Amber and Hannah were very friendly and helpful members of staff

Great service at the charnley arms. Staff were great and knew their stuff. Food was hot and great value for money. Drinks reasonably priced and clean and tidy. Will recommend to others to visit.

Thought the Sunday lunch was over priced

Had great expectations. First,the staff were polite and nice but totally unhelpful. Secondly,I ordered a medium rare rump steak. I've had my share of bad steaks but this particular one takes the cake. It was hard,dry and absolutely tasteless. I was eating a burnt crispy rubber. And not forgetting an awful Peppercorn 'gravy' to go along with it. Told the staff to take my almost full plate of unbearable food away and she didn't even ask how my steak was...Absolutely Unbelievable. Staying at the Premier Inn here for the next 5 days which is nice,clean and comfortable but dreading another torturous experience at the restaurant. Most probably would do a takeaway from a chinese or indian for the remainder of my stay.

Great Saturday afternoon get away.....ultimate sharing platter is fabulous and a full bottle of prosecco is only a tenner, what's not to like.

Great choice of food. Big portions. Real value for money. Service was quick. Ultimate combo starter was cooked to perfection and was delicious. Highly recommended.

Food is usually good but GK operate minimum staff so getting served means a wait for food. Not the Staffs fault

Went in to try and get some food, was told you have to be 18 to order and I had no ID (I’m 23) Never in my life have I heard such thing at 5 o’clock on a Sunday.

Had a nice meal here with a party of 18 . They coped well with our party and the food was hot and all meals came out together.

Started buying drinks and then told that food had a 40 minute wait, totally unacceptable in a large pub chain in a large town with only a handful of people in it! 1st time there and is now the last, we left promptly without having anything. *The pubs response to this review is incorrect, we were not a large party outside, it was 3 of us sat inside, get more staff , this doesn't happen in other ones I've been in! Poor answer and a copout! *

It’s ok but it’s looking tired these days

Food was tepid lasagne well not even half full in the pot.

Poor food and unhelpful staff (although some staff were great). We ate both dinner and breakfast here and both times the food was disappointing or not as advertised. We ordered the jacket potato for my little one and it was very dry and came with barely any cheese. We asked if we could have some more as cheese and were told that was just the portion size. Our meals were also very poor and tasted like they had just been microwaved. At breakfast the first day we ordered a boiled egg for my little ones which was great. The second day we ordered the same and were told we couldn't have it as it would mean stopping all the poached eggs as they only had one pan. I then commented that I had a poached egg the day before and she had boiled and was told it varies day by day if they can do it. This leads me to wonder if you just use the same water all morning for the poached eggs as if it was refreshed then it wouldnt make a difference

Hannah and Madi were excellent-helpful and polite. Thank you! Unfortunately the adult food was very average but the children's food good value for money.

We came for the wine Wednesday offer and was served by Hannah… such a lovely person with great customer skills nothing was too much trouble for her. Always happy to help - Made our visit enjoyable :) would definitely recommend - we will be back. Thank you Hannah for your service :)

Food quality is terrible 😕 jerk chicken genuinely takes like fish and the rice could have turned my teeth to dust it was that undercooked along with the kidney beans that tasted off 🤔 I didn't eat it my plate went back full without complaining because I told my husband I don't see the point because staff probably wouldn't have cared anyway chef definitely wouldn't of or they wouldn't send that food out in the first place I just paid the bill and left a full plate my husband got the sliders all dry and black burgers (Including the chicken ones) with a quarter of a rock hard cheese slice on and wilted lettuce which I thought was odd because the burgers were cold so lettuce must have been wilted before it went on the burgers to sum up we paid 35 pounds and only enjoyed the glass of coke we got for our drinks wouldn't return here nor make recommendations for anyone to do so unless your looking for bad food and an awkward atmosphere and by that I mean the server went to walk to our table to ask about the meals saw my plate still full turned around and walked off without asking yet they asked the other 2 tables near us 🤔 feel terrible leaving 1 star reviews but I have to be honest my recommendation is don't waste your money here

Very friendly and polite staff, couldn't fault them. I stayed in the Premier Inn, which is old and tired and in need of modernising. Breakfast was mediocre at best and not up to the normal Premier Inn standards. I won't be staying here anytime soon. Our room was downstairs right next to the allocated smoking area, so we couldn't open our window for fear of passive smoking. This was booked a long time ago as we saw a reasonable deal, and we found ourselves in a disabled room, not that this bothered us. There were children here however the children's plat area consisting of some kind of climbing frame was closed off due to safety concerns.

Terrible also took grandchild for play area which was closed, won't be rushing back

I am a father of 4 and they would not let me buy a coke because I didn’t have my id very unprofessional and rude would not drink here if it was the last pint in the world

Staff are very rude, wouldn’t let me in the over 18 area despite me being 74.

