Cafe Bistro in Highland

Absolutely superb. Hot smoked salmon starter was one of the best I’ve had, and the venison main also fantastic. However, the wonderful, relaxed atmosphere and great staff elevate this place still further. Brilliant. Worth a detour.

We went on the Friday night, having booked ahead. Excellent sea bass fillet and baked cod with Parma ham. Lovely atmosphere.

This little cafe was a treat😁 Very cute little place with nice staff. We ordered Mac'n cheese and a toastie and they were both home made and tasted amazing. If you do pass by this town then give this little cafe a try ❤️

This was a great find off the A5 traveling from the Highlands to Edinburgh. The food was delicious and a refreshing change from typical Scottish food. I had the risotto and a feta and olive salad. Highly recommend!

The most amazing food in such a friendly place. The cod wrapped in Parma ham was fantastic. So welcoming and busy too so best to book.

Muy buena experiencia, se nota que es local, negocio familiar, pequeño pero tranquilo, buen ambiente, muy buen trato y la comida deliciosa, además súper bien de precio. El queso de cabra frito estaba tremendo, los haggies y el puddin. El baño estaba limpísimo y además con un detalle que todos los demás deberían de copiar, dos paquetes toallitas tamaño súper.

Das Café Bistro ist Freitag und Samstag Abend geöffnet und definitiv die beste Wahl in Kingussie für ein schönes Abendessen. Man sollte auf jeden Fall vorab reservieren. Das Restaurant hat keine Lizenz zum Alkoholausschank, man kann Alkoholika mitbringen. Wir haben relativ lange auf die einzelnen Gänge gewartet, aber alles wird frisch zubereitet und jedes Gericht war die Wartezeit mehr als wert. Sehr gutes Preis-Leistungsverhältnis!

This is a fantastic bistro restaurant serving excellent freshly cooked food. Very reasonable prices, great service and bring your own bottle all make for a relaxed happy night out. Booking in advance necessary for evening meals.

Absolutely gorgeous meal. I had steak, which was cooked and seasoned to perfection, mushroom sauce in a wee jug at the side, probably the best steak I've had in years. Friend had the pan fried duck, the skin was crisped to perfection, duck cooked perfectly, vegetables on the side were stunning, especially the sweet peas. The potato Rosti was also THE tastiest. Had to have dessert even though we were stuffed and the lemon curd tart was just heaven. Sweet, tart and served with fresh whipped cream and raspberry sauce. Friend had the pavlova which was devoured with lots of oohs and Ah's. Not been so satisfied with a meal in a very long time. Loved the BYOB and no corkage charge. Staff were so friendly and the chef is very gifted. Will for sure be back and highly recommend if you're here, and if you're not, then make sure to plan a visit. You won't be disappointed.

We visited with a group of six friends. We all really enjoyed our meals and desserts. I had the venison which was super tasty and tender. It is a small venue which created a cozy atmosphere.

We walked round the town first before chosing Cafe Bistro and, for a small Scottish town, found it to be surprisingly good for late lunch. Interesting menu included excellent soup, as others have found, and dishes with fresh ingredients all well prepared and presented. Pleasant and efficient service and good clean toilet. Would have liked to try the evening menu but had to move on, unfortunately. Thanks to all.

For one reason or another we didn't get to come here till our last evening of our holiday. A shame as we would probably have gone more than once. The food is superb and the service was efficient and friendly. They don't sell alcohol but you are welcome to bring your own which we found really good. It meant you could have what you liked and didn't have to pay as much for a glass of wine as you would for a whole bottle which is normally the case. If you get a chance book yourselves a table.

Very friendly chef and so was the waiting staff, even though very young and new to the job. Food was very good , oly let down the vegetables, which seemed reheated from Sunday lunch. Pulled off the A9 for a quick bite to eat and we were blown away by the amazing food at cafe bistro! A huge selection of gluten free food, including one of the best carbonaras I’ve ever eaten along with gluten free garlic bread. Extremely good prices and lovely staff. Would wholeheartedly recommend this place to anyone in the area.

Attended here for a three course meal. It is bring your own bottle. Our meal was lovely but not the best. I had the turkey meal which was very dry and nothing special. The pate starter was very nice and a good portion. Not sure if would visit again, however waiting staff pleasant.

We were late for lunch and visited this place. Tried the soup of the day which was lentils soup and it was amazing. We had the following main dishes Creamy mushroom and pea risotto, Spaghetti carbonara & Seafood Tagliatelle. The Tagliatelle was amazing and was left licking the dish. Had wanted to kiss the cooks hand for such a wonderful dish. The staff were very welcoming and cordial.

We had already read the good reviews about this Bistro on TripAdvisor before visiting Kingussie. Once in the village, it soon became apparent this café was the most inviting of the others - and open late afternoon too. We liked the ambience in this little bistro and it had a really good choice of food on offer. We really enjoyed our meal.Would highly recommend.

