Butch Annies in Cambridge

I've never had a bad experience at Butch Annie's. I think of their burgers as an example when I buy a burger from a pub or restaurant as they make the best burgers I've tried so far, the only downside I could think of would be the room so if your looking to go there in the evening its wise to book as they get very busy.

I ordered the Italian chicken burger, the sauce was the highlight. Nice chips with rosemary flavour. Lovely atmosphere and music.

Terrible service made us overpay and “removed the service charge” as an apology for 30 minute late fries that they originally served knowing of allergies??? Then the waitress lied to us and said that we said stuff we simply didnt. We didn’t even get the fries, she had to go back about 5 times to check allergens, waited ages to get our order taken in the first place and had to go up several times to ask for mayo/the bill. The service charge wasn’t going to be paid. Of course we weren’t going till pay for the fries which never arrived and when they bought us the WRONG fries, we shouldn’t have had to pay for those fries. Plus she then argued with me when i told her that was ridiculous. Worst service ever. Burger was dry, fries were apparently meh. Not that i would know, because mine never arrived. Awful, overrated, gone downhill as ANYTHING

Moderate Potion The portion is bigger than Byron Burger. The bun tasted very good. The sauce tasted special and unique too. Too bad the food(burger, steak, onion rings and chips) is only slightly warmer than Honest Burgers. Only as warm as Byron Burger. Therefore do not feel warm after eating the whole meal, but at least feel fuller than eating at Byron Burger. The restaurant is located underground, therefore easily overlooked by the pedestrians. The environment looks clean, nice and rustic. The tables are not too close to each other. I think everything will be better if the food is hotter......

The Saucy Rump Burger was one of the nicest burgers I've ever had (and I am a burger aficionado). Only improvement would have been another slice of cheese. My partner had The Jack and it was really nice but not quite as tasty so we shared. (Had it been the other way around she would only have let me have one bite;-) Place was quite for a Friday lunchtime (maybe because other burger places get better reviews?). This combined with too-loud 10 songs on repeat shuffle was my reason for 4 stars for atmosphere.

Food was ok, the steak was small. Toilets were filthy. And the place was boiling. The air con obviously doesn’t work… Not the worst food I’ve had but there’s much better in Cambridge. Went on a Friday night and it was really quiet that kinda says it all really when everywhere else was busy. Also to get a 10% service charge added on (I always tip anyway) was a bit of a joke as there was only 2 of us. Also if we didn’t have that added on I’d have tipped more as the waitress was really nice. Won’t go back

Good food portions, friendly staff, tasty burgers and fries.

Back home, basement restaurants are not common. Glad I dropped in. Perfectly cooked burger. Got The One.

I have been travelling around the world looking for the best burger in the world. Over 200 burger places. This is the best one and therefore worthy of a review. The burger is so juicy (not watery). The service was so attentive. 10/10

One of the best burgers I’ve ever had! The Truffle Hunter was delicious, great fries, and an amazing thick milkshake. Wonderful service, and highly efficient in without-hesitation swapping out my lactose-intolerant husband’s burger bun and cheese for vegan alternatives. Highly recommend and will definitely be going back; thank you!

A door at street level leads down to Butch Annie’s, an amazing burger place. My burger was well cooked and the fries well seasoned. The Oreo shake was good too. It’s not the big place, luckily we did have an issue finding a seat. Somewhere I’d recommend!

First thing, 7.45pm, when we walked in we thought the restaurant was closed as no other customers than us were in. To be honest everytime I went there the restaurant's empty, maybe the busiest I saw with one table or two, despite so the toilets were very filthy. There was water splashes everywhere in front of the sinks and pee on the floor of each cubicles I walk with crutches so I had to be careful not to slip, as they don't have a disabled toilet. As for the food: Not enough condiments in the burger, I asked for extra bacon and only ONE bacon strip was added to my burger for the price of £1.30 or £1.50. The burger itself was not terrible but it was a huge chunk of not juicy or tender or tasty meat. I could definitely make a better one myself at home... The fries overpriced, considering the size of the portion. I had dine in here about 2-3 times, and frankly, every time I left I felt unsatisfied and I could've spent my money elsewhere. The filthy toilet this time was too much... The service was alright but I won't come back, sorry.

Best burger I've had in a long time! We both had "The One", with a side of fries and onion rings. Generous portions, you won't be disappointed. Our waitress, Liza, was great - service with a very friendly smile!

