Chez Mumtaj in St Albans

Having a dairy allergy and being aware that Indian is not somewhere I can usually eat, I emailed before booking to ask for their allergy menu or to ask if they could tell me what dishes could be made dairy free. The response I got was ‘please tell your waiter when ordering as anything on the menu can be made dairy free’ With this response we booked for 4 people for last Saturday night. I was genuinely looking forward to being able to have a lovely Indian meal out. On arrival and being given menus I mentioned to the waiter that I had a diary allergy and had emailed before booking. There was complete confusion and the staff had no idea what I was talking about or how to deal with it. After speaking to another waiter the manager then came over. Again a lack of understanding and language barrier prohibited the discussions. The manager then proceeded to tell me that not everything could be made dairy free, I could have fish or vegetarian dish or the ‘lamb doesn’t soak up much of the yoghurt when it’s marinated’ so you could have that aswell. That’s just an unbelievable comment for an allergy. I don’t eat fish and I hadn’t come out to have a vegetarian dish. I wanted to order a chicken dish and was told that it’s all pre marinated in yoghurt so this wasn’t possible. I can only take from that that the chicken is brought in already marinated so not made fresh as you are led to believe. There was no understanding or accommodation for the fact that I had emailed in prior to booking and that was the reason we booked. Their understanding of allergies is slim to non so I would not recommend to anyone. Overall very disappointing and we left not having dinner as it couldn’t be catered for as confirmed via email beforehand. We tried multiple times to explain to the waiter and manager the issues which were disregarded/dismissed or not understood. This is pretty disgraceful customer service and left a very bitter taste on our evening out. For somewhere that tries to put themselves above the norm I can’t say i would waste my time or money in visiting. There are many other places which offer a much better service all round.

The food was presented beautifully, almost too good to eat. The flavours were amazing, with the service being friendly and very efficient/ hospitable. I will definitely be visiting again

Don't put on the website 45-50mins for delivery then turn up after 1hr 40mins later!!

Highly recommend Chez Mumtaj. A party of 13 were catered for superbly. Food was delicious. Can't fault it.

Best Indian restaurant in St Albans

Excellent as always, highly recommend!

Having walked past many times we finally caved and came for the lunch and early bird special. Although one of the more expensive set menus in St Albans at £21.95 PP it is one of the few that runs into the evening. Chez mumtaj certainly delivers on flavour, we ordered: Garlic chili prawns Aloo Tikki Lamb rogan Josh Paneer Manchurian This came with butter naan and garlic naan Each dish had its own separate flavour and were all delicious. The prawns were a particular treat along with the lamb. Service was friendly and efficient. Not pushy, the waiter checked if we wanted more drinks etc. We will 100% come back.

Love the food from Chez Mumtaj! Definitely my favourite Indian in St Albans.

Food was absolutely incredible, very good flavours and unique dishes. Service was bang average nothing to complain about but nothing to remember either, they did their job. Atmosphere for a Saturday night was great, we came at 8:30pm and it was great. They turnt off the music which was why it is not a 5. Overall great experience and I would go again mainly because of the food.

WOW!!! Incredibly tasty . Every dish was a taste bud sensation. Spotlessly clean, lovely atmosphere and friendly staff. Allure ( not sure if spelling is correct) was just lovely . Best food ever ! Thank you for a great evening.

Delivery through Just-eat last Wednesday night. Amazing starter AMAZING curry.,but we had problem wt mushroom rice which spoiled our dinner. Anyway we only asked for rice refund. We ll order again cs in my opinion best take away in St albans.

Unfortunately the lamb curry this evening was very spicy and oily. This is the first time this has happened but we were disappointed.

The curry sauce was good. However, the lamb in a lamb curry tasted more like boiled beef and was a bit hard. The chicken in a chicken curry had a strange sour taste (spoiled?), so had to be thrown into a bin.

We don’t order curry from anywhere else. The consistent high standards in all Chez Mumtaj do are so refreshing. The food is fabulous and soooo tasty. They’re either quick when want asap or on time when specified. The orders are never wrong too. Looking forward to visiting the restaurant soon.

