A decent restaurant with a good vibe. The food was generally very good but extremely expensive for what it is. Also a slight niggle on the amount of steaks that had already been chalked off by 8pm on a Saturday night (surely a busy night every week).

Had a great meal here. Loved the chefs counter. Great staff. Not a total convert to the shared plates thing as dishes get cold and flavours get mixed or clash on your plate… but that’s just me.

Absolutely delicious food, lovely attentive staff and loved the cosy atmosphere. We ordered the crunch loaf with treacle butter which was sweet and heavenly then shared a fillet steak with sides, all of which were just melt in the mouth gorgeous. Wine was excellent , all is all, a fabulous hidden gem of a place. Well worth navigating the security staff on the door for.

As we were joining another couple for a Christmas night out we checked the menu online and my husband was disappointed there were no steaks listed. On arrival we were shocked to see the beef carcasses hanging in glass fridges in the restaurant- unusual design decision and not for the faint hearted! We were given the menu to peruse and the waiter explained the complicated ordering of steak by type and weight. The restaurant has very little soft furnishings so the noise level is deafening on a busy Friday night - my husband and our friend who were sitting away from the waiter couldn’t hear a thing. Why not just list the steak on a piece of paper?! The food is good quality with some interesting flavours but there are ingredients not listed in the description (pickle onion monster munch on a pork taco) which could have caused problems. Unfortunately most of the food was cold and I am not a fan of excess fat on meat so it was a disappointing meal. The entrance is shared with a night club with doormen who are rude and quite menacing and the toilets are shabby with no toilet paper. Definitely not inline with a restaurant trying to sell expensive food and drinks. Generally a bit discombobulated and disappointing, I wouldn’t go back.

The service can sometimes be a *tad* slow. Everything else about this restaurant is exceptional. It feels like Hawksmoor before it grew - and the quality of steak is outrageously good. The sides are small, but delicious, and the venue pops with personality. If this was in London, you would never get a table. Take advantage before it is!

We had an exceptional lunch here. A lovely set menu which has encouraged us to think about returning for a dinner. A small but lively ambiance and attentive knowledgeable staff. Interesting flavours , although some things were yummied up so much I forgot what the vegetable was! But hey, everything is better with brown butter! Great Helles from Ampersand brewery too.

A wonderful experience me and my partner had coming here! The service was top notch with the servers explaining the menu and recommendations and just wonderful charisma! Lovely staff! The food was next level, the starters and the sides were so flavourful and the venison/pork chop was cooked to perfection and just packed with flavours! The butter with the crunch loaf was so tasty, we wish it could be bought separately as could easily take a tub of it home! Will definitely be coming back again! Thank you for the great experience!

The food is of an excellent standard, tasty and well presented. However, portion sizes are miserly for the price paid. I understand the focus is on quality rather than quantity but I expect to come away from a meal feeling full when I've paid over £40 a head (not including drinks). Atmosphere and service were both good but I think you can find better value for money in Norwich.

If you enjoy a meat-heavy dining experience with a focus on sharing and well-sourced ingredients, this place may be for you. We averaged £75 per head for our party of 4 and I'd say you get a pretty good experience for that if you are a foodie. A lot of the menu is steak, so you should enjoy that as well. There are quite interesting and quirky options you won't find anywhere else, definitely. I wouldn't recommend this place for vegetarians at all, though, as you are confronted with giant slabs of beef in fridges as you walk in.

