Outstanding Food & Customer Service at Small Plates. A Superb, cosy & friendly place to go for amazing food.

Plates were so small I couldn’t see them

Delicious food - the beef brisket and risotto are highly recommended. Lovely service and all at a reasonable price.

We had a lovely take away meal, I cannot review on the atmosphere as we did not eat inside, but I am sure it will be buzzing. Mum and I used to go to On The Hill bistro a few doors up, Small Plates is run by the same nice couple who owned that Imogen and her husband Rowan. It was always good there and great atmosphere, we were so sad when it closed about the time of lock down, we loved rustic homely Bistros.

100% recommended! Very good service and atmosphere and, choose any dish on the menu and you won't go wrong. The best thing is to order a starter and two dishes. Everything is great!

The foods were amazing! We were so stuffed after the meals. We will definitely go back again. The pork bites were so tender and crispy. Fishes tastes fresh everything were perfect!

I never normally leave reviews but this place is exceptional. The food was superb. I’m often left underwhelmed by desserts but this place has the best dessert I’ve had in a very long time. 10/10.

Such a wonderful restaurant, recommended by our airbnb host! We went at lunchtime yesterday and had a bread sharing board & the lunchtime deal 1X nibble plate and 2X small plates each - which was fantastic. They also have gluten free options. Lady who served us was really kind and attentive service, we would love to come back here in the future🥰 no faults!!

This is the cutest little restaurant with an amazing atmosphere and great service. The dining room is gorgeous and very intimate, and the folks there were incredibly friendly and helpful! Our waitress even wrote down some recommendations for us since we mentioned we were on Holiday! The food was exquisite, its tapas style and I feel like each dish we tried was very creative and unique… not to mention delicious.

Who would have thought you'd find a gem like this on a back street in a place like Ruthin?!! Amazing. Atmosphere, service and flavour awesome! Even the rather bizarre mix of Asian and Mediterranean dishes somehow seems to add to the experience. Thank you.

Divine choice of small plates, staff were so fabulously helpful with their suggestions and the restaurant atmosphere relaxed, yet with a continental sophistication about it. Our dog was made welcome and the staff are dog friendly - delicious food, good wine list, great evening!

This restaurant is cosy and seems to have a good ambience. The meal was a birthday present from family. It didn’t disappoint. The pulled beef was delicious and my husband really enjoyed his prawn dish. The desert was so good . Most light and tasty cakes.presented so nicely.. There was no cost for us as it was a present, but really the prices were excellent for that standard of fine dining. We will be going there again.

Service wasn't very attentive, and the food was lacklustre seeming more like a reheated supermarket meal. Disappointed considering how good it used to be. No longer value for money. Very small portions given the prices.

Absoloutely great place... food is divine, staff and ambience amazing.

It's one of the best places we've eaten in a while. Friendly helpful staff and a fantastic menu full of fresh, amazing flavours and textures .The chefs are amazing, as are the front of house staff. Some beautiful dishes ,Asian platters was full of different flavours and textures . Foccacia breads are homemade and the truffle butter to die for. Cauliflower platter was amazing, especially the Cauliflower and smoked cheddar croquettes. Moroccan lamb was a delight. Cocktails were great, and the service was 2nd to none even changing the Coke in the long island ice tea for pineapple juice as I don't like Coke. New cocktail invented " the long island paradise iced tea " we decided to call it . Fantastic venue, and you'd be bonkers not try it ( this from a chef of 40 + yrs ,I loved everything we had

This small restaurant is a great place to share some food or create your own taster menu. The serving sizes.are small as the name gives away. But with a starter, a couple of choices from the mains and a selection of deserts to choose from, you won't leave hungry. This was our second visit and both have been a great meal with friendly staff who are happy to help with menu options. For those ordering before 7pm there is deal for one starter (nibble) and 2 small plates for £20. Which is what they recommend for one person. There are some great drinks and cocktails on offer too. We enjoyed a long island ice tea with our meal . Very well made.

A very special experience. This food is next level and both myself and my friend have never come across such an amazing menu. Each plate had a uniqueness to it and we can’t wait to hand over more money to this business. Insane!!

The best tapas restaurant I have ever been to! The food was spectacular - the flavours were just amazing with all of the dishes we chose. Lovely ambience and the staff were all fabulous. Such a big choice of cocktails as well! We will come back to Ruthin again - just for Small Plates, and work our visit around coming here again!

