6 of us went in for a bar lunch today at 12:15pm, we ordered 2 tuna, mayo and mozzarella panini's, 3 steak and onion paninis, 3 coffees, soft drinks and a child's meal of macaroni cheese and chips. By 12:50 we were still waiting for the food and the coffees were finished. The child's meal arrived which was only lukewarm so was returned to be heated up. The tuna paninis eventually arrived and we were told the steak and onions was being cooked - we had finished the tuna paninis before the steak ones finally arrived. There was no mention on the menu of the steak being in a marinade and one of the ladies found it tasted vinegary plus she found a lemon pip on her steak. We finally finished our meal at 1:40 but none of us really enjoyed it because of the lengthy wait - and the way the food came in dribs and drabs. To be fair, the young man who served us was pleasant and very apologetic, he gave us refills of our coffee on the house and didn't charge for the steak and onion panini which had the lemon pip in it but the whole experience left us feeling we won't be going back

Best things about the Brig o Tay are the location and the friendly staff. Maybe not 5 Star but well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Visited this hotel this week for drinks and game of pool. Used the lounge bar. The owner was serving. A very pleasant person. The drink is very reasonable priced. The lounge bar and toilets were very clean. The owner is from Portugal and the food is of that origin. Would return.

This year we decided to eat out for Christmas and decided on the Brig o' Tay as I thought it was reasonably priced compared to other places. (There was 9 of us including 3 kids and 1 teenager) I was a bit dubious at first with it being a buffet but there was an excellent selection of food and you could eat as much or as little as you wanted. The staff were very friendly and attentive too. I would definitely book again.

Found totally by chance and popped in for quick Friday meal. Place was empty so wasn't sure what to expect. Staff were very friendly and service was good. The scampi main and piri piri chicken were okay but the cataplana was superb. Full of flavour and loads of succulent prawns and monkfish. Great value - why was it empty?

We were a group of four friends for dinner (at 800pm) in the Taste of Portugal restaurant on Thursday 19th July. The bar/dining room are on the first floor with a spectacular view across the Firth of Tay to Dundee. When we arrived, one other table was occupied - by a family group of about six. When they left an hour later, we had the place to ourselves. Service seemed a little slow but everything must have been coked to order - I had calamaris £3.95) followed by "Lulas" (£10.95) which was like Wiener Schnitzel. Two of our party had the classic Portuguese Bacalhau (cod). All were good. Surprisingly, there was no wine list - when we said that we would like white wine, we were shown two (chilled but unpriced) bottles and told "They keep changing; this is what we have today". Our total food bill (4 starters. 4 mains) was £66.20. We also had 2 bottles of a Portuguese white wine (@ £25) and 3 coffees which took the total to £122.60. After dinner we were joined, for an enjoyable chat, by the Portuguese lady who had done all the cooking.

My husband and I visited Brig OTay for an evening meal on Thursday. The restaurant wasn't busy so we were shown to a table without delay. The menu us not huge but has a varied choice of fish, steak, chicken and a veggie dish. The food is all freshly cooked when you order which meant a wait of approx. half an hour but it was well worth waitng for. Portions are huge and delicious, we couldn't manage a sweet though they were very tempting. I can recommend eating here and would definitely go back if we are in the area again. You will not be disappointed.

I took my father here last night thinking we'd just take a chance. We were a bit concerned to walk in to an empty restaurant on a Saturday night, but we couldn't have been more wrong. We didn't reel remotely awkward despite being the only diners and there was no pressure to finish. The food was absolutely excellent - The menu is not extensive, but it's beautifully cooked and the portions are extremely generous I had king prawns and monkfish and my father had steak and both were cooked to perfection. The wine was one neither of us knew but it was really pleasant and very reasonably priced. All this with stories about where the traditions behind the dishes when we enquired and a stunning view across the Tay.I can't speak to other people's experience of slow service given that we were the only people there, but having eaten at 3 other, considerably more expensive restaurants this week, The Brig 'O Tay stands out as by far the best.

this restaurant was so quiet today at lunch time that I thought the food must be awful. However the view across the tay, the Portugese music and the enthusiastic staff and owner ensured I relaxed immediately. The menu offer of £9.95 for two courses seemed to good to be true. I can testify that the Portugese steak and the Cataplana dishes are fantastic and the homemade chips brilliant. The service is a little slow because the food is freshly prepared. The surroundings are a little dated but the food more than compensates

A party of 7 on a week night not booked. We were advised before we ordered that they were short staffed and the food would take at least 30/45 minutes. 75 minutes later we suggested we had waited long enough. We were told by the owner that the food was being plated and would be with us in minutes and that a discount would be given. The food arrived not good one meal came approx 7 mins later than the others. This meal was unacceptable and was not eaten. On leaving it was suggested that the last meal was not to be charged for and 25 percent discount was offered. We paid 50 percent of the bill and left. It is such a great pity as the views out of the windows of the river Tay and its two bridges was breath taking. I would visit the "Taste of Portugal" the name of the restaurant but only for a drink and to take in the views.

