Borrowdale Gates Hotel Restaurant in Allerdale

We stayed here for two nights in April and had an amazing stay. The room was perfectly appointed and had all the amenities needed. It was a very comfortable bed. The food was amazing ! Excellent!!! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a beautiful hotel to stay in the Lake District. The staff are very attentive, and will be there for anything you may need. This hotel exudes five star luxury.

Stayed here for 5 nights over Easter and was blown away with the service received. Usually as a vegan you feel a nuisance but the staff, and particularly Marilyn, made our stay so special. The food was lovely and they even changed the vegan menu for us half way through our stay so we didn't get bored!! This is a very special place and I would not hesitate to stay again!

Wonderful stay, dinning experience was delightful and delicious myself and my partner enjoyed our evening and we will return through the summer. Well worth the money paid.

Booked here for dinner during our stay at the hotel and glad we did. Wow, beautifully layed out tables and a view over the green fields. Greeted by friendly restaurant staff and were really looked after throughout the whole dining experience, and an experience it was. Appetisers, breads, followed by 3 courses of some of the nicest food we've had in a while. Our kids thought this experience was great and want to do it more when we get home.

Great limited wine selection (not cheap though) in an elegant setting with great views. Couldn't see much for vegans on the menu.

Beautiful hotel with amazing, caring team making your experience one to remember. Travelling with our little one, the family room we stayed in was excellent. Food a little pricey but really good quality - perhaps good to have a more informal option for families or walkers. The team were extremely friendly and helpful. We loved the garden and location for walks.

If you want to get away from it all, have some peace and quiet while enjoying fantastic scenery and food this is the place for you. You will be spoilt while relaxing here with beautiful stylish rooms, amazing views, first class service and food. What an absolute treat for my birthday! Thank you.

Recently stayed at this lovely location. We arrived late in the night due to issues leaving London and they were extremely friendly and even let us have a meal even though it was late and we were not in the correct attire. This was most welcome. Staff extremely friendly and make you feel welcome throughout. The food was simply breathtaking, some of the best I’ve eaten. The rooms were lovey and the views were simply magical. This place was perfect for a brilliant weekend away.

We have just returned from our fifth visit this year to this beautiful hotel.Two nights stress free comfort in our favourite room Millican Dalton. Cheerful enthusiastic welcome from the vivacious recieptionist . Front of house staff and restaurant staff. Usually the hight light of our stay has been the 5* dinners - sadly this was not the case on this visit. The first evening we were presented with what was described as cannon of lamb - a high end cut of meat which I serve regullarly at home supper parties. In this case it was three slim thin slithers of tasteless lamb on a bed of spinach followed by a small glass of panna cotta - at most three spoonfuls. I had to check that I was paying £58 for this meal. In a restaurant I would have sent it back and left with out paying The second night faired no better. with the main course - mine a fillet of sea bream served on a mirpoix and my partner Steakpie which looked like a Weatherspoon steak day special. As always the breakfasts were oustanding. We look forward to our visit in March which will influence any further visits

Just returned from a wonderful three night break at this superb hotel. All the staff are a real credit to the hotel management. Special mention goes to Jake the maitre de, Kamil behind the bar. Sheer Perfection! My friend & I have just had THE most wonderful 3 night break. From the moment we checked in until we were waved goodbye it filled us with joy. Each & every member of staff we met had a relaxed, friendly & helpful approach, dining was a gastronomic experience. Wow! Two bedraggled walkers arrived yesterday afternoon soaking wet at 3.30pm. The staff welcomed us sincerely and sent us through to meet Kamil in the bar by a roaring fire. He was so friendly and welcoming, and even hung up our coats to dry before making us cocktails to enjoy by the fire. We were so impressed and didn't feel we were imposing at all despite not having a room or a meal booked at the hotel. As a result we will definitely return as guests sometime soon for more of your wonderful hospitality. Thank you Kamil!!

Wonderful traditional hotel with a very relaxing seating area & lovely views - red squirrels running around in the grounds. Great place to stop for coffee, snacks or lunch, with very friendly staff who welcome you.

