t have a lot to offer. Small starter choice, expensive for what was on offer. Tasted more like pre-made supermarket but supermarket was better. Rice was hard and in was in lumps stuck together. Over priced for what you order. However the staff we had were great. I suggest people look at menu before going.

I like this pub. It had all the right elements, nice beer garden, decent beer and a nice indoor space. Unfortunately it does seem a bit soulless and lacking in atmosphere, but I only visit during the day, so evenings could be a totally different experience. Definitely worth a visit.

After a hot sticky walk around Queens Park we ended up capturing a few well earned refreshments in this quaint pub. Staff were attentive, god range of drinks and eats, lovely ambience both inside and outside, as well as being dog friendly. Well worth a visit.

Very disappointing experience tonight, bar staff were un un attentive and arrogant. Paying at the bar with card and being asked to contribute towards tips , WHY for Funaementally pouring a pint ? Won’t be back.

Did not like the steak pie at all not keen on the herb additions prefer traditional thick gravy and veg on the side not inside the ashet thought the alcohol prices were rather high.

Im stuck between a rock and a hard place, the service was pretty good, but I was in for my 18th and one week birthday celebration, and I love a baby Guinness, so, I thought i'd try a daddy Guinness, it was distgusting, I was fully expecting the taste of a baby one. I asked the bar guy if he would swap it for something else, but he refused, as it wasn't their fault I disliked such a rotten drink. I think the bar man should of told me in advance, it tatstes nothing like a baby one. I am not at fault here. I blame the place it was made, in Dublin. I will be back, as there was a cute dog in the bar. But I won't be ordering that muck again.

Was booked in for dinner and drinks on sat 20th august. Before we even got there we received great service. I spoke with Lauren on the phone who managed to squeeze us in last minute on the day and also had went above and beyond to amend our booking as we were running late. From the get go we were taken care of by Lauren who checked in on us often and made sure we constantly had drinks and water also. She also recommended some different beers to try based on what we were drinking and for us being fussy drinkers we genuinely really enjoyed them! Portion sizes were excellent, I had the steak frites which was perfectly done and flavoured brilliantly. Felt welcomed from Lauren and all other passing members of staff the whole night. Not a single terrible pint poured🙌🏻 Great extensive menu and very well priced considering the location, will be back for the hampden days ⚽️

Came here for lunch and certainly did not disappoint! We were early so Lauren directed us to Shawlands Cross for a quick wander and then back up the hill. They have obviously converted the church and kept the stained glass windows. They welcome dogs in the bar area and have a great restaurant section. We stayed at the bar and watched the dogs that came in, My monkfish scampi was absolutely packed with flavour whilst hubby's stake pie was superb. No room for desserts which is a shame. Love the vibe of the place, friendly staff and amazing food. Just need to come back without the car next time round!

Great place with amazing stuff. The food is delicious and portions enormous. And there is a dog wall of fame thus yet another reason to come back.

It's certainly not what I expected, and the wait was REALLY long. It took over 20 minutes before we even got to see a menu after we sat down. Food was alright, cocktails were pretty good. I'll give them another shot in the future to see if it was a one-off busy evening.

This place is ace. A friend told me to pop in and it didn’t disappoint. From the food to the drink all incredible. Staff were very friendly. One staff member called Louis was so lovely, his cocktails were amazing wish every bar had a Louis in it.

Had a few hours to spare so popped in here, had some cocktails made by the barman Louis. His attitude and attention to details was spot on and the drinks were lovely. Highly recommend this place for casual drinks and food!

Great food. Drinks a bit pricey. Plenty of outdoor seating when the weather plays fair. * edit - drinks everywhere are getting pricey tbf! I prefer Malbec wine and that tends to be expensive anywhere so I was maybe being unfair on reflection. The staff here are so awesome and attentive, and thus, the 5 stars. I don't ever 5 star lightly!

Real nice place. Only had a flying visit so far to be honest but was great, also real pretty with tons going on.

Had the steak for 2 deal. 2 steaks, 2 sides, 2 sauces plus you also get chips, onion rings and corn on the cob with the steaks. And a bottle of white, red or rose wine. It was all delicious and amazing value for money!

Stopped by for some food on a busy evening when they had a quiz on. Food took some time but we didn't mind waiting as we had been warned that they were busy. I got the steak and fries which when it arrived was delicious but I only seemed to have half a steak when I had paid over £20 for it. The food was good but would've been better if I could've had the full steak, couldn't understand why it had been cut in half? The quiz was good.

A tener en cuenta que hablamos poco inglés, se hicieron entender muy bien. Pedimos dos cervezas escocesas, recomendadas por el camarero. Luego pedimos dos hamburguesas chesse&Bacon. La hamburguesa no me gustó nada. Mi marido en cambio si se la comió. Las patatas de acompañamiento, las mejores que he probado. Volvimos a los dos días. Pedimos las mismas cervezas porque estaban buenísimas! Y esta vez pedimos 3 entrantes. Patatas trufadas, nachos y alitas marinadas. Estaba todo buenisimo! Nos encantó. Excellent food all round, came in and had a mix of drinks and lunch deal menu, All food came out well, good recommendations by the staff, and a brilliant venue Kieran and the other waitress who’s name I didn’t catch looked after us very well...

Louis and Chris were really friendly and helpful. The food was really great too! Would highly recommend it! We had a great time.

Burger was very gristly. For £13 I would have expected much better.

I only gave the Church on the Hill 4 stars because I didn't sample the food. The pla e is vast but homely . The staff are very pleased and helpful and the choice of beers is impressive .

Having just returned from holiday we were looking for somewhere to end our holiday time. We had a lovely lunch, superb choice and great service, Amber & Kieran were excellent, making sure we had what we needed but without continually interrupting us. Have no hesitation...

Better than expected. Food is pretty decent, if pub basic, as are the range of drinks. Staff are generally friendly and efficient but one or two act like they are better than being in the service industry.

Came for a cold one, but stayed for a first-class fiesta of hospitality. Our host dubbed as Kieran or for the staunch regulars Papa Keeks, who serves beyond the industry’s standard of professionalism, quite simply ate and left no crumbs of doubt. No Papa, no party.

Church on the hill has always been my favourite bar and restaurant to go to, until 2 weeks ago when I went for a mocktail and a chicken burger at lunch time. My burger arrived (took its time), bit into it, and it was fully raw! I'm very delicate with my meat and this made me sick the rest of the day, not ohysically sick, but very nauseous. I was refunded my money and given a fresh burger which came out within minutes (strange), I did eat it as I was very hungry, but every bite I was worried I would be sick. I won't be going back anytime soon unfortunately, still feel sick thinking about it. Confused how to get chicken so wrong 🙈
