Café Mercy in Newcastle upon Tyne

Previous reviews read, we walked to Café Mercy on a Sunday lunch time for some cocktails. A friendly greeting by the bar person and two free glasses of water were brought to the table. We were informed that it had been a busy weekend so the small plates (food option) were limited. The bar person created four incredible cocktails. One not on the menu. The ambience was lovely, vinyl records playing in the background, the bar person was great and we had amazing cocktails. Would highly recommend a visit.

Great venue, we were visiting a friend in the city and wanted to visit a good cocktail bar. This place didn’t disappoint! Inviting atmosphere and attentive staff. They even had crodino which we don’t see in bars often, we will return when back in Newcastle☺️ 🥂

I enjoyed visiting Cafe Mercy on Grey Street in Newcastle for a couple cocktails with friends. We were walk-in guests, not having pre-booked, but were allocated a table. The staff had lots of banter and it proved an enjoyable place to stay for a couple of drinks.

Cafe Mercy is a refreshing retreat from the noise and chaos of Newcastle on a weekend. For those seeking a refined and quiet atmosphere, options in the city are few, but Cafe Mercy stands out. The staff are exceptionally gracious, professional, and welcoming, creating an experience that feels both genuine and inviting. The cocktail menu is extensive, with the added bonus that the team are happy to mix drinks off-menu. The cocktails are well made and the prices are reasonable. A special mention goes to the waitress who served our table during our visit. If only I had her name.

It has a lovely vibe in the atmosphere and it has friendly staff. Worth the visit.

Fantastic service. My partner had a negroni for the first time but wasn't so fond of it, however they offered for a replacement straight away and gave us water when we came in. Staff are friendly, atmosphere is great and drinks are good. Thank you cafe mercy for today's experience

Perfect spot for evening drinks. Lovely atmosphere with good music that wasn't too loud so you could still have a conversation with friends. Staff were so attentive and kind and even recommended drinks after getting to know us, the mirror ball lemon spritz was delicious and perfect if you're a swiftie! Will be back again!

We popped into Cafe Mercy for coffee and to shelter from the rain. Staff were so welcoming we stayed for lunch, 3 small plates for £16. Great coffee, great food, and they played vinyl. We loved it. Thank you.

Had an amazing experience at Café Mercy! The service was top-notch—friendly, attentive, and quick. Pre dinner drinks, our first time at Mercy - what an absolute gem. My partner loved the basil gin smash, and the praline old fashioned I had was perfect. Great cocktails, great vibe—highly recommend! Thanks team Mercy!

Best cocktails in Newcastle & the staff are exceptional- especially James who even though was super busy took time to make every single person feel special.

My partner and I came for a "quick" cocktail today, expecting to be in and out within half an hour. Unfortunately it was over half an hour until we received our 2 cocktails. The service itself was good and servers very friendly, but to wait that amount of time for a couple of drinks is a bit of a joke. There wasn't even an acknowledgement that we'd waited that long. The drinks were okay but the Bloody Mary was 90% ice and not spicy enough. We were in a bit of a hurry so I didn't check the bill but I believe there was a 10% service charge added; £22 for a margarita and half a bloody Mary. Plenty of better places to go

Great location and friendly staff

Now a new venture opens as Café Mercy a nice little cocktail bar great service very helpful and friendly staff. The Decor has been thoroughly changed, all cream and pink definitely for the ladies but don't let that stop you visiting as It's the sort of place where you can't help but make new friends. A good atmosphere good music I would definitely recommend it for a change of pace if you're in town

Lovey little pub on way to theatre. Had a lovely gin ( but check cost as got I got a double without asking!! Big mistake) Friendly and helpful staff, nice to sit and have a relaxing chat with hubby.

Wonderful to be somewhere with genuine imported Italian beer. Menabrea on draft cocktails amazing. Definitely coming back to try the food. Dont go for made in UK continental beer. Not genuine

We almost walked past here because it was so quiet but I'm so glad we went in. The food and wine were fantastic. We had the Spanish platter and a couple of tapas and a brilliant bottle of Portuguese red, would definitely recommend

If you love GIN it's a must visit place..very friendly and helpful staff totally recommend.