Had dinner here this week, spending £300 for 2. Food is great but service poor. Prior to desserts, we ordered 3 x starters/small plates, 2 x mains/larger dishes + sides yet when we saw another tables' beef arrive, our eyes became bigger than our stomachs. The waitress suggested we also take the 500g beef for £70 and pushed us to do that as the kitchen was closing. If we had, it would have hardly been touched, a waste of money and ruined the meal. Why couldn't she do her job and advise us we had ordered enough already. I've never experienced that before. She worked there and it was our first time. Poor show on her part, otherwise good

It's doesn't bother me that this steak restaurant doesn't do chips! The Norfolk Peers in butter and spices were delicious. But it does bother me that on the night we went they had no fillet steak, nor t-bone, nor tomahawk, nor bavette. Sorry, just not good enough. Having said that our sirloin to share was perfectly cooked as was our friends' rump. Pulled pork tacos, and Cobble Lane cured meats excellent too. All the sides: potatoes, beetroot and goats cheese, griddled lettuce very tasty. I thought the bill for two (not particularly huge) steaks, four sides and two starters, with one round of drinks was toppy at £240. I've eaten here before and enjoyed it, but not sure I'd rush back given the wide choice of restaurants in Norwich.

Food was exceptional - 5 star (although the potatoes were mid) Service was great although I thoroughly hate discretionary charges - it definitely puts a bitter pill at 11.5% after spending so much money already. Your food should reflect the price of the business - which it does. We aren't in America and tipping shouldn't be forced. Vibe was ruined by having the 2 person table right by the door but fortunately I asked to move and the staff obliged. Just a tip - if those boards with cuts of meats that you mark off were moved over where the meat being dry aged was instead of the wine, the amount of foot traffic brushing by at least 4 tables would be greatly reduced and thus improve the experience.

A very pleasant surprise (especially given the unpromising frontage) and a genuinely novel experience. The unusual ingredients and very high standards of produce, every savoury dish being cooked to perfection (the pork chop was sensational), made for a memorable evening. Portions were also very generous. The sticky toffee pudding was acceptable but not quite up to the exceptionally high standards set by earlier courses. My only complaint was that the background music was loud and irritating in what was, I think, a misguided attempt to be funky. It did kind of fade away, though, as the evening wore on.

Approached our meal here with some hesitance ( don’t know why). However was absolutely blown away with the entire meal. Genuinely one of the best places I have eaten in Norwich. Food - 5 Stunning food. To be clear I am a meat lover and this place delivered on all fronts. Steak and Pork chop were arguably the best quality I’ve had in the city. Sides were delicious as were starters. Service - 5 Brilliant service from the whole team. Welcoming, conscientious, knowledgeable and attentive. All staff had a good vibe, and glass was never empty. This was to be a special meal to celebrate. We had seen good reviews and knew it would be expensive but if the quality was there then it seemed like it would be worth it. We got there as it opened in the evening and received a warm welcome. The service was very good throughout. For most of our meal we were the only people in the place. We had starters and these were excellent. Lovely flavours. Well cooked. Really good oysters and mussels and hake. Then it went down hill. There was nothing special about the meat except for the price. The cabbage side was lovely. The meat and the mustard mash lacked seasoning and flavour and were nearly cold because they had been put on cold plates. The steak had been sliced which also helped lose heat. We had a bottle of wine. At £60 it was one of the cheapest bottles available. It was decent wine, but not worth the money. The desserts were also disappointing. Again, they lacked flavour. The bill was a genuine shock. At £280 for 2 it was about £100 more than expected based on eating out in similar places. I guess it was partly our fault. We should have inspected the prices more closely. But the prices are not always prominent and can be hard to find. If you deduct the compulsory service charge then half the bill was the wine and the steak. Overall it was a very expensive and disappointing experience. Which is a shame because the place has atmosphere even when empty. The style of cooking suggests the food should be lovely and hot, coming off sizzling embers, but this did not happen for us.

5 Star loveliness Walk into this stylish, cosy hotspot to be charmed by the decor and fabulous team. I love good food/wine (and all of it) but my family doesn't eat red meat, we were blown away. Steak cooked to perfection and I only eat blue. Now an oyster convert I still feel I wouldn't go elsewhere for them. The sides are both soul food with the artichokes and inspiring with other vegetables. The hake was crazy good, the plaice both plentiful and moreish. Fab wine from Norfolk too. What I loved was the mix of couples, singles and families. A diamond in Norwich's rich restaurant smorgasbord. Go or you'll miss out.

