This was our first time here and probably our last… The food was good and flavorful. The atmosphere is very laid back. Great place to sit and converse. The value is was average, a little overpriced. Punctuality and service was poor. The servers lacked knowledge in explaining what some of the dishes came with, all they did was point at the menu and read you the description (which were 2 phrases). The service was extremely slow. Waiter over 20 mins to have someone take our order. Our food came out at different times for everyone and the steam rice was not steaming, it was cold. During our meal, no one came to check on us or asked us if we wanted refills on our drinks. By checkout, we see that there is a 10% SERVICE CHARGE! If service was good, I wouldn’t even mention it. I don’t understand why certain restaurants have a charge like this and provide horrible service. Do better, have your servers be more personable. If the food wasn’t good, it would’ve been a 1 star review.

We, a group of 25 people, had a CNY celebration yesterday for lunch. it was really great! Authentic Chinese beef hot pot you don't want to miss. The taste is much 'Chinese' than other bigger and posh Chinese restaurants. I know it because i am Chinese!!

The hot pot here is incredible. You can choose from bone broth, spicy broth (not for the faint hearted) or both. The spicy broth is very spicy but also has a very complex flavour so it is the perfect warm broth for accompanying your selection of vegetables, meats, fish and tofu. The bone broth has an earthy flavour, and is a great option if you want to avoid the spice but still enjoy the cozy hot pot experience. The staff are lovely, wonderful at advising on each dish and hot pot accompaniments. I will be back for more spicy hot pot.

This place used to be great! Not anymore unfortunately. I don't know what has happened in the last two years (probably a change of chef?) but everything tastes the same now. It used to have such a range of unique flavours for different dishes with the use of amazing Sichuan spices, but now that uniqueness per dish seems to have gone. Also too much salt / vinegar is used in certain dishes - throwing the balance off entirely. The customer service is wonderful as always, so I feel sad that I'll have to find another place now due to the food. What a shame!

I have eaten here more than 25 times over the last 5 years. You can infer that I like it. Chilli Cool is the English name; properly translated the Chinese name is Old Chengdu Restaurant. Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan Province and is a gastronomic Mecca. Chilli Cool reminds me of the simpler restaurants I ate in in Chengdu when I was there in 2017. It is one of the four or five best Chinese restaurants I have eaten in outside of China — since I grew up in San Francisco, which is wall-to-wall Chinese restaurants, you can decide if I might know what I am talking about. This place is seriously good! However, it is not for people who want sweet & sour pork, won ton soup, and lemon chicken. Sichuanese food os very spicy, frequently oily, and often based on offal. Be forewarned. And then go and have a great meal.

Went there for dinner with a couple of Chinese friends and ordered a wide range of dishes. Reminds me of my time in sichuan with very familiar and authentic taste profile and just the right amount of spice and numbness. Very satisfying. The atmosphere was great as well and the staff were very friendly and helpful when recommending dishes. Particular highlights were the dry wok fried pig intestines, dry wok fried loctus roots and the cold noodles. Pork intestines that I have had in other restaurants usually had a parculiar taste, but it was not the case here. They were crispy on the outside and as you bite in, the intestine crunches and melt in your mouth. All the chili and sichuan pepper flavours just bursts into your mouth. So Gooddd! The noodles were handmade in the kitchen and you can immediately taste its freshness and the chewiness of a properly risen and hand knittd dough. Would definitely go again.

It is a simple, non-fancy type neighbourhood Chinese of restaurant which serves some authentic Sichuan dishes. I am a huge huge fan of hotpot, so I visit any supposedly good restaurants that were claimed to offer authentic ones. Went there with my Chinese best friend with high expectations, then left with a terrible impression of this place. The soups were nothing special, food to dip were cold and far from 'fresh'. I seriously had a stomachache and felt like throwing up right after the meal. I don't get how this place received lots of good reviews when I did my research (I always do when it comes to food), as my boyfriend also commented that 'Chilli Cool has the worst hotpot ever' when I was complaining to him. Although this restaurant has many Chinese customers which gives you the wrong impression of "being authentic", the food is absolutely not. My husband and I ordered the Szechuan Savory hot spicy chicken (口水鸡), horrible, the chicken pieces are so bony and tough to chew- it supposed to use really tender chicken pieces; Stir-fried slice fish with chilli sauce (水煮鱼) - a classic sichuan fish dish, again, horrible, the fish slices supposed to be white fresh slices, instead, its all brown and seems soaked in the chili oil god knows how long; homemade stir-fry pork (农家小炒肉), compare to the other 2 dishes, this is consider the best dish, but way too salty, in fact, all 3 dishes are so salty, its almost impossible to swollen without rice/water. the ingredients in the chicken and fish dish are very suspicious, i doubt they use any quality meat/fish. the food looks NOTHING like the picture on the menu, so use your imagination. all 3 dishes we ordered are classic (and popular) sichuan dishes and we used to order them in every sichuan restaurant back in china, any restaurant fail to make these 3 dishes right are most likely not authentic and definitely not worth 2nd visit.I don't know how can any one that has the basic knowledge of sichuan food will think the food in this place is anywhere near "authentic" , if there is anything authentic about this place, is the environment- sticky greasy floor/table, and the cash only policy.

Neither was too hot, but had very nice seasoning - we finished both plates! Not particularly cheap, but not expensive either (mains just under £10). Great for dinner after a late evening working - would definitely return!

Excellent schezuapn cuisine. I had the lamb with chilli. Spicy but not overly hot. Ample portions. Friendly staff, more Chinese customers than any other. Go for the food, not the atmosphere.

