Don’t bother if you’re local. I went for some brunch as the family were away for a few days. Owner gushed over a couple of visitors but as I was in my working clothes I was obviously deemed low life. That was a couple of years ago , my partner and family went today, had to send back the jacket potatoes as they were cold. Maybe the oven is still on furlough!!

So sad to make our annual visit here today and find that the owner is having to sell up. Thanks to Covid and cost of living crisis, it is sadly not viable. We loved going there for great food, cakes, coffee, ice cream etc. We will miss getting insulted by Steven's fabulous sense of humour ❤️. Please support Chaplins in the meantime. Definitely worth a visit.

Passing through Grantown-on-Spey and wanted to have an afternoon hot drink and a cake/scone. Went into Chaplins and straightaway noticed tired and dated decor and lack of interest from staff. Could not see a menu but ordered tea, latte, scone and carrot cake which were ok, shock as bill was a third higher than anywhere else we have been in Highlands. Quite frankly now I understand why there is no menu as prices would have put us off, I have since noticed there are no prices on their website either. My face must have given away the shock at bill but no reaction from man behind counter, funnily enough my partner noticed another couples’ shock at their bill as well.

After a trek around Anagash Wood with the dogs we popped in here for some lunch. We ordered scampi, ham and cheese toasties and kids sandwiches. All very good. Coffee was hot and coke was lovely and cold. Owner made time for us and was joking around with the kids. This is dog friendly but didn't take our dogs in. Cash only. Apple and cinnamon scone was lovely as was the millionaire shortbread. Lovely little place to shelter from the snow. Won't come back to the area but if your visiting well worth popping in. A small cafe decorated with Charlie Chaplin items. The place feels a little dated, but it’s clean and tidy. Staff were perfectly pleasant and the service was responsive. Prices were average for the area but it was cash only during our visit. The food served was fine and the coffee was hot. It was busy with a good turnover of tourists during our visit. The place is dog friendly.

My wife, daughter and I visited Chapplans coffee shop and entered a place that had an immediate oppressive atmosphere from the get go. We decided to sit down all the same and did not notice a member of staff until a minute or so but did not receive any word of greeting despite sitting right in front of the counter. We then witnessed a group of three customers enter with their dog only for them to be immediately turned away on the basis that there was no room for any more dogs. They questioned this as they pointed out the 'dogs welcome sign' in the door but were dismissed with an unreasonable answer, that 'the area allowed for dogs was full'. I looked around and saw there was no such ' dog area' and there were clearly 3 or 4 empty tables! The baffled people then left. Bizarrely, another group arrived 20 seconds later and they too were asked to leave! My wife looked at me and said she felt very uncomfortable but we decided to find a menu ( as there was nothing on the tables). We were then spoken to asking what we were doing? My wife replied that she was looking for a menu. The man then said he was too busy and asked us to leave! Again, there must have been 3 or 4 empty tables at least. We just couldn't believe we had been treated so appallingly and were not the only ones either. The customers that had somehow managed to not be kicked out on arrival all looked incredibly uncomfortable to witness a family of 3 being asked to leave a good 5 minutes after we had been seated! Utterly bemused, we left! This was the worst eating out experience of our lives!

My wife and I popped in here for a wee cuppa and a cake on a Saturday afternoon. As we entered, the woman behind the counter made it very clear that she didn't want us to sit at the tables to our left of the counter as she had just cleaned that side of the cafe; strange, given that it was only three o'clock. We were asked to sit at a table to our right of the counter instead and we happily obliged. There were two young members of staff working; a teenage boy and a teenage girl. The girl disappeared into the back of the cafe, never to be seen again. We waited for at least fifteen minutes and neither the woman nor boy came over with a menu or to ask if we were lunching or just looking for refreshments. The boy saw me getting up to peruse the cakes in the cabinet but still didn't bother to come over to the table to ask what we wanted to order, but carried on clearing a table instead. Meanwhile, my wife needed to use the bathroom but came back almost immediately as there was a big sign across the sink saying "out of order." You would think during COVID times that one would be able to wash one's hands after using the facilities? So, when she returned to the table we waited another few minutes to see if somebody would come and offer us a menu or take our order. As nobody did, we just left. We didn't bother speaking to any staff members on our way out as they just didn't seem interested and as we left another party of people arrived; maybe they had better luck than us.

Called in for coffee on Sunday morning, the welcome wasn't great, don't even remember the gentleman saying hello! What he did make us aware of immediatley was the card payment machine wasn't working, so cash payments only. Having now read the other reviews I'm wondering how long it's been "not working"! My homemade scone was delicious though, slightly warm still, obviously fresh that morning. I'm not convinced my decaff Americano was actually freshly made coffee, it had a taste of instant about it. 2 Americnos, a fruit scone & a Danish pastry cost £11.60 , which I feel is a competitive price. I probably won't rush back which is a shame, due to the lack of competition in Grantown & the location of Chaplins this place should have been buzzing which it definately wasn't.

