Google stated it was open but on driving there from our campsite found it was closed and the main window was boarded up

We ordered 2x fish and chips a pattie and a carton of curry sauce...the chips were ok..the fish not so good..batter was soggy inside and was a strange colour as if it had been fried in very old oil and it wasn't nice..l think the fish had been refried....the patty was also soggy and didn't taste good..and the curry sauce was very watery..I don't know if this business has changed ownership but we had them from there a while ago and it was very good..as this cost £20 all I can say we were very disappointed...we won't be calling in again! I recommend Sullivans or Lilleys...far far better!!!

Lovely fish and decent chips. Can sit outside on clean tables or take into hallgate park on opposite side of road. Can park outside on road for 1 hour

Just bought a large bag of chips from here and to say we were disappointed in the portion size is an understatement. The chips were really skinny and small too.

Let's get straight in to it simply the best fish and chips I have ever had crispy batter ont fish the cod itself was very fresh tasty good size as well chips were plentiful fluffy and tasty and finally the peas very green and obviously homemade we had a regular cod and chips cost a tenner well worth it 👌

My hubby votes this the best chippy In Hornsea. I’m saying this is his review as he’s a chip shop snob so it’s stiff competition but the fish is fabulous and the chips perfect 👌🏼 as a family we vote it no 1

Popped into this fish and chips shop yesterday as spare of moment due to been hungry and smelt so lush as passed wasn't disappointed was really yummy 😋🤤 definitely go to again

Had fish and chips last night and scampi and chips tonight. Both meals were delicious. Fish and scampi were crispy, chips were soft. Staff were soooo friendly and food not over priced. Highly recommended.

I had a fish fritter with chips Thursday evening. Omg, the fritter was amazing, thick, well seasoned and plenty of fish inside. It was probably the best fritter I've had yet from a chippy. Would well recommend!

My husband and I had beautiful tasty chips at lunchtime on Saturday 2nd September from this chippy whilst visiting Hornsea on holiday. They were absolutely gorgeous so decided to drive there again for a teatime treat on Wednesday. They open at 4.30pm so took our dogs for a walk in the park opposite to kill time. There’s always a danger that when you are one of the first to be served after opening that it won’t be freshly cooked and be warmed up from lunchtime. I was right…! The chips were hard and the fish was greasy and horrible. What a waste of money (£17 for 2 x fish and chips), time and diesel to travel 20 miles there and back from our cottage where we were staying for such an unenjoyable meal. I wouldn’t walk to the end of my street for that! Was it someone else doing the frying on Saturday lunchtime? Sadly I will never know but I really wish I hadn’t bothered but it has definitely taught me not to go to a chippy until they’ve been open for at least a couple of hours..

Can recommend the home made pies. They were lovely. First time we've been to Chip n Gail's and we'll definitely come back. Debs 🙂

We've visited hornsea many times over the years and have always seen chip n gails on the way down to the hub car park. This time we thought we would try it due to the countless good reviews, but we're left feeling more than a little disappointed. Chips - they were a mix of beige slush and dark brown over fried crisps. None of which tasted great. Fish - Top batter was okay, the underside was soggy and the fish tasted odd. Battered sausage - they were the only good thing we had that evening (hence the two star review). I don't know if it was just the night we ordered or the batch of potatoes they'd had in, or the fish that was fried straight from the freezer, but it was really not worth the £30+ we spent including drinks. Service was good though, everyone was pleasant, and it seems like a loved local take away. Perhaps another time it would have been different?

