Casa Italia in Sunderland

Turned up for table booked for pre-theatre lunch only to find it is now called Salt & Pepper!!! Only taking cash and was almost empty at 1.30. Food was lovely however so hopefully they will get sorted soon!!!

We arrived for a nice meal before a theatre visit at the Sunderland Empire. Allowing an hour and a half should be plenty of time. The restaurant was quite empty when we arrived, perhaps 20 people in, most of whom already eating. Unfortunately, we left after an hour, still waiting for our food to be delivered to our table. We didn’t order anything fancy, 2 pizzas and some potato skins, both of which are usually brought out within a few minutes of ordering. After about 50 minutes of watching people who came in a long time after us get their food, the waiter offered a pathetic “it won’t be long”. At the hour mark and not even an offer of breadsticks or whatever, we chose to leave. We offered to pay for our drinks (soft drinks, so we definitely weren’t drunks who upset the staff), but were told we didn’t have to due to not getting our food. I do not like being critical of any business on trip advisor, as I know people read them and it can affect the business. However, I do not understand how an order can be completely forgotten and then how the customer service can be so bad that the staff seem to deliberately choose to not acknowledge the issue in any way. I suppose this is a lesson in sticking to the reliable 2 or 3 places in Sunderland who always provide good quality food, instead of trying out somewhere different.

Visited here for lunch after a tour of the shops. Had a very warm welcome from the friendly waitress and shown to our table. After being given our menus we ordered our drinks and was left to decide what we were going to order. When our food arrived it was lovely and hot ( pet hate is lukewarm food ). All very tasty and really good portions. No complaints at all, will definitely be returning and recommending to friends and family.

Went for lunch today with my friend. Had a warm welcome when entered the restaurant by the lovely waitress. Ordered our drinks and lunch which were on the specials lunch menu. Food was lovely and hot absolutely no complaints whatsoever. Service was excellent. This was our first visit but will definitely return. Over all a lovely experience.

Booked a table here for Boxing Day as the restaurant we usually go to on Boxing Day was closed. We were really pleased that we did come here because the food was amazing, the best chicken kiev we've ever had in a restaurant and a good, varied menu. We found the prices to be more than reasonable, with a good drinks selection also. We will definitely be coming here again.

Straight to the point - We have just walked out and they lost a table of 6 booking due to rudeness of staff not good. No table booked when we went in person and then a competition was won for a bottle of rose “don’t have it so you can get it” at least £120 lost and never to return

I highly recommend Casa italia,I have been for Sunday lunch which is beautiful and so cheap, I returned last night with friends and the waitress Teresa couldn't have been more helpful, well done Teresa, food was lovely and my friends also said they loved it and would return 👏👏👌

The ambient was amazing, from fine music to amazing dishes. The waitresses were very polite and friendly. We loved our food and the prices were VERY affordable! Definitely coming back! :)

My friend and I were wanting a pre-theatre meal, so as usual I read TripAdvisor reviews of nearby restaurants. This one got good reviews, one even mentioned the calzone pizza was best ever so I booked a table. Waitresses were very pleasant and we were given a window seat. My friend had a Margherita and I had Calzone. They looked OK but were very disappointing. The Calzone was a bit too salty and I usually have to add extra. But the filling was almost entirely sliced raw red onion, not a lot of cheese and wafer thin ham chopped into absolutely tiny pieces. Then I found what looked like finely sliced hot dog, no mention of that in the description! Had this been a "Happy Hour" pizza it would have been bad enough but it was £7.95, outrageous! I was up in Sunderland for a course when a few of us visited this restaurant. The welcome we received was wonderful and made us feel any home. We decided on the 2 course offer and it was fantastic and filling. We definitely recommend this restaurant and will be going back next time I’m up 😍😍😍

I really felt as I was in a restaurant in Italy, the environment quiet and elegant but not posh.. interior design so cute and well cured.. very lovely service even with compliments and the girls assured that everything was fine really nicely.. the food was well done, from starter to main.. only a risotto a bit dry but even there they are been disponible suggesting the request of more cream for the next time, seen that risotto might be so subjective.. I STRONGLY SUGGEST IT, especially for date occasions.