We booked a table before 8pm, and arrived shortly afterwards at 8.15. We were told that the food might take a while, as they cook everything from scratch. There were only 15 other customers that evening (in a restaurant with over 50 seats), so we hoped it wouldn’t take so long. However, we were surprised that our five meal did not arrive until 9.30. We were given a free round of drinks though, with apologies for the long wait. However, the main problem was that the meals were not very nice. We suspect the chef was rushing by then, as many other reviewers seem to praise the food: Our piri-piri chicken was not properly cooked in the middle. The monkfish meal was tasty but way too salty, and there was hardly any fish in it. The steak was mostly chewy. And the calamari was not stuffed with prawns and onions (as stated on the menu), but with a prawn white sauce, which was slimy and tasteless. For most meals, we were asked if we want it medium-spiced, mild or hot – we all asked for medium. However, all meals that then arrived were not spicy at all. The waitress (who seemed to be waiting there on her own that night) was nice and apologised many times. (We were almost sorry for her as she was constantly rushing around and apologising.) And we were given a discount (did not get charged for the undercooked chicken.) Plus the location is pleasant, with nice view over the Tay. But we won’t be coming back. We wish they honestly told us they were understaffed when we called, so we went elsewhere. This was not a good value for money!

I visited here with my girl friend on a Tuesday evening. There was a large group gathered at one end of the restaurant so we were seated in a quiet place, by a window with a view over the Tay Road Bridge. Mrs Rodrigues brought the menu and as we chose our food we enjoyed a pint of Sagres (Portuguese) beer and a delicious G&T. There were complimentary bread rolls with an olive oil and balsamic vinegar dip. The food arrived and was very good indeed. My girlfriend was unsure about her chicken breast but this was replaced by a completely fresh portion, heaped with delicious handmade chips and served up with a plethora of apologies, accompanied by complimentary white wine. Overall, a very pleasant dining experience. The staff were friendly and Mrs Rodrigues was enthusiastic about giving us travel tips for our forthcoming visit to Lisbon. I look forward to my next visit to 'A Taste of Portugal'.

She offered to grill them so we take them home to eat later! I am not making this up! We were offered a glass of port as compensation which we declined.Wont be back.

We have been out and about in Newport for at least 10 years now and have always planned nights out for food and drinks in Dundee. We decided to give the Taste of Portugal menu a try this time as we had another reason to be in Newport again. The smell was delicious and I asked very quickly what it was chef was cooking up it was Piri Piri chicken a very traditional Portuguese dish. So the menu was easy! I chose medium in spice from mild/medium/hot. It was still pretty spicy to my taste so next time I will go for mild and I am sure to still get the full flavour of this traditional dish. The rest of my party chose from a Scottish menu and we're all very happy with their dishes, steak pie, fish and chips and macaroni with cheese. The chips are worth mentioning, the are really good, so good we made comment to the owner about them. Fresh, not frozen and lovely crisp, dry & golden all the qualities I look for even from a chip shop. I am a bit fussy about the chips, if you choose to indulge then I believe they should be worth it.The restaurant is a little old fashioned, it could perhaps do with some more music (so conversations are not overheard) and a good wine list. We fully appreciate that in order to have all of these things they need more guests. So go, take your family, your friends and enjoy a feast in what is a hidden gem. A friend who is also a chef was enjoying dinner at the same time, she recommended the squid main course dish so that will be next for me.The owners are just lovely too, Portuguese/South African couple so you can chat about the food which they are clearly passionate about.

We initially visited here midweek stopped for a juice chatted to the owner and booked a table for Friday. On the day we were welcomed immediately by a very friendly waitress who showed us our seats and gave us drinks and food menus. Waitress arrived few minutes later to take drinks orders then gave us plenty time to choose our starters and main course without pressurising us. The food was exceptional just like being back in Portugal it did take a little bit of time but this is definitely acceptable as all freshly prepared and cooked for your preference. It was my partner's birthday and we were going to choose a pudding however he was surprised by the lady owner/chef making homemade Nata's presented straight from the oven, mmmmmmm to die for. Once the meal was finished my partner and I had a lovely chat with the chef/owner who was full of knowledge and passion about her food, friendly welcoming and lovely. Spoke with her husband on leaving and had to agree we were not dissapointed by our delicious meal or the service so once again a big Thankyou to you and your staff we will definitely be back.

