🚇 Catford 🍺 £5.80 Guinness One of the Best Pubs in London. The Blythe Hill Tavern is located in South East London on the border between Catford and Forest Hill. The nearest station is Catford, it’s a ten minute walk to get here. The pub was built in the mid 19th century and started life as The Blythe Hill Hotel. This is three room pub with a public bar on the corner, a saloon to the left and a large room running across the back of the pub. The decor here is outstanding, so much so that it has been Grade II listed by Historic England. The walls are clad in dark wood panelling which originate from the 1920’s. Around the walls are a treasure trove of old signs, posters and mirrors relating to Irish writers, Irish brews and sporting pursuits. Other features include exposed beams, fireplaces that roar in winter, traditional seating and to top in off, a proper pub carpet. At the rear of the pub is a large beer garden that blooms in the summer. The beer lineup was great, there was a decent selection of four revolving cask ales, familiar favourites and of course Guinness. I ordered a pint of St Jame’s Gates finest, my pint was excellent and pleasingly cost less than six quid. There is food available here by way of @vandough pizzas. They serve up 10” pizzas which all cost in and around a tenner. Check their socials for timings. My brother and I arrived bang on opening at met Con the Guv’nor who was warm and welcoming. After ordering our pints we ended up having a great chat with Con about Ireland and London pubs in the 70’s and 80’s and the many characters that ran them. We were also chatting about The Arsenal as we are both fans and visiting Highbury and the pubs around there back in the day, what a lovely fella. The pub hosts Quiz Nights, Live Music, Live Premier League and Rugby. The @blythehilltavern is a Multi award winning pub which is traditional, welcoming, quirky and authentic. This is one of the best pubs I’ve visited, I loved everything about this place and Con the Guv’nor is an absolute diamond. Had a weekend over in crystal palace revisiting my brother and sister in law...its there local great atmosphere great staff and made us feel welcome..

Lovely pub, great pint of Guinness which is left to settle and then topped up. Just like being in Ireland. Good place to watch the football/rugby. Also a nice big beer garden. Never eaten their so don't know about the food.

It's like stepping back in time in this cosy local, a timeless gem with impeccable, pint to your table service.

Fantastic best pint of hop head

Famous for the Guinness, they also have plenty of well kept ales. Cozy in winter and lively in summer. Pizza is available from a van sometimes, but they let you order in as well.

Dark space, tables were dirty and floor wasn't clean. We weren't tempted to stay long. There was a group of old men sitting around with a few pints swearing at each other ~ not a family friendly atmosphere or welcoming to many families.

Probably the best run pub in London - not gastro just a good old fashioned pub.

Brilliant pub, its very highly regarded, for a good reason. Particularly good for GAA matches, since its an Irish pub. Prices are a little too high for my liking, but I like to think it's because they pay their staff well, who are all very competent barstaff.

A rather charming and traditional interior. The bar staff wear white shirts and black ties. They keep their beers in excellent condition and at the time of visit I was lucky enough to try the Harvey's Porter . This pub has certainly gained in popularity over the last few year and it can get very busy. It was quiet on Sunday evening . A no nonsense establishment that is a must visit if you find yourself down that way

Friends of mine have been raving about this lace for years. I was brought up in NW London (Cricklewood/Kilburn)and remember when every pub had an Irish landlord who dressed in shirt and tie and knew every customer's name and served great Guinness. This is a throwback to those days and I can think of no greater compliment. It's great to visit a pub which is just that; not a pretentious gastropub with eye-watering prices, but a place to meet, to talk and to mingle. Long may it remain so.

Ultra decent pub, auld fellas behind the bar serving great Guinness and always has the football on. Trad nights as well. A delight of an establishment.

Can't beat it, incredible atmosphere and service.

A friendly Irish pub with an excellent, well treated selection of real ales. Small dogs are welcome. However, whilst my greyhound counts as a small dog, a very small staffie puppy , I was looking after one weekend, was deemed to be a dangerous dog. So, if you're planning to take Fido along, it would be wise to check whether your dog will be let in. Having said that this is a gem of a pub that I can certainly recommend.

Went to local shop to buy Milk on the spur of the moment on the way home I called in for a Lemonade. Apparently I didn't even know the Wales v Ireland Rugby match was on. Being Welsh, I stayed to watch. Wales lost though! Still I enjoyed myself, someone bought me another Lemonade. Excellent bar staff! Great, friendly local Community Pub! Live Irish band on Thursday's. Get on down and groove!!! 😂 (Reason for LEMONADE) Muslim!!!! I've only ate a Pizza in the Pub Garden before which was a treat 🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕

Cheap pints, smart barkeeps, nothing to dislike, rammed when we went and ended up sat outside which wasn't ideal in January but seems very popular

I am ashamed to say that despite living in SE London for many years I did not know about this pub. It is a lovely old fashioned pub, reasonably priced, great professional bar staff and the best pint of Guinness I have had for ages. My drinking companion sampled a couple of the real ales from the excellent selection on offer and said they were very good. The traditional Irish music session was an unexpected and great bonus. I will definitely be going back.

Have been a few times this year since lock down regulations lifted with friends who are regulars there. Family friendly. Typical old style pub and makes no apologies for it! (Nor should it!) Staff have always been friendly and efficient. Can be busy at times as obviously a very popular pub but can usually get a seat in one of the three bar areas but also nice large outdoor seating area. Good selection of drinks (and crisps!) Great range of ciders - the apple pie one is delicious!

Convenient and well set up for watching the current football championship. Although when darkness falls you stand a good chance of watching a family of young foxes running along and using the corrugated roof of the outside area to get from garden to garden.