Walked around Sunderland on a cold October Monday night and came back to this restaurant right across from our Travelodge. We were so glad we did. My Quatro Stagione pizza with ham, mushrooms, peppers and onions was absolutely delicious. Husband had a calzone which he really enjoyed. Nice glass of house red and a Tetleys beer. I had cheesecake which was really light almost moussey shouldn’t have had it but I felt like a bit of sweet. We were served by the delightful Vilma who’s studying here but comes from Athens - yep as much as Sunderland has done feat architecture the climate for me says Athens every time!!! Theresa in the kitchen cooked beautifully. Thank you ladies for making what could have been a cold sad evening in Sunderland a warm and cosy one.

My boyfriend and I have been here numerous times as it’s local and the food and service is always brilliant. There are some great deals to be had too - £6.99 for 2 courses at lunch which are always up to the same standard as dinner time. The waitresses are so friendly and attentive - nothing too much trouble for them. Will be back soon!

Definitely my favourite restaurant in Sunderland. I stayed in this city for 2 weeks and I tried the food of several restaurants but Casa Italia is my favourite one. Everything I tried there was delicious and most importantly a natural equilibrium between the price and the quality. It was a very clean place (I really appreciate cleanness in restaurants) and the stuff was always friendly and welcoming. I would highly recommend it.

I ordered bruschetta and Arrabiata and they were lovely. The food is really fresh and they arrive quickly too. The atmosphere is calm and Teresa made us feel really welcome.

Visited here this evening, lovely quiet traditional and small cosy restaurant. Authentic Italian food. Generous portions and a lovely lady serving us. In-expensive considering a 2 course meal with a bottle of wine. Would definitely recommend - excellent!

I stayed in the travel lodge but it doesn't have a restaurant, Casa Italian is right next to the Sunderland Central Travelodge, it is in a great central location, the staff are lovely and friendly, its a comfortable cosy atmosphere. I have eaten here four times in the past week and the food has been fantastic and great value for money every time. I will continue to eat here every time I come to Sunderland. would highly recommend.

Been to Casa Italia tonight. They are an absolute joke & do not deserve to be on this page.

I went for a meal with my boyfriend tonight in casa Italia. We use to go there regularly and usually we have a good service and the food is nice, but I don't know what happened tonight.

Back in Sunderland and looking for a meal out with relations I suggested we try Casa again, after no tgoing there for a while after some not too good experiences.

Sadly this restaurant used to be well worth a visit. I don’t know what’s happened but it’s really gone downhill. Even garlic pizza and pasta bolognese inedible. Won’t be returning.

Not our first time in this restaurant and like every time the food was amazing! The surf n turf fillet was delicious! The service was very good and the staff polite like always. Thank you for one more time and we will be back soon

Visiting my home town decided to give this restaurant located on Southern edge of the town (sorry but city does not sound right) centre. Staff welcoming enough, but interior of windows could definitely be cleaner.

I haven’t had a pizza like this in UK only in Italy when I went. My friend took pasta with muscles and I tried and I wanted that as well. We took so many things and one was even better than the other. The staff is so kind and professional we had cocktails by Vilma and she even made a personalised one for me because it was my birthday. Can’t wait to come back thank you Casa Italia I will recommend to everyone I know

My wife and myself visited the casa Italia on 19th June around 7.30pm. The restaurant was really quiet with only a few diners eating. However the restaurant was very pleasant the staff very friendly and helpful and the food was excellent. The bill at the end was quite surprising too costing just £40 for 3 courses plus drinks. Well worth a visit.

Casa Italia served me the best carbonara I have tasted in Sunderland however a big part of the dining experience is based on the staffs service approach. This was very poor, we sat for 15 minutes before being offered drinks and when we asked if we could order the girl didn't seem to care. Will return maybe and hopefully staff will be more friendly and professional.

Cannot fault the food it was truly lovely. It’s a small restaurant so seating is very close to each other, it was also very cold at times due to a back door being opened frequently by staff. Staff were pleasant also.

The food is to die for absolutley lovely they also do take away as well as sit in. The staff are lovely and friendly

The interior is quite dated and in need of refurbishment but that is compounded by the window frames being very dirty adjacent to our table. Also the toilets cleanliness left a lot to be desired. The waitress was pleasant and the service was ok, but the food was poor. We shared potato skins to start which were over cooked and the dip was more like tartare sauce than garlic mayo. For mains I had the worst marguerita pizza I've ever had and my husbands quatro stagione pizza was advertised to have Parma Ham as one of the toppings but was just chopped up cheap sandwich ham. So also terrible. If we had not been in a hurry to catch a show at the nearby Empire theatre we would definitely have complained. Give this one a miss.

