I had a pot of tea with scones, cream and jam and sat and enjoyed them outside in the sunshine watching the world go by on Palace Green. One of the joys of retirement! The following day I had an Americano coffee and sat and enjoyed that too. Service is a bit like the NT cafeterias; slow, and there always seems to be more staff behind the counter doing stuff other than serving customers. Nevertheless would recommend, in particular because of its location.

We visited this cafe last week, beautiful day so we sat outside on four seats placed together but absent of a table. After avoiding our waves, the waitress finally came over to tell us she could not take our order as we didn’t have a table, she then went inside, I thought to get another light weight table for us. She emerged with the rudest most ignorant Scottish woman I’ve ever met, who informed us not only did we not have a table but she wanted our seats to take inside. Having already looked inside I knew there where plenty of empty seats inside already !. As we stood up she whipped the seats away complaining about people rearranging them !.

So I walk into this place and ask the short-haired woman behind the counter if I can have a coffee. She replies, 'Sure, take a seat. I' ll come and take your order.' I walk into the seating area and do as instructed. I can see her chatting away with a colleague behind the counter. The place is practically empty, so I assume that it won't be long before she comes round and takes my order. But no - I wait and wait and wait and wait (while the woman continues chatting with her colleague). Finally, she walks into the dinning room, but instead of taking my order she approaches one of the other three customers, asks them something and then goes back to the kitchen. With service like that, no wonder the place doesn't attract any clients.

Definitely in the running for the least welcoming place we’ve visited, this place caught our eye after a visit to Durham Cathedral. Couldn't ask for a better location, as it’s situated at the side of the quad, opposite the Cathedral. This is a UNESCO world heritage site, and being intrigued by the stone sign over the door reading “Hospitale” we entered to find it was in fact a licenced café. The sign for the Café on the outside with the opening hours had been covered by chairs (photo) and the impression was that staff were closing up despite the time being before 3pm.

Decent cafe on Palace Green, but there are very few tables outside which tend to be never free. The coffee is good, so are their soups. Give it a try if you're in the area and in need for a break. It's rather loud, so perhaps not the ideal place for a business coffee place.

On first sight this place is unwelcoming. A rather sad looking selection of cakes was on show, and then you go into the café itself and the décor is uninspiring and rather depressing. Hardly service with a smile, and another table got our drinks, but luckily all parties realised the mix up. I had a scone - not bad, and a good hot chocolate. My mother had a toasted teacake, which she could not finish, so I had some of it and it was the worst toasted teacake I have ever tasted. They had toasted it as you would a toasted sandwich. It tasted burnt and bland. Very little care was taken over any presentation. I shall not be going back there.

Supposedly this Cafe is table service, but there are no menus on the outside tables, and you only find out that it is table service only when you go inside to see what is on offer. Once armed with menu you have a long wait until someone decides to take your order. Then bits of it are missing. Scone & cream came without cream, and the tea (when it arrived) came without milk. Nobody seemed to care a jot, and despite the lovely weather we never went back during our stay.

Best warm cheese scone I've ever had and fully filled cheese, chicken and bacon sandwich, excellent, good prices for what we had. They need to have signs outside saying waitress service and menus on the table because its confusing going in to the counter to then be told to take a menu and once waitress sees you with it she will come to take the order?,, just crams the entrance and gets people in the waitresses way,

Three staff and not many visitors; nevertheless, we had to wait a while to be assigned a place. When this finally happened we were given a menu, though we said that we knew what we wanted. We waited a further while for our order to be taken, and then some more to be served (1/3 of items forgotten, even then). When we had finished - or not, in my case - we waited for someone to give us a bill. I let my wife go on ahead while I strolled up to the cash register - they seemed surprised that I hadn't been given a bill. Eventually they worked out the cost, and I paid; I then mentioned that the toasted teacake was not very edible. They didn't ask for more information, just said that most people liked them. Not an experience we want to repeat.

