Lovely Hotel, made extremely welcome by Diane. Little kitchen available to use and bread and milk to make complementary toast tea and cereals. Room clean and kettle with refreshments. Hotel attached to a fabulous bar/restaurant ‘Knowledge’ where we had beautiful meal and drinks. The hotel is within walking distance to Sunderland centre with shops and The Stadium of Light for the football. Our second stay, and definitely not our last ❤️

This food is unreal. It’s called volare now. The food is incredibly filling and cheap. We have ate in and have ordered for takeway during lockdown but always have collected. Collection we have found takes 45mins but it’s piping hot. I always order king prawns and we end up getting a few dishes to try. Honestly I can’t recommend this place enough When I have ate in, I’ve found it empty but I think that’s because sambucca is nearby and therefore there isn’t an atmosphere but that’s a shame because the food is amazing.

Big thank you to Volare at the Boars Head for feeding 9 of my family last night! No one had any complaints what so ever! Sunday lunch today was amazing! I contacted them in advance as I have an intolerance to dairy and soya. I’ve not had Sunday lunch out for a while because there is usually very little I could have. Today I got the works and it tasted amazing!! The atmosphere was lovely and relaxed and my family and I got some well deserved catch up time. I can’t recommend highly enough. The only thing I would say is I wish I hadn’t got a starter as I couldn’t finish my main Sunday dinner. But it was all delicious! Looking forward to going again some time.

Visited as two couples. Place is really well presented with some fantastic views of the river wear. Fantastic service from being shown to the table. Great food really tasty with all four of us enjoying every part of the meal. From bruschetta, goats cheese, skins and prawns to start. With some brill mains, ravioli with lobster stuffing, steak, chicken was all lovely. Then to round off with some extra special deserts, the cheese cake salted caramel was best eaten. Such a great restaurant and price was great three courses and numerous drinks for four at roughly 30 quid a head. Fantastic value. Would recommend everyone to book Volare at the Boars head.

My daughter and I went for lunch in the newly managed restaurant Volare at the Boars Head today. Food was extremely cheap (happy hour) and the views really are something else. I’ve had to bring my garlic bread home as it was huge and so tasty I couldn’t leave it! We both got a pasta dish, I asked for mine extra spicy and they certainly delivered on their promise. We stayed here on Saturday 25th May 2019 as was close by for a wedding we were attending on the night time. We had booked to stay here and decided to have a bite to eat. The restaurant was quiet and we sat in the conservatory overlooking the river. Hubby ordered the parmo chicken with salad and chips and I had the sirloin steak. Both meals were £15. Sooo cheap. The chef had spoke to us and said the parmo was a big meal and was to be freshly prepared. She wasn’t wrong. It was huge and hubby was well chuffed. My steak was amazing, served with fresh onion rings, mushrooms and chips with salad. We later checked into our room which was immaculate and later got a free bottle of prosecco delivered with compliments from the house. The staff couldn’t do enough for you and were so friendly. Upstairs there is a separate kitchen to help yourself to nibbles, biscuits, fresh bread with tea/coffee facilities and a washing machine. Even had a private outdoor terrace to drink your cuppa on. Couldn’t fault the price we paid and the food again was just unreal and anywhere else in more upmarket restaurants would have paid 3 x more money for smaller portions. 5 minutes walk from the exchange buildings . Well done everyone especially the lovely lady behind the bar, sorry never got your name and the owner who personally introduced himself and made us feel so welcome.

We chose to have lunch here as it was a sunny day and they have a lovely decking area with views over the river. I had checked reviews beforehand as I love home cooked chips and several people mentioned the tasty chips. And therein lies the disappointment. The menu stated home cooked chips but we were served tasteless frozen ones. To be fair our friends enjoyed their meals (pork chops and sea bass - no chips but very tasty home made mash). I mentioned my disappointment to the waitress who said they were debating about what sort of chips to serve. Well to me it's a no brainer. There are lots of rival pubs now in Sunderland serving tasty home cooked food and the Boar's head needs to review it's food offerings to keep up with its competitors.

The Boars Head is a very old pub in what was once a very rough part of Sunderland - the old East End. It is much changed now, and this boutique hotel offers clean and comfortable rooms, good beers and excellent food (with the best chips I've had in years), with a superb view over the River Wear. We stayed two nights, and will go stay again if we ever go back to Sunderland.

First visit to this wonderful bistro which sits high above the River Wear and with fabulous views across the river. Beer selection limited but the meals are inexpensive and tasty. The pizza was the largest we have ever had but the poor quality knives and forks had to work hard to cut through the base. The Hunters chicken was very good. The staff were friendly and efficient l. I will certainly be back. Only drawback is that the restaurant is not open on an evening. Don't bother us but may affect others. A first class venue.

