Castle Cafe in Denbighshire

Called in for coffee and cake whilst on holiday, enjoyed it so much we booked for lunch a few days later. Food was excellent, fresh and tasty, great menu. Friendly staff and dog friendly. Will be back next time we are in, or near ,Rhuddlan and highly recommend to anyone thinking of a visit.

I had a lovely Prawn and Avicado super salad. It was delicious. I enjoyed a nice pot of tea afterwards. Thank you Emma and your waitress was very pleasant too.

Friends took us to this delightful little cafe. I ordered the prawn and Avacado salad. Amazing variety of items in the salad and so fresh. I loved the raw courgette, the carrot and the Avacado was perfectly ripe

Lovely friendly Cafe with great choice of food and beverages. I would recommend anyone who visits Rhuddlan Castle or just Rhuddlan to make a visit.

Very impressed freshly prepared tasty food. Fantastic service& according to my husband the best scones he’s ever had! We returned two days later for another meal, scone & some scones to take away! Highly recommend a visit Wonderful cafe & very dog friendly 🥰

I recently met up with Friends whilst on a little break in Rhuddlan and we visited The Old Crown! It was beautiful, the 3 of us had different meals and all agreed it was absolutely faultless! Everything freshly prepared to order, the place is clean and quaint and Emma the owner was lovely and friendly! Will definitely return on my next trip to Wales xxx

The old crown is simply the best food around. I’ve never had anything that wasn’t delicious, and I’ve had quite a lot of the menu!😂 It’s always a warm welcome into a lovely cosy environment, and Emma pours a lot of love into her food. The cafe itself is a little old stone building, so be sure to book, as it’s always very busy and there’s not loads of room… definitely worth a trip, even if it’s just for a coffee and cake or a takeaway, but I’d recommend trying one of the amazing salads!

I have been coming to the Old Crown for about 6 years now. The Cafe is always spotlessly clean and Emma and her staff always go out of their way to make every experience special. Other than the fact that the food is always cooked to perfection every time, Emma is happy to cater for any dietary requirements I may have. I’m on a low salt no meat diet at the moment and Emma always rustles up something spectacular that no matter how much I try, I can never recreate myself at home! I absolutely recommend this lovely little cafe to anyone that’s in the area looking for fresh, really good home cooked food.

Had a lovely brunch here recently. The food is home cooked and the coffee is also good. My friend had a (build your own) breakfast and I had the salmon and Poached egg muffin (both excellent) I would have liked to have seen 2 poached eggs on this dish though as it seemed quite small with just one 🥚. The service here is excellent and you can see they have a strong local following so booking is advised. My only gripe would be that the ventilation isn't great and it's very smokey inside from the kitchen, my clothes smelt of cooking all afternoon. This could be remedied by opening windows more or improving the kitchen ventilation. All in all a lovely little place and I would definitely return.

We live locally and have many times walked past and promised ourselves to pop in one day as the food always looks and smells delicious. Today we finally found out for ourselves just how good the food and service is. My wife said it was the best salad she had ever had, and I had what can only be described as one of the tastiest omelettes I’ve ever enjoyed. We received a lovely welcome and fantastic service, you couldn’t ask for more. This was our first , but won’t be the last visit we make. Mike & Eva

Who knew that healthy food could be so delicious! I had the Spanish omelette with the superfood salad and it was absolutely lovely. The staff were really helpful too and were happy to change the dish to suit my requirements. I live fairly locally and will be making this my 'go to' restaurant whenever I go out for lunch. A brilliant find!

We live locally and have never been here before we will be back.We called on spec to find such lovely food cooks very well and presented in a very well thought out way. Slinky breakfast with an added sausage was excellent and the toast to die for. The mushrooms with cheese on toast with your baking as well but very good indeed. I really don’t know why we haven’t been before but glad we did today. Well done Emma and crew.