I can’t recommend this amazing place enough! They listen to my requests, always punctual and always amazing food! Although on the pricey side it is well worth it!

Lovely and quiet, great food and service!

This was our go to take away for Indian food, not cheap but was always worth the extra ££ for the fabulous food. Don't know what happened last night but it wasn't to the same high standard we are used to. Firstly, we ordered at 6pm but food hadn't arrived by gone 7pm so called and was told it was out for delivery and to allow 5-10 minutes. 15 minutes later it arrived with apologies that it had just come straight from the restaurant. They had forgotten the order. Secondly, the food was not to the usual standard. The lamb kebab starter was fatty and inedible and my son found a shard of chicken bone in a piece of chicken. Friends who come to ours for Chez on a regular basis felt that they got less chicken than usual. My naan was burnt on the bottom. I don't know what was going down last night but it has put me off going to Chez for the time being. I will try Nouvelle Lounge in Marshalswick next as we havent had takeaway from them before but their restaurant experience has been fantastic. Come on Chez sort it out.

I’m so impressed, even phoned the restaurant to thank the chef for his kind gesture and an apology from the delivery driver for my previous order. Cannot recommend this restaurant enough. If you want an authentic amazing experience of Indian food then try out for yourselves, you won’t be disappointed.

Outrageously good. Naan, Bhaji, Curry - all some of the best I've ever had.

Nan bread was a little disappointing tonight and for the first time the onion bhaji’s were overcooked but the rest of my order was lovely.

Packaging was not good. Gravy leaked out. Roti was too hard

We booked a large family outing to celebrate my husband's special birthday and are so glad we did. The food is absolutely delicious with some unusual combinations, e.g. chick pea tartlets and duck samosas, which were amazing. We ordered liberally across the menu (there were a lot of us!) but I have to say that all the other tables were clearly doing the same thing. Everyone was smiling as they ate, and the staff were absolutely charming. Chad, the chef-proprietor, came out to greet the birthday boy and chat with us, and then moved on to other tables. All in all, a pretty perfect evening, and we will definitely be back for more.

Order was missing a naan bread and the meat/chicken tasted as If it was days old

Went here on New Year’s Eve and waited two hours for our food to be ready - waitress kept forgetting our drinks orders, took ages for them to give us a menu.

Excellent, perfectly cooked tasty food with fresh salad and sides.

This is the second time in two weeks we have been to Chez Mumtaj and whilst the food is good the price and the service are shocking. On our first visit we had to wait an 1hr 45 between the starter and main. We gave them the benefit of the doubt as it was busy. On the 2nd visit we waited just shy of 2hrs. We had to ask where our food was. We were totally ignored most of the night and the price was astronomical for both visits. We have used the Mumtaj on a few occasions over the years but will probably go elsewhere next time.

Great food Lamb pickle curry was lovely-good quality meat Rotis were a bit smaller than expected order arrived a bit late but food was hot I will order again

Delicious curries, I'd highly recommend them to anyone. Genuinely some of the best I've eaten in a while. My only complaint is that some menu descriptions could be better - we ended up with a ludicrous quantity of pappadoms and chutneys because I wasn't sure how many people the "Pappadoms and Chutney Assortment Starter" would serve! A simple "(Serves 4)" would have helped a lot

Fantastic food, in the heart of St Albans. Highly recommend! Only down side is there are no high chairs for children and nowhere to change them, we were lucky and went on a quiet night, but apart from this, a great time had by all and the staff are great!

Excellent food, both main dishes had great depth of flavour, good quality ingredients (lamb fillet and monkfish), and it arrived earlier than anticipated. Also nice to see some different dishes available - soft shell crab was great.

This is a most excellent restaurant . The staff are great and the food sublime . For starters we all had the salmon . That was perfect . For main courses , two had the shell fish , one the lamb pasanda and one the chicken , very hot mushrooms and naan breads added to the meal . Superb all round . Regrettably there was only one poached pear left , two shared that !