My husband and I were given a voucher for a hotel stay as a gift from our daughter. We chose a night's stay here with a 3 course dinner and breakfast included. We chose the hotel primarily for its peaceful location and, having been ill in the run up to the stay, I was really looking forward to a relaxing afternoon and some much needed rest. The hotel is in a stunning location and the downstairs guest areas are beautifully decorated, making the most of the views through the large windows. We received a great, friendly welcome from the member of staff on reception and went up to our room. The room itself was quite spacious with a four poster bed and sitting area. The bathroom was quite large too, however the shower cubicle was quite mouldy in some areas and there were quite a few dead wasps on the floor under the window. Otherwise it was fine. The biggest issue, however, was the noise. The hotel is undergoing some building work which we were not informed of - when we booked, in the run up to the stay or even when we checked in. The noise in our room was unbearable. Loud constant banging, drilling which made the whole room vibrate and everything rattle, whistling/shouting from the builders. We called down to reception and asked to be moved to another room but were told there were none available and no other solution offered. We asked what time the builders would be finished and were told 4.30. It only being 3pm, the only way we could get away from the noise was to sit in the hotel lounge until the builders finished at after 5pm. Not the restful, peaceful afternoon I had hoped for or needed. Dinner in the evening was fantastic - superb food, drink and service. We sat in the bar afterwards with a drink and played one of the games we found. Breakfast the next morning was great with a good choice available and great service again. It was lovely to sit and watch all the wild birds on the feeders in the garden and take in the view. The building noise started again not long after 9am. We decided to check out straight after breakfast as we just couldn't bear to be in the room with the noise - again, not the relaxing morning I had so looked forward to. We mentioned it again on checkout and whilst the member of staff was very apologetic, they did nothing to try to rectify it - no offer of any reduction on what we'd paid or similar. We pointed out that we'd picked the hotel specifically for the quiet location and that our stay had been spoilt by the noise, and that if we'd been made aware of disruption/noise before our stay that we probably would have cancelled our booking and stayed somewhere else. On this basis, we wouldn't stay here again as we feel that the service provided to customers who were obviously unhappy was not really good enough and we didn't receive the stay we were expecting.

Beautiful hotel with a fantastic restaurant. Perfect location for the Lake District.

Popped in for a bite to eat but unfortunately they were busy with hotel guests and not taking walk ins. We were however welcomed in for a drink where we were served by the very polite and professional Andrew who is a credit to your team. Hopefully we'll be able to stop by for some food before our holiday ends.

Stayed here for 2 nights on DBnB basis. We had stayed here before and were hoping it was going to be as good as we remembered. It was. The room was very spacious and comfortable with a dual aspect making the most of the magnificent views. All of our meals were delicious, no course disappointed. Even though we eat out quite a lot we were still enjoying new experiences. The restaurant has a lovely relaxing atmosphere with spectacular scenery manned by friendly efficient staff. A luxurious experience at reasonable prices.

We ate two evening meals in the restaurant. The food was excellent; inspired and consistent over all courses. Service is good and the views from the comfortable dining room over the Borrowdale countryside vey pleasing. The restaurant has the two AA Rosette rating and we consider it to be at the top end of that standard.

The food is locally sourced and of great quality. The chef uses imaginative and complimentary combinations to produce unexpected and exciting tastes while never drowning the main ingredient. He should probably have a michelin star.

Ate here three nights during our stay. High quality meals using local products. Delicious lamb dishes with wonderful view of the Borrowdale valley.

Beautiful views from all windows and set in a wonderful central location. The rooms were very comfortable. We spent 4 nights with our family including grandchildren and they all loved it too. The service was perfect along with the outstanding dinners and fabulous menu. We can't wait to return.

Popped in for lunch when travelling in the area. Despite not booking and staff advising us they were short on chefs they still accommodated us. Had the ploughman's lunch which was really nice! Place looked lovely too. Thank you

My wife and enjoyed a 3 night stay with friends. We had a superior room.but sadly no king sized bed and hence my reason for not giving a 5 star rating. However what is certain you will not be disappointed. We have already rebooked

Lovely hotel nestled in Grange in the Borrowdale Valley. Friendly, attentive staff and brilliant food.

The food at the restaurant for breakfast and dinner has been sublime the servers and staff have been beyond amazing. The view from the rooms have been breathtaking and while some parts of the room could do with some updating it doesn't detract from how wonderful a stay it's been.

Just back home from a fantastic few days at Borrowdale Gates. The hotel, location & all of the staff were exceptional! The chef and the kitchen team prepare just the best food which is amongst the best I’ve ever had. Can’t wait to book and be back soon.

A lovely hotel with a comfortable room and great food and service. Everyone went out of their way to make us feel welcome and as if we were staying in a warm and friendly home rather than a hotel. The location is also great if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and has a number of walking options nearby.

Very nice place, visited with 2 friends whilst hiking the cumbria way we eventually got something to drink but had to sit outside around the back (we weren't posh enough) 😉 still nice of them to sit us somewhere for a drink and a well earned rest thanks guys.

Beautiful old hotel building in a lovely tranquil setting. Our bedroom was modern and well appointed with amazing view of the fells. Food was good and considering all the staffing problems caused by covid etc service was brilliant.

The menu and food is excellent but the surroundings are rather dated. The staff are very attentive and welcoming.

Wonderful service by very helpful & kind staff despite the current staffing problems. Delicious meals with lots of choice using locally sourced food where possible. Very comfortable, well appointed rooms. All round we had a delightful stay for our first break following the easing of coving restrictions. We felt safe & everyone was still being cautious. We will certainly be going back.