Lovely restaurant with beautifully presented food. However having to wait 25 minutes for two sandwiches is in my opinion too long. I am aware food is prepared to order but when I asked were we going to have to wait much longer the response I received was appalling. The woman came out with a plate in a really confrontational manner and told me in no uncertain terms that food is cooked to order and if I wanted ready made, plastic wrapped sandwiches to go elsewhere. Only 3 meals were brought out after I ordered so the delay was excessive. . It was my first visit and my last. I will indeed go elsewhere.

Great food, Superb!! We've always loved visiting The Old Crown Food and the quality never fails. It is very important to book ahead to avoid disappointment, although there are few days when walk-ins may be possible. You can also order take aways, the salads are delicious if you need a healthy lunch on the go. This place is a must try. You wouldn't regret it.

We stopped off for brunch this morning after a recommendation online. I ordered the Spanish omelette with salad and it was the best one I’ve ever had! The salad was packed with all sorts of superfoods and it was very tasty. Scones were excellent served with generous helping of butter, jam and cream and were fresh out the oven that morning. Service was excellent too! Very good find… safe to say we will definitely be returning!

What a great find. The food was perfect and the staff are lovely. I had poached eggs on toast, the best poached eggs I’ve ever had and the bread was delicious. My husband had the slinky breakfast and couldn’t fault it. I also tried the Belfast brew (tea) which was lovely. Just wish we didn’t live an hour away because we would come here more often, but will definitely return.

We have been meaning to visit The Old Crown since it opened and I’m embarrassed to say that we only got round to this today (I am really kicking myself for not going sooner!!!). We ordered the spanish omelette and the Vietnamese prawn noodle super salad to take away and both were absolutely delicious. The salads are jam packed with a wide variety of good quality, healthy ingredients, meaning every mouthful is a taste sensation. They are also really filling too. Another massive plus is that everything is sent out in compostable packaging too, so no feeling bad about horrible plastic takeaway containers :-)We are now desperate to try out the other wonderful items on the menu, so I suspect this is going to become a regular treat for us. Called To Emma's Cafe ( have been many times) after a hospital visit. Didn't know what to expect (in terms of Covid changes etc) Felt very relaxed and satisfied with the way things were being organised, which to me is key under the circumstances.My daughter had the Super Food Salad, with Mackerel & Feta, I fancied the Jacket Potato with Tuna & Capers. Both delicious and beautifully presented (as always). I had a chocolate brownie with choc ice cream and Beth had a homemade scone with butter, jam and cream, both gorgeous. There was a lovely atmosphere and the service was second to none, excellent experienced staff, warm, friendly & efficient. Coffee & Tea to finish. My Granddaughter was with us too (seven months old) and she was made to feel very welcome. Don't think you can ever fully relax with a baby.It's obvious that Emma is passionate about food and probably spends a great deal of time I am sure, sourcing, planning and preparing tasty, natural mouth watering food. Her eye for colour and choice of ingredients is outstanding.It's not easy doing that at the best of times and especially during this awful period. Will call again, whenever in the area. We were ready to pass by as, when looking at the name, we thought it was a pub.However, we are glad we looked in through the windows to see that it was a cosy little coffee shop. We sat outside on one of the benches as it was a lovely warm day and were served there with coffee and cake. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his fruit scone, jam and fresh cream. I had a massive piece of Victoria Sponge which was very moist and tasty. However, I do prefer my Victoria Sponge to be filled with the old fashioned recipe of buttercream icing. Very friendly service.

We were determined to try out this place during our fabulous stay in Rhuddlan, as it had great reviews on here and from the place we were staying at. Breakfast was first and it was perfect! Just what we needed before going on a bike ride. Whilst looking at the menu, we decided that we had to try more and ordered a take out sandwich and salad for the following day for us to have on our journey home. Collection was straight forward and very well organised (Covid rules adhered to by the ‘Old Crown’ perfectly) and cake was also purchased! We have just stopped midway home to have our ‘take out’ and the food was absolutely amazing! I have never had such a tasty salad - chicken, bacon and feta - thank you . We are planning to return on another getaway and will definitely be visiting this gem of a place again. Sam & Andy.