Sometimes your palate feels bored to death and you can't remember the last time you felt a new taste sensation. The remedy is a pilgrimage to the totally unique Chili Cool. Authentic Sichuan food, verified by my acupuncturist whose wife is from Chengdu. Always full of Chinese diners who say this is the most authentic Sichuan food in London. I never go to London without going there. Highly recommended.

Random stumble-upon visit. Wasn't expecting too much. Really great food. Great spice level. Wide choice of dishes. Staff friendly enough. Worth seeking out

Recomendable 100%

This type of cooking is not too common in uk . It was chilli hot. Really good authentic food and plenty of it. Ideal for one berween two and therefore works out as inexpensive .Atmosphere is busy and slightly chaotic but despite appearances the staff are on top of it. The staff are efficient and though not gushing, they are not unfriendly.Recommended !

I have been a regular devotee of this spice pot for the last few years. Massive portions, always delicious. Particularly love the catfish in chilli oil and the ma po tofu. Food heaven. Can be very busy (with very good reason)

I come here with my partner every time we come to London. We always get the shredded pork with sticky rice to share, as it is incredibly tasty. We've tried a few other dishes and enjoyed all of them. I would also recommend the jasmine tea! The food is well priced and the portions are quite large. The service is usually great. The staff are friendly and attentive, genuinely lovely people. However, the service can be a bit lacking during peak times, when the restaurant gets very busy and a lot of stress is placed on the small number of staff. Don't let this put you off though - just come for a late lunch or an early dinner. Avoid the rush and you'll find that this restaurant is one of the best restaurants that London has to offer. A hidden gem.

I really love szechuan cooking and this place really did it for me. The only difference here is that they use more chilli in everything, hence the name chilli cool, i'm assuming. It is the spiciest szechuan I have had in years. Service was a little rough.

I havent been here for a good 5 years or so and always loved the Sechuan ( sorry, SP?) flavours, but faniced authentic Chinese and was meeting my Mum and a friend for a film at the Brunswick and didn't fancy eating from one of several chain places on offer there. On entering I noted it was very busy with a crowd who appeared to be Chinese/ East Asian students. So far, I thought that was a good indication. Unfortunately I soon realised the hygiene and cleanliness of the place was beyond revolting. The floors were literally slippery like an ice rink with grease, the tables were not much better. Before I moan more about the state of this I would like to say the food we ordered was very tasty. It was such a shame we had to ignore all the filth while we were eating it. We had green beans with pork, a fried chicken and chilli dish and another minced pork dish that resembled a take on the chinese takeaway staple of crispy duck and pancakes, (at least in the helpful photo on the menu- which was also horribly greasy to the touch)- the pork was tasty but it was perpexingly served with a supermarket pitta bread! The beans and the chicken dish were good, as was the pork and the small portion of rice was adequate though possibly not the freshest thing on earth. The worst thing I experienced was the toilets. Literally the most foul smelling, vile health hazrd I have ever seen in any eating place, I am no snob and would say McDonalds or a random chicken shop can maintain acceptable bathrooms better than this place. I literally felt sick entering the ladies room. One tiny cubilce with a broken seat, grime, filth and god know what on every surface and not a sign of soap or indeed even toilet paper in sight. The filth and the abysmal smell was enought to make me neary vomit. And I have a strong stomach. I complained to the staff about this and they looked neither surprised nor bothered. Such a big shame, as onviously if the place is this dirty then it makes you to wary and grossed out to really enjoy the food. Service was OK, but I don't expect much on that side of things from a place like this. What I do expect is a premesis that requires their staff to clean the floors, bathrooms...well everywhere on a daily basis. despite the decent authentic food here the cleanliness issues repulsed me, quite frankly they should be ashamed. Urgent changes need to be made, as 5-6 years ago it was a lot cleaner. Looks like they have failed to properly clean the place since my last visit! I am giving 2 stars purely for the food alone, but if they sorted the hygiene side they could have easily got a 4. Why ruin the work of good chefs by failing basic food hygiene 101?

The service was unacceptable and so rude! My card got declined and my friend went back home to get his card, which is only a 15 minutes wait! But one of the staff asked me to leave the table and stand by the cashier as I wait for my friend! Besides. There was no form of name registration, when people wait for the table causing a lot of misunderstanding and time wasting! Very not recommend ! The food was bad and oily! The worse service ever!

My Italian buddy, who not only eats great food but also cooks it superbly, knows these tucked away places. Like Chilli Cool. And I love Sichuan cooking! This was some of the best. Pork Belly; Chicken; Beef Hotpot; noodles and rice. And Tsingtao. It was a feast and reasonably priced. I'll be back. I won't order quite as much next time because those portions are very generous! This restaurant really has to be tried, especially if you like your chillis!

Ordered a big pot of spicy fish, fried pork intestine, stirred fried veg and spicy chicken to be shared among 3 of us and the bill came up to be around £80 with drinks and rice. It was quite value for money. The fish pot was huge and they were really generous with the fish slices. This fish slices was so soft that it just glides down my throat. It would have been a perfect dish if they could up the spicy level. The fried pork intestine was not really to my liking as I thought there was quite a strong smell to it. Otherwise the other 2 dishes was done perfectly with the right amount of spices without being too overwhelming. I would definitely recommend this place if you have been travelling around Europe and is craving for some decent Asian food. It's just a stone throw away from King's cross so it's easy to get to.

The menu is vast. I love the beef hot pot, green beans with pork, pork steamed dumplings and white rice. I usually get the hot jasmine tea to help my stomach digesting these warmly spicy and oily delicacies. A meal here is like a quick trip to southern China.