The food was absolutely exceptional, we thoroughly enjoyed our evening meals during our stay. The breakfast & service was great too. The hotel is in a wonderful position (in Grange) and the outdoors awaits for walking, running and alike. Our accommodation was adequate and to a good standard but not as remarkable as the food (which is the reason I felt compelled to write a review)!

A quiet backwater in Grange in Borrowdale. Beautiful scenery and walks from the door. The food is fantastic. Return from a walk and sit by the log fire with coffee and homemade biscuits.

Always delicious and creatively presented. Only disappointment was the turbot, which was a very tiny portion (like a starter) swamped in leeks and cauliflower. The handsome fillet of Witch Sole made up for it a few nights later.

The food here is amazing..... And the fish is as fresh as it comes Outstanding...... Couldn't recommend enough 👌

We sat outside at the Borrowdale for lunch. Incredible food and the staff were lovely. The view could not be beaten!

Gorgeous rooms and views and beautifully presented food

Dining in the restaurant was a fine dining, relaxing and enjoyable experience. We did not wish to eat anywhere else and felt very safe and comfortable during these present times and restrictions.

We arrived at the Borrowdale Gates Hotel for drinks and food in the garden but did not stay. Explained to the receptionist we wanted to sit outside and order drinks and food. The staff member quite rightly explained the policy of masks must be worn in the building and policy of track and trace. We asked if one of us could come in to order drinks as we didn't all have masks. The staff member then proceeded to walk around to her back office and belittle us while we could easily hear her. We are sorry that we did not all have masks but we had not all planned to come down to support a local businesss it was an afterthought. We had wondered why the hotel was completely empty but considering the rudeness of the staff I can see why. I will add that right after we visited another 4 star hotel and had a lovely afternoon.

Had a lovely stay as a birthday treat. The Wainwright room is a lovely light room with dual aspect. Balcony views of Castle crag. Very peaceful. Ideal for a walk by the lake to Keswick. Had a evening meal at the hotel restaurant, the food wash delicious, not cheap but very nice.

A really good menu and really good execution all in a fantastic dining room in a wonderful hotel . what could be better ?

We ate in the restaurant twice a day during our one week stay there and it was always excellent. Many of the dishes had a traditional English basis but with an imaginative twist. The restaurant is most certainly open to non-residents.

I visited the bar in this hotel on Friday and Saturday afternoons. The views and atmosphere was very pleasant. The bar tenders were both helpful and polite. I will visit again when I'm in the area.

We ate here a few times. Plus loved coming in for a drink. Food was great.

El almuerzo del domingo en las puertas de Borrowdale se ha convertido en una tradición cuando volvemos de vacaciones al Reino Unido y nos convenceremos de no volver a comer allí en nuestra próxima visita.El entorno es hermoso, incluso en un día frío y ventoso de diciembre. Las bebidas antes del almuerzo en el salón con vistas al campo de Cumbria mientras se estudia el maravilloso menú es una muy buena manera de comenzar la experiencia del almuerzo.Desde el momento en que llegamos hasta que nos fuimos, todo el personal fue muy muy bueno, muy profesional y muy amable. Nada era demasiado problema y el servicio de almuerzo fue perfecto.La decisión más difícil del día es elegir del menú, pero lo que se elija, dudo que decepcione. Teníamos cuatro entrantes, platos principales y dulces diferentes y al final de cada curso, ¡había cuatro platos vacíos y cuatro clientes muy satisfechos y gratamente llenos! Toda la comida está increíblemente bien presentada tanto que, particularmente con los dulces, casi parecía una pena molestar a la comida bellamente arreglada. . . pero lo hicimos!Después de la comida, se puede tomar café en el salón y la combinación de un excelente almuerzo y sillas cómodas hace que quedarse dormido sea bastante difícil de evitar.No podemos recomendar las puertas de Borrowdale lo suficiente y en nuestra próxima visita al Reino Unido, reservar una mesa será una prioridad.Gracias a todos por una experiencia gastronómica memorable. . . de nuevo.

The dinners were uniformly wonderful. The food is well prepared, beautifully presented and offered ample variety. The desserts were amazing!

Only popped in for coffee. Very impressed by the service. The views, inevitably, are fantastic.

We ended up here after a slightly traumatic afternoon getting lost on Maiden Moor and High Spy, where we’d had to improvise a path down after rivers from recent rainfall prevented us from accessing the usual routes. I’d suffered a painful twist to my knee, so we were greatly relieved to find this hotel when we finally descended safely into the valley. We were served by an extremely friendly staff member who insisted on fetching an ice pack for my injured knee, and provided newspaper on which I could rest my foot propped up on a table. Having the chance to rest, along with a heartwarming lunch of soup and a toasted sandwich, we felt ready to begin the walk back to our car back near Cat Bells. We felt the friendly and concerned service we had at this hotel was really worth mentioning in a review!
