Chives in Havant

Left Hayling Island 8 years ago but returned today for a walk down memory lane and it lead me to Mike's Kitchen. Wonderful people, perfect food and beautiful crockery at a very reasonable price. I forgot to mention the location is great and the choice of seating areas are outstanding.

We popped in for a brunch. Great menu. Food was nice and hot and plentiful. Very enjoyable. The lady who served us was very professional and friendly.

came here for a birthday breakfast and was greeted with such kindness by both owners on my birthday it was lovely, the food was delightful and fresh to order. the iced coffee was beautiful especially in this hot weather, very refreshing. highly suggest coming back for a breakfast or to try and evening meal.

Just popped in for quick beer to avoid high winds , Got talking to Mike and his staff . Very friendly guy and the place looks immaculate. Promised to bring Mike couple steaks down next week

Wow! Amazing food. Mike (owner and chef) certainly has a talent for creating delicious food! Very reasonable prices and bonus of the restaurant being very dog friendly (Mike gave our dog lots of treats!). We were on holiday for a week in Hayling Island and popped in to Mike's Kitchen for tea and cake earlier in the day. Such a lovely cafe / resturant that we went back in the evening for dinner. We would have gone back again but unfortunately it was closed mid-week. We have booked another holiday next year, so will definitely return!

We dropped in for brunch last Saturday. The young lady who served us was very obliging and we were served quickly. The food was hot and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We were pleased to see a high level of custom coming through the door whilst we were there and whilst we were not served by the owner ourselves, noticed how she integrated with two children and their father, listing a whole array of soft drinks available. Will certainly be returning.

Came here with my nana and my 18month old for some brunch and there was no highchairs. The lady who I believes owns the place was very unwelcoming and made us feel like we weren’t supposed to be there especially with my child. It’s quite clear and obvious that people with young kids aren’t welcome. My 18 month old wasn’t causing any issue or being disruptive however it was clear they’d prefer we weren’t there. I’ll be sure to avoid next time.

We have been several times now and the food is fantastic. Had Frito Misto of S&P Squid, cooked Prawns and Calamari, mixed Marinated Oliver as starters, pan Fried Sea Bass, Tuna Steak Provencal, Moroccan Spiced Roast Butternut Squash as mains The staff are freindly and attentive. Will certainly go again and again and....

Absolutely fantastic evening meal only been during day usually once a week at dinner time .but found myself there Ona Friday night brilliant food .

Somehow or other we find ourselves opening the door and trotting in to Mike's Kitchen every week now . The food is consistently of excellent quality piping hot and just a delight. Service is brilliant, you are made to feel at home and welcome . So deserve an excellent review. Just a great experience .

As ever we were given a warm welcome with a wide range of delicious food and drinks. A beautiful evening on Hayling Island meant we were able to enjoy pre-dinner drinks outside prior to dining. We were given personal attention by the proprietors and had a very enjoyable evening. Super atmosphere and excellent food. Highly recommend.

Lovely breakfast and service from the team at Mikes! Accommodated a small portion for our son and the breakfast is one of the best we’ve had! Fresh ingredients, fantastic sausages and not greasy at all! Well worth a visit !

We’ve been working on the island for last 3 months and visit mikes couple of times a week!! Food and service is always excellent, Mike is a top guy and good chef, his wife looks after us every visit, would highly recommend!

The staff were so lovely to us as soon as we walked in, And the most important part the food, the Breakfast was great we loved it really happy we came here definitely coming back next time we’re in the island, we was a family of 4 to young boys who are really difficult but they looked after them Please say a big thank you to all the staff and the chef for one of the best Breakfast I’ve had on the island them sausages wow lovely Thank you guys

We ate here for lunch. The food was excellent and the service friendly and quick. An observation (not a critisism) is that the menu is limited for lighter lunch and for eaters with dietary requirements - there was very little that was gluton-free.

A friend kindly gave a me a voucher for a belated birthday present as she knows how much I enjoy the food that Mike the owner cooks and Tania is wife serves!

Good food, good service, good price. Ticks all the boxes. Go in, sit down, someone comes to take your order. Not eating eggs I always ask if I can change them, no bother. I got a good sized portion of well cooked food, in fact I did actually leave a bit of sausage (I got an extra one in place of my egg).

