Caernarvon Castle in Wirral

Refused entry for lunch with my 31 year old daughter and her 3 month old baby because he was under 18. Are you having a laugh. PATHETIC. Well done- NOT

I like the NARV but it is a geriatrics pub. The menu is too restrictive. A Greene King pub, the King's Arms in Higher Bebington has a much wider menu. Why? If a 75 year old man feels this way, what does a young person think. No omolletes, no baked beans, no toast! Unbelievable.

Fantastic food, and reasonable prices. What more can you ask for?

We came here on Friday for a meal and a few drinks. Food and atmosphere were fab but what stood out us all the most was the service. Jodie went above and beyond. She was so friendly and couldn't have done more to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. We will definitely be back. We couldn't recommend enough

Appalling service, no staff on when it's full, it's absolutely ridiculous. Poor staff must be a quick turnaround on staff leaving.

Asked for a table to dine was told full next member of staff asked us if we needed any help said we were looking for a table to eat and was given a table straight away!!!! Why couldn’t the first member of staff been as pleasant instead of telling us to sit In the bar area and order food there when we wanted to sit down in the restaurant part of the pub. The young girl who took food order was so pleasant but the older lady with short grey hair obviously doesn’t want to be there and was so unhelpful. Caernavon manager do yourself a favour have a word with your staff cost nothing to be pleasant and helpful !!! You will be loosing customers with this attitude!

Not a good experience, service very slow , gluten free beef was chewy with a tasteless gravy , then forgot our deserts , not even an apology

We came here on Friday night and had scampi and chips and a fish and chips. The food came fast and was hot despite it being busy. The food was amazing and couldn't have asked for better service! Will definitely be coming back.

Will not be going again . Staff behind bar were arguing between themselves. Over an hours wait for food , tables were filthy ( not just the one we sat at ) . Tables outside were all full of empty glasses , broken glass on floor under the table alongside overflowing ashtrays . Would not recommend.

Not a review about the food or staff, more of a review about their website and their communication. We hadn't been to the Caernarvon Castle before and thought it looked like a nice family pub so would give it a go an get out of the house. We booked online and we wrote notes regarding bringing a young baby and may need to breast feed, just to give them a heads up and see if their was a possibility for a quieter seat but we know places get busy so didn't mind to much. We arrived at our booking time to be told on arrival that they don't have a licence for inside so we couldn't bring the baby in and if we wanted to eat we would have to sit outside! I can understand being strict about kids running round inside but never thought Ide hear of a young baby being turned away and told to sit outside. I understand licensing can being tricky things but our main issue was the fact we had stated on our booking and no one thought to contact us in the hours between us booking it and our arrival. We would have appreciated a heads up before bringing a baby out only to have to go elsewhere last minute. Since, I have checked their website again and I have now seen that it says not kid friendly but only on their FAQs which is a bit silly. You can book for a kid between 0-15 but you cant actually take them. Needs a notice first thing on the website and by looking at other reviews needs one on the doors.

Unable to go in with a new born baby to go and get food, told due to licensing they can not have children, however I know landlords and have spoken to them, it’s not about the licence as the licence covers them to sell alcohol and operate. Down to small time mentality they implement this policy, however dogs are allowed in which baffles me as some dogs are very unhygienic and can trigger other guests allergies. Will update this review in 18 years time when I can revisit.

When I rate one star only because they don’t have minus star rating absolute joke of a place no under 18 unless your sitting outside what about if your eating ? Rating very poor have money to burn only 3 other people and we where a party of 4

A group of friends and I visited here on Friday. We always come here as its a great pub with a lovely atmosphere and fab staff. It was karaoke on Friday and everyone was having a great time. Thanks to all involved for yet another great night. See you soon. I'd definitely recommend

Me, my extended family and friends have been going to the Caernarfon for years, We have seen many different managers come and go, but the latest lot are rude and unpleasant. I went in for a couple of pints last night. As me and my friend entered we were passed by a couple we knew who were leaving and said good luck. We walked in to be met with super loud karaoke. We bought some pints (Timothy Taylor Landlord was good). We found some seats at the furthest point away from the music as standing in any of the other main areas of the pub meant you couldn’t talk. There were loads of seats but everyone bar one family table was forced away from karaoke. At about 10 o’clock we watched as a group of 9 older regulars and another group of 4 were made to move to the main area as they were laying the tables for the next day. They reasonably pointed out the noise issues only to be met with super aggressive management. It was really unpleasant to watch. We in turn moved to an area with seats. We couldn’t talk because it was super loud. We then witnessed the manager and her friend who were standing at the bar aggressively eyeballing the older men (65-80) whilst they tried to enjoy their local pub. The behaviour of the manager, her friend and her team was aggressive, unpleasant and unnecessary! You can’t treat locals like this. The pub has its regulars and if you ostracise them word spreads fast. I won’t be going back for a while.

