Used this restaurant before going to the Hipperdrome theater, that was a mistake there were plenty of other restaurants to chose from. The service was poor the food was a very low standard, however the pricing very high and confusing. Needless to say we won't be going back there again.

We had high hopes after reading such good reviews but were sadly disappointed. Expecting authentic, clean flavours from a restaurant in the heart of Chinatown, we were served up a meal of the usual 'Takeaway' quality. Had it not been swimming in dark soy sauce, the Char Siu pork would have been tasteless. The other main dish was almost as bland - Sichuan king prawns, which were fried in a gloopy sauce of sliced onion, strips of red and green peppers and sliced red chillies. Having asked what the 'mixed vegetables' conisted of, I was told by the waitress that she didn't know. She referred me to a colleague who managed "Some carrot and others....". So I opted for the Sichuan aubergine - sadly, just a veg cooked in the same gloopy sauce as the prawns. Given that this place has a lot of competition and the food was no better than in our local (only) Chinese restaurant (at a fraction of the price), we felt the meal was overpriced. For the dishes mentioned above plus one portion of egg fried rice and a bottle of water, we were charged £63.80

The best dim sum I have ever had and some wonderful authentic Cantonese dishes. Vast menu choice and lovely service. Can't wait to go back

Always amazing great food good prices enjoyable all round

Turned up as a family of four on a Saturday afternoon for eats after finding on Google. We were seated in the area that is a lean-to, but is comfortable and fitted with lights and heat. We thought it might be lovely sat here in a summer rain shower actually. Only detracting point is a couple of the mats on the floor could do with a good clean, but otherwise all the tables and chairs were clean and comfortable. Service was courteous while we were there. The area we were sat in wasn't empty, but not hugely busy - probably about a 35% occupancy in this area. On ordering we were asked if the starters should come at the same time as the dim sum, which they did. The menu is impressive!!! The Dim Sum selection is extensive, as is the main menu. Two of us had the "set meal for two or more", while two of us had dim sum and a main from the menu. Everything arrived piping hot and fresh cooked. And plenty of it! Both the set meal and individual selections were great. The food quality was superb. Highlights that we had were the spicy pork and chive dumplings, and the lamb with ginger and spring onion. Prices were about as expected: Meal for four coming in at about £130 (including drinks). This restaurant is only a few minutes walk from the main Birmingham New St station. Chinatown is across the road. Recommended. We would certainly go here again.

Plenty to choose from on the menu. Had some really tasty dim sum and a spicy crispy squid main course. Love the food here, some of the best Chinese food in Birmingham. The menu is huge, there is so much variety to choose from.

Best Chinese food I’ve eaten in as long as I can remember. Service was quick and efficient, portions were good and price was reasonable. We had the set menu for 2 and couldn’t fault a thing, flavours were excellent as was the quality of the ingredients. I wish this was in my doorstep.

A glorious experience. A treat for our son on his birthday. Attentive, kindly waiting staff, who explained the menu beautifully, delicious food (beyond tasty, fresh, fragrant and well presented), and to cap it all, two waiters surprised my little boy by singing Happy Birthday to him without warning, with cake and a candle. It was just all joyful, and we can't wait to return to try some other dishes.

This was our first visit and will not be our last. Opening at 11:00 means the restaurant is now open an hour earlier. It seemed busy enough to justify the earlier opening. We had a range of the dim sum and they were all excellent before 17:00 there is a discount so good value as well. Good service as well. We will be back.

Friendly atmosphere in the outdoor extension and great food. Menu is diverse with plenty of dishes. Portions were generous and staff reassured us of Halal options on offer.

Do not come here unless you like the tasye of ultra processed washing up l8quid poor quality food that has never even looked at any garlic or ginger. No flavour.

Had lunch here yesterday. Food was ok but not the best. The service was terrible, aside from it being slow and unaccommodating they were even unaware of your proper order. You also need to ask them about everything such as a sauce that should be offered when you ordered dimsums. We ordered around 6 dishes but when they served the first 3 we’ve been told that our orders were complete. We’ve been asked for drinks and told them what we wanted but it didn’t arrived until you follow it up in the middle of your meal. We were about to finish the first 3 dishes which only consisted of rice, congee and fried squid that’s when we only managed to get one of their staffs attention. They were too quick to get your finished dishes and serve your bill but other than that we experienced the opposite.

