Cafolla's Cafe in Ards

Lovely fresh salad here today, beautifully presented and accompanied with a plate of fabulous crunchy chips. Staff friendly and very reasonably priced.

Best fish and chips in the town. Only downside is that the cafe tends to be a bit cold in the winter, but that doesn't take a way from the food quality.

Went to cafe in the square newtownards, you have to pre pay for your food, so when you come in and get seated you look over menu then you have to get up and go and pay for it , then return to your seat and wait for you food to arrive, the food was cold the peas sour, absolutely rotten I wouldn't feed it to a dog, if it hadn't been pre paid I would have returned it and left, I would rather eat out of abin then eat there again, a Very bad system money means more than the quality of food, no point in it opening its doors

We went to Cafolla’s in Conway Square today for lunch, perfect choice. The tastiest fish and chips I can remember, lightly battered and high quality fish with real, old-style chips. Satisfied a hunger perfectly and extremely good value, just don’t know why it’s taken us so long to come here, but this will be rectified straight away. But what makes this place different? Its unique selling point is Ricardo! He took time out to come and chat, made us feel appreciated. He is clearly a man of massive industry experience, welcoming and charming, a consummate professional, the jewel in the crown!!!

We arrived in on Tuesday for a bit of food. Unsure of how sit in works in this place we sat down. A staff member in quite a rude tone said to us from the counter ‘uh you’re supposed to order up here’ so my girlfriend went up and ordered our food. The staff member then said again in a rude and abrupt tone and said ‘are you sitting in?’ Rolled her eyes and asked if there were any drinks to which we said no. We then sat waiting on our food and a woman who seemed to be the boss or some sort of management and asked the server if we were sitting in, commented on how we hadn’t order any drinks again in a negative tone. When our food arrived we asked for some red sauce as well to which we were told it was another 40p for a small tub which I find abnormal as most cafes will offer a bottle or at least sachets on the tables. Food arrived and was average but nothing worth talking about. Staff were pushy, ignorant and made us feel uncomfortable as they talked about us right beside us in a strange tone. Wouldn’t recommend this place for food or service and won’t be returning anytime soon. If you’re looking food in Newtownards try the regency cafe or one of the chippies/restaurants

Arrived this morning on the Liverpool Ferry in search of the perfect Ulster Fry something we had been looking forward to for months. With the ferry docking at 6am we reviewed places that would be open before 9am. We chose to visit an iconic Cafe that has been around for years and the website said it would open at 8.30am. We parked near by and with the anticipation building we entered the Cafe at 8.35 having watched the staff set up tables outside. The initial look from the staff member should have caused alarm bells to ring. The expression said 'What are you doing in this early, we aren't ready. We picked up breakfast menus from the counter and sat down only to discover the internal tables were soaking wet where outside tables had been stored on top of them. I picked up some napkins and dried the table. I choose the large Fry and my wife had the slightly smaller Ulster Fry, we also ordered two teas, after about 20 minutes the waitress came over and said they were just waiting for the kitchen equipment to warm up and they would get the breakfasts to us as soon as they were ready. At about 9.10 they arrived and two small cups of tea with a splash of milk followed. The first thing was that the bacon was pail and very undercooked, I feel a good vet could have revived it. The sausages on the other hand had been deep fried and looked like they were reheated. The soda and potato bread were cool and greasy. The egg was nice with a lovely dark yellow yoke. The sausage was cheap yet the Cafe is next door to an Award winning butchers. My wife sent her meal back and politely asked for the bacon to be cooked more. What a disappointment! We finished up and I went to use the loo before we set of for Bushmills but alas No Loos. Would we return? Not likely, would we recommend? Definitely NOT!

Fake owner who’s attitude stinks they should consider keeping her in the back or hiring someone who’s a lot more pleasant

Called for a burger (£3.70) which appeared very quickly, cheap nasty microwaved burger that had been overcooked, meat was burnt around the edges with the rest of the burger resembling rubber, looked like a nasty 50 pence burger from Iceland. One bite then straight into the bin.

