Cafe in the Crypt in City of London, Westminster

let's call it what it is-- this is a museum cafe. however, a very unique & beautiful one. you basically walk down stairs in this portal in the middle of the sidewalk. nothing looked overly appetizing to me, however, was worth a stop downstairs just to see it.

Hidden beneath a historic church is the crypt. Built in the 18th century, beautiful construction with gravestones visible on the floor! There is a lift to take you down if stairs are not preferable. I was there to watch a country gig. Unfortunately the view and acoustics were not too great. But otherwise a missed opportunity if not explored.

Very good coffee in an atmospheric location.

Ate lunch on our recent trip. Very reasonable prices in a cafeteria style restaurant. Staff is pleasant and anxious to assist. Crowed but not too....a great place to eat while on the go (even though a few of the tables appeared to be gathering spots for the older "regulars").

Actually easy to find. The cafe was good and there’s ample seating and toilets.

Epic live music space. So unique. Great to attend the launch of black deer radio.

This is more of a refectory atmosphere than a café although the vaulted arches do make for an interesting atmosphere. Surprisingly large space but very busy and noisy. Expect to have to circle around a bit before you find a table. The food was very tasty. Try the large salad plate (£7.50 at time of writing) which is, indeed, large! We also enjoyed the quiches.

Good food in an unusual location

A singular place. Worth a visit, combining it with the National Gallery or a walk in the centre. Varied and complete menu.

I was reminded of the catacombs of Hogwarts Legacy and enjoyed the experience of eating in a vault.

Located in a very good part of Westminster. Great atmosphere. It felt nice and calm. Good food and drinks.

I liked it a lot. It works buffet style but you pay for what you want. It's cheap for London. We paid in cash, although they have a dataphone. They have WiFi and thank goodness, because down in the crypt there is no coverage. There was no concert, because we went to eat. It is a picturesque place, eating in an old church crypt.

I hidden gym in the heart of London. The crypt is a amazingly cool vibe. Until you've been here, you won't understand what I'm saying. It is a very interesting space and I love the fact that they've turned it into a thriving business.

I spent £15 here for a big hot lunch including pudding and it was delicious. The place was busy but there was almost no queue at for food at the buffet.

Near Trafalgar Square you can find this special location. You order to the staff of the buffet your desired options, and also select the ingredients of your own salad. Good atmosphere, variety of recipes, and appropriate prices to enjoy your meal in a local environment.

I went during the day and was extremely disappointed. I’d call this cafeteria in the crypt rather than cafe. It looks great in photos, but very underwhelming in person. I could see it being gorgeous at night.

What a find, where else can you eat and drink for 3 at under £40? No need to book drop in and view the gallery, church and chapels. Do a bit of brass rubbing for a few pounds. Out of the rain, central london, cheap and amazing quality

The staff didn’t know what’s in the Victoria sponge cake (very dry) nor what the apple crumble (looks like baby poo) is called. I was drawn into this cafe because of the name and was greatly disappointed with the dessert selections - not a true afternoon tea experience. The manager should let the staff tasted the food that they serve.

Been there for a live music event, very bad service, tables put close together with people having no view of the stage.

I live well north of Watford. the very few times I have visited has always been very good.

St Martins is one of the best places. Great food fabulous gothic ambience and lovely toilets. If you have snarky teens in tow take them here. Eating in an actual crypt on a floor made up of actual tombstones should shut them down for a bit. Also St Martins has been supporting homeless people in London for centuries. They are awesome. The church is beautiful and the music wonderful. I would like the UK to be run by St Martins. Remember to make a decent donation if you can.

Good, casual cafe-restaurant. Great location by Trafalgar Square. Moderately priced canteen style food (we enjoyed the roast chicken.) The Gothic architecture makes up for the chipboard tables and rather basic seating.

We ordered cake who doesn't like cake? we do... from here.... rubbery cake and the soup formed a skin by the time we brought it to the table.. Buy the way we left most of the cake, and and they don't like to take cash... Remember cash is king!!!

A perfect place to stop in the middle of London

It is more like a luxurious canteen but the food was great, staff helpful and the atmosphere as supposed to be for a crypt. I recommend it. Plus, there is a shop with nice souvenirs.

We discovered this fast casual cafe many years ago and always make a stop while in this part of London. Love the atmosphere beneath the church. It offers a nice respite from the drizzle and the crowded streets above. We noticed that the lights are brighter than before and must be LED now. This time, I was in a bit of a hurry and opted for pizza and a latte. The servers were very busy and seemed to appreciate a smile and a thank you. The young man at the coffee station was being trained and it was nice to see his mate walk him through the process of making a latte. Mine was delicious. Be sure to stop by the gift shop on the way out.

Came here on a trip to London, although the location is nice, it is very much like school dinners with basic chicken and chips costing £16 for it to be cold.

This is a lovely place with a lovely atmosphere & I know that a lot of the Money goes to help the homeless, but the prices relatively recently, in my opinion, have gone way too high to justify, there really needs to be a lower price section of maybe sandwiches or something, maybe even from a vending machine. I find it hard to justify spending over £12 on a very nice apple crumble & Custard and a coffee, which seemed to be one of the cheapest options there.

It's a lovely, hidden caffe in the crypt below the historic church in Trafalgar Square! Somehow, the thought of resting bodies underneath the floor of the coffee doesn't allow me to enjoy any food in here. Could not convince myself, very cosy and relaxing atmosphere but not for eating or drinking, at least not for me. It's great to visit, though! It's a bit sad that the names and notes on the floor are getting ruined. Some are really hard to read already. Interesting place and definitely worth visiting.

