Best Chinese food I’ve ever eaten will definitely be back

Seated in the outside 'lean to' area. We ordered starters and mains and sides. It was all delivered together so most of it went cold. Service was quite rude. There are better Chinese restaurants with better council hygiene ratings.

I had an awful experience at this restaurant. The customer service was poor. On top of that, the food had no taste at all. Definitely not worth the visit. I won’t be coming back.

The food was excellent as always but the service was appalling. We asked for bowls and spoons, and the waiter said why, we don't give that till the main course you don't need it now and stomped off. We asked for water several times, our drinks took ages to arrive. We ended up being there 3 hours as the food took so long to come. We asked for the bill 5 times and refused to pay the service charge which did not go down well. There are better places to eat Chinese food around there.

Working away this week. Amazing fast service and very welcoming staff, great music that wasn't just random hits and the food was amazing. A huge vegan selection too! Will be back again

As someone like me who enjoys authentic Chinese cuisine, this place did not reach my expectations. I tried Mapo Tofu, Sichuan beef, both specified on the menu to be spicy, turned out to be severely moderated. It was not spicy at all. If you are someone like me that like your authentic spicy taste, I won’t recommend it. If you prefer non spicy Chinese takeaway style, this’ll be perfect for you.

My business partner and I went for dinner last night. We had set meal B but switched the rice out which they were happy to accommodate. Staff were attentive, polite and helpful throughout. The food was delicious, it didn’t look as amazing as it tasted (hence no photos), but everything was fresh and flavoursome. My favourites were the chicken yuk sung, mixed dim sum and the sizzling beef. You’re always guaranteed high quality food and service at Chung Ying, I hope it stays in Brum forever!

Been to several meetings here this year and always greeted by friendly staff. Service and food is excellent and the prices for such large portions are very reasonable for the city centre. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending. Big thank you to William and his team!

Amazing food with wonderful polite service

For some reason, we haven't been here for a couple of years (probably because there are just so many great places to eat at in Birmingham these days). So, it was lovely to head back to Ching Ying Garden and attempt to eat our bodyweight in Dim Sum. I love that you order what you want on a sheet of paper, then sit back and wait for the dishes to arrive in whatever order the kitchen make them. The Dim Sum was the star of the show, loads of little dumplings still sat in their steaming baskets, alongside the steamed buns. Delicious. I was a bit disappointed in the triple Roast Meats, however, I've definitely had both better and bigger portions in Chinatown. But still perfectly serviceable. Overall, a very enjoyable meal out, we'll try not to leave it another two years before we go back!

Reliable Cantonese restaurant with large choice of dishes. Nothing exceptional but nothing poor either. We enjoyed the duck on crispy noodles and squid dishes but the dim sum were a little heavy. We hadn't booked but didn't have to wait long on a Friday night to get seated and the service was prompt.

I really enjoyed my visit here. Food was good BUT it could have been cooked better considering how expensive it is, chips are very very average and the salt and chilli chicken was slightly burnt. But I’d go again! Service was really good but please make sure glasses and cutlery are cleaned properly for good hygiene, and please make sure food is cooked well and worth the money despite how busy it may get.

Attended for a friend’s birthday celebration. Food was tasty and service was on the whole good, although the vegetarian food came out some time after everyone else’s which wasn’t ideal. Portion sizes are quite average and the vegetarian option was a bit dull (and full of mushrooms). We had the set menu which came out on large sharing platters. It was £30 per head including the service charge which is ok I suppose for central Birmingham but I was expecting a bit more wow factor given the reviews and location. It was nice tasty food but I’m not sure if we would revisit.

Really great meal all round. They have a gluten free menu with lots of options and a vegan menu with lots to choose from too.

Had a pre theatre dinner here for the first time. I have to say the food was superb. The staff very friendly and attentive. I would definitely come here again. Great food and service!

I came with my friend 4 days ago I ordered sweet & sour pork with two portions of egg fry rice and a glass of tap water was really nice caught the train from coventry to try out this restaurant and to make a day of it

I was very unwell after the meal. Whilst I do not want to write a bad review, I think this place needs to make customers very aware that the food is coated in MSG. Really wish this was disclosed at the outset for those of us with a sensitivity. By the time I'd consumed half the meal it was too late. Later found out that they use a very low quality oil (hydrogenated) as well. Whilst this will not make everyone ill, the food is unsafe for some.

Very good service from Enci & Engkoh there, delicious food at the right price. We bought pineapple fried rice + wontons, because the portion was quite big we asked for take away which was immediately given a box + spoon + chili sauce + plastic bag. Enci there did everything in a friendly manner...🙏😊 When I arrived the toilet door was broken, hopefully it has been repaired...

Great spot for meeting friends; we were a group that meet up monthly and travelled from Solihull, Leicester, Worcester, and Birmingham, so this is a great meeting place for us. We all have different dietary requirements, and they are all catered for really well! Especially the gluten-free menu; I am coeliac, and this is the best GF menu I have seen with so much choice. I will definitely recommend it and will be back.

Chinese fried rice noodles and dim sum!

