We were really looking forward to our Sunday lunch, but it was soon to turn sour. We waited a long time between getting our drinks and placing our food order. It was becoming apparent that there was none or very little heating on. We did ask and the waitress went to get a new gas bottle for the heater but never returned! A waitress eventually took our order and we had another round of drinks, that’s how long it took for the waitress to come and take our order for food. Two of us ordered from the kitchen and the other two ordered carvery. The meals from the kitchen were good and were enjoyed; whereas the two carvery’s were both stone cold! We were also getting colder by the minute. Our driver went to fetch the car whilst we made a complaint at the bar. To be honest, it fell on deaf ears. They gave us £12 towards another round of drinks and said that we should have complained earlier! When we got to the car, my partner said he had struggled to walk to the car because of the extent of the coldness. ( he has an underlying health condition) Needless to say, we will not be going back. It’s a shame as it’s a beautiful setting.

We decided to try the Hardwick Inn today for lunch. The first thing I noticed on our arrival, was the bar area was cold. I mentioned this three times to the lady behind the bar. The first couple of times I felt I was ignored, the third time she said she would turn on the calor heater. After trying this for a couple of minutes the lady told me that the heater required a new gas bottle, promptly walked off ( I thought to get another gas bottle) but sadly never returned. Two of the people on my table didn't have the carvery (one had gammon & one had pie) & both said it was nice. However two of us had the carvery & it wasn't very warm (very much like the room we were in). At no time did member of staff approached us while we were eating to ask how the meal was until I went to pay. Firstly I explained that the room was cold which was met be some lene excuse that people had been coming in through the door. I went on to explain that the carvery hadn't been particularly warm to be greeted with silence. My partner also complained about the food to someone more senior who went on to charge for small carveries as opposed to regular ones. This was our first visit to the Hardwick Inn for lunch & it will definitely be our last. If I could possibly made this a no star review I definitely would have done.

The food is awful. The ploughman's special as they call it... Was pitiful for the price. Half an apple, a few crisps and quarter if that of scotch egg & pork pie. Oh and choice of sandwiche which if you like butter you'll be fine. I ordered turkey, stuffing and cranberry. The cranberry didn't exist. The stuffing was frozen, tasteless and hard. But the butter was plentiful so I'd say I'd you enjoy a butter sandwich for £11.99. Oh and chips we ordered as a side and they were frozen and looked anemic. Cooked in what I can only describe as cheap oil. They were the worst I've ever tasted. Even covered in watered down vinegar they were vile Staff couldn't care less about whether you liked it or there more interested about talking amongst themselves or how soft there hair is as they washed it last night. oh and social media. Very professional. not!! Save your money and go elsewhere.

After a walk around nearby Hardwick Estate with friends this pub is ideally situated. We had booked ahead for lunch. We had a wonderful time chatting with our friends over a superb meal. Service was great & the staff very friendly. The food was piping hot and delicious - and large portions. I can recommend the Steak & Ale pie. We all had starters and couldn't find room for dessert. Brilliant

A good choice of Vegetarian and Vegan options that makes a change (nice one Hardwick) My wife had Hardwick's own Vegetable Burger, that she did say was perhaps the best she had ever tasted for a burger, I had the Hardwick's own Stake and Stilton pie that was beautiful, both meals were simple delicious served up lovely and hot as they should be and good portions also, Genuinely great service with a smile, Friday 9th Aug, Thank you we will be returning soon.

Poor, we had the prawn sandwich and scampi and chips, the prawn sandwich came on brown bread cut way to thick each slice was 1/2” and also 1/2 an apple on tbd plate!!,…the chips on both meals were not cooked. Very disappointed and it’s a shame they are serving sub standard food because the location is superb, go for a drink but don’t waste your money on the food.

The Hardwick Inn is a beautiful venue set in the grounds of Hardwick Hall amongst lovely open countryside with an abundance of walks available too. We have eaten here very many times over the last twenty plus years and always been very satisfied with the quality and quantity of the fare on offer, especially the steak pie which is my favourite choice. Here however is where I feel the need to express my dissatisfaction ... Having not been in a position to pay the Hardwick Inn a visit for approximately a year, it was very much noted by my partner and myself that the portion amounts of the main courses were much reduced, despite ordering the full portion sizes . The Hardwick always offered guests much larger portions than what they provide now and that was part of it's appeal for a hard working ex. farmer ! We expect to visit again for an evening meal within the next two or three weeks and hopefully there may be a tad more on our plates ... Why not at least offer the old portion sizes as an option please ? We shall see next visit. Other than that, it's a marvelous pub in every respect .

