Brightside Diner is an absolute gem that feels like stepping into a time machine and landing in a perfect blend of "Stranger things" nostalgia and "little chef" charm. The retro decor is spot-on, transporting you back to a simpler, quirkier era. Even the toilets match the old-school vibe—immaculately clean and totally on theme! The atmosphere here is unbeatable and so much better than the alternative next door—Brightside truly shines brighter. If Little Chef had a cooler, more stylish cousin, this would be it. Don’t miss it if you’re in the area!

Best roadside breakfast I have ever eaten and I have eaten a lot! Loads of stuff on the menu I wanted to try but 100% will be back. Great decor, really chilled vibes and a very attentive waitress called Charlotte providing service that was just right. Spot on!

First visit to Brightside on our way to view the Christmas lights at Powderham Castle. We had a meal with our 2 grandchildren. Food was tasty and hot, and we didn't have to wait long. It is the tastiest burger I have had in years. We were welcomed warmly, and the service was very good. We will return.

Stop, don't go McD's or Costa or subway at Exeter services, there is only one option Brightside. Make the time you will not regret it. Nostalgia never tasted so good or was delivered this well. A very welcome return for the roadside dining experience. The food was fantastic, with excellent ingredients, no scrimping, served quickly on hot plates. Despite a 4 hour drive home I was really pleased to invest 40 minutes here for the family breakfast. Homely and welcoming they have a great vision and executed really well. If I had one closer to me in Hampshire I would go because I wanted to not just because it was on the way. 10/10 loved it.

Lovely period setting with surprisingly non-over-inflated prices. Fast and friendly service, reason for 3* food was due to limited vegetarian alternatives in the fried breakfast (replace Avacado with veg sausage). Would visit again 🙂

We entered the restaurant thinking that this is gonna be good and was greated by a lovely male server who offered us the menus. My girlfriend has extreme allergies to Gluten and were happy to see a Gluten free menu. We ordered the Pork Breakfast role and Avocado and Toast from the Gluten free menu and also a mocha. The mocha was ok . The food was served and my Pork Jolly Roll was extremely salty which I dowsed with Ketchup to remove the taste of salt from it, what worse than my unpalatable food was my girlfriends burnt avocado toast which she was looking forward too. We told a lady server about it and all she offered us another toast. My girlfriend said ok to it but instead of giving us gluten free toast was given normal toast which would have killed my girlfriend. My knowledge of food made me recognize it.We mentioned it to first male server who said he was a manager and he was extremely apologetic about it all and also did not charge us for the meal which to be honest we wanted to pay for as we are not free loaders. Staff needs training when it comes to allergies as people can die here if not served the right food according to their allergies.Also there was an operation manager sitting in one of booths with her dirty shoes on top of the bench and that to us was not expected from a member of staff and we have the picture of it, if needed I can send it to owners or managers. Will not return to this place as it seems to be unsafe.

Great little dinner. The food was fantastic, and for a party of 12 adults and two kids, all the food came out together. Staff is very friendly and professional. Can't wait to come back to try the curry.

What can I say , WOW , great food and amazing service , we had a lunch at the Ram jam , which is now Brightside , we thought it was great value for money and the decor was brilliant , food came piping hot and served with a smile , Thankyou everyone , keep it up , we will be back ,.

Great place to stop for a bite to eat. Funky retro decor (including the obligatory avacado sanitary ware i in the bathrooms!). Highly recommend the breakfast hash but make sure you're hungry because it's big!

Waited 10 mins to be seated even though empty seats everywhere, 40 mins later not even had drink order taken! Gave up at this point

Absolute gem! Breakfast was possibly the nicest I've ever had! Staff where really attentive and nothing was too much trouble. 10/10 would recommend this place to anyone and will definitely be coming back!

Just visited for the first time ever and myself and 2 others were made jealous that we don't have these diner's in the southeast. I have read the negative reviews and have found myself in disbelief at people's negativity as we all enjoyed every moment in your restaurant. My one note which isn't even a big deal is to have the music match the American design ie. Country music. Other than that greatly appreciated the stop for our road trip eastbound and down.