The Caernarfon Castle in Oxton has been my local since August Bank Holiday 2023. From the outset I found the regulars friendly and jovial company and I made new friends; you can't have too many! I dine here every lunchtime. The tomato and basil soup is delicious. There's a Senior menu Monday thru' Wednesday, (I wish it were 'til Friday like other Greene King pubs on Wirral.) The atmosphere is convivial. I dine at table 35, esconsed in a huge armchair, the epitome of luxurious comfort, master of all I survey. The staff are friendly and courteous (especially Gale who warrants 10 out of 10). After lunch it's time for a pint or two of real ale and there's always a wide choice. My tipple is either Greene King Abbott or Theakston's Old Peculiar. After which it's time to wen my way home, happy and contented having enjoyed good company, the Creaché, and banter with the staff, especially Steve who is always pulling my leg. This pub warrants 5 stars. Long may it last. Chris Lord

For a Tuesday early evening it was a little quiet..Our meal of fish and chips and a gammon and chips was excellent..The staff were very pleasant and helpful...will definitely be visiting again soon.😊

We use to be weekly visitors here prior to having our daughter. We visited yesterday after not being for some time, for a few drinks in the outdoor area in the sun. We were horrified to find how much the drink prices have increased, £15.15 for a double gin with diet lemonade, which didn't have fruit in and a pint of Morretti, which was served in a Stella glass! There was also long waits at the bar. We won't be returning again for drinks.

Great pub, location, food but the bar service is so slow recently, regardless of how busy it is. Some training would solve a lot. I’m sure a lot of people avoid for fear of standing at the bar for 20 minutes to get a couple of drinks.

Appalling experience from start to finish. Waited over 10 minutes to be seated. Indeed the general manager sitting opposite us whilst we stood waiting for a server to show us to our seat (the restaurant area was half full at best) showed complete disregard for the length of time we had stood waiting or encouraging any member of his staff to direct us to our table. Matters then became worse quickly. Every table had a 'specials plaque' on and we had come for one of these but where then told that there were no specials on on the Sunday and the kitchen was only "equipped" for the Sunday menu alone. Why have the specials menus on every single table then? Our server then proceeded to take our drinks order and said she had to clean her glasses because they were "minging with food on them". Great eh? I mean are these people even trained at all - it's just appalling. Subsequently we tried to order no less than 5 different main course meals each - only to be told that on each occasion - yes the server had to go and come back from the kitchen on 5 separate times, to be told that each of the dishes we wanted was sold out or not available that day. Separately, the wine glasses provided to us were filthy - see picture. Check your glasses here before you drink - they are simply not cleaned thoroughly enough, by any standard. Oh and the toilets were disgusting too. We ended up having but not really wanting, burgers. Due to all the hassle and delay - we waited an hour for the burgers - I advised I was not paying for the wine. This was noted by the server but again an issue was raised when I went to pay the bill and the male server in shorts was aggressive, loud voiced and rude with me - this place has little to no customer service and that all flows down from the lack of proper management at the top. Avoid this venue for food:- the management is poor, some rude staff, there is little to no emphasis on you being valued as a customer, sub standard hygiene and there are, simply put, far better places elsewhere locally on the Wirral you should spend your money.

Had food hear Friday gone around 4.45 waited a while for our food it was warm when it arrived just not enough staff it felt like being just left in the corner of the room .service was not that good for people spending over 70.oo for food we won't be returning 😩

Always enjoy our meals here. Decent pub grub menu. Staff are friendly and provide good service. They’re unable to add a tip on to the bill however, so always have to try to remember to take some cash with us!

