Cafe in the Crypt in City of London, Westminster

Cafeteria style queue. Never been before, went today so first and last time. Choice of 4 hot lunches, only two available, others; 3rd available in 10-15minutes, the other not available at all (13.30 hours). Expensive, noisey and staff more interested in doing something else apart from dealing with customers. Worked out at £27 each for main course and medium size glass of house wine. Much better deals elsewhere!

I needed to kill time and was looking for a coffee when I stumbled upon this place. You can access it from outside the church. There's a shop with lots of London souvenirs to buy. The café/restaurant is located in the crypt, with its tombstones, exposed brick, and vaulted ceiling. Very pretty. I think they have jazz sessions. I only had a coffee with carrot cake, and the service is self-service. The prices are reasonable for London. The staff is very friendly. A very charming place.

Genuinely, genuinely so good! The fish and chips were so fresh but the jacket potatoes were also very delicious. All of the food was fresh actually. The atmosphere was pleasant, the staff was very polite, friendly and they paid attention to you and answer any menu questions. Free water as well. You could take your time here, I even got some time to get on my laptop and do some work. I highly recommend this spot in between museum trips such as the National galleries. The chocolate cake wasn’t very fudgy but it was good with the frosting.

The great charm of this place is its location - in the basement of the church with beautiful architecture. It is a café that serves meals that are always very busy and at very uninviting prices.

The restaurant under the church can be walked down from the church, or from the stairs or elevator on the outside of the church. I think the food is quite delicious, and there are seats to sit and rest. The restaurant feels a bit like a buffet. You queue up with a tray. After selecting the food you want, tell the staff and they will help you pick it up. Follow the queue and you will find the checkout counter and you can pay! I like coming here before church concerts or before and after going to the National Gallery.

It wasn’t too crowded when I went before noon. Nice place to take a break. Scones were not available so I couldn’t try.

Tasty food, but not large variety. Calm atmosphere and not too busy with people. The place isn't anything special though.

We just stopped for a coffee and chocolate tea. You have toilets available and the setting is really nice. You can eat on site.

Beautiful location with charming architecture. I ordered the fish and chips, which were a bit pricey at £19.50, but unfortunately, they were greasy and lacked flavor—I didn't enjoy the meal. The lentil soup, on the other hand, was decent.

The clue is in the name, this is a self service cafe, not a restaurant. Interesting location, if a bit busy, food was nice, with good portion sizes, but I couldn't bear to wait while they made a coffee, so I had my first cup of tea in about 4 years!

Popped on here before heading to the Haymarket theatre. Large place , quite busy when we were there. We had steak and ale pie chips and peas. Was a bit pricey at nearly £20 , but was nice. They also do some vegan options as well as cakes and puddings . Was served quickly. Would go here again .

Takes ages to get a drink as you have to queue behind people getting food.

The setting of the crypt cafe is cute but overall it is very busy and for the price you get in line cafeteria style with a tray and are served; however, you must find your own table and clean up after yourself as there is no service. Overall, the meat pie was tasty but the gluten free brownie my friend had for tea was not enjoyable.

Beautiful place that is worth a visit. We went a Saturday lunchtime which was busy. Mum had a jacket potato and beans, which was cold despite the fact they'd just topped up the beans. The fish looked as though it was overcooked, so it didn't appeal to us. So food disappointing

Food is terrible now, paid £ 17.00 for a small pie and a spoonful of mushy veg., never again! The food used to be so good there, definitely gone downhill!

Cool cafe when you really think of it. Service was good but the food is expensive for what it is. If you want to visit skip the food and opt for a coffee or something.

Worth visiting purely for its location in the crypt of St Martins church. Was very busy, lots of tables but almost all occupied. A popular choice to visit, but bear in mind, you're walking on grave stones.