The server we had was lovely, she let us have plenty of time to decide what we wanted from the menu and was very accommodating. So no fault there. The atmosphere was okay but wasn't busy at all. It was little bit dead. Maybe that might be because it is a weekday. Me and my partner had steak, it was quite flavourless lacked any taste at all if I'm 100% honest. We ate the whole steak as we were hungry and it wasn't awful. The fries were average and so were the onion rings. I did expect better. My mum and her partner had the burgers and they were nice and had flavour. However overall we decided we wouldn't come back here again if we had a choice to.

Visited here in June and was very disappointed. We were seated and our order was taken in good time. Me and my partner both ordered a coke and this took a while to come to our table, closely followed by our food. Considering the restaurant wasn’t at all busy, the slow service was not necessary. Our burgers looked great, however soon realised it didn’t taste as good as it looked, the bun was soggy and truffle chips were tasteless. I also think £5.50 for 6 pathetic sized onion rings is extortionate. The waitress approached our table whilst I was still eating and began to clear my parters dishes away even though he had just taken his last mouthful. Rude! When the bill was brought over, the waitress explained that a 10% service charge had been added which we declined paying. The waitress further went on to question us to why we were not going to be paying it. I believe this was rude and we should never have been questioned. We will be avoiding this restaurant at all costs.

Lovely little burger place. Definitely recommend on getting "The One" burger, as it is flavoursome and cooked to perfection. Atmosphere feels great, good music playing in the background and the restaurant has a nice décor to it. The young lady that served us on the day was class, making sure that we are having a good time, and the food was brought to us very fast.

Amazing steak, perfect rare and excellent seasoning. The peppercorn sauce is gorgeous and the truffle fries are always a good bet! Burgers are great too!

Firstly, I don't really like burgers and so was hesitant but had been recommended by a friend. We'd walked by the entrance so many times and not noticed it. Down the flight of stairs is a really cool, open, welcoming restaurant. The burgers were next level, such imaginative combinations and totally delicious, plus cook medium, which was great. The service was superb, the waitress was friendly, informative, so diligent with my allergies and even spoke to her bosses to let us take a momento from the evening. The local produce and beers/ciders make this place somewhere we will return to over and over!

One of the best burgers in Cambridge for a more than reasonable price! It sounds silly but letting you know the burger are cooked medium-rare is not as frequent as it should be. The waitresses were nice and friendly and the atmosphere was quite nice. Bear in mind if you are claustrophobic, as it might not be for you (underground local).

Great burgers and fries for an unbeatable price. The service is brilliant as well. The One Burger is one of the best I've ever had and I've just got back from New York and sampled some of the best there.

Worst burger place in Cambridge 🤮

We both opted for 'The One' signature steak burgers, with skin-on chips. I chose the JD sticky bourbon sauce and my partner the garlic mayo. Waitress service was attentive, but it wasn't busy when we arrived. She informed us that the signature burgers are a little pink inside and gave us the option of having them cooked longer. We both stuck with the pink, but if I went again I would have it cooked longer as it was very tasty but also very wet. The single use tiny napkins couldn't catch the juices running down my hands! No cutlery was offered and the burgers arrived on wooden boards, which looked perfectly clean, but obviously well used, quite rough and not regularly oiled. We debated how hygienic they could have been long-term and decided it was probably best not to think about it! Chips were very skinny, fries not chips. Garlic mayo was very garlicky but the JD sticky bourbon sauce was neither sticky or saucy, but tasted watered down and extremely runny. I had to literally immerse my chips in it to get it to stick. Overall gave it 4 stars for the service and food was ok, plus liked the option of ordering a 1/2 bottle of wine (even though the waitress couldn't say and obviously didn't know what a carafe was). Would return, but order something different next time.

Excellent burgers - best I've had in ages. Fries are also delicious (some might find them a bit salty). The steak tastes amazing but I'm not keen on this slicing before serving trend (not least because I know it makes a small steak look bigger!). Wine is OK - but definitely 'rustic' - I'd probably stick to beer in future (they have a great line up of local brews). Music is seriously good but can be a bit intense if you are near one of the speakers. Otherwise, hightly recommended.

It was with a small door like underground , it never take my attention but than i go see the atmosphere and tried the burger and i love the meat .The size of the burger was enough to fill me up, sauces are very nice , i feel very comfortable and like at home all very friendly i would definitely go there again

Great food, the steak is amazing and the craft cider on tap is also very good. Not particularly expensive considering it's in the centre of Cambridge, and the service is always polite & friendly, just sometimes a little slow if you don't catch the waitresses attention

Most definitely a 'return to' restaurant. Came across Butch Annie's while visiting Cambridge for another shop; it has a street level entrance that leads down to a vaults-style layout with plenty of seating. Service was great, food was even better. Came out quickly, was hot and cooked just as we'd asked. Can highly recommend the Smokey Joe and Italian burgers. Spoilt for choice with fries but we went for the Rosemary Salt and the onion rings were spot on. Only downside to this place...it's the only one of it's kind it seems; worth the 1 hour + journey i would say though.