Used an It Is On voucher on Friday 10th October and as we'd never had Portuguese food, were really looking forward to trying it. We weren't disappointed........both had mushroom soup with lovely fresh bread, which was lovely and tasty, no seasoning required. We then had the Cataplana, which came served in its own metal terrine at the table and was packed full of king prawns and monkfish cooked with rice and vegetables. Again it was seasoned perfectly and was amazing. As we were sitting quite near to the kitchen, we were able to see other diners meals passing and everything looked fab. The staff couldn't have been nicer, attentive but not intrusive and the only reason I didn't give a 5 star rating was that the restaurant was extremely cold as if the heating was either broken or had not been switched on. It didn't spoil our evening but I would've liked it to be a bit warmer.........will definitely be going back......

The lady (owner) who runs the kitchen can defiantly cook Portuguese food - however if you're expecting Portuguese atmosphere, forget it. You’re sitting in an overly lit 1980’s function room, dim the lights and put some candles on the tables, it’s not hard. The waitress was very nice, but I asked for a dish on the menu which she didn’t understand, I had to read out the description -stuffed squid, but the name on the menu was “Lulas Recheadas”. The Portuguese Rose turned out to be a South African wine, and the house rose (which I ordered) turned out to be a low alcohol wine (5%). As this wasn’t mentioned on the wine list nor did the waitress explain I complained and the owner made us feel very uncomfortable and told us “I will be making a loss”. My husband ordered the piri piri chicken which while chatting about the wine she (the chef/owner) mistook for the pork!!!! It had also clearly been pre-cooked as it wasn’t heated up very well, and from our experience in Portugal, this dish didn’t resemble the delicious BBQed chicken we’ve eaten there. The menu also says “Handmade chips” mmmm, they looked very like frozen ones(McCain Classics Beefeater) from the look of other customers plates. The starters were awful, the Bruschetta (should be - grilled bread rubbed with garlic and topped with tomatoes, olive oil, salt and pepper ect.) was 2 slices of baguette with a slice of mozzarella and a piece of tomato popped on top. And the King prawn dish I ordered had a lovely sauce, but the prawns were rubbery and tasted as if they had been added to a ready prepared sauce to barely heat them up. The only thing I can say that’s not negative was the lulas I ordered was authentic. This could be such a special place but the owners don’t have the first clue about running a restaurant. We were using an Itison voucher - but that should make no difference to the experience.

This is the first bad review I have written but our experience last night was dreadful. We had an Itison voucher that can only be used on Thursday & Friday nights, I called earlier this week and spoke to a very nice man who booked us in for 7pm Thursday. I then later on received a voicemail from a lady who said they were very busy at 7pm could I come at 6pm or book for another night? Thats okay, I didn't mind that. I called yesterday to confirm we were going at 6pm and the gentleman was vague and said if that was what the voicemail said then that was okay. So we turned up at 6pm. The large restaurant was nearly empty with only 2 other couples in. We spoke to the waitress who scowled and seemed totally surprised then looked around and said that she didn't think she had a seat.. she then disappeared off to the kitchen and when she came back we were seated right in between the other 2 table who were already in, despite there being quite a few tables free next to the bar. We then waited for a very long time to order, as did the other 2 tables. The service was just unbearably slow and the girl scowled the whole time. Another couple arrived and were treated very rudely and despite having booked were told there wasn't a table. They pointed at a table to be told it was a 'staff' table. Girl vanished off to kitchen and after much vagueness decided to set that table for them. Only it took forever for her to do it. By the time she finally took our order my partner was ready to leave but I thought that maybe even though the service was bad the food might be nice. It was mediocre. The bread wasn't very nice or fresh. Partners soup choice had ran out and he was offered mushroom as an alternative. He's pretty sure it was mushroom soup out a tin with some coriander on top. His meal was okay but the salad wasn't very nice and the rice was bland, the meat was okay. My chicken didn't have a huge amount of flavour, was a bit dry and the chips were very greasy and a bit raw inside. Two further couples arrived whilst we were eating and they waited a ridiculously long time for their order to be taken as well. The slow service could be forgiven if the waitress had actually been polite but she was doing not a very good job and either looked vague or scowled and I would have forgiven the service if we had been given a delicious meal. It wasn't worth the cost of the voucher. Although I must note that another couple who had a fish dish said it was delicious (and that actually did look really nice) but they were appalled by the service as well. It was a 2 course offer but I didn't stay for my pudding as we knew it would just be another really long wait and the quality of the main course didn't leave me with much hope for dessert being any better. I actually heard the lady owner say something along the lines of 'these itison people just turn up'. Well they shouldn't have sold so many vouchers and they should not have booked so many people (although the number that was in was not many for a restaurant) and they really need to send their waitress on a customer service course! It is such a shame as we were really looking forward to Portuguese food. The owners seem nice but they clearly are in way over their depth. I would have spoken to them at the time when we we had been there for so long and we just wanted to get home. We won't be going back and I doubt any of the other diners who were in at the same time as us will be back either. This is a real shame.

