Really great coffee and friendly staff

I've drank hundreds of Mocha's in my life but sadly this one was just really odd tasting, fruity?? I don't want to leave you a low review as the staff were lovely, but I couldn't even finish my drink, which was quite expensive.

Subjectively the best coffee I've ever had; try the pour over, you will not be disappointed. Nice to see knowledgeable and passionate staff as well.

Grade A coffee. Seriously good. Staff were friendly and efficient. Eggs benedict was about as good as I've had. Ask for chilli oil on the side, you know it makes sense. Really super little venue, sad I don't live locally.

Hands down the best coffee I’ve ever had. Service is perfect, food is delicious and fairly priced, the coffee is a statement in itself. Sometimes the wait can be a little Long but is normally very fast, 100% worth the wait! Highly recommend the Mocha and Hot Chocolate!

Waited 20 minutes for a coffee, had to remind them of the order, not even an apology. Not the first time either.

Walked in for a takeout coffee. Told it would be a 10minute wait - despite 8 staff. The shop wasn’t even busy. A shame as the food and atmosphere is usually good! Just let down by inefficient staff. Went elsewhere

I’d so been looking forward to coming here as I’d heard great things, but unfortunately found it to be a disappointment. It’s not clear when you walk in whether you’re supposed to find your own table or wait to be seated so there was a huddle of confused people. Luckily we only had to wait a few minutes for a table, but when we ordered they said it would be about a 20 minute wait for food. So we waited, and waited, and seen people who came in after us eating, and waited…after 45 minutes we had to go up and ask where our food was. Then it turned up within 2 minutes! We’d ordered one smashed avocado on toast (which was okay, but pretty tasteless) and one eggs royale with smoked salmon. The eggs were luke warm at best and when I asked the waitress if our order had been sat waiting she said no it has just been cooked fresh. My guess is the kitchen cooked it and someone forgot to bring it us because it was so busy. They took the order back and cooked it fresh, and when they brought it back they said it was normal for it to not be hot because of the smoked salmon, but this time the eggs were hot so I definitely think they forgot to bring us our food the first time. The eggs royale was nice in the end, but for me the wait time was off putting, it was far too busy/noisy & there were too many people with dogs inside. I know so many cafes allow it now, but I think it’s really unhygienic and inconsiderate for people who have a phobia of dogs.

The coffee shop is one of the cosiest places in Chester for a brew and sweet treat. The staff are fantastic, very professional and friendly. I'd visit them again - they have gluten-free sweets, which is very important for me. They have my high recommend.

After coming back from a month travelling in Japan, I was yearning for some quality coffee, food but especially the customer service. As a Londoner, that’s not been the case so far. But I’m glad to have discovered this incredible cafe during my short stay in Chester. All the staff members are friendly and welcoming. The decor and cleanliness is 10/10. And you just have to check out the photos to see the quality of the coffee and food. I don’t have a bad word to say. Thanks!

Charming location, quality modern cafe vibe.

What a delightful coffee shop, housed in an atmospheric vaulted building. The vibe here is trendy; the furnishings are sleek and minimalist, and the background music is contemporary, without being too noisy or overpowering! I was welcomed warmly by the friendly barista and asked for some recommendations, which she was happy to give. I ordered a batch brew coffee to drink which was particularly tasty. It was quite a 'floral' coffee; a smooth and fruity offering. To eat, I opted for the Boston beans on sourdough with a side of avocado. This was such a delicious dish – I didn't want it to end! Opting for the avocado added a further freshness to the meal, but I would have been satisfied with just the beans on toast. All in all, a wonderful experience in a cool café in the heart of Chester. Fantastic coffee and fantastic treats. Only downside is the high beam right across the entrance so if you’re tall like me, you nearly hit your head and the waitress gives you a funny look. Cash not accepted

On our way to a family funeral, we popped into Chalk at 8am, door open, music playing, website staying OPEN- for a much needed coffee and brunch, but were told by the man that they were not ready yet, needed to put chairs outside so would we mind leaving. Astounded at the poor customer service- “morning, sorry we aren’t quite ready, but sit there and we will be with you in a minute” would’ve been far kinder. So, Costa it was. Thanks guys.

This has become my place of choice for coffee in central Chester. Large comfortable cafe with window seats you can watch people go by and most importantly tasty coffee.

Popped in during a weekend away. One of the nicest cappuccinos and croissants I've had. Lovely space and friendly staff too. Would definitely go back if there again and try the bigger menu offerings.

I highly recommend a visit for breakfast, the poached eggs were perfectly done, in fact all the items that we ordered, for the 5 of us, were all delicious, well cooked and expertly presented.

The coffee and service was good. I thought the music was a little loud, though. There are outlets on the long benches at the back, and there were a few people working with their laptops there.

Great atmosphere, and sweet music in the background. Smashed Avocado; is a game changer! Americano; sour coffee is not my type, if you don't like sour coffee I would suggest you go with other options. It was a bit warm too.

My daughter and I popped in for a coffee on her recommendation, as she and her girlfriend call in regularly themselves. I can absolutely see why, the service was fantastic and the coffee is excellent. I'll definitely be bringing my partner here and recommending to all of my friends

A beautiful coffee shop in the heart of Chester. The coffee is amazing, the staff are wonderful and the coffee shop itself is very nice, nice modern interior, very clean. Well worth a stop, support this local business, the coffee is so much better than your mainstream coffee shops.

I’m very picky, there isn’t many establishments I would give 5 Stars (for example I went to Miller & Carter in Chester last night and that was 2 stars, DONT GO) but this place is great. Atmosphere, food and coffee is all top notch. I would recommend this place to everyone I know. You won’t be disappointed. One thing I would say is it’s quite pricey, If you start adding sides on your food then it’s £3 a pop. BUT, regardless of price I still leave feeling happy.