We called in for ice-cream as we were in the area and had previously been told how lovely their ice-cream was. Reasonably priced, 5 cones with flakes for £11. 👌 The ice-cream was lovely, not sickly and over sweetened like some can be. Our children particularly enjoyed theirs! 😬 Would definitely call again next time we are in the area. 😊

It was a nice day so took the kids down for some ice cream son ended up finding a long black hair in his tub rest of us didn’t even want to finish ours won’t be back!!

Takeaway portion terrible and not worth the price !! Never order chips from here , the cost v portion size was terrible I actually counted the chips which came in a small bag and was 19 single chips Worst portion ever experienced in a chippy Never going there again

Needed to link with traditional food... so chose Cafollas... were not disappointed! Food was excellent... had eggs and chaps and pasty and chips. Followed that upwithjelly and ice cream in the colours of the Italian flag... felt like being children yet again! Lovely.

Me and my girlfriend visited for a very first time for lunch on Thursday. We ordered chicken nuggets and fish and it was cooked to perfection, really satisfied and be back soon

Husband and I had a wee date day. It was a choice between a newly opened untested place or this gem. So glad we came here, fresh ingredients and an unbelievably great price. Took me back to my childhood when cafe dinning was just the best... Still is it turns out. 10/10 for the chicken burger and goujons :)

Food was average, disappointed that basic items like tuna were unavailable. Toastie had very sparse filling accompanied by a virtually non existent side salad. Felt that the staff were rushing us out as the bill was on the table as soon as we got our food. Also disappointed to learn that there are no customer toilets not ideal for customers with children, mobility issues. Also think the fact that it's cash only payment needs to be advised to customers when ordering.

My partner, baby and I visited on Friday. The staff were brilliant, very friendly and helpful with the baby. It has a great atmosphere and we will definitely be back. The food was gorgeous, it is the best place to get a fry.

My Dear Grandmother used to bring me here every Saturday from I was around 7yrs old.I am now in my 40's and came back today with my eldest daughter.The place just felt the exact same,warm and welcoming,cosy and friendly.I had a brief chat with the owner who was really lovely.Food and service was just excellent.Fond memories which I plan to now make with my family.Just awesome ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Very impressed with the service at Cafolla’s, we were served soon after we sat down and the food was in front of us before we had a chance to think about being hungry. Intrigued by the amount of people coming in solely for ice cream, we just had to try! Easily some of the best ice cream I’ve ever tasted and will definitely be back for more (even if it takes a 40 minute journey from home). Overall a very welcoming and friendly place to eat!

Cafollas hit the spot! We both really enjoyed our food. The chicken burger and chips was very tasty and the sausage egg and chips went down a treat. Make sure you try out their icecream too after your meal. The knickerbocker glory was excellent and so too were the cappuccinos. We'll be back soon!

A great cafe settled in the square. Fast, family friendly service. With a service with a smile, which is hard to come by today. Great meal and will definitely be back. The homemade ice cream is worth the hype. Truly delicious and you have to try if you ever visit.

Any time of the day we always get seated and served fairly quickly. Food is very tasty, portions are good and service is prompt and friendly. If you don't fill up too quick you can chance a 99 on your way out and provided the sun is shining sit outside and enjoy the view.

Sunday lunch made easy... A chip shop combined with an ice cream parlour... A combination made in heaven! Try their floaters or milk shakes they are truly to die for!

Have been to this place quite a few times in the past couple of years and I do like it. It's refreshingly unpretentious and straightforward. The layout of the booths with their upright dividers and fixed seat/tables is like stepping back through decades. I've always found the food to be great and the service to be "old school".

Just popped into the shop for some of their vanilla ice cream as it had come recommended. Wasn't disappointed. It was so lovely and creamy. Just as good as some of the more renowned ice cream shops in Belfast! Will be back

This cafe used to have mature women serving and was an excellent little place, I had many lunches on a Saturday with various family members and friends but unfortunately things changed, the experienced women have been replaced with children.

Visited this wee cafe and honestly have to say didn’t want to leave, the staff are friendly ,helpful and give great advice regarding menu . The cafolla family are lovely genuine people you just know they love what they do ,each time we visit , we get great service , delicious tasty food and just fantastic amazing ice cream

We always try and get in a quick visit to Cafolla's, whether that be for some of their amazing chips, an Ulster Fry, a milkshake or ice-cream. For us this is 100% a total trip down memory lane as we used to come as kids for slider ice-creams. It's not an A La Carte, it's a family run café that's been here since 1927, and we just love it! Service is always with a smile and we always smile when we visit...it's a little slice of history and some very happy childhood memories.