Now called Miles Kitchen. We visited this bistro for our Valentines night. We had a pre set meal for two for the occasion. The food was hot and beautifully cooked and lots of it. Real value for money. The staff are very cheerful and polite and I recommend you give this place a try. It has a nice atmosphere it’s easy to find and good weather you are going for lunch or dinner

knowing Mike I was dying to try the menu now he has taken over chives, now called Mikes, our party had the fish pie which was excellent, three people had it, it was massive and everyone raved over it, two people had the pheasant, although one said it was a bit over cooked they loved it, two of us had the rib eye steak, the whole meal was great but the steak was slightly overcooked but I know how difficult it is to judge, our only criticism was the atmosphere, the music was drab and it wasn't exactly warm, but we will return, looking forward to trying the pork meal.

I have been going to Chives for a long time, they go out of their way to make my daughter and grandaughter who is 4 months old comfortable they have moved tables etc, they will even make small meals if asked. The staff are very friendly and nothing is too much trouble. They even made a friend of mine a special small meal which wasnt on the nenu one evening as they knew she wouldn't be able to eat the large evening meal which are absolutely delicious. I can't recommend them highly enough they are brilliant.

I had the most horrendous experience at Mikes today. I had never been before and was visiting a friend on the island and went for lunch. Mikes is definitely not family friendly. My friend and I both had our 4 month old babies with us, after our lunch arrived my little boy started getting a little restless and cried as babies do. The waitress came over and awkwardly recommended that I take my baby into the garden and put him in his pram to see if I could settle him. I was really offended and we both felt so awkward that had no choice but to leave. I definitely will not be going back and will be telling others about what an unwelcoming cafe it is.

Went to chives tonight ,wow what great food at great prices,this place has got to be tried, chives had changed hands ,and its new owners mike and Tonya great fun. Its now mikes kitchen at chives ,10++++ rating ,see you next WK chives x

I popped in here for a cup of tea whilst I was waiting for a friend. The welcome was warm, I asked for a strong pot of tea with soya....what an absolute joy to get exactly what I wanted 'no fuss or feathers'. My pot of tea had two tea bags (no extra charge). My friend arrived two minutes later and without hesitation her espresso appeared on the table.

Visited Chives with my family for brunch. Food was excellent, delivered quickly & with a smile! Lovely to sit in the little courtyard in the summer sun.

We had a lovely lunch at this cafe. The food was delicious and plentiful and made with fresh, quality ingredients. The staff were friendly and couldn’t do enough to ensure that we were happy. Quick, efficient service and highly recommended to all age groups

I had the most lovely breakfast here this morning - my Mexican avocado was both different and extremely tasty. The sourdough bread is fantastic.

A friendly place to eat. We went at lunchtime and the food was good, and reasonably priced. There is seating on the pavement outside if you prefer.

Lovely fresh home cooked food with very friendly staff. We use this place a lot and always enjoy whatever food we do get. Highly recommended.

Local facebook said how good the new owners Tania and Mike had relaunched a special Sunday brunch menu which was cooked and served between 10-2 pm. The menu was exciting and different to other cafes on Hayling especially the one I tried. Excellent all served with a filter coffee and plenty of choice of papers to read. A lovely way to spend and hour or so when the chores are completed.

Couldn't fault the cooked breakfast. It was cooked perfectly and all very tasty. Also friendly service. Highly recomend.

We came here for breakfast at the end of our holiday in Hayling. Really nice food, so reasonably priced and friendly service too. We will return if we are in the area again.

Good value for money. Nothing over the top or fancy just fresh easy lunch. I had a tuna sandwhich which was fresh, salad was tasty so couldnt fault it. The only thing I would say is turn the radio down! It would be better if it had soft quiet background music otherwise it currently has the atmosphere of a cheap cafe.

No idea ! Waited 40 mins for a pannini 2 guys on lunch break waited 20 mins for a machine coffee and the 2 young ladies next to us asked for there money back and walked out after waiting 40 mins for a sandwich - wont bother again, useless !

This is one not to be missed! It's a lovely little café with a very good breakfast menu. Go for the Big 7 if you can, it's sets you up for the day (I like to add black pudding for and extra £1) but you can have one of the usual suspects on toast if you have a smaller appetite. I take family here when they come and visit and they're always impressed. The staff are lovely and are very polite, so it's an all round winner.

Went for lunch with 3 others, the menu was typical for a place like this, the food is honest & varied as you would hope for. Staff are cheerful & friendly, they have good seating inside as well as outside for times of good weather. tough as usual this can be spoiled with smokers who could be on the table right next to you, but this is a general problem for all establishments. I'm a local so I will return as it offers exactly what you would expect.