Absolutely wonderful food, service and atmosphere. We did book in advance and were seated immediately, our orders were taken quickly and drinks brought fast. All of our food was vegetarian and we were shocked at how quickly it came to our table and how hot and fresh it was - it was also the most delicious vegetarian food we have had and we were blown away by the experience. All servers went above and beyond, there was a lovely vibe throughout and a relaxed atmosphere and we felt everyone dining in seemed to be having an enjoyable evening and were being well looked after too. I couldn't fault it. Honestly it was just really lovely to see. It just has such a good vibe and the food is so good, we travelled for our wedding anniversary and will be back next time too, if not before!

Went for food this evening and my main complaint is there is soooo many options. Staff were friendly..atmosphere was lovely and chill this evening and my dish which was fried beef in satay sauce and egg fried rice was tasty

Came for a meal before a show. The service was amazing and the food was delicious! It is extremely well priced. When we come back to Birmingham we will be coming back to eat here!

Typical Chinese resteraunt, fast and furious. I shall return as the food was good.

Food was lovely, however it took an hour for our starter to be served after chasing it up twice. No apology. Main course came whilst still eating starter. Funnily the bill came very speedily and grabbed away from us when we didn't pay a service charge.

The decoration is nice and they had the Euros (football) playing on a projector. The "hot and sour soup" will be very unsatisfying to those who grew up with the authentic dish: it's not "hot" - the soul of the dish is black pepper and there is not enough; it's not "sour" - there is not enough vinegar, another core ingredient; it's not "soup" - there was too much starch, it had an uneven and gloopy texture. The bamboo shoot and beancurd in the dish is good quality though, so there's no problem with the ingredient sources. The staff, although friendly and having removed the dish from our bill - for which we are grateful - seemed uninterested in faithfully reproducing the dish from home: they explained they were just catering to British preferences. This is fair enough, but I believe they would be able to attract even more repeat customers by, for example, making it clear (e.g. in Chinese) when a dish is substantially modified, so that everyone can come home happy with their full stomach, no regrets, and understand what they are ordering. In order to improve the service and leave customers feeling better about their experience, I suggest Dale Carnegie's "How To Win Friends And Influence People"; the manager was friendly and polite, but the waiter who handled our case was a little defensive and upset when we made complaints about the hot and sour soup after we had eaten a moderate part of it. It was not that we wanted it to be refunded or redone - we just wanted to let you know our thoughts in case it could help you improve the dish - but I think the waiter received only the former impression and reacted sharply - while I understand their feelings in that moment, it is better for the customer experience to have staff listen to the end of the statement before responding. The crispy pork belly was alright - it is of the typical quality that can be found in a medium cost lunch in Hong Kong - the only order size on the menu is a little large.

Visited last night.Food was excellent!We were going to a show,and everything was served so that we arrived well fed. Staff very smart and helpful. We had a set menu,plenty for us to eat and we took some home. It was very busy,plus euros showing so a bit noisy,but that my hearing!

One of my favourite venues for Dim Sum.

The starter was a bit odd with a big lettuce and some rice n meat. The fried bits were a little underdone The mains were really good the sizzling beef was exceptional so it balance it out to average. Adding a service charge annoyed me

worst chinese ever. when they say you won’t get a better chinese than the dodgy looking place on the corner of the road it’s true. i was suspicious about ordering from an actual restaurant but i was right t be so the chips looked burnt and tasted uncooked. how do you pull that off? the egg fried rice was utterly bland and i know it’s not the most seasoned dish ever but it should have some sort of flavour, right? the curry sauce was the worst part though. it came in a tray with massive vegetable bits that i had to pick out and once i pulled that off, all i tasted was onion. this takeaway was atrocious and i can’t think of one good thing about it. never again chung ying

Amazing food, really amazing and funny manager or server (best I’ve ever seen), and incredible attention to detail for vegans by multiple staff members (who warned us multiple times that certain items we ordered weren’t vegan). A bit pricey but very worth it. Inside is much prettier than outside area imo. Got the vegan duck pancakes, spicy vegan dumplings, and vegan laziji spicy chicken.