Thought we would give this, once the best cafe in Ards another go . The standard of service has greatly improved. Unfortunately the standard of food has falling drastically. I ordered the fry with sun-dried tomatoes and my friend ordered Scampi . The Scampi was full of grease (maybe frozen) The fry was alright , but think a vet could bring the bacon back to life as it was so undercooked and the sun-dried tomatoes fried until chewy . The coffee wow just awful, out off a jar (WHY). The tea might have only seen a teabag on passing it was like dish water . Not a place I would recommend .

This cafe has great ice cream and it’s nice to sit outside -in good weather.problem is when are they going to do more than one flavour? Vanilla is great but chocolate would be amazing,the staff are always great.

We came over to N.I to have a lovely day out and an amazing breakfast and it did not disappoint. The Ulster Fry and Don Cafollas breakfast were perfect, well cooked and hot! We also had an ice cream each which was lovely! The staff were happy and friendly giving a very warming atmosphere! We can't wait to return!

Called I earlier to get a chocolate milkshake & an ice cream. Milkshake was AWFUL... do you use ice cream? It tasted like cold hot chocolate:( couldn't really mess up the ice cream! 2nd time snapped at by the same member off staff (awful service!) Used to love coming in here!! Not any more!

Has been a family run business in Newtownards for as long as I can remember and my parents and grandparents before me best ice cream and fish and chips Ever and the coffee is lovely.

My elderly mother, who has has quadruple by-pass surgery and has rheumatoid arthritis, was told by staff that there were no customer toilets. After finishing her meal, she was told to go to the public toilets which, according to staff, were just around the corner. Well, my mother needed to be driven there because of her mobility and health issues. And when she got there they were closed as it was after 6pm. Staff said she couldn’t use the staff toilets as she would have had to walk through the kitchens.

Finally got back to Cafolla's in Conway Square for the first time since 1961....... only to find that they still have the best ice cream and friendliest service ever ! Thanks to Catherine and her fantastic team we had a really enjoyable experience again, even outside in the drizzle (well it was at the height of that 'heat wave in Ireland). Well done Cafolla's in Conway Square, and here's to the next century !

We really used to enjoy the fare here. So from that statement you can tell that we no longer visit. I remember the times when the service was really good, the breakfasts were lovely, non greasy and hot. However on one occasion, the waitress constantly walked by us and served others who came in after us and no attempt was made to take our order. Are you thinking "why not call the waitress and say something." A waiter/waitress is there for the sole purpose of seeing to the customer and as she knew we had not been served as there was no cutlery on the table as they normally do once you have ordered, we got up and walked out. However we decided to give it another go some months later. Yes, our order was taken quickly, but when the food arrived it was cold and so greasy had to send it back. As for the once beautiful chips, they were hard and cooked several times. So no more for us.

Went there with my partner for dinner, I liked what I had to eat, fish and chips but my partner was not impressed at all with his chicken dish. One tiny teaspoon of coleslaw, miserable portion size, service was slow too Won’t be back....sorry

Visited today with my two younger girls. Really impressed with the new menu. I ordered the Don Cafolla Fry and wasn't disappointed! What a feed. The kids shared a banana split that was really well presented and tasted just as good. Really reasonably priced and the waitresses are all so friendly.

Food is alright, but what makes this place great is the service. One of the girls in particular(dark hair, mid 20’s?) nearly passes herself she runs around so much making sure everyone is ok or asking if they need anything. She really keeps the place in good nick! Speedy service too

It must have been a good 10 years since I last ate here as I’ve moved out of the area. Food still great, with more choices on the menu than before, home made burgers are very good. Couldn’t fault anything. Ice cream as good as ever and still cheap, like back in the day.

Was extremely impressed with both the service & the quality of the food when I called in recently. Ordered a veggie fry. It came promptly. The staff were very friendly. The fry was superb. Crisply done & very well presented. Owner Michael Cafolla was genuinely interested in feedback. I’ll be back.