This is a lovely little café! We called in for lunch after a morning at the beach. I had scampi and chips which was incredible - the scampi were lovely and soft inside and the batter was crispy, the chips were nice and chunky and the salad had a lovely dressing. My partner had a jacket potato which was a decent size and had lots of filling. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful too!

Had a handcrafted burger, bloody ansom! Some guy commented on a curry he'd had while I was eating so I'll come back another time for that. Lady who served was happy and lady who cooked seemed happy too. That happiness showed in the food and service! More expensive than McShyte but a million times better! Well done ladies!

Called in for lunch. The food was good - we had the specials (moules) but let down by disorganised front of house. You need to go to the counter to order. We were told after sitting at a table for 15 minutes. Premium pricing.

Called in with a couple of friends and was very disappointed to see that the menu had changed and we could no longer have a Sunday lunch, I ordered the chilli which was ok but not worth the price my friends lunches didn't look very interesting either..... I know that a few friends have stopped going in as the lunches are no longer available and the choice is very limited. The atmosphere seems to have changed as well.

called in yesterday afternoon it was quite late so I didn't really think my friends and I could get Sunday lunch but they went out of their way to cook three lunches and the lunch was delicious, the beef was so tender and there was enough for any appetite.My friends wanted slightly different from what was on the menu and they were very happy to oblige.very impressed

Went for breakfast this morning at 10.15 am. Fairly busy but not all tables taken. Went to order and asked for scrambled egg on my breakfast (I am pregnant therefore unable to eat runny eggs) was told they couldn't do me scrambled egg as they were too busy (scrambled eggs are also on the menu so it is not like I am asking for something they cannot do) now sat in madhatters who are happy to oblige regardless of how many customers they have!!! Support the local business but will not be going back. If they don't want my money or custom plenty of others do.

Called in here today and ordered fish and chips and a cup of tea. Good service, really clean and the food was served really quickly. The staff were cheerful and polite and prices keen. If your going by call in and give it a try I am sure that you won't be disappointed.

stopped here for lunch with my mum. First visit. I was very impressed with the menu as it had more than other menus catering for vegetarians. The seating inside is spacious. It is very clean and bright. Very lovely lady served us. We both opted for jacket potatoes which comes with side salad which was fresh and the meal was perfectly done. Came across this place while looking for the bank on Hayling Island. Went in for lunch. Staff very helpful. My daughter didn't want what was on the menu, so the chef was happy to accommodate her requirement.We will definitely go back again soon.

Recent spent a weekend in Hayling Island and walked into Mengham, which was not far from our accommodation. Chives is situated in a one way area of the main road through the village and has seating outside as well as in. It is a licensed Cafe, and has a good selection of sandwiches/jacket potatoes/Ploughmans lunches and main meals. Which several people were enjoying. The young man serving was very pleasant and I ordered coffee and my husband had a toasted teacake and tea. Seating was comfortable, and overall the whole place was clean and welcoming. It was very popular as tables were occupied as soon as they became available. This is a small establishment but worth a visit if you are in the area.

Street Cafe in Mengham with outside and inside tables. Friendly staff and efficient service. Visited twice in 2 days, different staff as it was bank holiday, once for cream tea and the second day for a late breakfast. Both days, good food as a good price.

Visit often with friends, lovely place to eat and the staff are really friendly! Food is always lovely, good value for money.

I absolutely adore this cafe, the staff are so friendly and always there to help, they have the best coffee on the island!!Me and my son often eat here and to be honest won't go anywhere else it's not just my favourite place to eat it's his aswell.

Visiting the island with friends on the island so we chose chives after recommendations from people and didn't regret it, was a delicious breakfast had by all and brilliant service from the young man serving us. Couldnt fault a thing and will definitely return. Lovely seating area in the sun too, great time had be all and a big well done to the staff :)

Visited with friends on Valentine's day just for coffee, nice comfortable chairs served by a really pleasant lady. What more do you require. Will visit every time we go to Hayling Island.

My wife and I have changed to having our midday drinks &/or food at Chives as it appears to be under new ownership from the last time we went in there when it wasn't so good. However, now their hot/cold drinks and the standard of food out of their kitchen has improved enormously and is scrumptious!! We gladly recommend a visit here.

If its beige watery boiling hot milk in a mug with a dirty spoon, advertise it as such, not as a latte!