I've been serval times to Butch Annie's and its always been my favourite... but yesterday I visited (25/02/24) and the burgers were horrid. The menu has changed and I'm so disappointed! Can't see us coming back again!

We visited Butch Annie’s for the first time back in December the Burger was out of the world. This visit, I left feeling very dissatisfied, nauseous and greasy. I ordered the classic burger and my partner the one. My burger came out in around less than 10 mins, the classic burger had the most awful burger sauce, it was spicy, sloppy, cheese tasted like it come out of can. My partners burger came out slopped everywhere, the equivalent of 3 whole chillies in his burger and just a mess, a portion of Cajun fries, which was so spicy and overcooked. This is not the experience we had the first time round but this time we won’t be coming back if this is the changes. I knew the burger straight away was wrong. To get a servers attention was impossible (our server was very lovely but seem to be the only one running around by herself) This was a burger we left thinking back in December was one of the best, now we both regretted eating it and won’t be returning.

Visited twice, food quality's solid and finding a seat's never a problem. The burgers are nice flavored but too salty for me. Fries are spot on with a crispy shell and soft middle. The onion rings were a bit too brown and dry.

Best burger i have ever had. Saw this place while wandering around Cambridge and im glad we went in. Burger was perfect. It was perfectly cooked and great balance of flavours between the briouche bun, the juicy burger and just the hint of peppercorn sauce running through it all. Price was about what you could expect for the city centre but not astronomical.

SOMEWHAT DISAPPOINTING.. BURGER MEAT KIND OF TOUGH, SERVED ON A PIECE OF WOOD (!), NO CUTLERY, ASKED FOR A COFFEE AND WERE TOLD "WE DON'T DO HOT DRINKS" !!! ALL THIS WITH CONSTANT LOUD SCREAMING "MUSIC" ... WON'T BE GOING BACK THERE IN ANY HURRY!

The most amazing vegan burger! And I love the music and the ambience. Cosy, friendly and altogether to be recommended. The chips and onion rings were also good with vegan mayo. And a nice range of local beers, ales and cider or cocktails.

Came here recently for the first time to try the veggie burgers, which we had heard good things about. We had the ooh la la and the truffle hunter. Both were terrific and definitely worth the praise. I would say both were among the best burgers we have had in Cambridge, and significantly better than the boring impossible / moving mountains vegan burgers that seem to be everywhere these days. Restaurant overall had a nice vibe and the server was super friendly. Bravo!

One more time, it is confirmed that the best burgers I had are in the UK! I don’t like the British pies&co, but their burgers are simply amazing! Fresh meat, medium done, perfectly balanced…makes you want more…and then die of belly explosion…without regrets! Congratulations to the cook! The prices are fair!

A nice little burger restaurant in the heart of Cambridge. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, asked all the right questions and were very polite. The food was great too, although the chillies in my burger blew my head off! 🤣 Definitely worth a visit if you are in Cambridge.

We were waited on by Cleo who was so friendly and helpful! I had the Saucy burger and it was one of the best burgers I’ve had in a long time, the flavours were beautiful and the meat was cooked perfectly. My mum had a vegetarian burger and absolutely loved it. Will definitely be back soon!

Melhor cheeseburger que comi em Cambridge! Parece meio esquisito, pois tem que descer uma escada, mas quando se chega lá, o ambiente é bem legal. Parece um pub colorido, com tap beer e tocando rock dos anos 60, 70 e 80. A balconista foi bastante simpática e nos deixou provar 3 cervejas, antes de escolhermos. Vale a pena.

Been coming here for a few years now and it never fails to impress me. Today me and my mother decided to dine here and it was wonderful.The waitresses were lovely and the food was fantastic.

Called in on off chance not very busy seated straight away. Served by a very pleasant waitress. The menu mainly consists of burgers but done to a high standard. Restaurant situated down stairs very difficult if disabled. Situated in the centre of Cambridge.

Those were the best burgers I had in a while! The meat is so valuable, and all the other ingredient were perfect too, bun included. If you like burgers, this place is the best choice you could make.

As someone who enjoys burgers, I find myself ordering them frequently and often being rather underwhelmed. Butch Annie’s was a different story. Really flavoursome burger of decent size, with good variety on the menu. My only criticism was the Cajun fries were nothing special, but the burger was one of the best I’ve had for a while: Will be returning.