Having read other reviews, I'm a little surprised at the negativity & it astounds me why people don't deal with issues there & then to get a resolution rather than use sites such as this as a forum. We walked up to the cathedral & had no idea this cafe was here whilst blustery it was warm so we opted for an outdoor seat, yes the dining tables & chairs are on artificial grass but it overlooks the lovely palace green which is very real & offers nice views of the historic architecture. Our table had just been vacated & was littered with dishes & debris & acknowledged & cleaned within minutes, our order was taken & arrived quite quickly, the lattes were red hot & very milky which I love as the big chains tend to overpower you with the amount of coffee, the fruit scone was delicious & service was good they even acknowledged the dog & brought her some water, plenty of indoor seating available too & it wasn't overly busy, my only negative was trying to pay, no one was around & didn't wish to leave the money in case someone decided to take it or it blew away as it was quite blustery, waited to catch someone's eye & handed the bill to her. The cafe is in an enviable location but not accessible for anyone with mobility problems due to the steep hill up to the cathedral. Will definitely return

The Cafe on the Green is on Palace Green, where it has the Cathedral on one side and Durham Castle on the other - so it is in a really superb location and therefore attracts a large number of clients. Service is reasonable though it can get exceedingly busy as it attracts tourists, students and other local people on a regular basis.

Five of us called after a visit to castle. It was busy when we entered but we still got friendly welcome. Chairs are not to comfortable but sturdy and good tables. Drinks seemed to take a little while to arrive but where very nice and hot. Bill arrived on a tray with a mint for each of us.

Fascinating café on our way to the cathedral. The history is intriguing and well displayed on the blackboard near the entrance. Principally, it served as an almshouse. Food and service all fine. We had two toddlers who were welcomed. Views onto the Cathedral and its green (owned by university) excellent.

Visited the cafe for a quick coffee and cake. For the position and building, the cafe has very little atmosphere and is most uncomfortable. Ordered a hot chocolate with marshmallows and cream, a lemon cake, a tea, a slice of traybake and a glass of water. The cake was fine although tasted like it had been left out ((at least)) a day. Hot chocolate- either then cream or the milk was sour. Advised the waitress who offered to change although by that time has been well and truly put off!Glass of water...how can that go wrong..... Dirty glass!! Smelled like it had been 'cleaned' with a dirty cloth. Service standard, food and drink extremely poor quality. Such a shame to waste a lovely spot in the city

Visited for lunch ,3 adults and sleeping baby in a stroller. firstly we were asked to leave baby in the corridor, when we said no the waitress was very rude and showed is to a tiny table muttering that there really was nowhere for a pram even though there were only 2 other tables occupied on a cold wet Monday afternoon. We left . Won't be back

This was a real find on a busy return-to-uni Sunday, where the rest of Durham seemed to be heaving. We had a baked potato with extras and a toasted sandwich with garnish. Nice. The atmosphere is very pleasant and I would certainly recommend. Charming service, too.

I am glad I chose this place to have a good warm meal, especially after mass. The cafe has got bits and pieces of history and there beautiful paintings hung on the walls which made the place special. The food is great and the ambience would be enhanced if the space outdoor was opened to Public. At the moment it was not available due to some renovation works.I was greeted and served by this beautiful lady with an infectious smile and her name is Julie. She is warm and caring.Yes, I will be back!RegardsRachellSingapore

After a lovely walk around the Cathedral and grounds my husband and decided we needed cake and coffee. This was very handy as just a short walk across the green at the front of the Cathedral. It wasn't very busy but they do seat customers and it is a table service so you don't need to worry about having food and no where to seat. There were plenty of choices on the menu and they offer gluten free and ask customers to tell them about allergies in order to try and accommodate them ! The cakes are delicious and taste homemade.Service is quick and it is a relaxed atmosphere. Not too expensive either.

Cafe on the Green has a history few others can match. The building was established in the 12th Century and lies between Durham Castle and Cathedral on the edge of the large lawned area known as Palace Green. It is a great stop off place for visitors to either of the most famous places in the North East of England. The cafe is basically a coffee and cakes place but does offer a range of light meals and drinks. It outlooks the historic heart of Durham and is worth a visit for anyone in the vicinity.

Lovely cafe right on the Palace Green in the heart of historic Durham. We turned up late on a Sunday afternoon having had an unfortunate experience in another city restaurant and walked out. Our grumpy demeanours soon passed as the cheerful and helpful ladies sorted us out with toasties and cakes along with delicious coffee. Should have gone here first!

Called in mid-morning after visiting the cathedral. Only wanted coffee but there was a lovely smell of home cooking. A pleasant waitress attended to us and was very helpful with directions. The café wasn't particularly busy but I can imagine it being a little cramped when it's busy as there are lots of chairs in proportion to the size of the room.A great location and pleasant staff. Could do with the quaint leaded windows cleaning as the insides had some cobwebs.

At £28 per person from one of the top hotels in the North East I was expecting a lot better, 4 small finger sandwiches each, 4 scones and small cakes. Not a lot of effort and no selection of desserts
