Visited for a sunday lunch which was nice but missing parts of the meal. Had to ask for the cranberry sauce it was advertised with, to be told they could get hold of any, really?? Wasnt offered mint sauce as an alternative as other diners later were. Also noticed other diners had mash with their meal which wasnt on ours but should have been. Main pub is lovely, as is the beer garden. But the Ladies toilets are scruffy and dirty. Odd taps and odd toilets, and lots of dirty marks on the paint work in the cubicles. Needs a bit of TLC at the least!

Food and service are repeatedly and shockingly disgraceful. There is no point in writing a review on here as the reply will be bog standard, blah blah blah. Nothing has changed nor improved for a long time now so the 'Manager's' replies and empty promises are not acted upon. I suggest you go for a quick drink as the area is pleasant. As for going for a meal or any length of time, trust me I would go elsewhere.

After many years of going to the abbey, we called in last night, being a Tuesday it was pretty quiet, which was fine, there seemed to be plenty of bar staff and we were served quite quickly I then went to the toilet and found no soap,I was very disappointed as I thought that was the first and main way we can stay on top of this pandemic and someone has to still care. I informed the manager and staff, I was surprised by their reaction , as I was totally ignored, there was no recognition of oh ok I’m really sorry we’ll get it sorted, I was just completely ignored, they actually just turned their head away from me and made no comment, at all, how rude. I went back to the toilet an hour later and there was still no soap, so nothing had been done and they had literally took no notice of me. If they had just acknowledged me instead of ignoring me I would not be writing this, such a shame over such a small thing that they can’t be bothered with.

Food really disappointing, poor quality and presentation. have they changed chef? Visited today, service quite poor, dirty tables outside. Not too busy? Table service only, which is understandable, but I witnessed an elderly gentleman trying numerous times to get the attention of staff whe were chatting together, in order to get a drink , in exasperation he finally went to the bar. A friend wanted a coffee , we were told there was none available! So disappointed, it was once a great pub .

Had a table booked for my birthday meal. Stood around for about 5 minutes whilst a waitress walked past me multiple times (I hate interrupting). Anyway I did and said I’m booked in. She said sit anywhere. Some confusion on alcohol free beer (one of the party was served alcoholic beer after a lengthy discussion of what none alcoholic beers were available). Even though it was table service, we had to keep getting up to get a waitress as we seem to just get ignored. To busy serving groups of men drinking to bother with a family with kids. The food was really lovely though so credit to the chefs. We all had empty plates. Shame about the miserable faced staff. Seems like a common theme in the reviews. Maybe the staff need to be reviewed before you lose custom.

We came on a Sunday thinking that surely it would be cleaner than usual as they only have the outside to worry about… No! Filthy, disgusting, scummy are just some of the words that come to mind. It was not even that busy when we arrived yet every table was piled high with glasses, bottles and fag packets. The guy came out and took our order, did he go back in with any glasses? No. Just walked past them. He proceeded to come in and out many times over the next hour and just kept walking past them. There were chips and cigarette packets all over the floor too. Maybe they don’t own a brush! What is the point in having a nice beer garden and a listed building if it always looks like the aftermath of a student party?? It aspires to be a Wetherspoons and not a very good Wetherspoons at that!We looked through the window on the way out and it was a tip inside as well. Not sure how as there were only people outside! We would like to bring friends here when they visit as it is close by and a pretty building but we just couldn’t, it would be embarrassing. We have said many times, one more chance. Not any more.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

I’ve written this after trying to eat in here on last Thursday evening - 7-30ish - with my wife, only to be turned away, because they were too busy and the kitchen was closed - there were very few customers that I could see, so I am confused. We went to the Fiveways incidentally. But this is just the latest in a line of incidents. I’m not someone who complains normally, but I feel I have to write about this once wonderful pub that I have visited for over 30 years with my pals, my wife, the family all sorts, which now appears to be in terminal - one might say MANAGED -declineWe visit about once every two weeks and recently there’s always something you can’t get on the menu or a beer that’s not available - and I mean ALWAYS - whatever the day whatever the time, just basics it’s crazy. There used to be a real good team of chatty, pleasant people, working hard, willing to help and always 3 or 4 of them working so you'd get served. But now the lack of staff is extraordinary. One lad has been there a while and is fine but there is rarely anyone with him other than the odd new person. They are so overworked and customers get frustrated with them which is not fair but people are often waiting 10 minutes at both bars to get served and I've seen a few groups walk out in recent times. How much is a barman paid? Surely if a group of even just 2 or 4 walk out it's way more lost than the pub would have paid in wages? The only other people you see around these days are the so called management. Two or three weeks ago I walked in and the female manager and another manager - who has been there for years - were chatting to each other as I walked up to the bar. They both looked at me and promptly walked off, leaving no-one else on the bar. Extraordinary!! 10 minutes later I was still waiting to get served and they were nowhere to be seen, with just one young lad covering both bars. There just seems to be a lack of interest here at the moment. It's not the first time I've seen these managers - especially the female one I'm afraid but she's not on her own - just walk off a clearly busy bar with lot's of people waiting and leaving customers waiting for ages. We ran our own newsagents for years and if I treated my customers like this, we'd have gone bust years ago. I understand there’s a new manager but can honestly say I have only spotted him twice after another couple pointed him out, and that was cleaning tables, and whether this is managed decline or it has genuine problems I don’t know, but there's competition all around Marstons and you need to up your gameps I'm new to all this and didn't know which tripadvisor page was right so put it on both