I will never go to this restaurant again. Food was terrible. Duck pancakes - duck was so dry and tasteless. I also had chicken chow mein which was dry as bone with little chicken, no bean sprouts and a couple of pieces of onion. It was undoubtedly the worst chow mein I have ever tasted. My friends food was also tasteless.

Was recommended by a friend, didn't book just showed up around 5pm was seated in the outside bit where it was cozy such friendly staff had a good giggle with them ordered food and it was the best we had ever eaten will definitely be back as all reasonably priced as well.

Consistently good food. Service generally good, sometimes a bit slow at busy times but to be expected. Lovely atmosphere in the “extension” which is half in, half outside. Of note, an excellent gluten free menu with plenty of tasty options. Prices reasonable for the quality of food provided.

Wednesday at 12:30 going to the hippodrome for 2 pm and called in here 1st . We had set meal A which was very nicely cooked. Staff attentive, no long waits so got to theatre in plenty of time. didnt book but it was busy and i would therefore suggest booking if you want to go

Went for my mum's 70th and after a slight mix up with the dates that was totally my fault. They rallied around and fit us in. Not only that they looked after us so very well! We ordered a banquet and it was delicious! All of it ❤️ The singing voice of the staff should be a thing of pop idol and the smile on my mum's face was brilliant. Thanks guys... I wish I lived more local but next time I'm in Birmingham I will see you again. Thankyou.

A grand daddy of dim sum joints in the UK. Some 30 years ago when I was a student, it was the one and only place I went to for dim sum. In comparison to the many places in London, it is every bit as good and often better. Every time I'm driving through Birmingham, I make it a point to stop for dim sum. Long may Chung Ying continue to dish out good food!

I have eaten at Chung Ying (& Chung Ying Garden, when open) since the early 2000's. Whilst the food was reasonable tonight (11.04 24), the service was appalling & the worst experienced in the 20+ years I have visited this establishment. Online reviews suggest other nearby restaurants are far superior... it's a shame, but it's time to move on!

Very loud but service was quick. The staff were friendly and helpful and the food tasted decent.

Never disappointed with the food here. It's so satisfying. The dumplings are amazing. Service could be better, especially because they add service charge to the bill and we don't like to take it off unless the service is really bad. Cleanliness of the utensils could be better too.

The food is authentically Cantonese style Chinese. A lot of sweet flavours which is so familiar to my childhood. Would highly recommend. I had sui Mai, char sui boa and prawn spring rolls. Delicious and will definitely recommend.

Excellent meal here tonight after being to the theatre. We enjoyed set menu c for 3 people and had a lovely selection of dishes and plenty to eat. Quick, polite, friendly service and overall lovely meal out. Would definitely recommend and eat here again

This little restaurant is a five-minute walk from New Street, round the corner from the Hippodrome and the Glee Club - and in my case, spittin' distance from the Ibis hotel. I was staying there overnight for a show at the NEC, and I needed something substantial to eat before heading out there. I was recommended to check out Chung Ying to see if they had spare tables. There are a few steps up into the restaurant which might be an issue for patrons with limited mobility, but another review has stated that the staff do have a ramp that they can deploy when needed. Other than that, it's all ground floor with plenty of room between tables to move about. While I waited, I was handed a nice-quality menu to peruse while they sorted a spot out - there's a little waiting area with chairs. I was impressed with the range on offer but overall, it was an easy choice. I picked char siu pork with a side of fried rice - I don't often get to eat it at home and it's one of my favourite Chinese dishes. I also ordered a pot of green tea to wash it down. The food arrived after a short wait - generous portions and very fresh. The tea was delicious and the char siu was really flavourful, proper melt-in-your-mouth tenderness. While I don't have dietary requirements, there's an extensive vegan and gluten free selection which is great to see. The restaurant was pleasantly busy, there was a happy and relaxed ambience during my visit. There's some complaints about the decor being dated on TA but 1) it was clean and presentable, and 2) I'd rather the focus be on good food and service, and the staff were all well-dressed, attentive and friendly. I need to head back here to try the dim sum, it seems to be very popular!