Absolutely wonderful lunch with my friend. The food is delicious, the service is excellent, and the restaurant itself is so beautiful. I would highly recommend it. The toilets are situated down a small flight of stairs.

This restaurant is one of the best I have ever visited, period. The atmosphere, decor, staff, food and beverages were all faultless - with the food being the star of the show, Small Plates is nothing less than absolutely amazing. This is definitely the first of many visits for us.

A fantastic and unexpected spontaneous gastric experience. Thoroughly recommend. We'll be definately be back. Don't be put off the the food hygine rating. Its completely misleading and unhelpful. The place is spotless and standard of hygiene is high. As a food producer ourselves that have been through inspctions, it makes no sense. Yes, its very cosy and the coffee machine is at the top of the stairs and the kitchen is in the basement and everything has to be brought up the stairs but no way did we feel thst food hygiene was compromised. The Authorities need to take a more pragmatic approach and support a local buisness thsts providing an unique experience to a very high standard.

. The last time I ate this well, I was in France! Today in Small Plates in Upper Clwyd St, I gave myself a real treat. I began with Scallops in Langoustine bisque, followed that with Garlic King Prawns on a sizzler, then Asian Duo of Duck. To finish off, I had the Churros with cinnamon and a chocolate sauce. I must warn you that these crispy fingers would get themselves arrested in Spain under the Trades Description Act, as they bear no ressemblance to real Spanish churros. But I have had them before, and already knew that they are delectable, delicious, and delightful. I was tempted to order another helping of churros, but I wouldn't have been able to eat another inch of the crispy, cinammony fingers. My three earlier courses were all just as wonderful. Freshly cooked, an amazing combination of textures and flavourings in each dish, each time I was sorry when I finished. I would have licked the (small) plates they were served on, but thought the other customers might disapprove. ☺️ The opening hours are: Lunch, Wed - Sat Evenings, Tues - Sat Give yourself a treat, you're worth it! .

Tried first to go on a Friday at noon but it was booked. Was able to make reservations for Saturday at noon the morning of. Very professional and attentive service (they would peek in to know when to prepare the next set of plates). Excellent variety on the menu. Everything we tried was hot and beautifully presented. Our favorite dish was the mushroom and pea arancini nibbles and bread board (if you like truffle flavor). Also tried the fish fritter, duck and monkfish. Will be back to try the churros and shrimp. Michelin quality.

This little gem was highly recommended to us for our visit to Ruthin. We were going to try a few different places, but after an amazing first night we decided to go back for a second. We each had a starter (nibbles) and two main dishes. Each was delicious and served by the friendly staff. They also remembered what we had from the first night, which was impressive. The restaurant is tucked away from the main road with lovely views of the Welsh hills in the distance. Inside the restaurant is really cosy with comfortable seats perfect lighting. If you visit the area or stop at the castle, I can't recommend Small Plates enough.

Exquisite food. We booked this restaurant after reading many reviews and we were not disappointed. The range and diversity of dishes on offer is impressive, and the lunchtime special at £19.50 is excellent value. It's such a shame it is 5 hours from where we live.

These are super TINY plates other than the dessert so be warned. I eat tapas everywhere I go and the price for the plates is too much for the food you receive. Yes the quality is decent, but I wouldn't visit again because me and my dinner guests were still hungry after eating here. I also had no idea that this place has a one star food hygiene rating- I only found out after our visit.That does not fill me with confidence and I couldn't go back until this has improved. The desserts were the best part and generous in comparison to the rest of the plates and, they cater pretty well for gluten free customers. Service could have been more friendly - the front of manager (blonde female) was pretty abrupt, but to her credit, she was at least efficient. Between 4 of us (3 glasses of wine, 2 coffees, and 13 small plates in total) the bill came to £160 which I actually think is scandalous. We had an okay time but, things would definitely have to improve before we ventured here again..shame.

We were staying at Ruthin Castle and decided to venture out for dinner on our 2nd night. Found this place on Google and booked a table, which was just as well, as even on a rainy Wednesday evening in August, they were full. The food was different to the ‘usual tapas’ and portions were just right. Vegetarian options for mains were good, but limited for dessert. Good selection of wine and soft drinks. Would definitely dine here again.