‘Not good’ doesn’t even come close to describing our visit last night. 1. I visited the ladies toilet where I noticed amongst all the foul language carvings on the door (the doors themselves looked straight out of a rough youth club despite the rest of the place, including sinks, having been refurbished in the last 2yrs), some excrement smeared on the door. In the neighbouring cubicle, someone had left a dirty paper towel on the floor. I would have reported this to the staff but...2. The two staff on looked tired and strained. When we first arrived at @8:30, there was only one lady on who was struggling to take basic orders serving the very limited number of punters in. As a result, it took @10mins to get a drink. You used to be able to get tea, coffee etc as an alternative to alcoholic beverages, but I was informed this is no longer an option, despite there being a hot drinks machine visible on the bar.3. The atmosphere inside the pub was awful: this used to be a thriving pub, standing room only on quiz nights (of which this was one), people sitting round the bar, having a laugh. However, even when the quiz started, the pub was only half full. 4. The quiz questions were very drawn out- long pauses between each question as if this was deliberate ploy to get more people to the bar- it instead irritated a lot of people.5. A very limited food menu looked even more limited.I have been going the Abbey intermittently for the past 10yrs and I have never known it so empty and lifeless. I’ve always looked forward to my visit but now I just want to go for the quiz and get out as quickly as possible (even going home for the toilet). I note the number of negative reviews on tripadvisor, (quite a lot of the positive ones seem to stem from one particular event) stating more or less exactly what I have outlined above but the management don’t seem haven’t responded- do they care? It’s in a nice area and has a lovely country pub vibe despite being in a big city, but the way it is being treated is frankly disgusting and it deserves better.

The Childwall abbey hotel has always been a place my family have visited when I come down for the weekend to see my son and his kids, everytime I have been more than pleased with the service, however this time it is with deepest regret and sorrow that I write this review. I am not one to complain or bash down local businesses however I was utterly mortified by what I witnessed in the Childwall Abbey. Firstly, when my son was returning from ordering our food at the bar he came back utterly disgusted by the amount of flies he seen on the ceiling and instantly regretted ordering our food at such a dirty place(pictures attached). The waitress who brought our food over was a lovely polite young girl and was very accommodating to all our needs, however about 20 minutes after she served us, I noticed her rather upset after being spoken to terrible by a women who I would only presume to be the manager. I felt really awful for her, not only was it unprofessional but just damn right nasty. I came back from using the restroom to tell my son just the awful state they were in for him to also agree with me telling me the gentleman's was exactly the same. The male manager, who I haven't seen around before came over to clear our plates with not even a smile on his face as he snapped at his staff and huffed and puffed his way around the pub. This pub goes down in history as a pub that community is built upon and family's have come to enjoy there weekends for years and now it can only be described as a ghost town. People have told my son that locals have been leaving to drink at other pubs and families are turning away before they even enter the doors. I am more than upset with my experience, I hope there is change so that next time I visit my son we can consider returning to a pub we hold close to our heart.

I understand a £lot has recently been spent on a refurb however the overall pub layout remains largely unchanged and hence still feels cramped wherever you sit. The seating arrangements are crying out for a redesign. The food is average at best, and we all felt it was overpriced for what it was. Two of the four meals ordered had issues albeit minor. We stayed for the 9pm Thursday night quiz, which started just before 10pm. The quiz was disappointing; poorly attended and delivered as if it were a funeral service. The quiz guy did an excellent job of sucking every last ounce of fun and enjoyment from the proceedings....probably explains the poor turnout! We certainly won't be quizzing there again... Probably best to attend this gaff during the day and sit outside. Note the smallish carpark over the road gets full quickly and there is little other parking nearby.

used to come here in the 00s and stopped as the menu never used to be that good for veggies. Looks like its improved now. Great cosy bar and staff friendly. Minus point for allowing dogs though.