We love a Chinese but we were blown away by the food here! A huge menu with lots of small plates as well the usual choices. We tried (and over ordered) the dim sum they were all so good! Next time we are in Birmingham for Hamilton we will definitely try the larger dishes as well.

Best Cantonese restaurant in China town! Foods always amazing and comes out quickly. Lots of veggie and vegan options which are clear on the menu. Staff always very friendly. ☺️

Authentic Cantonese restaurant. The dim sums are well made. They are comparable to the famous restaurants I visited in Guangzhou.

Been a few times over the years and super yet again for mothers day. There is a discount on dim sum too between 2 and 5 on Sundays.

Excellent attentive service, huge variety of food to choose from. All dishes very well presented and enjoyed. Welcoming comfortable atmosphere. Very happy to return and recommend.

Very disappointing experience today. Have visited many times before but the food today was poor. We ordered half crispy duck not only was portion size small but the duck was more crispy than actual duck. The lamb yuk sung was tasteless and greasy. The king prawn with cashew nuts was ok.

Have been here a number of times before and has been good Yesterday we ordered crispy duck, which was over cooked and the lamb yuk sung, which was absolutely tasteless. We tried adding soy sauce and salt to the latter to no effect l would have been embarrassed to cook and serve this to guests Needless to say I will not be returning any time soon

Traditional, friendly on the ball staff even when swamped with custom. I'm vegetarian and the vegan options I had available to me had me changing my mind every 2 seconds because I wanted it all. I settled on salt and chilli cashew tofu starter (originally wings but non available) and vegan shredded beef main. Portions are huge, managed to bring some home for the family to try who aren't vegan and they said it was literally the tastiest Chinese dish they has ever tried. My partner had ribs, chicken curry, prawn toast and Chicken and sweetcorn soup. Greedy pants ate the lot and loved every last bit. Stated the ribs melted in his mouth. Thanks for a lovely dinner experience. Booking is key for this place as we've always been turned away on walk in. Reservations are in demand and now I know why!!!

Friendly and attentive service. We came for a late Friday lunchtime dim sum. The selection on offer is vast and cooked to order. The items that we ordered were pretty decent compared to some places we've been to in Chinatown in London especially given the 20% discount offered every day on dim sum items between 12-5pm. I preferred the steamed options and the portion sizes were generous. Would recommend making a reservation for the weekends and evenings. I would come back again

This is the second time we visited, however we didn’t book a table in advance, it is just a school day weekday which suppose not full, we were served a table outside with 4 Degree Celsius tonight and kids, I asked if they have table inside, the guy said all booked!! After 1.5hrs, we finished dinner the tables inside still empty!!! And you can see they served the locals much better and much faster, we even didn’t have our tea after dishes all being served.

I’ve been coming here for 13 years now and my missus has been going even longer. Best Chinese in Birmingham and every visit is incredible.

Honestly the WORST experience I have had. I waited over an hour for special fried rice only to take away. I was told 25 minutes initially and the time just kept increasing and increasing. I kept asking and asking, and was told they have to prepare food for people seated ipstiars, people who came in way after me!!! Waiting with restless children in the evening who had not eaten just for a simple special fried rice which was brought out to tables who arrived after me is purely a joke! Honestly the worst experience! They waited until the rush had passed and the restaurant was closing before preparing my order. The food itself lacked flavour and that is what makes this whole experience hurt more! Honestly avoid for takeaways and from some of the recent reviews probably avoid for dine is also!!

Wonderful food, vast menu along with set menus, service to match, all the food arrived hot and at the right time and they were attentive all the way through the meal and dining was unhurried. We will be visiting again soon.

Another fabulous lunch at Chung Ying's our favourite Chinese restaurant. As ever the service was excellent with each dish to our liking. We always order far too much but then take home the food left over. A long lunch enjoyed with red wine and then an Uber home.