Been here a few times, the food is great. Service can be a bit rushed. But I guess that’s because it’s popular. Go there for a birthday meal if you want to embarrass whoever’s birthday it is 😂

Had a really nice meal last night at Chung Ying. I have to say, the food was really really impressive. The restaurant itself is nostalgic, its old school dining take took me back to my childhood. The food: my favourite dish was the Wafer Wrapped King Prawns, these were absolutely moreish, the wafer literally melts in the mouth and juicy prawn was incredible. This is my new favourite dish on the menu. The paper wrapped spare ribs were also very good. I'm quite fussy with meat quality and found these to be the best ribs I've had in a while. Our vermicelli Singapore style noodles packed a punch as well. Other members of our group complimented the king prawn green pepper and black bean sizzle plate dish a lot too. The staff were kind and funny and kept the table entertained. I look forward to my next visit to try more of the menu, next time I will be asking the restaurant direct to give me their recommendations!!

RIP off Britain. 20 pounds for a curry ordinary and then snap on a 5 pound service service. It's the chinese quarter Birmingham ..... extravaganza.

Had to wait ages for food. Yes it was busy but for 2 plates of chicken and ribs seriously. Here's me picking off the chillis. A bit too many methinks. Waited ages for 2 plates of rice. Then I nearly fainted at the bill. A glass of orange and 2 beers as well. £78 is beyond a joke. Please justify this cause I can't

Went to Chung Ying for lunch today and it was perfection in every way - The attention to detail on the food and service are second to none (we were served by Raymond who was great!) It’s by far the best Cantonese restaurant in the city & will return time and time again.

We went and checked out the food, it was awful, overpriced and not worth it, staff seemed to have an attitude when taking orders, asked for steam rice delivered the wrong food. Never coming back, the maccies after was better then that.

Lovely evening spent with my friend Rome. Food choice was good like the platter for two. Lamb and sweet n sour chicken was the best.

Great experience last night at Chung Ying. The food was perfect & the service was excellent (the staff were so good with my niece & nephew especially. They were very impressed by “the lollipop man”). I personally loved the extensive vegan menu. The spicy veg dumplings & vegan duck pancakes were my favourites, but pretty much every dish was worth praising. Portion sizes very generous too. Will absolutely be returning in future.

I used to dine here many years ago when I was a meat eater, so was delighted to find they have a Vegan menu. I dined with vegan and non vegan friends, and we all enjoyed the various dishes. I can recommend the set menus . Service was great and I'm looking forward to returning soon.

Don’t bother with dim sum here - go to Ken Ho or Ivy lounge. At least service is better there. Even though they have the “20% off” dim sum they claw this back with charging £20(!!!) Tea prices for 7 adults. Even more expensive than London dim sum. The 20% we “saved” was £26 but having paid £17 for service and £20 for tea, was stupid. Charged 10% for service which was non existent. The waiters were busy hanging around the till just chatting whereas a poor lady was the only one working hard clearing tables. No one was clearing empty plates as we finished them, had to ask them to make room for more food. Had to wait ages to ask someone to refill the tea pot. The boss was having lunch on the table next to ours and that table wasn’t even cleared for a good 30 mins after he left even though the waiters were free.

The food here is absolutely lovely and full of flavor, with a great selection for vegetarians, vegans, and non-vegetarian options alike. We’ve visited twice. During our first visit, the restaurant was extremely busy, and unfortunately, the staff were quite rude. Despite there being empty tables, we had to wait 30 minutes for a seat. However, the food itself was excellent, which somewhat made up for the experience. On our second visit, the atmosphere was completely different. The owner was present, and he was incredibly welcoming and attentive, which made us feel valued as customers. It was also less busy, which likely contributed to a better experience. My only recommendation would be for the owner to ensure the staff consistently provide good customer service, even during busy times. The food is fantastic, but the service needs improvement to match the quality of the meals.

Delicious food and a nice atmosphere! Younger male waiter was pleasant old ones were a bit grumpy - a smile costs nothing! Overall definitely a good place to eat!

Not even mediocre dim sum… small portion, overly salty and bland tea. Each dim sum dish is approximately 7-9£. they do offer 20% off between 10am to 5pm for weekday dim sum tho. We ordered 8 dim sum and two noodle dishes and ended up with 90 pounds bill after discount.

Literally not a bad dish on the menu!! Even the chips are delicious. 20% of Dimsum between 12pm and 5pm makes it even more reasonable. Staff are very friendly. There is covered, heated, outside seating as well as ample inside seating.

The food was incredible! I lived in China for 1.5 years and the food really reminded me of the food I had there. They have a massive vegan menu, literally way too many options to choose from. Cannot recommend it enough for vegans. Will definitely be coming back!

Missing a few things on the menu (no duck?!) but the food was nice. Would have been nice to see the inside dining area but outside area is comfortable enough.

Great restaurant, been here a few times and it is consistently high quality food, friendly quick servers, and very generous portions on the set menu.