We walked passed the bistro the evening before we visited. It looked busy, inviting and friendly. We booked dinner for the following evening. We had pate, sea bass, chicken and homemade profiteroles. All good and fresh. Friendly and efficient service. Very pleasant small bistro. No licence so bring your own bottle. Suited us perfectly.

We had a very nice tagliatelle with seafood and we both found it to be both tasty and with well balanced flavours.

Every taste of the dishes were very good. We both love it. Quiet and nice place with good service. The sauce and the cheese on the sides are good, too. We popped in for a lunch. The waitress very welcoming. Seafood Tagliatelle amazing. My wife's jacket was superb. All around us were compliments about the food and service. An absolute diamond of a find.

Wir waren auf Empfehlung unseres Gastgebers hier und hatten einen wunderschönen Abend mit sehr leckerem Essen und einem unterhaltsamen Gespräch mit dem Inhaber und seinem Team! Besonders witzig ist es, dass wir hier unsere eigenen (alkoholischen) Getränke mitbringen durften - wie übrigens alle anderen Gäste in dem kleinen Restaurant auch - da es hier keinen Ausschank für alkoholische Getränke gibt.

We stopped over in a B&B; for the night on our way to northern Scotland. The owner recommended us cafe bistro and went out to book a table for us. Lucky he did because the place was topped up. Took a bit longer for our table to be ready but it was worth the wait (which we did in the pub across the street). We went for a 3 course meal and the food is of excellent quality. Owner and staff are very friendly. We really enjoyed our meal there. Just keep in mind that the restaurant is not licensed so they do not serve alcohol, but it’s ok to bring your own bottle of wine which we bought in the supermarket across the street. For some this might be a bit odd but we liked it. Will definitely visit again when in the neighborhood.

We looked for a lunch spot while driving down from Inverness and decided to go here based on reviews. They were correct in praising the food - absolutely delicious seafood tagliatelle and baked potatoes. Price level was very reasonable combined to friendly service. Highly recommended!

First visit to The Bistro and won’t be the last. In a group of four, we all chose different mains, good choices and everyone was happy. The food was lovely and nicely presented. Did not feel rushed in any way and sat chatting for three hours. We were even offered complimentary profiteroles at the end of our meal

This place is quite a find right in the centre of Kingussie. It serves up a gourmet menu which is much more than just pub grub. It's not very big though, so booking would be required, especially in the evening. I was there for a private function where we took up the whole restaurant. There was champagne served as we came in, then a three course meal followed by a cheeseboard. I started with soup, then had a main of duck which was very tasty and nicely presented. There were also options of salmon with prawns and vegetarian haggis lasagne. I had chocolate ganache for dessert and couldn't manage anything on the cheeseboard, but it looked good. The staff were quietly efficient and it all ran like clockwork. An excellent meal.

Had an excellent venison burger, and my family gave high marks to pasta and sandwiches. Friendly efficient service. Highly recommend it!

Did not expect to find such tasty food in a small village. Our party had duck, salmon, cod — each one cooked perfectly, with nice sauces. Pavlova was really good! Just one seating a night, so be sure to make reservations ahead of time. Chef Andrew likes to talk with diners at the end of the evening. Take your Scottish accent interpreter with you!

From the outside it just looks like an ordinary cafe/bistro but the food is definitely not ordinary. The food is Exceptional, the guinea fowl in a pink gin sauce was to die for. The steak was also extremely good. The service was very good too. Would definitely recommend just sorry we live 200 miles away.

Andrew - chef/owner - is amazing. How he can serve up the quality menu from his tiny kitchen with his small team is one of life's mysteries. dinner is only served on Friday and Saturday evening but he is open every weekday during the day. Take your own alcohol (Coop across the road sells chilled wine!). Booking for the evenings is essential and so well worth it.

This was an unexpected find..a small bistro in the highlands food was amazing..the venison with Dalwhinnie sauce was to die for..chef made a point of coming to speak to every table. Very reasonable in terms of cost. Only downside it's not licensed however the co-OP across the road has a good selection of wine and you just take whatever you want to drink with you.

Stopped here on the way back from the Highland a Wildlife Park. Nice selection on the lunch menu. The soup of the day was curried parsnip and was delicious. Haggis nachos were an interesting twist on nachos but were very nice. Menu has a great selection and something for everyone, would recommend if you want a quick lunch.

We've eaten here on a number of occasions and it's always excellent. Limited menu of extremely well executed dishes. Scallops, Guinea fowl and cheese all spot on and vegetables sublimely cooked. BYOB keeps the bill reasonable. Worth going out of your way to have dinner here, but it's only served on Fridays and Saturdays. All other days it's open during the day.

One year on & our families were back for our traditional Scotland Winter week away.

We were just looking for a quick lunch and found the bistro. Food was excellent, all local produce and very good value for money. Portions were huge and all our meals very tasty. I would highly recommend The Bistro to anyone who likes good food.