Decided to go with family for dinner in the sun as we usually have a nice meal here but this visit was not good at all.the egg was hard over cooked and so were the chips. Some of the meat was very fatty and not up to usual standards £27 for a mix grill and i probably ate £15 worth the other meals the chips were terrible and most were left.we did point this out to the waitress

Came here for lunch to meet friends as a halfway point between our homes. The Inn itself is very traditional and attractive and possibly ok if you just want a drink. We booked a table for lunch and unfortunately had not looked at the menu prior to booking. The Mains menu had 21 dishes of which only 1 was a vegetarian option (plus 1 swap on request for a veggie sausage if you wanted bangers and mash). We asked if there was a separate vegetarian menu and were told that all the options were on the main menu. When I pointed out that there was only 1 option and that it should be fed back to the chef that more options should be made available due to it being a very meat heavy menu, I was told 'that's the way they want it'. As if that wasn't bad enough, there were no vegan options at all. The food was ultimately overpriced and under-whelming and we won't be returning.

Came out for a lunch meal with family, for my birthday. Service was brilliant with friendly staff who didn't leave us waiting. Food and drink came out swiftly. Food was tasty. However, the pastry on the chicken pie was incredibly sweet. But reading a review below mentions that there wasn't enough chicken but I had plenty in mine. I didn't mention anything as the rest of the meals were delicious. Place was clean and made comfortable with a roaring fire. Will definitely come again but please make the pastry less sweet

Wanted to break our morning motorway journey north with a breakfast stop - McDonalds Roadchef Tibshelf Northbound - not. The Hardwick Inn is about as far removed from Maccas as you could get and although the satnav tried to take us through the neighbouring gated estate, it was so worth the short detour! Such a grand old pub with huge flagstone floors and characterful rooms tucked away in all directions. Opens at 10am which is a bonus and on arrival just after then, the place was already busy with a multitude of dog walkers and ramblers. The 7 day a week, all day menu, offers traditional breakfast fayre, together with a range of sandwiches, soups and jacket potatoes. We were warned of a possible delay on processing the orders, but this proved to be unfounded, albeit with slightly longer wait time than Maccas. The big breakfast was insanely big, with the field mushroom having a diameter larger than the baked bean ramekin and also featured award winning local sausages. Only filter coffee available, but that was part of the deal anyway. Would loved to have stayed a bit longer for a pint of Old Peculiar, but a wedding in Thirsk beckoned.

I have never written a review on a meal out before, but feel obliged to. Myself, my sister and my friend go out weekly for a meal and are always looking for different places to try. This was by far the worst food yet. We all went for the pie, they had the steak and I opted for the chicken and bacon (not that i saw a deal of chicken). The menu says shortcrust pastry on top?? It was brown almost cake like, sweet but greasy tasting. Everything had not a deal of flavour at all, even the peas!! Ate as much as I could but it was very sickly so could not finish it. When she came to collect our plates we all told her that it wasn't nice at all, her reply was "oh". She couldn't have cared less. I would have thought that someone in charge would have came over to asked what wasn't right, but no. I gave one star for the drinks, the lattes and wine were lovely. If you want to spend £15/16 on pie, chips and peas then go to a chippy! It will be so much nicer and cost you half that. Don't waste your money.

Been here loads of time but this was one to forget. The room was cold it was over 20 mins before our order was taken and we had to ask. We wanted a roast dinner but there was only pork on offer and it was dried out, as was the mash. If this is the new standard it probably explains why it was empty at 7.30. We didn't risk a sweet, and we did tell the waitress, which I don't do as a rule ( too english!!)

Lovely pub with good food and waiting staff. The visit was spoiled by the manager, who was rude and clearly had no customer service training. My daughter had booked a dog friendly table by phone, however we were told she had not done so and that the person who took the booking 'does not make mistakes.' There was no apology or acknowledgement that this could have been their error. No alternative was offered and we were left feeling very uncomfortable, standing at the entrance deciding what to do. As we were meeting family for a Christmas get together we were unable to go elsewhere, and ended up leaving the dog in the car, which we were unhappy with as we would not have taken him if we had not booked a dog friendly table. A simple apology would have gone a long way.