The man in charge thinks he’s funny, in reality he’s just obnoxious and rude; I felt very uncomfortable being there and wanted to leave before the food had even arrived. In hindsight we should have left at that point. The food we ordered was okay, but definitely not good enough to compensate for how awkward we were made to feel - watching someone openly mock your own 65 year old mother was a horrible experience…and to do so loudly in front of other customers. They take Covid precautions seriously, that’s the only positive comment I can make.

Given the lack of competition, this cafe ought to be a goldmine, but on a Wednesday lunchtime in July with plenty of empty tables (some of them not even set up) I watched 3 groups of people being turned away - the excuse being given that a large group of people had previously walked away without paying because their order took so long, so the owner would only accept groups of 4 or fewer. Most of the passing trade was families on holiday. So, turn away business and tell your customers you don’t trust them? Owner was unfriendly, customers were not acknowledged on entry and ignored once seated. Young server seemed to have received no training in how to take an order and just looked confused when next table asked for gluten free food for a coeliac - lady from kitchen was fine when she came out to deal with this. Food was fine, although order was slightly wrong (past arguing by this point). To top it all, payment was cash only - tiny notice at the till that nobody would see. Owner did not say thank you when I paid. Reviews from last 5 years comment on attitude and disorganisation- stop blaming your customers, get some competent staff who can crack a smile, fill up the tables and turn your business around.

I've visited Grantown on Spey many times, and noticed the overall decline of the town in recent years. This cafe is no exception. Though the windows have had some attention, the interior is dull and dingy and the staff are at best indifferent. Big signs tell you to log in to the covid app, which is fine, but the grumpy man behind the counter wasn't wearing a mask or any other form of protection at all, and for some reason was bending over the drinks as he made them, then proceeded to dismantle the coffee grinder and poke around in it while breathing all over the beans. I felt sorry for the young server as he seemed to get no support, and appeared to be at a loss in how to speak to customers, though he was efficient enough in delivering the food. The whole place could do with a makeover (a counter door was hanging off its hinges), and if this is the best they can do then in the present climate they don't deserve to survive. This was a Thursday afternoon and nowhere else was open or I wouldn't have been in there to start with! Then there's the prices - almost £12 for two lattes and a scone, which had to be paid in cash as they have the same dislike of cards as they do for customers.

Him indoors is partial to homemade ice cream, but it was raining and the candy shop which does Orkney ice cream, only allows two in the shop and there were two already there. So we crossed the road to Chaplins. However, whilst I was negotiating the covid code on my phone, he spied the full menu and decided on soup and a sandwich. We expected a little bowl of soup with a sandwich on the side. Not so.The soup was gorgeous home made leek and potato- not the thick stuff, just a very tasty stock with lots of the veg. Served with homemade crusty bread and butter. Then came the sandwich; each was two slices of home baked bread cut into quarters diagonally. My filling was cream cheese and smoked salmon- very good. His was a mustardy ham with grated cheddar, a great paring and very tasty. But they were served with a lovely dressed side salad of peppers onion and greens, cubed deep fried potatoes, beautifully crisp on the outside and soft inside, and this to die for coleslaw- so good I'd have been happy just with a plate of that and some of their crusty bread. We asked for a pot of tea for two, and got a pot big enough for 4.Excellent efficient service in a very busy lunchtime, with customers from Grantown, tourists, bikers and cyclists. Lovely atmosphere, nice selection of tables for dining or a sofa area if you are just wanting a coffee.Real value for money with change out of £30.

8 of us doing the Speyside Way popped in for a break and some food after walking from Boat of Garten. After 5 miles carrying 10kg on our backs, anything would do. As soon as we walked through the door, it was obvious we weren’t welcome. There was no greeting or anything, just barked instructions to register (scan the Track & Trace QR code) or we wouldn’t be served. Customer service was awful. One of our group had a rotten leaf in their salad. Large chap behind the counter came over and smelt the leaf and acknowledged it was bad. Refused to take this dish off the bill, saying ‘you lot had have been trouble since you came in’... When asked what he meant, he referred to one of the group coming in, asking if he could eat food bought from elsewhere, and then promptly leaving when he was told ‘no’. The guy behind the counter was badly presented; his tracksuit bottoms were falling down showing us more than we wanted to see, his apron wasn’t tied and was all over the food when he would bring it over and he was getting way closer than he ought to have considering social distancing. No respect for tourists, didn’t have half of the menu available (2 o clock in the afternoon) and even the young guy working there was being berated and spoken down to in the hearing of customers. Bottom line... If you want to stand in the doorway for 10 mins waiting for a table to be wiped down, Chaplin’s is for you. If you want to be stared at by large chap behind the till the whole time you eat, Chaplin’s is for you. If you want decent customer service and to eat something relatively palatable, go somewhere, anywhere else!