The booking process is frustrating that if they have space you still have to book on the app and the site isn’t completely formatted kindly for mobiles, but we did it anyway. The restaurant is beautiful, the staff look the part. £7 for sprouts on side is steep when everyone is getting rid of them just after Xmas. The prime rib we chose was £12/100g and the smallest weight was 580g, which is enough for two but if you don’t want the same thing, this was the smallest quantity you could buy. Cocktails were lovely, I especially liked their version of an espresso martini. Little disappointed that the tables either side of us got two complementary Norfolk Crust loaves to take home with their bill, alas we did not, not sure why, but perhaps be more discreet handing out freebies if it’s not for everyone. I’d go back again but at circa £100/head probably more a special night out, I’m still a big fan of Prime’s steak even more so since they moved out of the upstairs of the Edith Cavelle.

VIBES We came in on a Friday and sat at the bar (we did have a reservation, so I'm not sure if they take walk-ins, but you definitely could try). I'd recommend sitting at any of the four to six seats on the left side of the bar to get a view of the chefs working in the kitchen. But anywhere along the bar looked great. The tables behind us looked fine and I think some of them have views out the second floor windows. But overall the place was dimly lit, but not so dim you can't see. And it had a cozy, intimate feel to it. Great for romantic nights out or dinner for four. They can accommodate bigger tables, I'm sure, but it seems best suited for 2 to 4 tops. STAFF Our main server (whose name I've forgotten - SORRY - but I'm fairly certain she said she was from Colchester area which is where my wife has family) -- anyway, she was great. Very friendly and willing to answer any questions we had about anything. She also made my Old Fashioned which was delicious and then walked me through the wine as I was trying to find something that would pair with dinner. We also had several other servers and/or chefs deliver food or pass by that we chatted with who were also friendly and available to answer anything with enthusiasm and knowledge But, everyone we had contact with was fantastic. FOOD (but not the beef, yet) & WINE For one of our starters we had the Black Battered Hake with Mushy Pea Emulsion, and Vinegar Chips from their current 12/2023 menu. The hake was outstanding with a nice, vinegary crunch from the chips. Not an overwhelming size but not so small that you felt you were being underserved. We also had a beet marinated salmon special, which had dollops of a savory, but mild white sauce which of course I cannot recall for our starters. The salmon was extremely tender but not mushy. And you only had a hint of the beet flavor and more of the beet color in the salmon. (I don't even like beets). For her main, my wife had the Pork Chop, Brix Tonkatsu, Katsobushi which came with a small of cup of sauce that is reminiscent of a savory BBQ sauce with the lightest touch of heat on it. We asked to take an extra potion of sauce home. And two people could share the chop, to be honest. It was a very generous portion. And I just nibbled a piece of the leftovers yesterday (48 hours lafter) and it was still so tender. We also had a side dish of brussel sprouts with a n'djua bread crumb topping and there was another element that I have forgotten (sorry, I'm the worst). But it was also a very nice portion but not overwhelming. And also delicious. Big surprise. They have a small but well curated "by the glass" wine collection as well as a number of bottles available. And you can taste anything that is open to help guide your selection. Obviously, most by the bottle options won't be available for tasting unless one happens to be open. THE BEEF There are two large blackboards hanging over the bar. Each had a separate cow with info on where it was sourced. The various cuts were listed -- ribeye, filet, rump, picanha, sirloin, etc -- and each had the price per 100g and the weights of each cut available. And once you ordered your cut they crossed it off the board (quite mysteriously if you're not paying attention). Apparently, they butcher the animal (that day?) and then weigh and list the cuts and that's what's on offer for the day. But it's literally one cut, so once you order it's gone for the day, so if you want the widest selection, I would get their early versus late. I had the picanha (260g) which was plenty for me. I had read other reviews (and then experienced) that said the beef may sometimes come to you a little lighter than you ordered. For example, I asked for medium rare but it was more rare than medium rare. So I would either have that conversation with your server or order one level up. i.e. order medium if you want medium rare, for example. I chose to eat it as presented and it was still excellent. Fantastic flavor with a beautiful sear on it. I know a few people have complained about the meat coming pre-sliced from the kitchen but I prefer that they slice it. A good chef (like these folks) will cut it properly against the grain to ensure that it's tender and not chewy. If you don't know what you're doing and cut your beef incorrectly you can sabotage your own meal. But the beef is the superstar of the restaurant and there's a reason why. TL;DR Will absolutely be going back the next time we're through. Highly recommend.