The staff in cafollas are always really friendly and helpful. The food was great value for money. As an older woman I especially enjoyed the fish and the ice cream.

I have been going here since I was a 'wee girl' in the 70s. I live in England now but was 'home' for a visit over christmas and thought Id pop in for 'a chip'. It was just not the same. Although the chips tasted nice it was a saucer size plate and the charge was £2.50. Pretty steep considering you can get a large chips for less than £2 in a regular chppy by the seaside.....

My elderly mother was on a shopping trip and called in for a mini fry and cup of tea, The waitress took her order and left, Other customers came , were seated and ordered, Their food arrived but my Mothers didn't appear, After 25 minutes she asked the waitress where her food was and the waitress checked and said she forgot to press the send button??? (technology is great if you can use it) anyway she apologised and said she would chase it up, Another 10 minutes and my mother got up to leave, the waitress asked have you not got your food yet??? my mother said no and the waitress said she would check where the order was, to late 35 minutes and you can't get a mini fry and a cup of tea, Went to Mama G's round the corner and service was brilliant as was the food , Cafolla's might be an "instituation" but no excuse for poor service.

Called into this place on a reccomendation from a bus driver from Belfast, have to say we were more than happy with service and value of food, paininis were well presented and great value at £3 for an Italian one with Italian meat etc in it, fry was excellent and around £3 as well and ice cream was the best I've had in a long time, very good all round, would reccomend.

Cafola's is an institution in Newtownards, with many generations running this classic milk bar. The service is friendly and quick, and the food (particularly the ice cream) brilliant. If you don't stop here you are mad. This place is a MUST. LOVE CAFOLA'S.

This was our second visit. Best chicken burgers we have had in a long time. This time we actually only came down to 'Ards from Belfast to get lunch here. Two chicken burgers, a portion of gravy chips, tin of Fanta and a coffee only £15! Portions are huge too, there is no way you will leave here hungry

I can't fault its take away ice cream but as for the table service!!! After 15 minutes of waiting to have my order taken and getting walked past numerous times by the waitress so she could tend to other customers who came in after us. We ended up walking out and going to McDonalds for Big Macs and Chicken Nuggets!!!

I have been known to buy a large tub, wrap in newspaper in a freezer bag, and carry it 60 miles home, just to have Cafolla's ice cream when I want it! I've been enjoying it for fifty years and it's just as good today.

Great for frys and tasty chips, however I think 20p for a portion of brown sauce is ridiculous. The menu could do with offering a few more choices.

He estado aquí muchas veces tanto por la comida y helado y que ha sido siempre muy bien, pero esta semana tuve que comentar porque me pareció muy por debajo de la media. Pedí un pescado super y helados para llevar. El servicio era muy lento y cuando finalmente mi pedido y lo llevó de vuelta al coche me decepcionó mucho. El pescado era tan pequeña, que había sido se rompió en dos y la sección media era sólo pasta, había unos 2 bocados de pescado y las patatas fritas eran duras y poco hecha. Quería volver, pero mi marido dijo que simplemente dejar, nos había tirado suficiente tiempo y a no volver

Very traditional chip shop. Old look but friendly and welcoming. Had a lovely chip and ice cream to die for. People come here in cars just for ice cream.

Best ice cream in newtownards , worth the drive to get it, I would recommend the sliders.its a very small cafe, but staff friendly and helpful, great tasty Ulster fry with tea.

Love this cafe- not in Newtownards all that often but ALWAYS go here for a fish supper & an ice cream when i am. Bring the kids too and they love it as well. Staff are friendly, efficient and happy to help.

Cafolla's is a real Newtownards institution. It's been taken over by a new generation lately, but still from the same family, which is lovely to see these days and they've maintained the same focus on quality food at good prices. Staff are friendly and efficient. It's well worth trying to save some space for ice cream after your meal as well, the ice cream here is among the best I've tasted. Highly recommend. Get there early at lunchtime if you can, it's very popular and fills up fast.

I have been visiting Cafollas for a fry now for well over a decade and I wouldn't have it any other way. The food and service is always superb and you can guarantee you'll be made to feel welcome.