Me and my partner went to Casa Italia in Feb for an evening out. We waited over 15 minutes to order a drink, the table next to us had arrived after us, ordered drinks and had their starter before we had ordered a drink. I had to go to the bar myself to order as no staff were coming to order. This was not a great start to the evening! However the food was great as always! Would recommend chicken in peppercorn for main - good size portion and very tasty!

A group of us dined there on Saturday. It was busy but we’d booked a large group of children and adults. Very slow service. We arrived at 6.30, didn’t get drinks or anyone taking our orders until gone 7 and it was almost 8 before any food arrived. Not good with hungry teenagers who’d been swimming all day (we were all in Sunderland for a swimming competition)

My hubby and I visited here Tuesday night, I had previously been with a couple of friends last year and though not busy the meal was fine. However there were only two diners in, we asked for table for two and taken to the window table off main area. We decided to have the two courses for £9.99. We asked for Garlic mushrooms for both then chicken in a peppercorn sauce for hubs and a pasta dish with chicken and mushrooms for myself. Came quickly and cant fault the garlic mushrooms but not sure what the small crustless but of white bread was supposed to be. Certainly not toast I think it was simply stale bread. Meal arrived but the creamy peppercorn sauce looked dark brown and like gravy. Waitress said yes it was peppercorn sauce so hubs set about eating it but remarked how tough the chicken was. I was picking round my pasta as I thought mine was tough. We ate half as we were hungry and explained why we had not eaten it all. She said she would tell chef. Now it doesn't matter to us if she did or not. We paid and left and still no more customers. Wonder if it was just a quiet night or if this place has gone downhill. We would not go back and would not recommend it. Pity as it had come up trumps food wise when I was there a few month ago.

We were running late for the theatre and wanted a quick bite to eat beforehand. We thought we would give Casa Italia a try. We let the lady know we were running late and in a bit of a rush. Service was amazing food was out within 10 minutes of ordering and it was also absolutely delicious! Very impressed, we shall definitely be back again.

Visited for pre-theatre meal. It was busy but the service was excellent. Lovely smiles all round from the staff on duty. The food was excellent two of us had Tagliatelle Carbonara and it was one of the best I've tasted. The third member had pizza an agreed it was excellent. Thank you for helping to make our visit memorable.

My friend and I went to Casa Italia on Wednesday the 6th of February for a meal before we went to the Empire Theatre to see Warhorse. We didn't want a large meal as I hadn't been well and to be honest didn't think it would be very big . We were very pleasantly surprised. We just ordered from the two courses for £9.99 menu. We both had garlic mushrooms and Penne Bellini, a pasta dish. It was all so very delicious. We both really enjoyed our meal. We were stuffed. The service was good. The girls were all very friendly. We had an amazing evening. Fantastic meal and fantastic show. Thank you Casa Italia we will be back.

Ideal for a quick, inexpensive lunch. Had prawn cocktail for starter - absolutely fine, followed by a calzone, which again was perfectly OK, without being anything out of the ordinary. If I'm being critical, the dough was perhaps a touch on the soft side for my taste, but there was nothing necessarily wrong with it. Slightly scatty service, decent value.

Absolutely dreadful! Starters so salty we couldn't eat it! Asked was everything ok! 6 plates uneaten! We said no " too salty" a shrug of shoulders and off she went. Main meal so salty I complained! 6 said they would just carry on eating! Mine went back and come back exactly same! Plate of salt! I give in! Waitress said she would get chef! What is point? Everyone else finished. And to add insult to injury. Get charged for all meals even starters we didn't eat. I went to pay and after discussion got £10 off £128 bill. No apology! Yet next table to use who apparently knew kitchen were getting loads of attention. 4 of them!!! We were group of 7 spending double what they were!

Ordered Garlic Bread and Chunky Chips as main. Garlic Bread's texture was more like a poppadom or giant crisp and no taste of Garlic. When this was pointed out to waitress I was told 'It is because it is a plain Garlic Bread!!!