A really disappointing experience. After hearing so many good reviews, we decided to give this place a try for my partners birthday meal, however we left feeling totally ripped off. We shared a selection of starters including the muscles which were served In a bowl on a plate of pebbles - why? No empty dish was given for the shells or anything to clean your hands with as muscles are usually served. The Mutton tacos where the highlight but incredibly small. My partner ordered a 570g ribeye for a price of £57. Unfortunately when it arrived half the plate was fat some parts of which had not been cooked fully and it was served already sliced. This price was just for the steak, nothing to accompany it unless you paid extra for sides and sauces. We also ordered the seabass which was served whole with the head still on and a sauce on top of the skin, so unfortunately the sauce was completely lost as I had to pull all the skin off to get to the fish itself. The sides were very under whelming for £6 each - 4 carrots, still hard! We had no alcohol and my partner ordered a diet coke - £3 and served in a small tall glass with so much ice. I watched the barmaid pour it from a can and then put the rest behind the bar. My partner raised the issue about the steak to the waiter when our plates were cleared. He was seen to talk to the chef, but then nothing was done. We decided against desserts as we were already disappointed and thank goodness as our bill was £156 and a service charge had been added, bit of a joke really. The whole experience was really disappointing and I couldn't help but feel the place was very pretencious which made me feel uncomfortable.

We were blown away by the food, service and atmosphere. First time customer but will definitely be returning. We tried a selection of the snacks sides and mains all were incredible and could be shared and mixed and matched beautifully. It was all amazing but I want to give a special shout out to: the loaf and acid butter, the squash that was with the vegetarian meal (let them know in advance you have a veggie in your party), and the fish with dill bechamel. Chef Piper prepared most of our mains and sides so would like to give them a special mention and thanks.

Went in for a meal for 6 last Friday. The place looks really nice, seeing all the dry aged meat as you arrive really get you hungry. Once seated the server came over and gave us an excellent introduction to the menus which was was the building blocks on the journey we were about to embark on. Even before seeing any food we had felt like we had made a good choice. We all ordered something different from the 50 day and 120 day aged steaks menus with some sides to ensure we were demonstrating a good balance of nutrition. All the beef was ordered rare and absolutely beautifully cooked. Each cut had its own flavour. An absolute flavour experience. Even the veg we had on the side had soaked up flavour notes from the coals. After eating, the chef even came to check all was good. Fantastic food with the service to match.. Will definately be coming back.

We’ve been here a few times now, the setting, ambience and food are amazing. It would be a 5 star review if it wasn’t for a couple of the staff members. One female is frosty, and comes across as condescending when explaining the “standard patter” of how to order, even though when asked we now say we’ve been before. And a guy makes you feel very rushed towards end of meal. He goes to great lengths to remind you you have to leave at regular intervals, which is a shame when you’re spending that kind of money you should feel pressured into hurrying up. Can’t knock the food though, and most of the staff are lovely, especially the chef that brings out the donut.