We Only ordered a baked potato and poached eggs with toast and bacon and a cup of tea but couldn't fault it, perfectly poached eggs which you don't always get no matter where you go, friendly staff, attentitive, cheap and cheerful thumbs up good job

I went in here for lunch before going to work. I wanted to try it since they redone the place. I got the pasta bolognese. It arrived with cheese which was as hard as anything. I only really eat cheese if it's melted. Mind you when I ate the pasta it wasn't the hottest.so that explained the cheese not melting. I was tasty and big portion but not hot. But I was in a rush for work and didn't have time to get it heated so I ate it anyway. I used the toilet. I was disappointed by the restroom as I actually had to lift the toilet seat off the floor to use it. Yes very hygienic. I'm not rushing back.

Cafolla's almost defines 'cheap and cheerful'. It's really not for the swanky or lovers of nouvelle cuisine but, if you want a quick cup of tea, a decent fry or a bit more, this is the place for you. Old style box sets mean that, if it's really busy, you may need to share with another diner.

Called into Cafollsa for coffee's on Tuesday afternoon and was surprised at the quality of the coffee. It was amazing. Will be back again as we also found the staff friendly, good supply of newspapers and relaxing warm atmosphere.

Great non greasy fry's and fish&chips with famous for home made ice-cream.Easy to find in the town square, another one in Regent St. But stick to the one in the square. 4 generation's now have enjoyed it and so will you.

Cafollas in Conway square is part of the history of Ards and still a great spot for an ice cream. and a fairly extensive menu at budget prices The staff are super and time is yours!. (it also has a 5 star hygiene rating) It's still the best and now that the Square has been completely transformed with trees, seating and new paving a visit to the weekly market is a must on a Saturday morning,(circa 9am - 3pm) particularly on a nice sunny day when they put tables and chairs outside. Reminds me of Spain!!! When you are there have a look at the Blaire Maine statue in the top north east corner by the town hall. Blair Mayne was a real swash buckling hero of many of the 2nd world war exploits in North Africa and always check out the town hall. There may be something on. Newtownards is the gateway to the "Ards" peninsula, Parking attendants are """very active"""" There is plenty of car parking close by and 3 minutes away on the edge of town there is a huge Tesco store, Tk Max, Bargain homes, Lydl etc for those with caravans and motor homes. A visit up to Scrabo Tower is well worth the time. The views over Strangford are magnificent on a clear day.

I visited this amazing café on Wednesday. I have to say I have never tasted as nice a icecream ,I always heard about Cafolla's ice cream and am very pleased to say it lives up to its expectations and has exceeded mine.

called in on Saturday the shop was really busy, the queue was out the door its the sorta place that is worth the wait, the chicken goujons were absolutely divine, they were delicious and go well with the sweet chilli dip. I would highly recommend this wee café the food is excellent, the staff are helpful, friendly and full of good banter.

Have been visiting Cafollas for as long as I can remember, called in today with my family and had a beautiful meal as per usual. Glad to see that the new owners have kept the standards high.

Myself and my partner have tried this place a few times for breakfast as it can be lovely ! But unfortunately it's getting more unhygienic and grubby ! so we have stopped going , the tables are never wiped down correctly , the drinking water is dirty the cutlery is dirty . And if I ever asked for our table to be cleaned from ppl sitting at it before us ,the waitress wiped all the dirt and crums onto my lap !! No thanks

Nice strong coffee. Cappuccino and a latte. We were asked if we wanted food answer no, well would we like cake or pastries, no. Oh says the waitress. I felt I had to explain I had just had breakfast. Felt pressured.

Great place to pop in to for the best fast food. Never have to wait long for a table and the staff are all very friendly.

Have been going to caffolla,s for over 10 years on a Sunday morning passing many local cafés on the way, today's fry was the worst ever, soda and potato bread tasted oily,sausages different, mushy inside and rock hard on the outside....payed £4.40 for two slices of bacon and a cup of tea as l left the rest on my plate ...however the staff as usual where friendly and helpful....willing to give it another go ,but consistency of good food and friendly service has kept me coming here over the years so here's hoping that next week it will taste as good as it always has or unfortunately l will have to find some where else to have my breakfast after my long walk with my dog.......