Six of us went to this establishment on a Sunday evening for one drink. It was busy but there were a few tables available. Having bought drinks and having seated ourselves, a waitress came over and ordered us to move. She told us that area in which we were seated was for those people eating only. In order to keep our space we asked for some light meals but she then said that the kitchen was closed. We said we'd only stay for about 20 minutes but we were told that we had to move, 'because that is what my manager says'. Needless to say, the manager was not available. When we left, 30 minutes later, the place was still empty and the two people sitting at another table in the same area were still there - since the manager's rules probably did not apply to them. This is the most unwelcoming pub in the area, it is noisy, uncouth and understaffed. I've known the place for decades and it was once a beautiful, refined place. Since lockdown, it has declined into a rough boozer and is a place to avoid.

Six of us arrived and bought drinks. We sat at a table where no restrictions were made plain. Within minutes, a member of staff came across to ask if we had booked. Bearing in mind there was no-one else around, we said we’d not. So she told us to move, ‘because the area was closed as it was only open to diners’. We ordered three plates of chips and were told as a result of not booking, the kitchen was closed. We asked why this was the case and were told it was the decision of the manager. As a result, the manager lost a round of three drinks, several repeat orders, several orders of snacks and an utter loss of goodwill. They evidently do not value patrons as they cannot be bothered to clear tables to let others sit there. We will not go back. It is a shocking venue. Avoid.

Very disappointing to say the least. Regulars for many years, but menu appeared much reduced in choice and even then the most basic ingredient wasn’t available for our choice of the lunch deal. Ended up just getting chips when they came were meagre and probably worked out approximately 50pence per chip or more! Focaccia was like a ball of dough. And no, we didn’t complain as not sure anyone was interested tbh. Greene king are a big chain and really need to have a look at themselves for value for money these days. Sad as we have always been happy previously, but there are lots more better value for money options out there

Very popular venue inside and out in the summer. Can get noisy, particularly at weekends. Car park and street parking. Disabled access. Good food, well presented and priced. Nice friendly atmosphere. Good choice of drinks at the bar.

Thanks to Linda the manager my wife and myself were able to visit this pub twice now and we have had a fabulous experience every time. Food excellent and brilliant atmosphere. Staff very accommodating. Will definitely be returning. Les and Carole.

I brought my mum for her birthday lunch and I was blown away the staff had catered for my mum who has dementia made sure our table was close to the toilets even decorated her table with happy birthday placemats it was a lovely touch.the food was lovely and lots of choice the staff were amazing went above and beyond to make my mum's day extra special i cant thank them enough will most definitely be back.thank you so much to everyone who was working today it meant so much to me and my family!

We recently Dined here,having done so on many occasions,but reluctantly feel the need to comment on the dishes we were served. I opted.for the fish and chips, whilst my wife selected the scampi.Having sampled both dishes previously,we opted for the same again,when the dishes were presented to us,we quickly realised they were dry and tasteless, the fish was mainly comprised of batter,The chips along with everything else were overcooked,we're on previous visits the meals were tasty and flavoursome. We went elsewhere to Dine,still feeling hungry, and hope for a better experience if we decide to eat here in the future

Booked a table for 6, 3 children, 2 adults in 12th March. I saw no children, but as it asked for number of children thought this meant the evening. Today 27th March I received a phone call telkingjechildren aren't allowed at all. I am now left too late to book anywhere else. Sorry I mustn't of explained myself thoroughly enough for you! The booking form asked for the number of children attending the meal. This lead me to believe that as we had booked lunch, it maybe the evening which didn't allow children. surely this has been a problem before as the girl who informed me asked if I'd booked online. Obviously I wouldn't have booked Easter Sunday for my family if it had been clear ( or prominent). I've been before and your food is lovely, they didn't have stars for you could of informed me sooner. Thank you for your understanding reply. If you'd of informed me my booking hadn't been accepted, as quickly as you responded to this review, there wouldn't have been an issue.

Normally enjoy this pub when we do come in but someone needs to speak to the individual who does the quiz and remind him his job is in hospitality. In last night for a few drinks before my friends mums funeral today. Sat in the quiz area unaware that it was quiz night chatting and yes we got loud but that was due to the fact that the idiot started doing his quiz and was very loud. Had he just said quietly to us he was setting up for a quiz we would have moved before he started. Instead he chose to announce over the microphone that maybe the table in front of him would like to move. Not politely asking but more to humiliate us causing everyone to glare over, felt like a naughty child being told off. Any need to try to embarrish people to make you feel good about yourself, very poor. If that's what he calls entertainment, he's in the wrong job. For the record we had been sitting in that spot before he had turned up. Not once did he say he was setting up a quiz, as we would have moved. Rude pathetic little man. Made to feel totally unwelcome by him and question his hospitality skills. And to say I got in his face, I was trying to explain later to him only to be told he didn't care that my friends mum had passed away. Charming pathetic little man.