Lovely little old school pub run by gentlemen in ties... a rare sight these days! Curteous, polite and top class service. Amazing selection of ciders, popular beers and Irish whiskeys. Beautiful beer garden.

An unusual luxury - a pub that still feels authentic and unpretentious and yet isn't grimey and depressing. The staff are just the right amount of friendly, don't expect amazing beers by today's standards but you will get a lovely pint and a traditional pub atmosphere Nice garden

A real local pub, so rare these days!

On a Thursday they have traditional Irish music! So it's lovely to sit there with your drink and listen. Friendly place too!

Love this place! Con and his staff really make you feel at home in this proper old Irish pub. Great guinness, interesting mix of people who you can stop and chat to, Irish band, Van Dough pizza on a Friday night and a lovely garden with brilliant mosaic and playground to keep the kids occupied. What better way to while away a Sunday afternoon, Friday night... or any other for that matter!

A quaint and lovely atmospheric pub, split into an Irish and English half, large beer garden child friendly. Thursday's they play live folk music so enjoyable. Check it out.

Had a blast at Blythe Hill Tavern. They have lots of different drinks, some of them you can only find at this particular place. Loved that the bartenders have their uniforms - white shirts and ties, it gave so much charm to them. Also, there is a modern jukebox and you may play songs to sing along. It is unfortunate that this pub is not located in the city center, but on the other hand when you come here you find mainly locals which gives you a glimpse to a simple britons life after work. If you have some free time, definitely escape the crowded city center, have a pint at this amazing place and thank me later.

In a world of expensive and insipid gastro pubs, the Blythe offers something pure and wonderful. A great atmosphere, drinks menu and sport calendar. The staff are friendly and professional. Yes, the pub itself is a bit tired, but who cares. The best Guinness in London. Happy to report that they turn the sound on during the sport.

Proper pub with proper beer and service.

Fine range of well kept beer. Smart and attentive bar staff. Three very different rooms and a garden. Huge range of real ciders. Pleasant company and fabulous trad Irish music on a Thursday. All of this adds up to a wonderful public house as they used to be. Somewhere to drink and talk and let the world go by.

From the outside you wouldn't know what a treat this place is. Lots of different ciders. Irish run the traditional way with smartly dressed bar staff. Friendly service. Only thing to note is that earlier on in the day it is absolutely full of families with young children which is a + or - depending on what you're looking for .

No me puedo quejar del servicio, la calidad de la cerveza Guinness, especialmente el y el medio ambiente. Best Irish pub in the UK, hands down

Por desgracia yo vivo del otro lado de Catford, así no bebe a menudo en aquí, pero a veces podíamos bajar si me harto de la Ram/Goose, Cucharas, etc.

El pub está a menudo lleno de niños fuera de control que piensan que es para adultos, para sacar de su camino. A mediados de la semana que va desde 15:00 hasta las 21:00 y gran parte de la semana. Los padres de estos niños realicen todas las conversación en volumen gritar.

Decir nadie. Este es el verdadero problema. Barman en corbatas, gran ale y vino. Música tradicional irlandesa en Jueves y traer en fichas del local chippie ya que no hacer el bien en sí, aunque la pizza viene en un lujoso van Jueves también. Siempre tenemos una copa allí el día de Navidad - el personal es encantador.

Simplemente es el mejor pub en South East London, si no todo de Londres. Orientar la tendencia no ha perjudicado Carvery Roast" de este local local un poco. Siempre tiene excelentes Guinness, una amplia selección de cervezas y real regularmente revisada una actualidad selección de cervezas de artesanías. Las patatas fritas y las tuercas son de alta calidad y la pizza (la masa) van van en un viernes por la noche es una gran adición. The Blythe must have something. I grew up about 400 meters away from the pub and probably first went to the Blythe 45 years ago. In my early 20s the Blythe was the Monday night pub. Looking back the Rutland is now apartments, the Two Brewers and St. Germans have tried and failed as gastro pubs, with name changes. Yet a few weeks ago, on a visit back from Australia there is the Blythe Hill Tavern, not much changed, other that being a little more packed than it used to be. A great pub that has stood the test of time!

As others have said we would all like to have this pub or one very like it within easy distance of home or work. The personality and individuality is apparent very quickly. It is hospitable, friendly, the fabric varies but holds the character together, the ales are well kept, the benign bustle fits well. They seem to have regular live music on a Thursday and unexpected or spontaneous players at other times. Highly recommended as a genuine and welcoming pub to enjoy excellent beer and craic.

We often drink here. V friendly local, proper pub, good selection of food. Beer garden is a real advantage, with large play area for kids. A proper local.

Not many of these gems left in London. The service is always fantastic, the drinks always great, and a great atmosphere for watching sports.

I must have walked past this place a hundred times without looking in. Was invited by friends recently and was very pleasantly surprised.There's a number of rooms, nicely decorated, plus a beer garden that I imagine would be lovely on a sunnier day. A good selection of ales and ciders, plus an excellent pint of Guinness.It's an old-fashioned, snug, local pub in the best sense of those words. The atmosphere was friendly and there was all sorts of people, from families with young children to old fellas watching the sport.As I understand it, they don't cook food, but I think it's more than compensated for by a pleasant atmosphere (and a solid selection of bar snacks.)I'll definitely be coming again.

A lovely proper old fashioned boozer with staff that are actually interested in serving you. Good selection of beers, nice garden, a few old locals, sport on the telly but can be avoided if that's not your thing.They don't do food.