Stopped here for late lunch en route to Aviemore. As has been previously mentioned the scones are rather large, but wonderfully tasty when merged with excellent butter and jam. The soup of the day was absolutely delicious (chicken and rice) and ably supported by the toasties of cheese and tomato and smoked salmon sandwiches. The guys had the soup and toasties/sandwiches, the girls the scones. All washed down with beautiful tea/coffee. On a cultural note, a visit to the toilets are a must to experience the old photographs of Charlie Chaplin. Apparently he was a regular visitor to this establishment, hence the name!

As stated very slow service tea and a scone took nearly 30 minutes in a nearly empty cafe. The latter were ok but butter was a miserly one pat with any extra charged! Plenty of better options in the town.

We stopped here for lunch, OMG, ordered a toastie and a portion of chips, took nearly an hour, the service was bad, having said that the food was okay, the basic problem was inadequate staffing.

This place has to be one of the worst i've visited, unhygienic large chap serving. We watched him wipe his hands over his sweaty forehead, then go serve a kid an ice cream cone without washing! Shudders!Looking at the menu i'd say its far from value for the price you pay!The food we were served was toasties and they were swimming with grease and had some rotten salad leaves. My other half had a scone and she said she watched it be warmed in a microwave, yet it was dry and stale! Oh and don't dare ask for more than one butter portion! They charge for this! When it came to paying, my other half voiced her polite concerns with regards to the food, which we're simply ignored. The other concern was the cash only payment, in this modern era not very convenient. When she asked for a receipt she was told the machine had ran out of paper. As this was a business lunch not very convenient again. The next day we went to Another cafe on the high street , so much better!

Lovely place, soup of the day delicious, great coffee and hot chocolate. The perfect place to stop when you have a couple of hours to kill on a lazy day in the Highlands on holiday. The girls in the cafe were very friendly and polite. Definitely worth a visit.

My friend And Intjought we would stop in 'Granton' for a light lunch. There's didn't seem to be many places that filled the bill however we decided to enter Chaplins. The place seemed quite busy with only a table right at the door. This proved very draughty and of course very busy with everyone coming and going. There were two young girls 'waiting' on the tables however they seemed oblivious to our entry. We sat at the draughty table for about 10 minutes and were completely ignored. Another table away from the door became vacant so we decided to move to it only to be completely ignored. We decided to get up and leave when one of the young girls decided to walk past our table and start to clear a table which had just been vacated. If you would like to be acknowledged in a coffe shop/restaurant in a reasonable time, this is not the place to visit. We were very disappointed.

Located on main road just off the Square. Had tea and sticky toffee cake, which was wonderful. Good prices. Good spot for lunch or afternoon ice cream or dessert. People were constantly coming in. Owner seemed a little stressed, but service was good. Worth a visit.

We were in Grantown visiting family so popped into Chaplins for lunch. It is principally a tea shop, with lots of cakes, and they provide light meals. I had an absolutely delicious baked potato with beans and cheese, warming fair for a cold October day. Also good toasties and soup. Great for light bites at lunch, and cooked to order.

Stopped off here for a quick bite of lunch, and so pleased to say it was still pretty much as before from years ago.We had toasties, perfectly fine and filling and on the menu listed Ice Cream Floats, which I have not had one since a child, so fabulous to taste one again. A joy to relive.Would recommend for a quick bite to any weary traveller.

Just don't go here. The ciabattas were awful. Overcooked crispy haggis. Only warm and cheese half melted. The coleslaw.....massive chunks of cabbage. The side salad, overly sweet dressing ..think it was honey and mustard. The tortillas on the side, massive grease bombs with weird seasoning.Coffee was good at least

I had a lovely moist slice of the farmhouse cake, and the owner gave me the secret to achieving moist fruit cakes. My wife had the cheese on toast, which used two cheeses and made a delicious meal. Very friendly husband and wife team run the cafe, which has a quirky Charlie Chaplin link (hence the name).

We all had Sunday lunch (£22), service was good and waitress was friendly. However the Roast dinner was lukewarm, the beef was far from tender and the Yorkshire pud was clearly reheated and very greasy. The bar wasn’t able to provide many of the beers/lagers on tap. Altogether a very disappointing visit. We were here last year and I still remember The Venison I had. Clearly new management/chef. Definitely give it a miss.

No food on offer other than crisps, ice cream and a meagre offering of cake, shocked as we were there for a 1pm show and had travelled over an hour thinking we would be fine for lunch at the theatre. Staff were fine, no hint of getting things done in a timely fashion and not much interaction with customers. Decor is depressing, such a big space makes it cold and echoey. Just no atmosphere whatsoever. Very disappointed and won't be back.

I've checked into the premier inn for 3 nights to find out the beefeater is closed for food and drink because all the staff have walked out due to soon be opening there own in house Thyme restaurant so there is only staff there in the morning to cook breakfast....yet nothing is on the website about it being closed !!!! I would of booked into another hotel if I had know 🙈🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