Very interesting decor. The service was good, attentive, and lovely. The food was average. We had steak, mine was okay, and my partners steak was chewy. No distinctive or melt in your mouth taste. Portion was small. Table was wobbly, and so was the backing of my seat. Didn't feel like our kind of place. Unlikely to come back.

The food is delicious, but the choice is limited and I was served a beef burger after ordering a vegetarian burger. Although it was disgusting to accidentally take a bite (I have not eaten meat for 30 years), if I had been allergic, that could have been really dangerous. Such mistakes simply should not happen. Our chips were forgotten too. The restaurant was known for their fantastic pizzas but they no longer make them, and you can’t even buy a tea or coffee! I won’t go back, as it was so disappointing, but if you don’t mind a very limited choice, the food (once it’s right) is very tasty.

Don’t know about the food as we left during ordering. The waitress was very rude… if you want more customers, propose to select people with better attitude.

Walked in and seated straight away, not the best seat in the house (next to the toilet). The steak was cooked to how they said it would be. The sauce was cold, and when I questioned it, I was told that's how it is. Found it hard to get used to. Rosemary chips are delicious. I do think the sauce and chips should be included in the £16 for the steak. Not enough to fill you up but a decent size meal. They don't sell pints. Signal is ifffy being in the basement.

Used to be great, now very average. Burgers today took a long time to arrive despite the place not being super busy. Was warned it would be cooked pink but my one arrived cooked all the way through and was quite dry. Also, no kids options at all which is disappointing. When it opened this was our go to burger place, but based on our last two visits it’s now bang average.

By far best burger in Cambridge. Meat is so perfectly done! Juicy and full of flavor. Chips are on point. Atmosphere is so cozy. Staff are very friendly, Ellie was amazing. All in all five star experience would definitely come again.

It would be easy to miss Butch Annies as it is down a flight of stairs off the street but to miss it would be a big mistake. Excellent steak, fabulous service and a relaxed atmosphere. Oh, and the prices are good too. Wish we had found it earlier.

The food was OK - burger had a big lump of gristle in it and steak wasn't bad, but not the best I've had. Onion rings and chips were lovely. We ordered 2 Long Island Iced Tea cocktails and they were weak as anything...might aswell have ordered a plain coke and at just under £10 a go, that is unacceptable. Worst of all, We could smell a strong smell of cigarette smoke....this happened thorughout our meal and I called one of the staff over and told her about the cigarette smoke and it was unacceptable to smell this whilst eating...she wasn't bothered at all and dismissed it. I told her a second time about the cigarette smoke smell when paying, it was dismissed again so I felt I had no option but to remove the tip they added to our bill. This doesn't sit well with me as I ALWAYS tip, but being dismissed twice over something so distasteful whilst eating a meal - I won't have that at all.

Excellent burgers! Possibly the best we've ever had. The chips were amazing too (I would particularly recommend the rosemary salted ones). One of our party was vegetarian, and a bit worried about how the the veggie burger would be, but she was delighted with it.

I had a Handmade Burger oh la lah and fresh rosemary & salt fries delicious! Enjoyed the lovely Mint Mocktail, great Alcohol menu which I will try another time. The staff are super friendly and helpful Leah, Cleo and another young lady. I have perviously been to butch and I am never disappointed and I was serve by the manager Natalia who is very welcoming and friendly. Looking forward to trying their steak next time.

Butch Annie’s - “what’s not to love!” they've truly revolutionised the steak dining experience by introducing an exhilarating game of chance. Will your steak be tenderly kissed by the flames or will it merely get a fleeting glance from a heat lamp from across the room? Or maybe both… you may truly would have better odds playing snap by yourself… Such unpredictable inconsistency cooking is truly... avant-garde. I suppose if you're into culinary masochism, this place is your sanctuary. Every bite's a surprise! Will your tastebuds be elated or assaulted by excessive seasoning? Should you order a rare steak but served a medium rare fear not! The floor staff will kindly return the mistake to kitchen to cook it further to become raw! Only the steak gods will know how…. Yet, amidst this culinary rollercoaster or poor cooking there’s a shining beacon of hope: Leah, from the floor staff. Her professionalism was the only consistent element in this unpredictable epicurean journey. In summary: Dive headfirst into the enigma that is Butch Annie’s. A truly exhilarating exploration of the unpredictable. Bon appétit!

This is easily one of the top burger joints in Cambridge. I don’t come here often enough. Please do visit when you get the chance.