Amazing place highly recommended

I usually get a soup for dinner here before I attend a Concert, but today decided to get lunch. I was hoping for soup but they were out by the time I got to the counter, then I got a Jacket Potato instead, but it was disappointing. There was no Vegan cheese (which is fine but some vegan butter or alternative would've been nice), so I only had a potato with a scoop of baked beans and some mixed green salad that had no dressing on. To top it, that was £10. 😳 I could've made that at home for £1.80. Next time, I won't bother if they don't have the Soup! 🤪 That being said, it's a lovely venue and unique in London.

It was the end of the service window, so limited options. The food that they had was flavorful and delicious. Enjoyed the mince pie and peppermint tea. It's probably the best cooked cabbage I've ever had!

The cafe at the Crypt was extremely busy when I and a friend visited on 22nd December about 3.30 pm and we had to share a table with two other people. That wasn’t a problem, the problem was that there were no trays to use, the attitude of several staff and one in particular. I was told by two members of staff that trays were at the beginning of the counter, when they were clearly not. Another said sorry but they were very busy and trays would be availabe “soon”. My friend is frail and so sat down while I tried to juggle getting two hot plates of food and drinks without a tray. The person in the queue next to me commented about how surly the server behind the counter was when I asked for pizza. I was so flustered that when I got to the cashier, with one plate of hot food, two mini bottles of wine and an alert buzzer for pizza, that I forgot to take my receipt after paying. The cashier knew I was having pizza but did not call me back to give me the receipt. When I deposited the one plate of food and wine with my friend, I returned to the counter to get glasses and when I got back to the table my friend showed me that one of the bottles of wine was a short measure, so I had to return to the counter to exchange it. The buzzer for the pizza went off and I went to collect it, but your surly member of staff refused to give it to me. I admit I then vented my frustration, pointing out to her that there - still - were no trays, that my plate of hot food was going cold, that the pizza was sitting there also going cold and did she not think she was being unreasonable? Her reply was that I was being aggressive and had been aggressive to other members of staff too. I had to return to the cashier to get the receipt and back again to the food counter to collect the pizza. Meanwhile, my plate of food was cooling and I had to leave half of the red cabbage as it went completely cold as I was eating it. The turkey pie was nice though!

Nice place to visit for a coffee, but it can get very busy.

Not known by many tourists, although busy it's a welcome sanctuary to get away from the crowds and relax

10/10 would go here again hot chocolate was average but the victoria sponge cake was another level would reccomend if your near the area

I have been coming to St Martins for 30 years. The cafe in the crypt is going downhill. Yesterday was the last time I will ever have their Christmas dinner. It was insipid and was tasteless, no seasoning, roast potatoes substituted with chips. I had to go back and ask for peas because they had been left off my plate. The queue for food was long and disorganised, and since the place has become more popular it has lost its charm. Where is the soup and apple crumble option? The toilets are too small for the amount of people and the service is abysmal. I feel sad to say this because I love the place, but I’ve now had two years of disappointing Christmas dinners there and they are £20! They used to be amazing.

It was very busy when I went, had a hard time finding a table. The fact you can eat/drink on top of catacombs is definitely unique. It was mainly an older crowd.

The Café in the Crypt is located beneath St Martin-in-the-Fields church on Trafalgar Square. This café has been here for 30 years. The crypt itself dates back to the 18th century, originally serving as a burial site. In the 1980s, the space was transformed into a café, retaining its original brick-vaulted ceilings and historic tombstones that line the floor. Look down on the floor and you’ll see it’s paved with gravestones!

I received one of the worst pizzas of my life. Extremely disgusting, warm cheese on tasteless, thin dough, with 10 small slices of burnt salami on top. I only ate a tiny piece and left the rest because it was simply inedible. Hours later, the cheese made itself felt. I had to wait a long time for the pizza and there weren't any trays available. Therefore zero points for the service. Only the location had some charm.

Today, the hot meal was, unfortunately, just warm. Disappointing. Coffee delicious, red wine delicious. Company very good, but my supper? I was very disappointed.

Curious cafe to stop and have a drink in self-service mode. Good cafes, there is also some food. Over time it is just another cafeteria, perhaps the touch of originality has faded.