Table was booked for 1pm. Starters took 40 minutes to arrive and were tiny. Main courses arrived after 1hr 10mins. My 6 year old didn’t have a starter so had waited well over an hour to eat anything. No drinks (after the ones we bought when we arrived) were offered by any of the staff. In fact no one said anything about anything. The most impressive part was that they had managed to burn carrots, parsnips, red cabbage and Yorkshire puddings. We asked for the bill as the desert was taking ages (obviously). The Bill came and dessert was listed. The staff were good enough to remove the desert we hadn’t had, which was a nice touch. They did however charge for everything else. Almost impresively poor.

While we were in the lovely ladies behind the bar out on old footage of sunderland which mum loved. The food is all cooked to order so piping hot and a really good choice to pick from including some old fashioned dishes. If I had one criticism it would be that the dining area was cold, but that would be it... it's a nice friendly pub with yummy food and cheap at that.

Very overrated, poor dry over cooked food and high prices. This place it's self is very tacky with print outs from a home printer on the wall and a painting of a old local on the wall. Avoid the front area as was Smokey due to burnt pizza near the pizza oven. Even the drive up there should of put me off as it's in a run down. Glass all over the car park so I had to park down the street, also black bin bags stacked up and litter scattered, surprised there was no robents.

Visited here with family and friends on Bank Holiday Saturday. We booked pretty much last minute but they were able to accommodate us and book us a table at the time we wanted. Parking wasn't an issue and managed to get parked right outside, first impressions the pub is a little dated and could do an update and some finishing touches, the conservatory was nice but could have done with some updating and nicer décor. The staff were very friendly and polite, the waitress was a young girl and very polite and friendly. There was 6 of us in total, all meals were nice however 2 weren't as hot as they should have been, we were visiting somewhere else prior to this and therefore didn't have much time. They did offer us a free dessert or a free drink but again as we were limited with time we turned it down. They did kindly reduce one of the cost of the pies of the bill. I can get a little noisy however it was bank holiday, maybe some curtains in the conservatory would soften the echo a little. The terrace outside is lovely and looks out right over the Bridge and river, right over to the glass centre and down to the docks. Overall nice pub for pub grub, would recommend the Chicken Kiev which seemed home made and full of flavour and the home made chips were cooked perfect. Would recommend and return. The outside terrace would be lovely for drinks outside on a summers evening.

We eventually asked the waitress how much longer and she said it wouldn't be long. It was. I ordered my dessert with my main to save time, but it didn't make any difference. After about half an hour of waiting, we decided not to bother with the dessert, and asked for it to be taken off our bill. My Husband and I along with our two kids visited the Boar’s head today. My husband wanted to eat from the normal menu as we have been before and the food was lovely however they only had the Sunday lunch menu on. I’m glad they did though as the dinner was absolutely beautiful. I ordered potato skins to start and beef dinner, my husband had homemade tomato soup and the all year round Christmas dinner. We didn’t wait very long for our starters at all and they brought my daughters dinner out with our starters. The potato skins were lovely and crispy and the homemade soup was beautiful. It was accompanied with a warm toasted ciabatta bun which was a lovely added extra. Our mains came and they were lovely and hot - just how I like them. The beef melted in your mouth and not a big of fat on, and there was a great choice of vegetables. Perfect portion sizes too. One course for £8.95 or two for £11.95. Well worth the money. It was all washed down with a lovely pint of Estella! Will definitely be back.

Had the Xmas lunch on Saturday with family. The choice was excellent ,the food well cooked ,well presented and delicious Nothing is too much trouble for the staff, The prices are very fair for the quality of the food , we had drinks before and after which were also very reasonably priced. Altogether a fantastic experience , we will be going back and recommend you do give it a try . With so few decent places to eat ,we need to promote the good ones and keep them open .

Had dinner here last Saturday with relations. The food was superb, the service excellent and the staff polite and efficient. The price is very reasonable SO what's not to like, plus you have great views over the river. (Only it was dark)

What panoramic views from the Boar's Head Bistro. . . along the river, over the river to the National Glass Centre, and down the river to the sea.

Went here today for Sunday lunch as had called in the month before for a drink and when looking at the food coming out the kitchen I knew I had to try it. The Boars Head is one of the few places that do Sunday lunches up to late afternoon. This suited us and going with our 8 year old grandson we decided on the Sunday platter which did not disappoint . It would have easily served 4 grown ups . We decided to eat it rather than climb it. Lol. All in all the meal was amazing , price was very reasonable and we all can't wait until next Sunday . We have booked the conservatory so we can take in the lovely views of the river

Heard good rumours about this place and they were not wrong. The kitchen had been turned off for the night and the manager agreed to re-open just to serve us. The food was incredible we had potatoe skins and parmo, probably the best we have had. The staff are really friendly and made us feel at home from walking in. We will definately be returning and will recommend this place to friends and family. Thanks, see you again soon.