I visited this cafe with my mum and my sister. My mum had a jacket potato cooked to perfection, she was happy (that was the main thing!!!) The service was very good and the staff were courteous. The food was of a very high standard, compliments to the chef. My sister and I had a cream tea, the scones were delicious. Thank you Chives for the experience

I've been using this cafe for several years with a regular group of friends and we have all agreed that it has gone downhill. The quality of the food is not what it was, the food presentation is poor and consequently it is not always the value for money that it used to be.A cold sandwich should be cut tidily in triangles and placed on a COLD plate with a nicely arranged salad garnish, not cut roughly across in two and hurled onto a hot plate as has happened to me on several occasions this year. The sandwich bread isn't always fresh either - no excuse for this with a supermarket opposite and an artisan bakers a few doors down.On my last visit, with my friends, one of them had to complain about the lack of filling in a panini - a few bits of grated processed cheese - not real mozzarella as advertised, two slices of tomato and the merest lick of pesto. I saw it for myself and it was totally unacceptable - at ANY price! This won't do Chives, there are better places to go on the Island, some only yards away.On that occasion, I had soup, I had to send it back because it was cold. It came back hotter but almost unbearably salty. As the quality has declined, the prices seem to rise every month or two and it cannot be justified.For the time being we are taking our custom elsewhere.(FYI - this report is an overview of several visits I have personally made with friends during 2014, rather than one specific visit. The most recent visit was in March 2014. I am comparing to many other more satisfactory visits since 2009)

Have visited this cafe on various occasions and at different times of the day. Perfect to pop in for a quick coffee or for a lunchtime snack. Friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere, good wholesome food, although sometimes busy (always a good sign) worth the wait! Would recommend if visiting Hayling..

I have found this a very child friendly place and the food is lovely, we have sat both inside and outside, we have never felt hurried or rushed and the staff has always been very friendly and helpful.

During our trip to Hayling Island, we had great lunch at Chives. The place was quite busy at lunch time. We had gammon steak, scampi and chips and their afternoon cream tea. Good food, good service. Highly recommended.

Always clean and tidy even when busy.The service is fast and whatever you order is of good quality.Admittedly the prices have risen recently but with Chives it really is a case of you get what you pay for.

Having looked at the menu outside of the Chichester Chives restaurant I was quite looking forward to enjoying the cottage pie with vegetables with a choice of either salad or chips.....I chose cottage pie with chips which duly arrived but without any veg. I asked the waitress where my veg was and she replied you can have either chips or veg. I showed her the menu which clearly states cottage pie with veg and she went off to speak with the manageress. She came back and said we can do you veg for 80p if you want ( less than their normal price) I said no the veg is in the price of the meal. Eventually she said i could have the veg for free but next time I will be charged.....sorry there will not be a next time. The menu, which can be viewed on line, clearly shows cottage pie with veg.

Always seems to be open and have to say that I've always had good food. Service is friendly and I would give 5/5 if it wasn't for that wincing moment when your told the bill

Another grey Bank Holiday Monday made so much brighter by an excellent breakfast. Friendly staff, nothing was too much bother, a wonderful full English breakfast, first class service and absolutely value for money. Restaurant is clean, there's a good choice of meals on the menu and they're open when others are not on Sundays. If the weather's good you can eat outside too. We're definitely going to be regular visitors from now on. Do give it a try, well worth it.

We meet here every week for a snack lunch - homemade soup/sandwich (pricey at £5 but exceptional quality)/cream tea/ toasted tea cake / baked potato all delicious!!!!Service is excellent - always friendly and very helpful and informative.P.S. I chose Chives for my retirement meal.

Chives is a friendly, excellent value for money cafe in this seaside resort. The staff are helpful and courteous ((Sam always takes a genuine interest if you've got a moment to chat ;-) ). It is family friendly with plently seating outside in the sun on a good day. Breakfasts are excellent value and top quality (including the vegatarian one) and there is plenty choice for veggies and children. You can have a large meal or just a snack or drink, but will always be greeted with the same warm welcome. I highly recommend you give it a try!

We often come to chives for a bite to eat and we are never dissatisfied and always treated very well and made to feel very welcome. The food is always good quality and promptly served. All the staff are very polite and it is truly a pleasure to visit, keepup the good work!!

Staff are very friendly, they have a wide range of tasty options on the menu. They're fully licensed. The old chef was fantastic, new chef needs a bit of practise with omelettes but other than that very good. Nice spacious room too eat in and when warm there are seats outside.