Nice place close to Trafalgar Square and the national gallery ! Cheaper than other coffees and offers the architecture of a crypt while drinking a traditional english tea ! My friend loved it

Having had excellent experience when attending evening shows, went back for lunchtime. What a difference! Waited 15 mins to queue up for a cup of tea and the pizzas we ordered took 30 mins - one ready 10 mins before the other so was sitting on counter over cooking under the heaters! Luckily we noticed, so went and retrieved it. Meant we ate at different times. Not one member of staff had a smile. Tables were left uncleared. One chair had drink spilt on it. Yes, it was busy but not that overwhelming with customers. Shame as it's a lovely venue but I wouldn't bother for lunch.

I got confused by a big sign that said ‘enter here’ and led to a locked door but I found the real entrance on the other side. The food is way better than it ought to be though staff seemed to be training and weren’t quite completely on top of things. Very unique experience and very easy to just do.

Just across the street from Trafalgar Square! Unique lunch place. My husband & daughter loved their coronation chicken sandwiches. I had a tuna jacked potato & wanted to add cheese but they said they couldn’t ☹️ which wasn’t very accommodating & the reason I am only giving them 4/5.

Curious place with a lot of charm to visit. It is a cafe in the crypt of the church where they have self-service salty and sweet food at a very good price, as well as a very delicious coffee. Depending on the day there are concerts and events. Highly recommended to make a stop to recover energy next to Trafalgar Square. Be careful, they don't open early (11:00 am approx) and the hours vary a little depending on the week.

Cute place to grab some sweets, a drink or a bite, surrounded by history. Beautiful ceiling, crypts all over the floor. Good selection but food just okay.

Very crumbly scones for very unreasonable prices! Too loud and very much unworthy of a visit...I could not find any reason to ever come back or recommend this place.

A moment of relaxation from the hustle and bustle upstairs, good coffee and delicious crumbled apples!

Very cool cafe to visit before or after the theatre. Black Amaricano was a bit too bitter and there wasn't any service but the atmosphere was really calm and peaceful and down to the earth.

Nice place under the church. There is quite good food for a normal budget. It's nice to sit and it's relaxing when you've toured the city. You should also make time for church.

Always such a lovely warm atmosphere. Free tap water. Good food. Fascinating surroundings.

A nice little cafe below the church that used to be a hidden gem, now big signs and a gift shop, so more busy now and more tourists. The cafe food is fine and service just ok. It's still fun to wander around and look at the grave markers.

Coffee and the Apple crumble were okay. But the ambience really stood out. Would definitely visit again.

Great place to see the amazing architecture of the subterranean crypt under St Martins in the fields. The cafe has quite a good selection of meals, snacks cakes and drinks including alcoholic beverages. There are bathrooms also. In this space there are also concerts held. There is a gallery but it didn’t have an exhibition at the time.

A group of 8 came her on Thursday 8th August. We recommended it. We were very disappointed the food was lukewarm. We had quiche which was cold. Two.had jacket potatoes and these were not hot. One hsd pizza which was rock.hard. one had fish and chips which was lukewarm. We did complain but was told it was room temperature. I have to say I would not recommend again.

Such a disappointment. Never before was an amazing middle age crypt used to create a low level coffee canteen like this. It would take almost zero effort to turn it into one of the most suggestive and poetic coffee places in the world

The cafe in the Crypt is an enjoyable eating experience in the heart of London's West End and matched with excellent service and friendly staff. The cafe has ample seating and gets very busy during lunchtime, so time your visits carefully. Being in the actual Crypt of St Martin's in the fields, some may feel a bit strange about sharing their lunch with the graves of 18th-century person's who were interred here, but in truth, they offer a historical reference and a talking point. The staff offers very good information regarding potential allergens and intolerance issues that may be contained within their produce, and their service is prompt.

Ran out of two of three entries. Fish and chips were oily and undercooked. Staff less than friendly. Food in general ordinary. Pizza doughy. Atmosphere far better than what is served.