The food is very disappointing, all the meals were lukewarm at best. The vegetables on the turkey dinner were shocking, I don’t mind slightly over cooked carrots but these were mush. The Yorkshire puddings were rubbery, parsnips over sweet, roast potatoes tough from reheating (probably in a deep fat fryer) and the mashed potatoes tasteless. The pastry on the pie was soggy and the starters equally as bad, tasteless and dry. Not only were the meals poor it was freezing cold in there! Not just us but People around us were having to wear their coats whilst eating. I know it’s an old building but they told us they had only just turned the heating on! For context there was snow outside and it was minus 2!

Firstly I was surprised how the front of the pub, was all cordoned off, which wasn’t ideal, as there was snow on the ground, my parents are elderly and I’m disabled with mobility issues, so the plan was for my husband to drop us right by the front door, then go and park up. So we steadily walked into the pub. I checked in, and we were shown to a table in the dining room. Straight away, the low sun was in my eyes, but there was no blinds or curtains to cut it out, so we asked if we could move to another table, to be told abruptly, all the tables were reserved. The member of staff then offered us another table in the adjoining room, which was much better. The meal was very average, I wasn’t asked either if I wanted garden peas or mushy peas.

We often visit the Hardwick if we can’t be bothered to cook, as it’s literally ten minutes away. It’s well situated, but since they extend outside by putting out more tables, the car parking is pretty crap. There is an overflow car park, but it’s about 100 yards away, muddy, and in the winter, it’s pitch black, so you are taking your life in your hands when walk-in up to the pub. Food wise, I’ve never had a bad meal, and last night was no exception. I had the game pie which was exceptional. Service was good as usual, and for two people with drinks, £31 was very reasonable. My only real grip is that in the winter, it is always cold unless you sit in the bar with the fire lit. The other rooms tend to be on the nippy side. It is a nice place to visit, but be prepared to walk up from the car park, and be a little chilly whilst eating.

Rustic and old-fashioned in all the worst ways. The pub actually stank of defecation, like reeked of it. The staff were so weird and clueless. For example, they expected us to order without giving us a menu and would rather act like we inconvenienced them by not bringing a menu in with us or something when we asked for one upon them asking for our orders about a minute after we sat down. I had lasagne, which was dry, overcooked, small in size and generally horrid..... I just couldn't eat it. The staff seem lacking in any customer service experience and nomadic. This was the best place to eat on a Saturday evening once. No wonder the car park was empty... Don't go.... The Carnarvon three miles up the road is much better.!!

I love the fact that there is a choice of the size of the meal you have as I'm not a big eater. But this time the Lasagna size had been reduced to a tiny portion, really disappointed I think it would be better to up the cost a £1 or so rather than serve up such a tiny portion.

Our friends and I visited here for drinks one evening. Staff at the outside bar were okish. But you could tell they didn’t want to be there and we were a waste of their time. After a two rounds of drinks some of us decided to get some tables inside and order food. A member of staff showed us to some available tables. We waited awhile but no staff came to take our order. So we went to the bar inside and placed our order About ten minutes later a staff member came by and said what are you guys doing? Are you eating or what? As we have been walking by wondering what you are doing. Not being funny but isn’t it the staffs job to ask if we needed anything and take our orders? Instead of walking by several times wondering. Do your job. She didn’t have to be passive aggressive. We told her we ordered at the bar. So she grabbed the menus and left in a huff. Two of us ordered the pie which on the menu both in house and online says shortcrust pastry. But they came with some horrible thick like bread topping soaked in gravy. It was nasty. All of our meals looked like the cooks just slapped some food on the plate. When we were leaving we walked by the kitchen and I noticed it was so dirty. Food all over the ground, plates and cookware just piled up everywhere. So dirty. Good thing they don’t have a restaurant where the kitchen is on display. If they did I don’t think anyone would eat here. All I can say is before I left this review I emailed the establishment. All I got in a response was the automated email saying we aim to get back in touch with you. I waited two weeks and nothing. So hence my review to warn others from going here. All I will say is don’t expect friendly or attentive staff. Expect very mediocre food. And just because the menu says something, it doesn’t mean that’s what you will get.

The Hardwick Inn is in a great location and the main building is lovely: it seems unchanged for many years and, in the age of so many gastro pubs, still has a traditional pub feel. The food is generally very good - however they used...

This place has turned into an absolute joke. The queue times are ridiculous and half the time there is only 2 people on, one taking orders and one making the drinks. Now they have changed their opening times and if you are seeing a movie after 7.30 you can't get a coffee now. We used to persevere because we like the coffee however the final nail in the coffin was the price increase! £7 for a venti cold brew! £7! however if you drive to meadowhall just around the corner you can have the same drink for £5.75! It's an absolute rip off! We will no longer be going!