Genuinely the best smashed avocado sourdough I've ever had, the chive oil really elevated it. Delicious oat iced latte and such a beautiful interior. Could easily stay there all day! Will definitely be returning.

The coffee is very tasty and the cakes are nice too. It's stylish with the exposed brickworks, clean, the staff is friendly too. Superb.

A lovely place with a great vibe!

The coffee used is beautifully roasted so you can taste all the notes (something I’m sure all other coffee snobs appreciate). The milk is perfectly steamed and stretched for beautiful latte art - hats off to the baristas for being able to do this - it’s not easy! If there is ever a question for the coffee, it’s worth the wait for the exceptional taste and presentation. My husband had the breakfast muffin which he said tasted legendary. The service from everyone is consistently lovely and welcoming. I love the urban, minimalist decor. Very grounding (lol no pun intended). We always come here whenever we visit Chester.

Lovely atmosphere, very quirky. My husband said his coffee was lovely, my tea however was quite disappointing not a lot of taste to it. I should have mentioned it at the time but I thought it was just me, it was only after my son said the same. Loved the fact you can help yourself to water and it is dog friendly. Staff were very helpful and friendly.

Lovely little coffee shop with friendly staff and good coffee and tea. Dog friendly. I didnt sample the cakes, but they looked yummy. Staff were fab, especially when my dog started crying because I'd left her with my partner. They came over to give her a fuss and biscuits!

Been here loads and today they wouldn't honour 20 loyalty stamps they'd given me as "they don't do them any more" not acceptable in my book. Will be using the many other options in chester from now on

This is my favourite Coffee shop in the north west. The staff are friendly, the service great, and most important of all the coffee and cakes are brilliant. They also have bags of coffee that they will grind to your specification (i.e, suitable for an Aeropress) and give you a free cup of coffee at the same time.

The coffee is really good here, and the atmosphere is lovely. Not the best avo toast I’ve had, and I wish the portion was bigger for the cost.

This place doesn't need any recommendations, the number of people coming in at lunchtime speaks for itself. I’ve visited Chalk on many a weekday lunchtime and sometimes Saturday morning. First thing to say: it’s lovely and warm in there. The low brick ceiling really keeps the heat in, so it’s the place to be during the energy crisis! I had a lovely cinnamon swirl pastry, but many people were having a cooked brunch. I recommend the Dragon Well green tea, which I think is something special. It has a lovely light flavour and is served in lightweight porcelain, which perfectly compliments its delicacy. The staff are all highly organised: finding tables for people, waiting on, making sure everyone is catered for, and all with a friendly smile. Everyone is welcome in Chalk, there is quite an age range in there. I met the former owner of my son’s nursery (70 years old); and a woman next to me had a baby with her. There were also two well-behaved dogs!

Lovely Coffee shop, small selection of sandwiches, pastries and cakes. Clean and spacious, staff friendly and pleasant.

I ordered the Welsh rarebit, which was aweful. The rarebit was so thick and luke warm. I definitely will not be ordering again. Chalk is another business that also no longer accepts cash.

Had a nice lunch here with friends. Quite busy when we arrived at 12, but only waited 10mins for a table. A warm atmosphere, great service and lovely food - we got poached eggs on Sourdough and Brioche French Toast. Freshly made cakes and tasty coffee with oat milk as an alternative. A modern classy interior. Some entertainment for us as the place is dog-friendly 🐶

Ordered 2 Anericanos with hot milk on side. Small cup, coffee bitter & strong and just warm. Asked for hot water which was also warm! Lovely gentleman who served us made 2 fresh cups with one shot of coffee this time which was better BUT still only warm! He explained only served at 65% so as not to burn lips or scald…not much chance of that! Please serve hot coffee & put notice up that coffee is hot handle & drink carefully as no come back if accident happens. Plenty of good coffee shops in Chester so I won’t be returning sorry:(

Nice little semi recessed cafe with friendly staff, a welcoming cosy atmosphere and above all...great coffee!! Their guest coffees are always interesting and can find a jem.

First visit for lunch. Waited a short time for a table as full when we arrived, very popular at peak times. Nice menu, and the food was quick to arrive. Great value and a lovely atmosphere.

Went Sunday afternoon. Coffee took 15 minutes. Kitchen temporarily closed so no food. Coffee was good but experience very disappointing. Wish we had gone to Nero.

Great food and service but don’t wear a nice item of clothing when sat on the black chairs inside. I now have paint on my beige £150 jacket which hasn’t come out in the wash. Thanks! 🙂

One of the nicest coffees in Chester, ordered a flat white good level of aroma with a rich deeper aftertaste. Staff were lovely and thought has been put into the atmosphere and decor of this coffee shop that can be noticed even into the glassware and cutlery choices.

Called at this lovely little coffee shop whilst killing time before checking in to our accommodation. As we had not had breakfast we decided to share a caramel slice for a little bit of a sugar rush after a night on the town and it just hit the spot. The coffee was 10/10 and so was the hot chocolate according to my husband. We sat outside as it's on a nice little street and watched the world go by. I always try to support a local place rather than one of the big chains.

Always love Chalk. I never drink the house coffee as u find it very flat tasting. Always get the guest coffee - they Always choose an array of roasters to highlight. I would love to see more local roasters in there. Ancoats, Kickback Coffee, Heart and Graft etc.

We had a day pottering around Chester and found Chalk at the top of Watergate Street. The place has a good vibe and is very busy. We found a table and went to the counter to order and pay. The food and drink did not take long to arrive, the rarebit was very taste and we enjoyed our Hazelnut Oat Latte.
