Caffè Nero in Sunderland

I'm not really into the large hot drinks cafe chains, but I have to say I find that Cafe Nero has better quality of food and the decaf coffee is really good. Their hot chocolate is also really nice as it's not very sweet and has a high cocoa content so doesn't taste like a weak imitation of drinking chocolate.

One member of staff serving with a queue of 4 people 4pm. He was a barista in training and left to deal with the queue while the senior staff filled in her paperwork. Appalling! He was exceptionally pleasant in a very stressful situation. I've visited this coffee shop multiple times and love it but this time it was scruffy. Get more staff!

The place was packed and feeling congested. The service, therefore, was slow. I had to wait 7 minutes just for a sausage to be warmed up.

Good offering of food and drink, but there is a desperate need of more staff here. 2 baristas on a Saturday afternoon trying to clean 10-12 vacated tables as well as serve customers. The female serving had to go into the kitchen to get clean plates, as they didn't seem to be able to do everything at once, hence the need for more staff.

Usually love cafe Nero but this time it wasn't good. The service was terrible but not the fault of the staff. There was only a trainee who couldn't make all of the drinks and another member of staff who didn't seem to have much more experience. The staff seemed stressed and fed up. One of the drinks was not well made either as it's my daughters favourite drink and she said it was awful. The management is at fault here for putting the staff in this situation in a bust city center venue. When staff are struggling, it passes onto customers

Slowest service ever too busy talking to a friend to quicken up . Two people with suitcases the coffee shop is beside a train station indicating people may be in a hurry but staff need a rocket or learn how to multi task. I left after 12 mins only one guy in front of me wanting 2 coffees,a tea and 2 pastries, go to a pub order two coffees and a breakfast 10 mins later full breakfast at your table . After 12 mins the guy was still waiting for his second coffee . I left never to return Greggs coffee is just as good and service is 10x quicker.

We visited for breakfast on a Sunday morning, but when we arrived at 10.20am there were no breakfast sandwiches left, which was a bit disappointing for a weekend. Ended up with lemon meringue cheesecake for breakfast - very lovely and decadent, but not what we were wanting. Nice coffee though, and the barista was friendly and helpful.

Absolute disgrace of a place. A busy Saturday morning and there was only one poor member of staff who was worked of her feet. Give the girl her due, I think her name was Jess, she was working like a Trojan. How can you expect someone to serve customers, clear tables. How can a big company like this have such a poor policy on staff coverage and expect one member of staff to do all this on her own. Is there no health and safety issue here with lone working.

Staff are appalling, cafe is dirty, tables not cleared nd cleaned & Eastern Europeans sitting with a bottle of water doing drug deals…not a nice place to have a coffee!!

Excellent service from the lady, nice pot of tea, and the chocolate fudge cake is to die for fairly priced. I would highly recommend it if you're waiting to meet someone off the train or just a catch-up pop in beautiful place x

Don’t know what has gone wrong in this outlet but the place needs a good clean, the staff need to smarten themselves up, stop talking to each other and clear and clean tables. And an injection of pace for the actual service wouldn’t go amiss; it’s like watching a non action movie in slow motion. And chase the scruffs that seem to be hanging about these days; they can afford the coffee that goes up in price everytime I visit but not a bar of soap by the looks of them.

Food and coffe was nice. Service was standard. Atmosphere ok apart from sticky tables, dirty chairs and cutlery and an overall air of grubbiness. Needs a deep clean.

Staff pleasant enough, but place was pretty filthy. Coffee and cake for 2 around £15, fair enough, but I have to sit in someone else's filth? Dirty forks, tables, seats...just not good enough at all. Shame, as the coffee and cake were good. Seems greedy to charge top whack, but skimp on cleaning.

My favourite place to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee in Sunderland City centre. Always manage to get a comfy seat. Good selection of food and cakes are beautiful too.