Found this little place when looking for food before cinema and I can honestly say I’ve never felt more welcome! The manageress welcomed us and we were told that they had just stopped serving food but after speaking with the chef they turned everything back on for us! Pints poured perfectly, potato skins with the best chilli jam and the manageress recommended jalapeño parmo and never in my life have I tasted a parmo as good as this place. Cleanliness of the place was absolutely spot on, the friendliness was even more perfect. Definitely recommend to everyone. Thanks again for an unforgettable service and meal ❤️

Having visited for the opening of the Bistro we were more than impressed by the new owners endeavours to create an atmosphere which reflects not only an awareness of it's historic significance, but an amazing attention to detail. Surrounded by old photographs, videos and documents, the bistro appears to have an excellent range of meals and beverages. The covered decking area overlooks the river, providing superb views up and down stream and towards the National Glass Centre opposite. We noticed that they intend to include local talks and, apparently, music evenings. A friendly and helpful staff create a relaxing, warm atmosphere. We'll certainly make it a 'local' in future.

First off let me say that the location of this place has special meaning to me as I was born over the road and my dad was a docker and this was his local. Having been unused for years The Boars Head has now reopened with a very tasteful refurbishment. The decor and ‘theme’ is very respectful of the local history and the view is the best in Sunderland. Most importantly the food was amazing! I had the fish and chips- fish was so fresh and the chips were perfect, I’m not a fan of mushy peas but I gobbled them up too. My partner had the steak and ale pie which she said was the best she’d ever had - huge chunks of tender steak that melt in your mouth and gravy you could drink on its own. We shared a sticky toffee pudding which was so moorish. The beer was fantastic also. The service was great. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, even when our little boy smashed a Xmas tree bauble. So sorry. This establishment deserves the success it will no doubt see. When I come back to Sunderland The Boars Head will be seeing me and my family again.

We decided to try this recently refurbished establishment in the heart of the Eastend and we weren't disappointed. Three of us had the small cooked breakfast which was more than enough and at £3.95 was great value, my mother fancied a panini which they were happy to serve even though it was on the lunchtime menu.

Excellent location with off street parking, as you go in the tables are well set out with plenty of room all round, to the rear are views overlooking the River Wear. Outside is an area set aside for summer barbeques. A good selection of wines and spirits, and the menu has plenty of choices. Being near the fish quay the fish and chips are superb, but that does not detract the rest of the menu having good size portions. The staff are very professional and courteous and only to happy to help. You may have to wait a little longer than usual for your order, this is because everything is freshly prepared, but well worth it. The prices are also reasonable.

This is a proper Old Pub - first built 1724 -it has had many names - but the location is absolutely amazing! There is a huge deck overlooking the Port of Sunderland - which when the sailing ships come in 2018 will be a MUST BE pub.

Myself and six friends enjoyed tasty hot meals on Saturday night. It is very clean with good prices and the staff were attentive. We all had different main meals but they all looked delicious. I enjoyed the chicken parmo from the specials board followed by the raspberry and white chocolate cheesecake. I was not disappointed with my choices. The chicken was succulent and very tasty and the cheesecake just melted in your mouth. There are great views of the bridge and across the river. Altogether, a very enjoyable experience and will definitely recommend.

We wanted food, but unfortunately, it was finished. The bar lady came to show us other places we could eat. She was so kind, we decided to stay for a drink or 3! It was quiz night and the pub was busy, but the lady said there was sausage casserole later on. When the quiz had a break, she made sure we got some casserole and it was really good. A fun evening and the locals made us feel very welcome! Highly recommended - especially on quiz night 😊

Attended a party here last night, Terrible service and drinks. The staff were miserable definitely no service with smiles in this place. I do agree with the last review, the staff need customer service training. Gin with a warm bottle of cheap lemonade for my first drink, Then I got a glass of Warm Prosecco (which I was advised by the staff that the party guests were drinking far to quick so can’t chill quick enough)🥴 Then I received a flat dreg from a different kind of Prosecco bottle which I had to send back. Then I noticed each round of the same drinks I was being charged different prices. When questioned I was told I should be lucky that I have been undercharged the previous time🥴 Good job this place is at the bottom end of the town so it was a 1 off visit, I’ll not have to visit again.

Had been to the Sunday Market at South Shields. We decided to go again to Suzies cafe for a coffee. We found a parking space and my husband went to get them I had a hot soup (vegable) and my husband had a coffee. Both really enjoyable. While were.sitting in the car.a car pulled in a disabled bay, no disabled badge.on. They didn't pay. I'm disabled and .always show my badge. Then another car pulls.up ( we were in a norma bayl as no disable.were free when we parked) along beside us, gets out dad,ma m amdchild. They too didn't pay. When we were coming out spotted two traffic wardens - hope 2 cars get a ticket.