We took our grandchildren for lunch which was great value and tasty. The children were disappointed that the play area was out of action with no indication of when it would be open again ☹

Had the flatbread from the new breakfast menu. Really nice but really needs sour cream . Guacamole & salsa ,no sour cream . The three go hand in hand .Can recommend as a change from full English. Will order again but will take my own sour cream. Take note the powers that be

As a regular diner here, I seem to be finding prices on the rise, but lowering of food standards. Still good tasty food on the most part, but where hings like chicken goujons are being replaced with children's chicken nuggets, it seems a bit penny pinching

Never had a bad meal here and the kids love it. Some really good food and reasonably priced. Food doesn't take long to arrive after ordering. The negative thing is that chairs need a good deep clean

We saw on Facebook that the new menu was out so decided to go as not been for a while I ordered the lamb kofta flatbread it came cold and the nan bread was crispy which should have come soft not a lot of mint yogurt so it was very dry as a new product on a new menu it should have come amazing full refund for my meal was offered would have been lovely if served hot

Had a lovely meal here for a birthday. The service was excellent, quick and friendly. We were quite a large group and were made to feel very welcome. I would definitely recommend The Charnley for a good value, friendly meal.

Not a good pub for an evening drink as chuck you out just after 10.00pm Mon - Friday. Not tried the food so cannot comment on it .

This is an absolutely brilliant place, come to eat here regulary, the staff are polite, friendly and so helpful. This is a family friendly pub with a park. The atmosphere is amazing, food is delicious and a great value! Staff are lovely! Cant fault it!

We often visit the Charnley and always have a great experience. The staff are always very helpful and knowledgeable. Food is spot on and we never have any complaints. Jo and her team do an amazing job and they are the reason we keep coming back. Would recommend to anyone.

Exceptional food and extremely friendly staff. Jo was lovely, very polite and professional, and waitress was also very polite and helpful. Waiting time for food was minimal and cooked perfectly. Cannot fault anything. Would definitely return.

After driving 5ths we arrived at premier inn went to restaurant only to find they close at 8.45am so meal deal from Asda express let’s hope the breakfast in the morning is better than the reviews

First time at charnley Arms lived it great food just as you order it, friendly services and the best bit only waited 20 minutes for my food and everything on the plate was hot

Jo and jeanette always greet me with a smile and have my drink ready as soon as I walk in, they are great! I can have a laugh with them and nothing is too much bother.

Called in on Bank Holiday Monday around 8:50pm, hardly anyone in, ordered a round of drinks (3 people) sat down after being told a section in the conservatory that was in the evening sun closed as it was set for breakfast, then told when flicking through menu on table stopped serving food so got up and left, will not be back.

The drinks cost to much. £10.14 for 2 drinks. A pint of larger and double gin and lemonade where I have been somewhere else that was cheaper for the same drinks

So we booked for 11 and arrived with 17. Not a problem for duty manager Michelle who quickly accommodated us. We all ordered individually. We all received our food together hot and correct. Cannot fault the service. All staff We dealt with were polite and helpful. Thankyou so much to Michelle and her staff .

We were a group of hard of hearing pensioners. We were seated in a quiet area, which was really helpful. The staff were very accommodating, as we wanted to order individually but pay as a group.

We where here this afternoon for the food and dance afternoon. The food was plentiful and well prepared (3 course meal) the tribute act was a the rat pack and the show was very good. The staff are friendly and service was excellent. (Not happy as going to miss the next one as taking grandkids on holiday, but already booked for the tom Jones tribute afternoon. That you all at the charnley arms, looking forward to seeing you all soon x

Lovely clean public house. Not too busy and a nice atmosphere with friendly staff. The food from the starter to the main was fabulous with excellent presentation. Full marks to the chef on that day

Such a shame that the service and general cleanliness of the pub let's the establishment down as it still delivers really good food, sometimes it seems maybe a member of staff down but for staff to say they have checked the toilets between 2200 and 2300 yet we left the place at 21:30 🤔 it seems staff are happy to overlook certain things going on to try and still provide a good service but they do fail when you are able to see these goings on right before your eyes, we also had to remind them that we where waiting on our dessert almost 20 minutes after finishing main course. Such a shame.

Didn't clean our table outside, won't take an order without a table number when at bar, app doesn't work ordering kids food. Little girl got whacked in playground. Bit of a failure all round there today. Please try harder.