Had a really good meal with my team. We chose the deluxe set meal with a couple of extra dishes. All the starters and mains were delicious including Thai style chicken wings, crispy duck, spicy beef and many other high quality dishes including some amazing crispy pork belly accompanied by rice etc. Service was quick and attentive. On the pricey side but worth it for the quality.

The Dr Finlay’s Private Practice team have had TWO Christmas team Meals at Chung Ying this year and both were excellent. Especially as some of our team are gluten free! William Wong and the team looked after us and the food and atmosphere are excellent!!

Never got to try the food of the atmosphere but I did experience the rude waiter. Waiting my turn he pushed me out side then denied I’d been waiting over 30 minutes also pushed people away who had a booking.Miss lead several groups of waiting people saying they had free tables. Might give it another go but book next time.

This was my first time coming for dim sum. Although we had to sit outside, the heater was on full blast, so it was quite warm. The dim sum was okay, though the turnip cake was a bit too soft. Initially, I thought I’d come back next time. But something happened when we paid the bill that really bothered me, so I probably won’t come again. When we were paying, the female server asked if we had any cash. I told her I didn’t, and the nearby ATM was broken, so I couldn’t withdraw any money. I then asked her if they didn’t accept cards, and she replied that they preferred to take cash. So I asked her if that meant no 20% off (dim sum is currently 20% off daily from 11 am to 5 pm). She reluctantly said yes. I told her I really didn’t have any cash, and then she actually said, “Well, next time remember to bring some!” HA-HA! I’m sure she wouldn’t have said that if I were white. No next time. Goodbye!

I was in Birmingham on Sunday and decided to visit the Chung Ying restaurant. I have visited many, many Chinese restaurant all over the world and throughout the UK. The meal I had here was exceptionally good! I had a selection of Dim Sum as my starter and some Young Chow fried rice with some Belly Pork and picked cabbage. Wow! What excellent Chinese flavours. I would certainly recommend this restaurant if you want authentic Cantonese Chinese food.

Visited Chung Ying on a few occasions and it never lets you down. The staff add a family feel to it and always make you feel welcome. Steamed dumplings are a personal favourite.

Food is a bit pricey, but it is so good. I guarantee it's worth it. No regrets. I have been here 4 times now, and honestly, it's becoming my favourite asian spot in town

Not good when busy. Just look at the custard buns we got in the picture below. This was compared to the table we were sitting next to who got liquid custard just because they were recording their experience… the portion size was also smaller than usual because it was busy. Will not come again when it is so busy. Plus they put so much red food dye in the char siu I thought the pork was alive and bleeding still😅

A welcomed return after many years! So much has changed. Now, book in at outdoor extension. Due to this, staff seem off putting and dismissive.

Wow! Went for the dim sum and was absolutely delighted with everything we ate. I am still thinking about the ribs and wondering how something can be so delectable. Excellent waiter, very funny and sweet. Will be back to try main menu items.

Good to see 6 or 7 vegan main options - the more plant-based options the better, so please introduce more sweet and savoury vegan dishes. The seating area was quite open and loud... Would benefit from some quiet corners for people to sit and relax.

I ordered crab meat from this restaurant about a year ago, and I’m still dealing with the consequences. After eating their food, I was sick for 13 days, with constant vomiting and diarrhea that left me unable to leave the toilet. My gut was so severely damaged that I had to be hospitalized and undergo a colonoscopy. As a result of this food poisoning, I developed IBS, which I’m still struggling with to this day. This experience has completely changed my life, and my gut has never been the same. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Algunos de nosotros obtuvimos el menú A; algunos lo serán. Creo que los menús establecidos son una buena relación calidad-precio en general, pero el compromiso no es necesariamente disfrutar de cada plato servido. Los camareros que sirvieron a nuestra mesa eran muy buenos y muy agradables, pero algunos de los miembros del personal de la casa eran asquerosos y antipáticos. Food was nice but felt quite overpriced considering it just tasted like a good takeaway. The waiters that served our table were very good and really nice but some of the front of house staff were gruff and unfriendly. Lots of families with young children inside which is lovely to see but got a little loud at times (no fault of the restaurant here). They accommodated my brother’s nut allergy which was great.

Authentic and brilliant, very full menu, but the staff will help, the food is excellent and I can't wait to return. Do make a booking it gets very busy very quickly from six pm onwards

Food filled a hile but it wasn't that tasty. Had dim sum and the prawns where over cooked. Asked for soy sauce and chili oil it never arrived.

La comida era deliciosa y nuestro servidor era brillante. Cantó feliz cumpleaños tan fuerte y profesional que todo el restaurante se detuvo a escuchar y animar, lo que me hizo el día de los 14 años! Es el esfuerzo adicional al que la gente va lo que hace que la experiencia sea genial.

Good food. Service OK but your just a number.

Visitó a finales de septiembre mientras estaba fuera con el trabajo. Realmente ocupado viernes por la noche y el restaurante estaba lleno, pero el personal logró apretarme. Dim Dum era excelente, sin duda visitar de nuevo!

Honestly fantastic quality food for fairly reasonable prices. It's worth noting that it's cheaper to dine in than it is to get delivery!