Brilliant from start to finish. From the super easy process for takeaway, the friendly customer service, and finally the delicious food, this is easily one of the best cafés in North Wales.

Had a meal from the Old Crown on 24th of March. Like all cafes they have closed their doors in line with current restrictions and are now providing a takeaway serviceWe have used the cafe in the past and always enjoyed our visits and the fare on offer. Our meal this week was chicken, bacon and feta with a superb mixed salad which the owner created to suit my wife's special dietary needs. We made it a special meal in with a bottle of bubbly, a date night as we had not left the house for nearly 2 weeks. We really enjoyed the food and the occasion. Our thanks to Emma the owner for being there in these challenging times and creating our dinner. If you want a nice meal phone and orginise collecting from the Old Crown. Just phone from outside when collecting and Emma will bring it out and leave it on the bench outside so no need for physical contact; pay on ordering. We have ordered a weekly meal for the next 12 weeks and will continue to use it beyond then. If you can't get there yourself because of isolating, send a taxi. There is a menu on line.Thanks again

Another cracking place to eat small in size but delivers on food quality. A healthy menu and very tasty. All homemade, and licensed if you fancy a glass of wine with your lunch.

We thought we'd check them out as we liked their food ethics and we weren't disappointed. Very nice welcome and tasty food.

Called in at The Old Crown on a Friday for lunch. It’s been a while since our last visit. Greeted by the very friendly and lovely owners. Had the special. Delicious. So was the soup, coffee and cake. All freshly made. Will definitely call in again next time we are in the area. Give this place a try. You will not be disappointed.

We have eaten at numerous resturants in Wales, in the USA and in Greece over the last 4 weeks. The food here is the best we have had by a long way. Fresh home made meals and sandwiches with a warm and friendly welcome. Worth a visit to try the poached eggs on muffins.

First time at the Old Crown last nonth and it most certainly won't the last. Just dropped in and had afternoon tea, nothing was too much trouble. If your looking for someone were to eat, this is a must.

We have visited here today. Nothing was too much trouble catering for a party of 5 people ranging from 3 years old to 82 years old!! The food was Amazing (taste was amazing at each & every bite!). The service was incredible & all in all the value is great. Can’t wait to go again. The backdrop of Rhuddlan Castle is just stunning. Thank You Emma & Lynsey from The Weedman Gang x

Visited castle ( just a few yards away!) and then called in for lunch. A delicious range of home-made cakes plus freshly prepared soups, sandwiches, salads etc. We had one of the two soups of the day on offer and then super-food salads (checken and salmon/mackerel) (huge portions and with very many ingredients!) Both tasted lovely and served by the very friendly and cheerful staff. We would certainly recommend. Only caveat is that anyone wanting to visit would be wise to BOOK IN ADVANCE, as the number of places in the cafe is limited plus they tend to run out of ingredients (prawns in my case) if business is very brisk. You can book via the Facebook page but TELEPHONING is strongly recommended instead.

First experience of visiting this beautiful cafe and had an amazing chicken, bacon and feta salad which had an explosion of different tastes. Staff are so friendly and welcoming. Will be back next time I visit North Wales.

Home cooked food made to order. So don’t be in a hurry, the wait wasn’t too long but absolutely fantastic quality. Owner clearly has a passion for food. Excellent service.

We went for lunch at the Old Crown, the salads were lovely and fresh, delicious, and very nicely presented. It's clear how much care is taken to make each plate of food just right. The service was friendly and we were made to feel very welcome. I would definitely recommend this little gem of a place.

We have visited here a few times now and must say living in Trelawnyd it is our favourite place for lunch! It’s friendly and the offering is superb!! Lovely fresh ingredients abound and the avocado on sour bread open sandwiches are fab as is( I’m told the Pea Soup!) Super Food Salad!! I thoroughly enjoyed my Vietnamese salad too!!

We recently visited The Old Crown for lunch. I had a wonderful Bacon, Chicken and cheese Super Salad. Full of healthy food. Emma and her staff are very attentive and couldn’t do enough to to keep us happy .