Family visit pre theatre. Had looked on the on line menu and decided what i wanted, ordered my meal, after quite a long time the waitress advised me it wasn't available, I reordered and after another long wait received our meals, I had lamb shank, quite tough to chew on a huge bed of dry mash, no other veg, it was altogether no nice but no time to reorder or send it back. My sister had Beef Stroganoff which she described as average at best. The other people in our group had various pizzas which we ok. Not really somewhere i would return. Food delivery was very very slow, the staff however were lovely.

I was taken there by my daughter for lunch for the first time and I really enjoyed the meal ( and I’m fussy) the prices are great staff are so friendly I will definitely go back and recommend it to family and friends

Visited for pre panto meal with family including grandchildren. They seemed to have a sensible policy of seating the parties with children in the same room leaving the other room for adults only. Lovely meal with delicious garlic bread and good quality main courses to suit every taste. Overall a very enjoyable relaxing meal that was good value for money

First time I’ve been here in many years and it certainly didn’t disappoint me or my elderly mother and especially not my 9 yr old daughter as she’s says in her words “its 5 star and the best Italian she’s been too” and we all agreed!!! great atmosphere, very polite staff especially Teresa whom went above and beyond to make us feel welcome with her lovely charm and outgoing personality and most of all the food was fabulous a must and very reasonably priced too, we will be back!

This is a pleasant small restaurant near the city centre in Sunderland. The food is reasonably priced, but of average quality. Nothing incredibly exciting on offer, but OK.

We were in town, looking to get somewhere different for good. We saw this passing and noticed the 2 courses for £5.99 lunch time special.

Went here prior to taking a show in at the Empire, Place was fairly busy, we asked for a table for two and were seated. On reviewing the menu noticed they had 2 specials on one at £9.99 another at £14.99. I fancied a starter from the cheaper special but a main from the dearer one, I was advised this was not possible to which I responded I expect to pay the dearer special price but prefer a starter from the cheaper. I was then advised that if I made the choice I wanted it would be charged at the a la carte menu. I was flabbergasted, speechless. to add insult to injury I was told that no veg's came with the lamb shank but could have them at extra cost. Wont be going back.

We had tickets to see Miss Saigon and we arrived early and we walked into Casa Italia and it was empty but it soon filled up as other people were also going to the theatre.

We had the most lovely lunch here . The service and food were excellent and great value for money. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this lovely venue to anybody .

Visited as a pre theatre dinner and hoped a hidden gem had been found. Our hopes were soon dashed. Restaurant is in a prime location, not far from car parking but exterior view is covered with special offer posters which is not a pleasing look.

Back in Sunderland which meant a meal at Casa, and after the last two visits, (where I was served with the wrong main and the next time on asking for a side order got a pint mug of ice cubes!!!!) I am pleased to report that things are back to normal. Great food, wine and the staff were great, especially the maitre d' was most polite and efficient.

Early evening meal on Wednesday before the theatre, fantastic service and wonderful food! We booked for our family group (8) very helpful and friendly when I phoned to book the table, one of our party had a broken leg so needed wheel chair access. We arrived late as traffic had been bad, swift service to help us make our show in time. Waitresses were very friendly and our son was treat like royalty! Extremely accommodating, lovely choice of food and very efficient service. Thank you for a lovely meal :)

We popped in today for the lunch time special. I would have liked more choice as there were only 4 pizzas and 4 pastas available in the deal but everything we had tasted lovely. Would definitely recommend.

Well presented Italian food with some interesting combinations. Generous glasses of house wines. Speedy service.

We had a family meal for 6 people. 5 of us taking advantage of the 2 courses for £9.99. Choice on the £9.99 menu was decent. The service was good, we weren't rushed, food arrived quickly and was well presented. Most importantly it was very tasty. Pizzas were nice (Texas BBQ & Margherita) by all accounts, the soup of the day was judged to be delicious (spinach) and the 3 chicken dishes (mine included) were all very good. The only criticism of the chicken was slightly too much sauce. My Diavola was the right level of spiciness for as well. We've been to this restaurant before and will definitely return.

Visited after attending a football match at the Stadium of Light , I had the Tomato and Mozzarella Garlic Bread followed by the Pollo Pasta Pecante , both were beautiful! A bottle of Peroni to drink and my bill was approx £15 , which I thought was very good value. Will be back!

Nice looking place .. Seated by the window by attentive and well mannered server. Lunch specials, why not .. The lady had the Bruschetta starter, and I had the salad. Then the lady had the pizza, and I had the Carbonara Tagliatelli ... All the food was very good, the Bruschetta was great ! The salad was delicious, and both main meals were very very nice indeed !! We will definitely be going back .. !