Pretty good coffee and tea. There's a loyalty scheme and easy pay with their app. The cronut things are really good if you have a sweet tooth. My biggest gripe is it's a bit devoid of personality and the staff are more concerned about chatting to each other than serving customers or clearing and cleaning, on the days I visited we were in quite early and the place was grotty. The counter is very high and in a narrow corridor, not sure how folk in wheelchairs get on.

People working 8/9 days doing all they can yet being treated like trash been going 6 months everyday seen 10 members of staff leave who were all excellent! Underpaid and over worked! The area manger should be fired for being so unprofessional Appreciate your staff for the hard work they put in! Put me off the brand as a customer who comes everyday unethical in every way

I’ve been a regular for 4 years now, it is my #1 cafe. the staff are friendly, the coffee is great, the prices are great, and they come out with offers and new items quite regularly and they’re really good

Both my coffees for take away were totally wrong really upsetting as I didn’t have time to go back due to going to work. I specified a coconut milk latte for my milk allergy and received a hot chocolate with whole milk! And received an iced hot chocolate instead of mocha when i also paid for am extra shot! Won’t be back waste of £10.

Pleased the staff has been replaced. The old ones used to abuse their positions by having family in. Very brazen and disrespectful. This makes way for new talent and opportunities.

A lovely quiet cafe to enjoy my drink and get in from the cold

I felt bad for the employee. It appeared that he was working on his own on a Bank Holiday Sunday. I don't know how he could remain pleasant with such a long queue. This location often appears to be understaffed.

Friendly welcoming servers. Great drink options and good variety of hot and cold snacks and cakes. Need to pay more attention to cleaning vacated tables so that people have to stand with their order trying to find somewhere to sit. Other always worth a visit.

Honestly if it wasn't for the dirt and lack of staff this place would do even better than it does. The management who has just left was crying out for help (she'll be a valued member of staff at her new job), not the staff's fault but the owners. Sort your shop out. We'll not be back untill it's clean and staffed properly.

Convenient location. Only a minute's walk from Sunderland station. Good hygiene. Food and drinks are tasty.

Great coffee and nice area to sit

Half of order was missing and people in cafe were as useful as a chocolate fire guard. Said stuff wasn't on the order but had reciept they printed off in front of us. Will never use again and do not recommend.

Got in this morning before door was locked behind us, short staffed and qujre right the girl needed a break. Dont think everyone in there should have been served their coffee in take out mugs, not much point staying if you drinking out of cartons . Cafe nero need to get thr staffing sorted.

The staff and coffee at Caffe Nero cannot be faulted - both are excellent. It's also a very nice location with some lovely, comfortable seating. The only things stopping it getting five stars are the somewhat limited number of chairs & tables, and the food selection, which pales in comparison to somewhere like Starbucks and Costa, especially if you require gluten-free options. The cakes are lovely, though.

First time visiting service and cappuccino was great

Visited when returning Sunderland. Needs a good clean. Behind settees never seen a brush or hoover for a long time. Food on the floor and just left. Won't be hurrying back. Shame as in a decent location.

Lovely, busy shop but it's understaffed. Sad to see same poor lass on duty, by herself, every day! She's doing an amazing job...give her a pay rise and a few days off Nero's!

My favourite place to drink my coffee and have a cake. It's not many places I can buy a cake from to satisfy my taste buds. I don't like too sweet or dry cakes and it's not the case in Café Nero. I love my cortado and the new pistachio frappé is divine.

It's restrictively expensive which I think is why it isn't as popular as Gregg's. Some way their coffee is way better than Gregg's. Not for me I prefer Gregg's coffee maybe that's partly because of cost. £1.85 for a coffee in Gregg's now that's dear enough.

Looking around it's only 9.15am the cafe has crumbs all over I think they need a cleaner to hoover under furniture , window cills needa wash bit grubby.

Waited 15 minutes to be served no apology for wait, food was average 2 flat paintings with hardly any filling and certainly no service with a smile or niceties. Won't be returning

Went at lunchtime. Very busy. Tea was a teabag in a cup so quite strong by time paid and removed bag. £5.40 for small cup tea and 1 1/2 sausages in a bun. Tasted good though .