Great place food is lovely . Beer is cheap. Came for a cheap lunch , ended up staying later . Love Steve the bar man had a great laugh.

Excellent table service and delicious food! My daughter and I had lunch from the lunch deal menu, it was piping hot, plentiful, and tasty to boot! Plenty of choice for vegans too. We will definitely be visiting again. Thank you to all, and especially our server, who was lovely.

Been here a few times recently for Sunday lunch with family and we absolutely love it. Food is amazing quality and reasonably priced, the pies are phenomenal. The staff are welcoming, attentive and friendly, shoutout to Sam who is just amazing. The hostess is amazing as well!

First time ever been there. Staff seemed friendly at first. We had to seek someone to take order, waited over an hour for meal and ended up not eating it. Landlord and lady didn't come across as friendly to strangers. Appears regulars paid more service to than strangers. If your going for first time not a good experience and don't go hungry. Would not recommend unless a regular.

Came in yesterday for some lunch..........food and service was great. We were served by a lovely lady, and the young man behind the bar and even when things got a bit busier they were still on the ball. Great value for money too - lovely starters and mains and we had a lovely few hours - thanks folks we'll definitely see you again

We’ve been to the Caernarvon twice during February, both times on a Sunday. One was for an 80th celebration with 12 of us and yesterday Sunday lunch for 3 of us. The pub is lovely, clean and comfortable and the staff friendly and helpful (especially Sam yesterday, who was very helpful - thank you). On both occasions the food was lovely. All in all the service on both occasions was really good and being honest, we did have a small hick up with one of the orders (when there were 12 of us) but this was quickly corrected. We will definitely go again.

Hebe been here many times. Today as always the service was impeccable , staff went above and beyond expectation. I had booked a table, were shown to our seats, came to take drinks order, then took order for food, we ordered desserts at the same time. The fish was extremely tasty, the senior roast was a nice size portion as I was having Eton Mess as a dessert. Nothing was too much trouble.

Didn't try the food so can't comment on that but did sample the real ales and they always have a few on tap. Well looked after and clearly pride themselves on the selection. Local breweries are represented as well as some national ones. Service has always been decent in terms of waiting times - seem to have enough staff on when I've been in. Nice lay out in terms of tables and seating. Outdoor seating area is large and pleasant. A really good, well-run pub in my experience.

I have been twice over last 2 weeks with friends 11 people on 1 occasion and 7 people last night on first visit there was 9 main meals not available and we had a hour wait for food so thought this mite be a one off but went last night with 7 friends and again a lot of mains not available and had to change are orders in 3 occasions and again an hour wait for food we was not happy

Went in for a evening meal enjoyed the service and the meal we will return 😉😁

18 of us went here yesterday at short notice for my dads birthday. The staff couldn’t have been more helpful or friendly. Nothing was too much trouble for them and they made a real fuss of my dad. The atmosphere was laid back and friendly with everyone made to feel very welcome. The food was excellent, lots of choice and all well presented. The price was very reasonable too. We will definitely be back, thanks everyone xx

Myself and my wife had Christmas Dinner there yesterday all I can say is it was the saddest looking Dinner we have ever seen. And to top it off was over charged for a pint I ordered at the table and after 30 minutes never received it.as they say your eyes eat first should have kept them closed just glad it wasn't Christmas day. Hi Thanks for getting back in answer to your point why we did not tell the server we made it clear that the food was poor. The server said thanks for the feedback and will let the kitchen know and made a joke about getting someone the sack.

My dog drags me there, every Friday. She knows the way. Whether I like it or not.

So disappointing. Booked a table for 2pm for 3 people. Was seated and received drinks while waiting for starter. We had to remind them 55 minutes later that we were still waiting. An apology came with our starters. When we eventually got our main meal, turkey dinner, it was quite pitiful. One small carrot, one small slice of parsnip, 3 hard roast potato halves, one rubbery yorkie and half a dozen hard sprouts. I don’t mind an al-dente sprout but wow these were hard. The saving grace was the turkey, oh and the gravy was nice. What the three of us left filled a whole plate. Dessert was nice. Informed a member of staff about the meal. UPDATE: Was contacted by a member of the management within a couple of hours of posting this review and have accepted an apology and a meal on the house at a time of our choice. Couldn’t ask for more really.