Settled for this one as couldn't get into the L'Hexigon and so pleased as this was an amazing experience, dining at its best. Ambience interesting with an industrial style interior with open plan kitchens providing chefs theatre. Both meat and Fish available with emphasis on sharing. We opted for the 105 day old ribeye although wish we went for the whole John Dory perhaps next visit. Food was exceptional. This is a small very professionally run restaurants with only 32 covers which we thoroughly enjoyed and wouldn't hesitate to recommend

Been wanting to visit here for some time as we have heard such great things and true to what we had been told this place was totally amazing. We had the 106day matured sirloin and the rib eye and it was some of the best steak I’ve had anywhere in the world. We also enjoyed a nice bottle of Napa Valley cabsav which complemented the meat perfectly. The deserts were equally as nice opting for the bone marrow doughnuts and a sorbet. This place isn’t the cheapest but you get what you pay for.. Cannot wait to visit again.

You must try this restaurant! We stumbled across this place on a date night after we had been for drinks in the bar found above it (Gonzos Tea Room). Having no idea what we were getting ourselves into we asked if they had a table for 2. To which they replied yes, at the chefs table. These seats were amazing to say the least. To be able to see the team working together in the open plan kitchen was a real treat. All the staff members were super friendly and made it their mission to make sure you fully understood the menu. The bar staff made amazing cocktails and were keen to impress with the variety on offer. Hearing your food order get shouted out around the kitchen gives you goosebumps, as then you are able to watch the team slowly piece your order together like a work of art. If this was all they had to offer it would've been 10/10. But the team still went above and beyond. Upon completing the order the chef personally walked the food to us to present and describe the processes and ingredients behind each and everything on the plate. This really made you appreciate what you were being served. We went for the Japanese bread and oysters to start. Along with the 540g ribeye steak and sides to share as the main. All cooked and prepared to absolute perfection. Not a bad word to say about this place, and my only regret is that I should have ordered more. We will definitely be back.

The prime rib was amazing, the confit potatoes were exceptional, the wine pairings were considered and faultless and the Bloody Mary oyster appetiser was so good we ordered again. Service - brilliant However, after a five star visit the doughnut pushed us over the edge. Would give seven stars if possible.

Took my boyfriend here for his birthday, we got to sit at the chefs 'table'. This restaurant did not disappoint. We were treated so well by the staff and enjoyed some DELICIOUS food. The cocktails were also good, and the barman really wanted to ensure we were getting drinks that we would enjoy. Everyone seemed to have a wealth of knowledge around their areas of expertise. Pricey but worth the money, especially after hearing about how the food is prepared and how all of the animal is used!! Recommend this restaurant all the time. Will definitely be back.

What an amazing night, amazing food and service. In Norwich from Glasgow for a long weekend. Decided to book as the concept of the restaurant was really interesting. We arrived and were welcomed by a lovely young French girl. We were shown to a counter table directly in front of the kitchen. That is when the meal turned into an experience. Ian talked us through the menu and gave us the best recommendations ever. We had the loaf and treacle, don't be fooled, I don't like treacle but this is next level, my wife Marion would have been happy to eat this all night. We also had the flat bread. Both starters were amazing. Then the mains, sirloin, Pork chop, carrots and mash. Sound homely and it is if you can cook homely to Michelin star level. There was nothing that could have been any better. To round everything off we finished with nettle sorbet. How the hell you can get nettles to taste this good is beyond me. All of this and watching the two young chefs cook and have banter and just really look as if they were enjoying themselves made our night. Ian thanks for looking after us and tell Lorna we will send the tablet next week.

An innovative menu and the use of local produce was commendable. The chefs were friendly and on hand to explain the dishes, which was a warming touch. This was in contrast to the frosty front of house lady. The lack of table seating in preference of bar counter stools was not ideal. The dining experience overall was ok. The flavour of dishes set against the listed ingredients did not always match expectation. The mutton was tough to the point of being inedible. I have no regrets dining here, though at the price level set, I would probably opt elsewhere next time.

If you are looking for a proper family run chilled out dinner with personal service then this is the place. Do not expect fast cooked food with rubbish service - what you get here is totally authentic home-cooked food served by wonderful staff. Definitely book ahead so they can provide you with the best service. Enjoy