I went to this place today. I couldn't find the gents so in a rush I darted in the disabled. An employee was in there as he didn't lock the door & I caught him just finishing. He darted straight out after. He didn't wash his hands & when I was done I had to tell him the soap dispenser was empty & the dryer wasn't working. Just great seems as its a restaurant

We were looking forward to go there, we had to wait 25 minutes for our table, the wait was very long, the wine wasn't good, I wasn't impressed by the food, overall I'm disappointed and will try another Indian in town. The place looks good and high-end though it's a shame. My tikka masala was not well balanced and I had only the taste of cardamom in the palate etc...

Beautiful meal and portions were great. Had meals in the restaurant but tried a rake away and it was exactly as if was sitting in the restaurant

First time here, was looking forward to it. The whole experience was good, but I will say not above some of the other Indian restaurants in St Albans. The food was good, great flavours let down by the service (slightly rude) and wait for food, overall I wouldn't go again but maybe they had an off night - who knows.

2nd time here. Lamb kebab starter was very tasty and the mains, South Indian chicken curry was also good. Service was much quicker than previous time so gets the full 5 stars this time!

Wonderful place to experience Indian food in st Alban's. We found this gem of a place through its high ratings and many awards. The staff are really nice and cater to your needs. The food was well presented and tasted authentic. Cocktails where superbly made. The decor is classy. The only bad point I have to say is as I came late I could tell the staff were eager to close up and go home , and I understand. I will definitely be back

Quick service, great packaging, but the food quality was sadly not authentic enough and fairly expensive. The dhansak which is a parsi dish, was unexpectedly sweet, which it should not be.

High-end Indian restaurant situated on London Road close to town in St Albans. Lovely interior with crisp white table cloths, luxurious ambience and good service . The food was nice. We had the Mumtaz salad ( excellent), salted lassi, coriander naan ( soft and light), prawns ( very good quality), biryani, lemon rice and spinach with paneer. The spinach was amazing, unlike any we have had before in an Indian restaurant. To end, we had mango brulee also very good. This is one of the best Indian restaurants that St. Albans has to offer. Would visit again. Nice place for a celebration

Lovely setting, great staff and fantastic food

The most expensive Indian in the area. The chicken and lamb dishes are served in big chunks. Smaller cuts and more pieces would be better and more flavourful. Chicken tikka masala taste like Campbell’s tomato soup .... I know you think I am stretching it but order it to try

Loved this restaurant - service was great even when super busy on a Saturday night. Every dish tasted great down to the naan. Chef deserves credit for attention to detail and flavours. The atmosphere is cosy and feels like you've gone somewhere special. Fully recommend.

As usual, the food was delicious and everything arrived hot. We're always happy with our orders. I had the mixed grill, it's pricey but worth it, huge chunk of duck and all meats cooked and flavoured to perfection. The chicken tikka masala is so much better quality than other restaurants. Overall it will always be our go-to restaurant for a special treat curry night x

Have been using Chez for a while now. Discovered another lovely dish called Murgh Lazeez yesterday. Food was superb, as always.

Returned again to this excellent restaurant. My wife and I went for Valentine’s night and they had a special menu for the night I must say the combination of the superb dishes were the best we have had in any restaurant of this quality. The mix of dishes were great and we were busting by the end of the meal Staff and management are always very courteous and polite. I highly recommend this restaurant for a perfect evening

I went there for my first time and I noticed the place was totally empty, it took a while to understand if they had a table for two and eventually got something. In general food was good, bottle of wine starts from 25 GBP and ended up to be about 35 GBP each. The dinner place was too big, at least you would think it was from looking outside, and they had a small bar place at the entrance. I might go back to try the bar but food was a be it expensive.

Still waiting…No reply?!?!? Poor quality food from a business that sells Indian food yet sourced via supermarkets but claiming its home made. No acknowledgement to my original review. Again suggests no value around customer service.