Today we went to the Caernaron for a meet up and a chat with friend we have known for over 40 years there was 12 of us one of the guys brought his son who was under 18 and he was not allowed to stay. Very strange as it served food and it has a sign saying dogs welcome. Dogs and not children!!!!! We will not be going there again 🤬

Great tasty food, staff as always brilliant, welcoming and polite, plus a good atmosphere. We had the gammon and lamb dishes.

Went to the Caernarvon Castle for lunch today with my friend. Booked ahead for 12 o'clock luckily because by 12:30 it was packed. Even so we received 5 star service, especially from Paula (I think the manager). Food was lovely as was the price. Thoroughly recommended. Always enjoy going here. 💕

I was in this pub this evening, ordered food found it good PUB food, the person sitting at table 17 a couple, ordered their food, ate it then refused to pay the bill, I could only hear bits of the discussion with one of the staff, but sounds like they didn’t think the food was worth the money, seems he wanted more than he got !! Ate it all though !! To that person if what I heard is correct, why didn’t you complain when your meal came? You knew the cost of the meal from the menu, I was going to say something to you at the time but didn’t want to make the situation any worse, I thought the guy who worked there handled it better than I would. To the couple on that table around 8 ish you know who you are, you were out of order and should have paid your BILL!! It’s a pub you cheap skate if you wanted better food go to a restaurant not a bloody pub. I have been there sevral times, the staff are always courteous, friendly and attentive, atmosphere is always buzzing and a happy vibe. So only go to this pub if you want pub food and friendly welcome !! Added on 14/11/2023 I have never done a review ever for anything, and my friend pointed out to me that I had only rated 2, my apologies for this, I was so annoyed when writing I hadn’t pressed all the stars. I love this pub, the staff are just brilliant…i wanted to thank you all for the love and support you have shown to my Dad, he is a regular at your pub, he now has quite bad dementia and isn’t in good health. He has been going to The Caernarvon for over 10 years. Linda and her staff have been so very kind to him, making sure he is safe at all times, going over and beyond really, to take care of him. Taking my number and ringing me if they are worried and promising to keep an eye on him. A massive thank you. From all my family. X food is lovely and there is always such a welcome here.

We were quite disappointed with our visit. We waited 25 minutes for 4 drinks. One of the drinks we ordered they did not have (nor had they ever had apparently) even though it was listed on the app and we had already paid for it. This was fine but it took them a long time to come and tell us. When the drinks finally arrived, one glass of wine was served room temperature (it was a rosé that should be chilled). I was too afraid to ask for a replacement for fear of another 25 minute wait! Needless to say we did not stay for another round.

Offers value for money and menu is sufficient. If you live local I can see why you would walk here in the evening but if your driving then you have many other options to choose from.

Lovely friendly waitress from Mexico, but unfortunately, not lovely food! A few of us in our party had the fish and chips which was so tasteless and the batter was not fresh. The lamb, gammon and risotto were ok I believe but nothing special. We had a table booked for 7 p.m. and it took ages to serve our meals and on top of that they were out of at least 5 or 6 things on the menu which was surprising given we had booked an early slot! This used to be such a good place to go for food but we have been there a few times now and the food is a disappointing let down. Its such a shame as its a lovely pub and very local to us but sadly will be giving this a miss for food from now on!

Unfortunately, after a lovely welcome,I was treated to some special treatment by one of the staff members. A mature lady,obviously flustered,was rude and extremely derogatory to me while serving at the bar.later,when I had an issue with some ketchup,she made it quite clear she thought I had deliberately smeared sauce on myself,my friend and the surrounding area!!thankfully there was another, calmer,professional member of staff who at least apologised and resolved the issue. I never bother with these kind of things , but when someone goes out of their way to be rude to me,for no good reason,I think it's worth a mention.the staff,in general,were lovely,but our experience has been tarnished by someone who failed me as a customer ,and the rest of the team,who work hard to make every customer enjoy their experience at the place of work.

Could book but told to popo in, table straight away, excellent and fast service. Beautiful food and a great atmopshere. Thank you