Called in here last week (June 2023) on a day out to hornsea with a friend , we bought fish chips and mushy peas. Pleasant staff , efficient service and I have to say it , the best fish n chips I've ever had . The fish was amazing. Tasted very fresh. Will definitely call again thankyou

What a find. Quite honestly the best Fish and Chips in Hornsea by a mile. We only called in because Sullivan's was closed. We loved them and often make the 25 mile trip from Filey to to have their gorgeous F & C,s. Well worth the journey EDIT: The best Chippie on the Yorkshire Coast.

not tried this chippy for a while, and it will be another even longer while before i go back. wanted a special i/e large which they didn't do, so settled for 2 fish and a bag of chips. most chippies now cook to order, unfortunately not here, i got two from the pan. they had obviously been the a little too long as the base of the batter simply stuck to the wrapping, the rest was very chewy, so i left it, then horror of horrors, my wife got a bone....sloppy work and no excuse i am afraid, she stopped eating there and then. i have to say though, that the fish i got was very nice....once out of the batter. work needed.

Bought 4 fish and chips, 2 were edible but the fish was dry,,,the other 2 were so hard and burnt thay went straight into the bin,,,worst fish I have ever tasted ,,,,,

What a gem of a chip shop. Only found it recently as not a hornsea resident, just frequent visitor. The best fish and chips we've had in a long time. Good value and quality. Faultless. Will definitely be returning, just wish I lived closer now!!

The chips had an extremely weird after taste, it wasn’t just me who noticed, my son had about 3 and my partner couldn’t finish hers either, waste of £15

Once I moved to the area part time, this was the first chippy I went to. It's incredible. The staff are not only fast and kind, they are funny and really chatty. Even when COVID restrictions were in, they made it safe and fun. Food is so good, always hot, can't recommend enough.

We have been before and liked itbut don't know if it is a different cook or new owners but tonight the meal was very poor. The fish cakes were small over cooked and inedible the chips the same and the kids meal was also poor. Will not be returning

I have to say hand on hart this place served me the worst fish and chips I’ve had in Hornsea. Price was £12 + some pence so not cheap at all , and fish was only a regular in the order. So disappointed is an understatement. Never again will I ever go there. Absolute rip-off Quality zero. I couldn’t look customers in the eyes if I was serving that at that price.

Chips were greasy. Fish over done. Batter soggy. Forgot scraps. Very nice and friendly staff. Excellent sized sachets of sauce. I'm from and live on the east coast so I have fish and chips often, these are amongst the worst I've ever had. Convenient for a park over the road to go sit in

Saw Sullivans was busy and thought must be somewhere else better. Well I found somewhere, Chips and Gails. Excellent chips and fish, service was friendly and efficient. Prices are very reasonable.

Great food well cooked friendly staff

Called in Saturday 26th March at lunchtime and was served by (Auntie) Gail. We didn't want bellybusting portions and the size options were great. Freshly cooked and tasty. We sat in the park and enjoyed our lunch. When back I'm the area, we will visit again.

I didn’t know this place existed even though Gail has had it 11 years as it’s not on the seafront but still easy enough to find and park outside of. The fish and the chips were both perfect.

Nice fish and chips but I wasn't sure if I was in London or hornsea. Large fish and chips £11.25 whats going on here I no inflation on the rise but come on . All I can say is thank god for places like papa's keeping there prices to a realistic price .

Always top quality food. Cheerful, friendly and good humoured. My son (Sausage Face) thinks that it's the best chippy ever and he's fussy.

I visited today with my family. We wanted fish and chips to eat in the park. The service was quick and no waiting time. The food was served in boxes and with decent forks which is always a bonus with kids. We order fish and children 3 times. The fish and chip meals all come with a side too which is a bonus. When we sat in the park, the food was still lovely and hot. The fish is particular was beautiful with a lovely golden batter. The gravy was delicious and the portion size of chips was more than enough. After visiting Hornsea only a few weeks ago and eating on another local chip shop (where the food ended up in the bin), this was a very pleasant alternative and we will definitely come out of our way to visit here again.

We had fish and chips tonight and were disgusted! The fish had either been refried or fried frozen, I'm more inclined to think it was refried because the batter was dark in colour and the fish was dry and overcooked. There are many fish shops in hornsea so I am appalled that they do not care about what they serve their customers!!! We will not be going again!!