3 of us stopped off at Casa Italia for a pre theatre meal. All 3 of us chose the £9.99 earlybird meal and washed it down with a glass of wine each and two coffees. The food was excellent, the restaurant full with a nice atmosphere and ambience, and the wine was very well priced at £3.95 per glass. My bill for 3 came to £47.52 which I thought was good value. Service was good, and we will definately use it again when we attend the theatre.

After a drink in town we called into Casa Italia for an early evening meal.A two course meal is £9.99.We (four of us ) had a starter each and main meal (chicken with veg or chips) 2 bottles of wine and coffees.We paid £20 each including the tip.The meal was excellent !

We didn’t plan a trip out today but ended up in Sunderland today with my partner and little girl 15months old we googled mapped a place to eat and we found this restaurant and glad we did a beautiful set out and the lady who looked after us today was Shauna well mannered helpful young lady she’s could do enough to assist us in our visit thank you and hopefully we will get back 100% service

Staff were very friendly and helpful. The decor is ok and it was clean. However, the food was very poor. Pizzas thick based, doughy and underdone. We make much much better at home. Wasn't just ours - we saw other customers coming out. Salmon crostini...

Happy hour is great, very worth the money and food is tasty too. However you don't get asked for sauces etc, staff put the food down and go so your sat waiting or trying to catch them for more drinks, sauces, cutlery

Back in Sunderland, so it was a meal at Casa Italia, Very quite , no one in. Ordered the smoked salmon starter which having had it on several previous occasions, didn't match what we had eaten on previous visits, nor did it match the menu. The fish main I ordered was not available, so had the Tuna instead. As this didn't come with any vegetables as such I stopped the waitress who had taken our order and asked if I could have a portion of vegetables as shown on the menu. "Of course" she said, and returned moments later with a glass of ice cubes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Me and the wife went for some grub before we went to the Empire and chose the Casa Italia. First impression was not bad slight smell in doorway. We were taken to a nice little table for 2 near the window by a young Italian girl (nice on the eye with a bit of bra showing) we ordered 2 lagers and my glass was a bit dirty but never said anything as I am not one to make a fuss lol. There was a candle (unlit) on the table which in my opinion would have been nice lit the glass it was in was very grubby needing a good clean. I had prawn cocktail but the prawns had no taste at all probably why lashings of sauce on it. Wife had potato skins which were nice. I had steak in Dianne sauce and wife lasagne both were delicious for sweet we had profiteroles which were OK nothing special but my spoon was filthy dried food on it. We had a few more lagers and legged it to a bar for some knees up fun and a giggle. My overall view of this joint is staff are polite but could do with putting a smoke on their clocks, bogs were clean, food was average, cleanliness of cutlery and glasses shocking, so if your after a half decent nosh up and don't mind a bit of muck on your spoon and a tad bit pricey then flock to it if not fill your face somewhere else.

Visited here yesterday before a theatre show. First the good points. The service was spot on as was the place itself and ambiance. Now to the food. Call me boring but 9 times out of 10 if I go to an Italian I have penne Arrabiata and I very much use the quality of this as a yardstick as to how good the place is. Firstly Casa Italia didn't have it on the menu!! What? It's like the equivalent of not having a marguerita pizza on the menu either. So I opted for the equivalent which as pasta picante. It read pasta with chicken, chorizo in a spicy tomato sauce. When it came it wasn't spicy AT ALL and the chorizo was very dubious looking stuff that looked and tasted more like Pek. Finally, at the bit when you as for parmesan and black pepper I was told the pepper was on the table. Sorry I want the waiter to add the black pepper for me. That is standard service in an Italian. Finally, the pricing wasn't great either. I was there at 6pm on a Sunday. Classic happy hour timing I would have thought but no so had to pay full price. Casa Italia if you are reading this please take note. You are in competition with at least four other great Italians that are located very near to you ie Sorrentos, Marcellos, Lucianos and Toscas all which sell a great Arrabiata, all better priced and all whose waiter add pepper to my dish for me!!!. I will not be returning until Arrabiata is on the menu. Last thing your website is abysmal. I couldn't even check your menu online beforehand. Again pretty standard stuff that the competition provide me with. Sort these things out or you may find you go out of business because we go to you competition.