Decided to go here for breakfast as a family treat, big mistake !! No warm welcome upon arrival, had to remind lady who took our order 20 minutes earlier for our drinks. She had clearly forgotten our order, but no apology. drinks arrived, but not entirely what we ordered,, when this was pointed out to the male waiter his response was ‘ I don’t know as I’ve just started my shift ‘ again no apology. After a further 10 minutes no sign of our breakfast order even though 2 tables that came in after us got theirs. Sorry to say we got up and left. This was a great example of how to get everything wrong from the get go. Brightside are obviously making so much money that they didn’t require our £70 ish order. We live local and this could had been a good partnership. Top tip, employ staff that want to be there. Will never return.

Visited Sunday 27th October at 3.30pm. We waited to be seated. When someone eventually came over they asked did we want food. They then said the kitchen is now closed. No explanation when we could clearly see people eating. Their loss of business.

Amazing diner which is more than your average roadside diner, great atmosphere and gorgeous retro interiors (and the best Loos ever). We always stop when we're on the way to Cornwall. Highly recommended ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

We had a burger and a curry. The burger I had was a bacon and cheese burger, which was really nice and I'd recommend this if you like classic burgers.

A retro style restaurant. The coffee and breakfast was excellent and a great place to stop on your journey in and out of Devon and Cornwall.

Crap took too long for order then we asked where our coffee was then arrived but no ash browns in nearly a hour we left and went to mcs

This is our second visit, originally visit the A303 branch last year was a terrible over priced experience. We thought we would try the restaurant located on the Devon Expressway..... wish we hadn't bothered. Took an age to get get the servers attention to order and when they did finally come over they decided to skip asking If we'd like drinks and went straight in to take our food order. Think there was only one other family in the whole restaurant so they weren't busy buy any stretch of the imagination. Food and drinks were served very quickly. The food was of a very poor standard AGAIN just like our first visit. My Eggs were literally swimming in grease and sliding around my plate, the pork was one of the worst cuts I've ever had. I was expecting ham egg and chips not a inch thick slab of Fat and yet more grease! The highlight of my meal was the 9 chunky chips that came with it but unfortunately the grease made a few of them soggy. The kids didn't finish their meals as like me full of grease literally dripping of the pizza. Wasn't worth complaining to the onsite staff as I thought they already looked feed up and none of them wanted to be there, probably had enough of customers moaning at them, problems start at the top with these chain restaurants. Just a bit of decent lighting might lift the mood of the place!... it's so unbelievably Dark.

We have just had an amzing breakfast here. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble. Food was amazing and freshly cooked. Was made even better that it us dog friendly and they welcomed our dog with fuss and treats.

Since this Brightside opened they have not really tried to make their mark and draw customers in. The are in a prime location on the A38 opposite Exeter Racecourse. My wife and I live locally and have eaten here 4 times since it opened. The first time was a bad experience - BUT our last 2 visits have been excellent. Today were were served by Neil who made us welcome and was attentive to our ordering and the timely serving of our food. My wife had fish and chips which she really enjoyed, whilst I had a prawn, anchovie and avocado salad with a side of fries and onion rings !! My wife's fish and chips were freshly cooked and crispy. My chips and onion rings were crisp and tasty and not greasy. The salad was fresh and tasty, although the "prawns" were just small shrimps. The menu is varied and caters for all tastes. Have a look on line. They need to let passers by know that they cater for the whole family and give them a glimpse of what the menu offers We will definitely be back as it is on our doorstep.

A lovely retro diner on the site of an old Little Chef. Popular for breakfasts, especially on Sundays. Large car park. Burgers and pizzas are great! All day breakfast looked fantastic. Friendly staff. Clean and dog friendly too.

This place never fails to surprise me. I’m quite a food snob, organic and local leaning and this place is pretty solid. Really tasty food. Local coffee. Quality ingredient. The water is even filtered. The styling is the slickest i’ve seen of the 70s/80s US diner theme. Not naff at all. Pizza is sourdough. The mac and cheese is delicious. i come here with my daughter all the time.