On the Square in the middle of Newtownards, this little place is an institution. It's been there for as long as I can remember and is very good. There is a row of booths down one side of the long narrow restaurant and on busy days you will have to queue. The food is standard chip shop stuff but pretty well done. Worth a try. Note they don't have a toilet!

I have been a long standing customer( as have the rest of my family) for more years than I care to remember and have always enjoyed the food, service and value for money. However I think it would be remiss of me not to mention one small thing which could be off putting to both new and old customers alike.In many establishments which I frequent, condiments are readily available to patrons. I know that it has always been the case that Cafollas would charge 10p for ketchup and brown sauce and this was acceptable as it was my choice to eat there.On Sunday, I was informed that this was increasing to 20p per item which I found to be somewhat against the principle of a family run café. When I mentioned this at the till, I was informed that the portions were larger (although the ketchup was now in a tiny plastic tub, the brown sauce was exactly the same packet as before). I know this might sound petty, but it does beg the question as to why it has to rise by 100%. Would it not be better customer relations to keep the charge @ 10p as it has been for many years, I`m sure this would not threaten the profitability of the business.I do not accept that because it has not gone up for years that 20p is reasonable as other places, as I have mentioned before, have supplied these free of charge.I would ask you to reconsider this charge, so as not to leave a sour taste in my mouth after my fry.

We called in on spec, never having been there before.Food was good. Very nice coffee, our server was very good. Unfortunately, I didn't realise it was a gassing shop for the other staff and their mates, they completely ignored us on arrival, too busy gossiping. And the biggest problem, NO Toilets!! I like to wash my hands before I eat, I will accept no excuse in the 21st century for not having customer toilets, it's smells of profit before customers. If you want to serve food, you must have customer toilets!

Good for a snack and coffee. Could have a better menu but is well located centrally.good value prices. Service was very good with interesting gift shop. Worth a visit.

Best traditional fish and chips around, this original style cafe has been around as long as I can remember, always bustling with locals and visitors. It's prime location as it sits in the town square which holds the town market on a Saturday. Staff are always very helpful and try to get you seated as soon as possible.it's has the original seating and is on the flat although there is not a lot of space for Parma or wheelchair great food and a must if your visiting and want traditional fish and chips

Called in on friday and have to say the service was really fast. Had the fry and it was outstanding as always. The kids had sausages and chips. Very clean and tidy will definitely be back

Every time I go here, I go back 50+ years when my Granny Took me. She lived in Ards & it was a special treat to go there. Love it!!!

Frequently go here for our lunch.always busy but quick service and good value food.the coffee is the best in newtownards.the staff are attentive and well mannered.

Cafolla's café in Conway square has been operating for what seems eons and is very much part of the Newtownards scene, especially on a Saturday morning when the weekly market is on. Last Saturday was particularly nice with the sun out and we were able to sit outside and enjoy a spot of people watching. The food is good but not your nouvelle cusienne but the service is super. Just relax, enjoy a coffee, the market and listen to the "Ards" chatter!!

This place does an Ulster fry like no others, perfectly cooked, great price and fast friendly service, I know I will never be disappointed when eating in Cafollas, there are so many reason why this restaurant has been around so long and always has full seats. Best fry up on the Ards peninsula bar none.

I've been going to Cafolla's since a child and literally it's standard is the same. It doesn't need to change. A bit of history still in motion. Portions a little small and charge for sauce but I think I can live with that as I guess they don't get it free. You do get better seating and portions not far away but it brings me happy memories from my childhood and now my son has the chance to pass on his memories now that he is an adult.

Had no problem with finding a table. Service swift. Food tasty and very filling, but not enormous - which was good. Very reasonably priced. Cafe noisy and no toilets, otherwise a good budget lunch.

I quiried my bill, & the manager / owner called me 'very difficult' in front on several other customers, I was mortified, he slammed the till after the bill was settled, I was so embrassed, whatever happens to 'the customers always right, I won't be returning.

Had to queue over 10 minutes for a table, staff were a bit slow taking our order but the food was good

Been going here for years , fish and chips or a fry goes down well. Small narrow cafe so not really suitable for wheel chairs and buggies unfortunately.

Good value for money for fast food served by friendly staff. Very clean and God service. Not cordon bleu but very good when you need something quickly