A nice place for a light lunch , freshly prepared rolls, wraps, cakes . Menu appeared to be limited to the above, but that suited us fine, fast service , good atmosphere .

Lugar diferente para tomar un café. Es una antigua cripta acondicionada para desayunos, comidas y eventos. Es curiosa la experiencia ya que el suelo de la cripta sigue conteniendo las lápidas antiguas. Lo recomiendo!

Popped in for a quick brekkie at opening time, 10:00am on a Saturday morning. I was really disappointed with the range of food at that time. Most of the service area was empty except for a few cakes. I ended up having the only food items available, croissants and Patel de Nata. It was not the best croissant I’ve had, more like the sort you buy from a supermarket and bake at home. The pastel de nata custard was very soft and eggy, not a pleasant taste for someone who doesn’t like eggs! But the atmosphere is superb. Lots of atmospheric arches in the crypt with lovely lighting. As I was leaving families with small children were arriving for a carol service. There are lots of events.

We went for a light lunch after visiting the David Hockney portraits exhibition at the NPG. So the café is in the crypt therefore in the basement. There are a lift and stairs to access it , so a wheelchair user would be able to access it. There are toilets, but i didn't visit them so do not know how wheelchair friendly they are. Today, at the food counter there was Christmas dinner served. My friend and i opted for a salad. There was a choice of 5 salad composées . We could choose a small or large salad, the large ones being above £7.00. Both salads were delicious and flavoursome. I had a pearl couscous salad with basil, and my friend had an orzo salad. We enjoyed it, after we had coffee and coffee and walnut cake which was really nice. Coming out of the cafe, we wentvto the cafe shop wherevwe bought christmas cards. They are all charity cards. There were other things you could buy such as Christmas tree decorations, biscuit cutters, tea towels all sorts of christmassy and non christmassy things. The food is reasonably priced and itsa good place to meet with a friend, for a lunch, after or before an activity.

Xmas lunch menu. Queued for turkey roulade with 2 sides and gravy and the meals looked good but were sadly barely warm. Very disappointing. Used to be a lot better than this.

A hidden gem in Trafalgar Square a great place to escape the hustle and bustle and have a coffee and a cake. I would highly recommend a visit and I would definitely return.

Cierran muy pronto y entramos justo a la hora que iban a cerrar pero nos dejaron entrar un momento y ver lo precioso que es. Nos hicimos unas fotos y ya. Nos hubiera encantado haber estado tomando algo y disfrutar mas rato del lugar ya que vimos que es una cafetería. Volveremos!

i went there recently with friends for our christmas dinner and it was terrible no stuffing no roast potatoes no gravy and 2 small pieces of turkey a teaspoon of cranberry sauce and 1 pig in blanket it was a disgrace the carrots were cold and i have never seen a yorkshire pudding given with turkey thats wat we got and horesradish i would not recomened anyone to go there for christmas dinner should be reported to the foods standard agency

This was a nice little find whilst in London, could do with a menu or hint at what to expect before you join the queue rather than have people ambling about then joining the queue for food. Staff were very pleasant and the place was very clean and tidy.

Busy and inefficient. Same queue for coffee as food. They need an express.service line for drinks!

Just be aware of long queues for self-service and free tables at lunch time

Decent place to eat in such a busy area plus interesting since it is the actual crypt of the church there. But the food was not great, pretty bland and needed a lot of seasoning. Also pretty expensive for what you get. So if you are just looking for a quick bite it’s ok, but I would come here for a nice meal.

Such a cool concept and nice atmosphere so I was looking forward to trying it, but I was very disappointed by the cold cafeteria style food and overly burnt coffee.

Our first spot to eat in our trip to London and it did not disappoint. The history and atmosphere is historic and really cool to experience. They have a ton of options for food for everyone. We had the classic beef pie and veggies which were very flavorful. A great English experience! I think everyone should make this stop when in Trafalgar Square!

A little creepy feeling but once I entered it quickly disappeared. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Interesting place to sit down, chat and relax while enjoying a nice and expensive cup of coffee under a unique crypt setting. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 The church is named after St. Martin of Tours, a 4th-century bishop known for his charity work. セルフサービスで好きなものを取ってお会計をするシステムです。平日入りましたが、ランチはシニアの方で混んでます。この辺りで外食すると高いので、このボリュームでこの値段なら良いかなと思います。 ランチのジャックポテト、多分日替わりのような気もしますが９£でした。 雰囲気は教会の中で面白いですよ。

In October 2023, two cans of Coke £6.00 😳. We would have had some cake, that looked delicious, however it wasn’t covered by cloches so I couldn’t eat it. Hot food, again was uncovered. On the plus side, the venue is lovely inside (clean and huge!). Ticketed events, advertised on posters, are very reasonably priced!

Just nipped in here for a hot drink before going onto a show, but didn't have any of the food. The cakes looked lovely and fellow patrons seemed to be enjoying them. Arguably one of London's best kept secrets and worth a visit if you want basic food or just a drink in a quieter atmosphere than a fast fiod chain or coffee shop chain, and are near St Martin's Field or Trafalgar Square in London. You can sit and linger as long as you like, without feeling pressurised to move on. Clean, spacious and lots of free seats available. Popular with an older age group, for its value for money, but you have to descend (and ascend) a number of stairs to reach the cafe, so may not be a good option for those with some mobility challenges. Free, clean toilets and no queues.

The coffee was good and the crypt was cool. I went around lunch and they said they did cream tea online but when I was there they didn’t have it.

Nice food and setting but very noisy due to the nature of the setting. Also make sure you go at a quieter time of day. It was quite chaotic when I went and there was a wait to order/pay