Proper 70’s style diner vibe - but lovely and clean with kitsch loos too! Shakshuka brunch was lush. Washed down with a mug of great black coffee. Staff are helpful and friendly wearing individual 70’s threads.

4.5 stars probably. Bit of a wait to get a table. Staff friendly but looked a bit stretched. Gave the kids an activity sheet (great to stave away boredom) - I had to ask twice for crayons to fill the sheet out 🤣 Milkshakes were unavailable as the machine was 'out of order'. The drinks seemed to take quite a while - bar staff liked a natter! Food was lovely. There was a promotion on - stamping and card to get a free toy. I had to ask about it, rather than being made aware.

When Brightside, Exeter opened - it was amazing. It was original, quirky, great music, retro vibe with great service and food. A happy and fun place to visit. After multiple visits since it's opening - it just seemed to get a little bit worse each time, until now it is no longer worth going. Our most recent visit was so disappointing (and will be our last unless hopefully improves - I really hope it goes back to how good it was when it opened) 3 x items we ordered were not unavailable, you can't get an all-day vegetarian breakfast anymore (meat versions are available), one item we ordered wasn't brought out, there is less choice for vegetarians now, the food is mediocre and overpriced, small portions and poor service (when it used to be excellent). It simply doesn't feel special anymore and quite average which makes the whole retro thing a bit weird (background music is no particular genre now which doesn't help). Unfortunately it feels like the owner/company has lost enthusiasm for it. I really hope they find it again and things improve - there are plenty of other places for eating out. We used to recommend it to everyone but wont be anymore...

While you've been in Exeter and heading either to Plymouth or north on the M5 then a Brightside is well worth the visit. Great food choice and standard, today they seemed a little slammed due to a low staff count but they did a great job. Food arrived hot and tasted great. Will we go again, indeed.

We had a lovely breakfast here, the berry & mascarpone pancakes were the best I’ve ever had; although very rich and filling. My husband had steak & eggs & it didn’t disappoint. They were very busy on the bank holiday Saturday. We were told about the 30 minute wait and we were happy to wait. They needed more staff as the poor waitresses struggled to keep on top of everything but were trying their best. Lots of tables needed clearing & food was waiting at the service hatch. We didn’t mind waiting as we were in no rush and enjoyed the food. The staff were polite and helpful.

My family and I absolutely love this place!! We have visited this location 3 times in a month as we were driving past, the staff are amazing and so friendly, and the food is above and beyond! My new favourite cheeseburger 🤣🙏 We loved it so much we even bought some merch, some really cool T-shirts 😁

This place looks great but we arrived and waited ages to be shown to a table. When we finally got shown to a table no one came back to take our order. When another table asked if they needed to sit somewhere else to be served we decided to give up and leave. There were plenty of staff around just no one seemed to be taking orders. Its a shame because the menu looked good.

I have been here a few times and it has alway been “average “. The last time thought it was pretty bad…. Food was cold and one mushroom cost £2.15! Over priced and not worth it.

Dropped in for breakfast for pancakes for a change. Great atmosphere and service. Helpful that it also opens early too. The rest of the menu looks good & judging by how others tucked in I’m guessing that they enjoyed their cooked breakfast as much as I enjoyed my pancakes. Will be back and will bring friends!

Great to see such a lot of big improvements since we visited last year. Best gluten free selection I've seen. Food very tasty and lots of options. Would definitely recommend the gluten free chunky chips! Staff very nice and helpful when needed and they made it very bright! Will be visiting again soon!

As a regular route 5,30, and 38, I was a little dismayed when I saw that they were changing to brightside, but I was willing to give it a go... this is where it gets disappointing. I had pancakes and bacon with maple syrup. I thought I got a kids' menu portion 3 rashers of streaky bacon and 3 pancakes with a small milk jug of mapel syrup... I think this was close to £10.. and to be fair if it was any good it would have been on, but it's was nothing to write home about.. my wife enjoyed her burger and my son had pancakes off the kids menu and got 3 pancakes with strawberries and blueberries I think and his was half the price of mine... I'm disappointed that the route franchise has gone as and brightside ( not so bright ) has taken over....