This is my local and we don’t usually eat here but decided to have something on the spur of the moment. We waited an hour and ten minutes for two meals -even after asking staff on two occasions and being told-just five more minutes. By the time the food arrived we had lost interest and lost our appetites. The chicken burger was dry and the steak over cooked. So disappointed.

I attended a party in Childwall Abbey and found the bar staff to be friendly, the service was excellent. A good selection of beers all reasonably priced and a really nice atmosphere.

The Childwall Abbey has improved vastly since we last visited. We found a very warm welcome and efficient service. There was a new menu with plenty of vegetarian choices. I had a lovely lunch of mushroom, broccoli and cheddar wellington. The pie was a meal in itself, but came with a generous portion of chips and delicious vegetables. My wife had beer-battered halloumi. Both meals were very good value for money. Altogether, it was a very enjoyable experience.

Visit regularly with our dog and it's fab. Yes it can be busy and kitchen staff cannot cope with number of food orders but I have seen an increase in customers since welcoming dogs. Let's hope other pubs take heed and allow the same after all, our dogs are usually more well behaved then the out of control children. Great place to drop.on after a walk in Childwall woods.

Called in on Sunday night with a group of friends for a quiet pre Christmas drink, you know the score bit of a catch up Chin wag etc .But was very disappointed at the amount of young children running riot in the place at 9:30/ 9:45 at night???? . They were running around all over the bar and lounge area, under tables, behind chairs with no one seemingly caring what they were doing. I accept that this is a parenting issue,, but the bar staff / management could not care less. My friend asked the bar staff if there was something they could do !!!! Like ask the children’s parents to control their children, stop them running into tables and chairs etc, but they looked at him like he had two heads ???. I except it’s a family friendly pub but late on a Sunday night should not be the time or place for a children’s noisy crèche, Will think twice before returning to the Abbey again

I really want to like this pub. It’s my local and it could be amazing, a real gem with its great location, atmosphere and views. But alas it isn’t. I’ve been coming here for 30 years; I keep trying but it still disappoints. It’s so inconsistent - sometimes it’s OK, sometimes awful. Often I boycott the place for months in exasperation. Let’s start with the positive: the decor with the new refurb is better; it’s brighter and fresher and pleasing. There’s even a Nomeat veggie menu. Great! - except most of the stuff is not available and it’s priced higher than the main menu (why?). We order; the usual 30 min wait and it’s not even very busy. The steaks and fish ‘n chips are good; the veggie burger is disgusting, the salad looks a year old and is sent back. The service is poor - we have to clear our own table of dead glasses and plates when we’ve finished, we get so fed up waiting. There’s 1 poor server for the whole place and 2 bar staff. No idea who the new manager is. And this is the Abbey: the real problem is understaffing, and the fault lies with Marstons. Servers and kitchen staff hate it and leave, and the cycle continues... and we, the poor locals, look on in despair but hope keeps us coming back to see ‘Was it really that bad?’. Yes, tonight it was disappointing - again.

Had the roast today, place was busy and staff are friendly. Was made up when I seen two people on the bar instead of the usual one, so was served promptly. The roast was ok but could be so much better. Roast beef was fine, roast potato’s lovely, new potato lovely, but the let down is the veg, Yorkshire and gravy. The veg is just carrot sticks, turnip sticks, garden peas and broccoli so is a bit boring as supposed to mashed carrot and turnip. The Yorkshire pudding is exactly like an aunt bessi one (tiny little think cooked from frozen). The gravy was to thin and there was not enough of it.

. . Creer o No Creer. . . "Las mesas no tienen números! ".

Got kids who like treasure hunts? Well, they'll have an abundance of missing items to find from the food - instead of giving them crayons and paper, a game of 'Spot the Missing Food Item' ensues from the moment the first plate arrives at your table, to the moment the second one after that half an hour later. But be quick! By the time the last plate lands on your table, you will have amassed such an appetite through waiting that you might not even notice what's missing!

Visited Sunday 24th September. Fantastic roast dinner, hand carved and served right in front of you with delicious gravy. This is a very traditional pub and is in great surrounding the only issue with the place is that every time we go there is only ever one person serving on the bar so you can wait a while to get served and then once you have been served your drinks you then have to pay at a separate till for your dinner (I think this only applies to the Sunday lunch though) will keep going, just hope they put one more person on the bar.