I had just come in from a rainny walk to Glebe Pond before booking into my accommodation, and though the chef was surprised at my Christmas jersey, he asked me to sit near the Fire, which warmed me up, as did a generous big bowl of Minestrone Soup, followed by a Baked Potato with Chilli Con Carne and a cappacino, i had previously known this establishment as Gillies Kitchen, though she has now given up as she found it too taxing, though i would still recommend it as it is light and air as well as warm, and the staff are always eager to please.

Came here with my parents looking for a late breakfast before heading to the Wildlife park. Got there 11.45, breakfast served till midday. Delighted! Quickly ordered 3 full breakfasts (sorry Chef - If you'd started cleaning up already - it was very much appreciated) I had scrambled eggs, parents had fried. It's nice to have the option, both cooked beautifully. Tomato and mushrooms cooked to perfection, I hate getting a soggy tomato or watery mushrooms! Black pudding was so good too... And the streaky bacon...*drools * Where do you get ingredients from? We raved about breakfast for the rest of the day. Everything was just right, even the portion size. Just the right amount!

Part of the McInnis hotel which has just introduced a Sunday carvery service,since moving to the area we have sort a good carvery to satisfy our Sunday day out,having sampled the opening of the carvery service which was just perfect my grandsons put pressure on us to go back for another dinner which we did.A real good relaxed excellent meal with plenty of choice ,the boys are now asking when next.

Had a lovely meal here, delicious venison and sea bass, very attentive waiting staff. The chef came out to make sure every thing was ok. The homemade Dalwhinnie ice cream was unlike any I had tasted before, beautiful!

Having moved into Kingussie several months ago we had been meaning to eat at Cafe Bistro for a while. Having finally got around to it we are very glad we did - it is a little gem. Between the 4 of us we sampled a wide selection of the menu and all was excellent. The menu changes monthly and Andrew the chef was very friendly, being keen to ensure that all had been as expected. It was. Being able to take ones own wine without a corkage charge is also very pleasing. Must also mention the staff, whom were busy but excellent too. We have booked again for this weekend.

We eat out at Café Bistro on a regular basis and always find the menu to be varied and every dish is amazing. Andrew the chef has a passion for his cooking and always finds time to speak to his customers no matter how busy he is. The menu changes every month and there is always plenty choice.Our favourite mains are the venison and the duck which are exquisite.The atmosphere is relaxed and the service is friendly and professional. Everyone works hard to provide an amazing dining out experience which is always consistently excellent. Thank you.

This is a nicely decorated airy restaurant serving a varied menu of very good dishes.

Lovely service, chef took the time to come and meet his clients. The table is yours all night so there is no need to rush. It's BYOB but there is no corkage charge! Food was delicious, I've been a few times and particularly like the venison.

On a recent cycling trip up in Aviemore, my cycling buddy and I passed through Kingussie. It was a beautiful day and we were out for a leisurely ride so coffee and cake was top on our list of priorities. We spotted the tables outdoors in the sun to Bistro Café and decided to stop.

not too bad. It could be recommended when looking for simple food. Nothing to writte home about. Not impressed. I suppose this coffee shop is good enough for what Kingussie is nowadays.

Visited Café Bistro for dinner and we are very glad that we did! Amazing food, beautifully presented and deliciously tasty. Great service especially as we were a very large party. Excellent hospitality - we will definitely return when we are next in the area.

We came across this place because we were attending a golden wedding. It's not very large and we had a slightly different menu than normal but it still contained several starters main courses etc. For once the portion sizes were not too large meaning it was possible to have three courses and leave without feeling bloated. It doesn't serve alcohol but you are allowed to take in your own alcoholic drinks (so a good opportunity to save money).

This is a wee gem in Kingussie. We walked in and were transported into a classy, understated restaurant. The food was amazing, the service was on point and the ice cream was the best I've had in a while. What I love about this place is the Highland touch of bringing your own bottle which adds to a relaxed and homely atmosphere. A great balance between a five star experience whilst avoiding being pretentious. Can't wait to bring my friends here.

We stopped here after being at the Highland Folk Museum. There was a couple of other cafes on the high street but I think we made the right choice going here. Lots of choice, well cooked and friendly staff. The main thing that stood out was the exceptional value. We paid less for a nicely cooked burger here than we did for a poorly prepared toastie in Aviemore. Would definitely recommend and look forward to finding an excuse to go back.

I booked this for a Friday night for a group of 10 of us ( 3 families with grown up children). Although its only open a couple of evenings a week, the ambiance & decor is really good for an evening meal out, so don't be put off by the 'cafe' in the name. There is a choice of about 5 things for each course & all of us were very impressed with the quality of each. Service from all & the quality of the food was really top notch..

This was my first visit, and it certainly won't be my last. Excellently cooked good food, and fantastic service, even although we were a party of 10 running a little late, and another large party came in shortly afterwards, the service was streets ahead of most. Well done Nicky and Andy