We hadn't been in the Brig O Tay for a couple of years and probably that was because it was so quiet the last time we were there. However, we decided to give it another go as a couple of the reviews on Tripadvisor were very good. We were not disappointed. Yes it was still a bit quiet but if the food and service are anything to go by then this place should be a lot busier. The young local waitress was very pleasant and informative about the food. She came by the table several times to make sure everything was OK. The food was very good. We both had the Portuguese dish Kataplana (might have the spelling wrong) which is a monkfish, prawn and rice dish in a lovely sauce. I don't eat dairy or eggs so I was pleasantly surprised to be offered an extremely tasty champagne sorbet when I usually have to drink black coffee and watch my husband eat his pudding. We didn't go for the view as we have that view every day but we still enjoyed watching the wading birds on the sandbank. The décor of this restaurant is dated but then it is a very old establishment and maybe it would not be right to add the modern touch. We all complain when our old pubs get bought by the big boys so maybe we should embrace the history of this place and enjoy all the old photos around the room. I always forgive décor in favour of cleanliness and the only thing I might update is the carpet going up the stairs from the front door. The Brig O Tay deserves more customers and we will be back to sample one of the other options on their menu.

The wonderfull food, I would recommend Espetada, Steak, Seafood or any fish in the menu, makes everything close to perfection. This restaurant is worth a visit that, probably, will repeat itself time and time again. For it has been like that since June 2013.

Despite the name, Brig o Tay restaurant also offers portuguese food, from an excellent seafood rise, to cataplana, to amazing espetada (skewered steak). The food is excellent, the location and the view over the Tay amazing. Best of all is the service, extremelly friendly and helpful. I would recommend to all my friends and family.

Went for steak night but extremely disappointed. Asked for medium steak but was more rare.Few soggy chips, hard peas and two underdone soggy onion rings. No salad as advertsed. Food was also cold. Asked for a prosecco and was told had no cold ones . Was given small one off top shelf behind bar but when I opened it it was completely flat and very yellow so I think it must have been on the shelf a long while! Lady opened big bottle which again came from top shelf so was not cold but was bubbly. Can't believe there was no bottles in wine fridge. Sticky toffee pudding was good though. Seeing as there was just one other couple in the restaurant there really was no excuse for steak meal being so poor as kitchen not rushed. Won't be rushing back!!!

Great location on the Old Course. Beautiful modern terrace on the top floor with stunning views across the fairways to the sea. So wanted to like this place but were disappointed. Food was standard golfing fare - steaks and lobster - OK but nothing special . Wine list reasonable for price and choice. What lets the place down is the lack of management oversight. Tables with broken legs, jet lagged golfers asleep in the lobby, incredibly noisy ambience all overseen by a well meaning but overwhelmed serving staff. Not what you expect when paying $400 for a meal for two. Dinner took three and a half hours. We had to track down staff to order wine, coffee and get the check. Could be a good dining alternative to the Old Course Hotel but its let down badly by the service. Seems its owned by one of those absentee investment companies and it shows .

Had afternoon Tea today(Sunday). The view is stunning, overlooking the golf course and the Forth. We had to wait around 10 minutes and received 4 types of sandwiches, a plain scone and fruit scone and a variety of cakes. The scones were some of the best I’ve ever had- warm from the oven, the cakes were light. We received a bottle of water and large pot of tea but had to ask for glasses. The toilets were a bit more dated than the restaurant but clean

When the weather turns cold, shops closed, you don’t want a restaurant, just a cuppa, Alexander and George will make you welcome. Enticed by the chips! Feel much better now. Thanks guys!

Arranged to meet friends here for a lunch and a catch up. This is a very popular visit with very pleasant surroundings through a very large conservatory contributing to a very well lit area. There are a number of tables within the conservatory and your extensive menu is on the table. There are hot and cold food choices ordered at the server and brought to your table. We opted for chicken and rice soup and tomato and vegetable soup. To accompany the soup we ordered cheese and onion toasties and cheese and ham. We had carrot cake put aside for later that was the last of it. The chicken soup had a distinct homemade stock flavour with generous amounts of chicken through the rice and veg. The toasties came with crisps and side salad and coleslaw on the side. They were very well cooked with a generous filling. Finally the piece de resistance the home baking carrot cake came bursting with flavour very moist and topped with a very sweet icing. Would not hesitate to recommend to anyone and will definitely be back.