Fantastic menu and attentive service

If you think you've had great tapas then visit here. You'll realise that every other small plate you've ever had, even in Spain, or well known tapas restaurants in major cities don't compare to the thought and care that's gone into the menu in this delightful restaurant. They have a tiny kitchen but the food they produce in this restaurant is amazing. Coupled with delightful attentive service and a great wine selection makes this my go to tapas restaurant. I live in Manchester and can't wait to travel here again to eat at Small Plates. Thank you

Top draw! fantastic! service cocktails & food oustanding! wow them prawns! unreall! wiah i wasnt such a greedy fcker with the mains couldnt squeeze a desert in. 10000% recomend.. could of went to berties at the castle.. definately made the right choice!

Visited today for my husbands birthday what a lovely find been once before and was not disappointed on my second visit everything was lovely especially the scallop and prawn dish. Hubbie very impressed definitely be back!

Kirsty and Claire give us super stellar service as soon as we walked through the door up until we were heading home. We had travelled to explore Wales, and after travelling a lot I will state each dish was up to an international standard of perfection. What an absolute gem. The atmosphere was perfect for a variety of occasions, thanks to everything from decor to decorum. Will be travelling back to come again.

Food is very good but overall could be a bit better. Have been a few times but the wait between courses on our latest visit was ridiculous. Around 45 minutes. One feels they may have taken to much on but it's the only decent place in Ruthin

We had a lovely meal here, consisting of a bread option, two nibbles, and 4 small plates between the two of us, and a mocktail each. Every single item was a culinary delight in it's own right. The menu is impressively diverse! The restaurant itself is cosy and nicely styled, and we felt we had privacy, and it wasn't noisy. Superb place in every way and I'd thoroughly recommend it and look forward to going back.

What a find! The plates I chose were both really delicious (chicken with Thai flavours and taste of India vegetarian). Outstanding quality food and attention to detail. I was just visiting Ruthin so dining alone, and made to feel welcome. Service was friendly and attentive. Wine by the glass was very good too.

Excellent meal, every single thing was freshly cooked to order and quite delicious. I was hesitant about ordering the churros (I should say "churros") for pud, as I am very familiar with the real thing. 😅 However, I am so glad that I did as they were wonderful, although totally unlike any churros ever known South of the Pyrenees. Highly recommended.

Me and my partner dined here for his birthday 2 days ago, we where extremely happy with the welcome, the service and the food was out of this world, we shared 3 starters, 3 small plates and a desert which where all amazing and the staff brought out a little ice cream with a candle on for the birthday boy and sang happy birthday. Absolutely beautiful place I highly recommend if your in Ruthin this is the place to dine. Staff where extremely friendly and we really enjoyed the whole experience. 5+ stars from us. Perfect. We will be back

Dined at Small Plates after looking for somewhere to eat that was an afternoon day trip from where we were staying; reading the other reviews it sounded like a good atmosphere and a good selection of food. Our experience did not disappoint! The hosts were very welcoming, attentive but not overly so and the food was delicious. We also loved the decor - warm and informal with cushioned bench seating, leather chairs & dark wood tables. The tapas style ‘Small Plates’ offered a great selection of fish, meat and vegetable options with a select of breads, nibbles and puddings as well. We shared a focaccia, 4 small plates & had a pudding each, which was just right for medium appetites. We would recommend booking for evening service or going for lunch as it was clearly popular!

The food in this place is amazing!!! We shared 6 small plates and could not decide which was the nicest, as they all were amazing. The cocktails were nice too... And we finished the meal off with the orange taster (again, amazing) BOOK OR BE DISAPPOINTED About 10 parties got turned away as they were fully booked on a Thursday evening. If you visit Ruthin, this place is a must to visit!! (We have booked in again before our holiday finishes). Also, very dog friendly!!

I can really recommend this place - the decor is lovely, as are the staff, but the food is absolutely brilliant. Every single plate was delicious: quality ingredients, skillfully and freshly prepared.

Had a fantastic lunch here.... knew nothing about the place and called in without a booking as we liked the look of the menu. So glad we did, best food we had all weekend and we were staying at quite a posh hotel nearby. The food at Small Plates was delicious and beautifully presented. Such a good meal tonight. A lovely menu and really attentive-but not intrusive-service. We loved On the Hill and now we love this venture and The Sorbus Tree where chef Rowan also demonstrates his magic touch.