There is always a warm friendly atmosphere, and the food is always fresh and cooked to perfection using local produce. You can tell a lot of thought and effort goes into every dish to make it unique and always tasty.

I was here a few weeks ago.. I had the most loveliest of lunches and will be back.. I know the Owners but didnt let on that I knew them.. Maybe my next visit I will ..

Visited this lovely cafe today with my husband for the first time, we both had a salad, Devine, lovely fix of fresh delicious ingredients. The owner is very friendly and made us feel welcome and at ease. I can’t wait to visit again. I will definitely be recommending this lovely gem to others.

I visited here on 3 occasions and each time was great. The cafe is so inviting, lovely decor and a warm atmosphere, mainly due to the fantastic staff and owner. They are so welcoming and attentive. The food is just wonderful, the salads really are 'super' everything I had was just so tasty , well prepared and presented. I just can't rate this place highly enough it's an absolute gem.

We book regularly when we have a birthday etc. Food is all cooked to order and is excellent. The omelettes are best ever and so tasty accompanied by an unusual salad. Service always pleasant and friendly.

Made to feel very welcome with Springer Spaniel. Fantastic homemade soups and sandwich with salad. Very welcoming and friendly team. Highly recommend. Walk to castle and it’s on your right.

Visited today for lunch, what a lovely, friendly little cafe, serving fresh, home-made food! Everything on the menu looked amazing I had trouble choosing, decided on a sandwich and it was delicious, cane with lovely salad and coleslaw! Absolutely spot on! Will return thank you!

We saw this little cafe had a super rating on here so thought we would give it a try. We weren't disappointed as the food was amazing. I had a jacket potato and my partner had the Spanish omelette. Both came with a delicious salad which really made the meal. The owner was lovely and very sociable with the customers. Can't wait to visit again later in the year.

Visited for breakfast and sat in window looking towards the castle, excellent choice on the menu. The food was lovely and high quality, even a little treat for our dog.

1st time visit, girls were very welcoming & nothing was to much trouble, our breakfasts were wonderful, every thing is freshly cooked & you can customise your meal to your own liking, the cafe itself is very quaint & the atmosphere is very friendly, will definitely be going back & would thoroughly recommend giving it a try.

Recent visit with a friend 1st time been here, food was amazing all fresh produce cooked daily! Owners have great customer service and very welcoming! Perfect location looking on the old castle.. p.s the homemade lemon cake is to die for....thankyou the old crown I'll be back soon...

Went for lunch. Good choice of food but not too big which gave you confidence that it was all all home cooked. Spectacular food all round. We sat at the window with a great view of the castle. I would imagine parking is a problem so work that out before you come so as not to miss out.

A gem! Who would have thought down a side street, it was packed out and a good job the friend had reserved a table. The two egg omelette of feta cheese, peas, lentils and mint was refreshing, The salad was exciting too! Described by the owner as sexy salad Oh yes it was! I only hope when we go back, as yes we will, that it has the same effect on our appetites! Lovely 5 *

The food was amazing. My friend is a vegan and the owner was able to suggest a gorgeous Vietnamese salad bowl which she adjusted to ensure it was vegan. My sandwich was gorgeous. The salad and sandwich were fresh and different,everything was top quality. Really impressed with the food and the staff were so helpful as we had to rush off before returning for our food!

We visited Rhuddlan and had a good walk around the castle then popped into this little cafè for a drink and a bit of something to eat. We all ordered the sausage & mash with onion gravy & red cabbage, coffees snd a pot of tea.

I am assuming that this is the amazing little cafe right opposite the castle called the old crown at the castle, which I visited today with friends and had the most amazing breakfast/brunch, great menu and attentive friendly service, bought cakes and scones to eat later. Ps great coffee as well, loved it and will definitely call in again when in the area.

Welcoming and hearty yet sophisticated food. The salads are amazing and delicious. Likewise the cakes are divine too. Able to cater for allergies and intolerances and excellent service. I can't praise this cafe enough, it is excellent! Dog friendly too 😊