Went in by chance as a neighbouring restaurant couldn't fit us in for 2 hours. Best move ever! So many gins to choose from I had a beer instead! I found excellent tapas, imaginative, delicious and beautifully made and presented. I have to go back to work my way through the menu. Prawns in bacon are sublime!

This is a very beautiful restaurant on Grey Street with beautiful food, wines and a selection of gins(if you like gin). Service is very attentive and friendly. This is a restaurant I would bring someone with view to impressing them. My only criticism was that on the day I visited, it was freezing and there didn't seem to be a source of heating, radiators etc. So where a coat or a thick jumper.

Lovely little bar up grey street was a bit chilly outside so we got a table by the window great place to people watch ,I loved all the gins but my partner wasn't keen as doest like gin and only a couple of beers which he wasn't overly keen on but I'd definitely go again, much prefer the smaller bars only spoiled it for us was the 4 people behind us that were very loud

Great drinking spot with choice of gins available. I was made a special drink which tasted lush. Defo would go back, friendly service. On a plus, Drinks are made with Love!

After not being able to come for so long I returned to try a new menu of delicious drinks. Any gin with Nordic blue tonic is a must try, especially 48 it's like a tropical dream! The food smelled so amazing we must come back for more.

Nice little Gin bar with a wide selection of drinks as well as some Tapas. Ideal place for Gin fanatics. Staff are friendly and approachable wearing a smile on their faces at all times. Highly recommend, there's something for everyone!

Amazing restaurant, which was recommended to us by friends. We opted for the 2 course meal, superb value of £22. We ordered the pate off the Al a carte menu as an extra and Spanish onion soup for starters along with fillet steak (£6 extra) and chicken for mains. Followed by clementine cheese cake. Delicious 😊 Best pate and fillet steak ever, which is some accolade as I have dined at the finest of cuisines. Excellent waiter service. Highly recommended as its a little gem!

We absolutely love going to Decantus! The atmosphere is fantastic, staff are brilliant and the drinks are delicious! It is always our go to after dinner when we are out in Newcastle! 👍🙂

Great bar with an excellent range of gins (although not so many whiskies). Friendly and knowledgeable staff, more than happy to give recommendations. Cosy and pleasant atmosphere, a bit quieter than some of the other options. Have been a few times now and will certainly continue to go back.

Lovely little place! Please 🙏 if you know some Spanish and want a little practice go thank the chef for your food (which is divine), you'll be rewarded with a happy little man with a happy tale to tell. You'll find yourself going back to decantus time and time again... In the quiet times for the atmosphere and the impressive cocktail list.

Been here a couple of times. The customer service is impeccable and consistent, they have a great tapas selection and an almost endless selection of gins. Really reasonably priced considering where they are based, great ambiance. I'm glad independent gems like this have survived the pandemic.

Always excellent service - even when it is only a coke!

Might be a good place for gin but not for food, very basic menu and served even more basic,no effort on presentation and very bland taste, would definitely not eat here again.

Thought Decantus would serve reasonably good food but forget ordering their ‘ tapas’ as it was very expensive and extremely poor quality! Our patatas bravas were like shriveled bits of old potato, shrimp was straight out of the packet and the chorizo simply tasted ‘odd’! The overall presentation left us feeling like we had been ripped off. Perhaps stick to drinks. The staff were, however, polite throughout.

Great food, and absolutely lovely staff!

The Gin is spectacular, so much gin. There is gin for days. The gin is worth every penny paid. The tapas was on form, not spectacular but the chef knew his business. The staff was on point fast and friendly plus witty when required. The only negative was the volume of the music when trying to converse was ibiza club level.

Cracking Gin bar and restaurant

Beautiful meal of chicken stuffed with dates and pine nuts in a mushroom cream sauce delicious.

It's lovely to be able to visit this brilliant tapas and gin bar again. The outdoor tables are a great addition, while the food, drinks and service are as good as ever.

Beautiful bar, fantastic service. Relaxing and still with a good atmosphere

If you like gin then there is no better place in the city centre. They also serve complimentary tapas with each round of drinks until 10pm. Edit: 10th July - you genuinely can't get a better a gin. So glad this place is still open given the current climate and following the recommended restrictions. We'll be back again!

First day open after three months of lockdown... good service and drinks. They seemed to have the covid-19 safety measures well in place and friendly staff