We went for Sunday breakfast with a group of friends. On arrival we were told that they would not be serving us for 45 minutes even though there were people in there eating. This is the third time they have not let us eat

We stopped by today Friday at 11.50. ordered 2 drinks and 2 meals. The staff were friendly, professional, happy, excellent team leader welcoming to people coming through the door and great teamwork serving. The food arrived quickly, was hot, full of flavour. We were checked on to make sure everything was okay. Really enjoyed our lunch out and great atmosphere - thank you👍🙂

On our last visit, I rated here as a 3 due to issues with the service given. Went today and I'm more than happy to change to the above rating. All staff were friendly and attentive. Main meals came quickly, food checks were done during the meal and afterwards. There was a wait on desserts due to what we ordered, but staff came and explained this as we waited. Fab offer on for a curry and a drink for £6.50. 2 adult meals and 2 kids meals, all with drinks, then 2 desserts (one being a sharer) and a beer for under £50. Service did not falter despite it getting busier either. Massive well done to all staff working between 5 and 630 today if they see this - outstanding customer service 👏

Firstly the food arrived and it didn't look very appetising, on the menu the smothered steak was served with large chips and what arrived was a handful of chips and peas on a tiny plate, I questioned this and more chips was served. I ordered scampi on top and found this was poor reformed scampi. The steak was requested medium and arrived well done if not further cooked. In whole it was awful despite me eating it and it was disappointing.

Food is really nice and the staff are very friendly

My wife and I have been frequenting here at least 3-4 times a week for food, for around 18 months now so are known to the staff members and management. Our usual drink order is blackcurrant and soda, unless we are drinking in which case we order a bottle of wine as well. As per usual at pubs the strength of the blackcurrant is hit and miss, so I usually carry in my bag a small squeezy apple and blackcurrant, so as to save having to return to the bar if the flavour is not strong enough for my liking. Every single time I visit here despite paying £2.35 for the drink I find it still tastes just like soda water (of which give they give for free), I therefore usually add a squeeze to strengthen the taste. I have never hidden the fact I do this, nor feel I should have to as I’m paying for the drink (pretty much like I usually carry a light mayonnaise as find most places do not cater for this). However tonight this seemed to prove an issue for the duty manager who accused us, across a room of fellow patrons (of whom could have been our friends, or staff / clients of the business I work for), of adding vodka to our drinks, bear in mind this was 5:15pm on a Tuesday evening. I understand her need to check but rather than asking for a quiet word or even doing it discretely at the table she chose to do it in a very public and humiliating manner. I went back into my bag and pulled out the squeezy to show her it was only cordial to strengthen what I had paid for. I was told that the blackcurrant and soda was sold in measures, which isn’t true as at the bar they pour the cordial by sight, the amount of soda added is also not by measure as sometimes stops 2 inches off the top. I was then told if it wasn’t strong enough I cannot add my own I need to buy another measure, so would that be £4.70 for a pint of cordial and soda water? We are not talking about alcohol and I wasn't increasing the volume of drink I paid for. This is absolutely ludicrous and I feel the duty manager instead of accepting that she had wrongly accused us, in a room full of people, wouldn’t let it drop. My wife and I were in disbelief that she had publicly shamed us and then insisting on carrying it on implying we were common thieves. Our household income is in the 6 figures so I can assure you this is not the case. We started to defend ourselves and stated we had done nothing wrong and the duty manager said we could have a refund, whilst we were still engaged in this debate the duty manager started walking away leaving us very embarrassed, we had to chase after her, as after offering the refund she retreated into the bar kitchen. What is also quite shocking, is this is the same duty manager whom my wife on finding something that resembled a toe nail or bit of shell in her vegetables a few months ago, who went to her discretely to inform her and was offered another meal or refund, both of which my wife declined and ate the meal. She merely wanted to help the establishment and let them know incase the issue was effecting other food. I must add other incidents we have had at the Charnley Arms was having to argue with the kitchen via the bar staff, on the last menu change, that the 15oz Gammon came with onion rings, the kitchen staff said it wasn’t on the spec but I said it’s on your menu! I also had to return a meal a few weeks ago, for a refund as the chips had been through the frier more than once and were brown and hollow. The manager refunded the meal. The last issue with food was as recent as last week when my side of Mac and Cheese had blue plastic in it, I asked the supervisor for an explanation as well as the refund and was told that it was when they were grating the cheese, I asked where they doing this blindfolded as it was under the cheese and if it were not for me stirring and discovering it, I would have ate it. Needless to say we won’t be patronising this establishment again and this has just cost them around £4-5k per year!

Been using the place for my Premier Inn cooked breakfasts for the past few months now. Easily the best food of all 4 Premier Inn's in Wigan. Hot, great quality and served by very polite and happy staff. (The wee blonde who has been serving for the past few Monday mornings is especially nice and polite). The place itself is very clean and has a good atmosphere. Highly recommended for both food and a drink out.