Two trays chips and curry sauce purchased. Thè chips were pale and soft.ate half and threw the rest away AS did my wife.(expensive lesson learned. )

Extremely rude. Shops are not allowed to ask anyone about mask wearing. A tiny little plastic infront of your till, will not protect anyone. Your staff member, who doesn't wear a mask, kindly touched her nose, with her sleeve. Rude and unhygienic. Train yourself up, then pass it onto your staff .

Walked 4 miles down the coast into Horsea, called here. Ordered fish, chips & peas & they were excellent. When in the area again will return for another lunchtime treat.

We only got to find out about this place after bumping into friends and them mentioning it to us and recommending we try it out. We were very glad we did! The chippy is off the main area but only a five minute walk away from the seafront. There’s a varied menu and the current Covid restrictions mean that only one person is allowed on the premises at any one time. The food itself was very very tasty. The chips are lovely, not greasy and soggy - just right. The fish was delicious and the sausages and peas lovely too. It only misses the fifth star for me because of the price of a fish special was a little higher than I would expect (£10) and the portions of chips were a little on the smaller side. That said, the food was yummy and I will return!

Good food, good service and some nice meal deals

went into this fish/chip shop on Tuesday 22/12/2220 as our usual one was closed we ordered fish with a pattie twice one small bottle orange and one breadcake and came to just short of £14.00 for the size of the fish we thought it was disgusting and not worth what we paid don't get me wrong the taste was there but the value certainly was not after the batter was taken off the fish the fish content was equal to 3 small fish fingers. Sorry to say but never again.

I have been in most of the top f+c places in hornsea;harpers/deep blue or whatever the tax man calls it,sullivans,the place opposite the toilets/cafe on the front,the one on the shopping ctr going out towards freeport- which i found ok ish & not as brill as i had been told & then going home one night i passed by chip n gails on my way home & saw the queue so made a memo to myself to try this on my next visit. Last week that trip to hornsea came up and i called in for my tea.very good covid adherence. Details outside about procedure of covid,only one person in the shop at any time plus on street parking outside. Very polite,friendly staff. I ordered fish patty,chips & mushy peas. The chips are the best ive had in a very long time and better than those offered in whitby-the supposed "wembley" of fish & chips. Excellent fish patty with potato & white fish in a nice batter & mushy peas done to a tee. Nice consistency,nice natural colour whereas some places it resembles fairy door step soap these are a natural green & not watery or sloppy. Well done chip n gails-my new go to in hornsea for fish & chips 5/5 !

You can tell a good chippy by the queue. Visited on holiday and wasn't disappointed. Not greasy. Chips were lovely and I had cod which was just right.

Arrived just after noon ,yes lot’s of people waiting outside for their food,great service my order was taken at the the door,very safe procedure and contactless payment. Few minutes later my haddock was ready and what a lovely piece of fish cooked in a crispy golden batter wish I’d had the chips as well now! Called today by off chance..I can honestly say that I have never had any as good.i wish I lived nearby!.get a gazebo up and some seating outside and it's a winner!

Me and my partner like to consider ourselves to be experts on fish and chips shops between Wetherby, York and Hull. Therefore we are so happy to live in the same village as Chip and Gales because this brilliant chippy is right on our doorstep. Just finished a portion of haddock, chips and mushy peas which were amazing as alwsys and felt the need to give praise to the quality and service we get every time. Five stars.

Overall good fish & chips however my criticism is that it is a bit hit & miss with the fish sometimes its lovely and sometimes it tastes very sea watery and is quite purple and also the portions are on the small side.

Average ‘chippy’ , nothing special, very greasy chips and average fish . There are better options in town.

Stopped today while out driver trg in and amongst the lockdown. Staff were very professional showing discipline with social distancing. Food was spot on and very welcoming after hours of driving, a very positive experience, thanks very much 🙂

Very busy excellant fish shop. Always busy but well worth waiting for if you have to I go back here often.

This chippy is great for all the family. Great service and the shop is really clean. Staff are friendly and recommend their food deals of the day. The fish better is delicious. All our grandkids had a meal deal and ate every bit. Great value for families and delicious food.
