To celebrate my husbands 70th birthday we wanted the perfect place for our celebration and we found it in Chez Joel. We received a warm and friendly welcome which continued throughout the evening - even helping us with our very poor French. But most importantly the food was excellent, well prepared and well presented. It fulfilled all our hopes and dreams and we are truly thankful.

It is difficult in this country to find a bistro/restaurant that really has the charm of a French bistro, but somehow Chez Joel seems effortlessly to achieve just this. During the day this little shop serves as a deli/cafe, but on Thursday, Friday and Saturday it is open as a restaurant in the evenings. It only seats about 14 so booking is essential. It is run by husband and wife team John and Sarah and the food is fabulous, not exorbitantly priced, wines are of good quality and again are not over priced. We went last Saturday, dreadful (even biblical) weather, but we managed to park nearby and dash in, to be met by Sarah who made us welcome as ever. Your table is yours here for the evening, so you do not feel rushed and Sarah tries to stagger arrival times so that she can explain the menu fully to each table. By the end of the evening we felt at ease with all the other diners, there was a birthday to which we all sang Happy Birthday as the little cake was brought out and this all helped to make this a great evening. Thanks once again, we will be back

Visited for a breakfast after a bike ride. Wanted a vegan breakfast which they went out to shop for , it was served within 15mins, freshly cooked and delicious. My partner had a non vegan breakfast and was equally impressed. Charming environment, charming staff. We had a lovely table right by the open door which provided a fresh breeze on a very hot day. Will definitely visit again. Thank you Chez Joel

We spent £6 on two drinks, a coffee and an Oringina. The coffee was very weak and service was slow. There were no menus and not what I expected for a ‘bistro’. Remaining friendly and polite after asking to pay the owner asked why we didn’t want to eat there- ‘you aren’t after brunch.’ My boyfriend politely answered no we wanted to look around and she scoffed and made us feel uncomfortable. Very slow and the meat available looked dry. Extremely disappointed and felt she didn’t like us from the very start as we were clearly tourists.

A couple of good friends recommended this little cafe/restaurant in Steyning to us and we intended to practice our French a little whilst we were there. We had the most convivial evening and a superb meal in a relaxed and comfortable setting. I believe they just open for dinner 3 x nights week, but my goodness they do it well! We will certainly go again. Thank you Sarah and John Cherry & Roger

Living in Worthing, we're short of French places to eat, so it's fantastic to find a real small-town French bistro in Steyning. Excellent freshly-cooked food (the menu hand-written on a blackboard apparently changes every month or two), served by a friendly, helpful lady who knows and loves the cuisine. Don't expect 5-star Michelin attitudes or prices, but do bring an appetite.

This small (about 16 covers) family run Bistro is informal and casual but at the same time the service is friendly and perfect. There is a blackboard menu which changes frequently. on the night we were there there were 7 starters ,and four mains, Filet de Boeuf a la Moutarde,Bouillabaisse, Vegetarian Option and Agneau Marrocain so something for everyone.I had the Coquilles St Jaque followed by the Filet de Boeuf. Both dishes were beautifully cooked. There was a good choice of deserts or fromage. The wine list was short but good and we were provided with tasters before we opened the bottle. If you are in the area then make a point of booking you will not be disappointed. I wished they could up-sticks and move to Greenwich so they were on my doorstep.

Don’t book here if you are looking for a sophisticated evening in swish surroundings. This is a deli during the day and the oil clothed tables in an old minimally restored building is very reminiscent of visits to rural bistros in France. The portions are small but the food is delicious and we had a really wonderful evening, a big part of which was due to the owners interactions with us. I’d like to go back when they have a French language only evening.

Steyning has the luxury of having two tea rooms or possibly more. Luckily this one is at the opposite end of the street to the other one which is a more conventional type of tea room from my memory. This one is modelled on the kind of place that may be found in France according to their menu blurb and I think they have achieved this, it certainly has a lot of character anyway. We had the 'small' baguettes which were delicious and very filling, in fact we couldn't finish them and took the remains home. We also had smoothies which were very good. The pot of tea was in a large metal teapot which was big enough for many cups. This is a good improvement on the small teapots often used in tea rooms. They had some nice looking cakes on show and also some very rustic looking bread which was very tempting. I hope to go back again and try some of their other menu items. Service was excellent.

We go here a couple of times a month for breakfast, they do a very decent bacon sandwich and coffee for £4, which I think is very reasonably priced. Their lunch time offering is always fresh and affordable and they are very accommodating for food intolerance's; they will find something that you can have! We chose Chez Joel following the Tripadvisor status of being #2 in Steyning. As I said at the time to our hostess although the service and the attention we were given was excellent as was the opportunity to sample the wines on offer the three courses we had were rather disappointing. Perhaps we set our expectations too high having eaten in France quite a lot. For example the lobster bisque was a soup full of flavour but not of lobster and the Coquille St Jacques had lots of cheese but only two scallops. The bouillabaisse was ok but not full of flavour and the Agneau Marocainne was a tasty lamb stew but not really easily identified as inspired by Moroccan flavours. The cheese platter was good but there was no fruit or garnish. For the price the meal was good but not good enough to have us rushing back. Just being honest.

Super service, very welcoming and not at all intrusive - great quality food, tea, coffee and a great delicatessen too whilst being very kind to your wallet! I love this place.

What an amazing diner experience. This is truly the best French restaurant in Sussex. Amazing balance of flavours and a wonderful dining experience. The staff are friendly and very knowledgeable regarding food. It is lovely to see new customers and seasoned locals who enjoy this family run restaurant. I highly recommend a visit even if you are not a local. A must in my book. Tres bien! :)

Went with parner was extremely relaxed was great to be not feel rushed. Staff very friendly and helpful. Meal was phenomenal each dish beautifully laid out and each mouthful was a treat. Would definitely revisit with friends and family as although restaurant quaint will happily accommodate larger parties.

Another fantastic evening at this amazing intimate restaurant. This place never fails to please on every level and is one of the most welcoming places in the area.Birthday celebration for myself and 3 others, everyone had a great evening and left the place smiling and fully satisfied.Cheese board never fails to hit the spot with me and the L'escargots are outstanding.Highly recommend to anyone in the local area or well worth the trip if you are not!

Book ahead as Chez Joel gets booked up in the evening. We offered to share our table with a couple who turned up on speck. We all enjoyed a wonderful meal and excellent choice of wine.

Another great dinner in Chez Joel for five. Just dazzling food, including L'escargots, excellent wine and so much fun service. You won't do better in Steyning or anywhere else for an informal, just perfect meal.

The ambience and decor are good but hat really makes this a great place are the amazing cocktails for pre-dinner drinks, exceptional food across all three courses, very good wine list and exceptional service. I highly recommend for friends / family meet up as well as business. Our party enjoyed especially: the cheese souffle starter; entrees the duck and steaks were superb and for dessert, the crumble and the chocolate mousse were divine! Highly recommend
