Three night stay at this hotel. We had a large room on the front but were not bothered by the traffic noise. The room was very comfortable and clean. The decor was outdated but they are apparently in a refurbishment programme. Breakfast was super, plenty on offer and hot food excellent. The young girls that run the front of house were very friendly and helpful, nothing too much trouble. Good value for money.

Just stayed three nights here including breakfast. This hotel is in a perfect position on the edge of town, within a few minutes walk of the main beach. The rooms are comfortable and decorated to a decent standard and the staff are pleasant and helpful. The breakfasts are excellent particularly the eggs Benedict and smokey salmon and scrambled eggs. Can't comment on the evening meals as we were already booked elsewhere. Had an issue with the TV on our first night, which was quickly rectified the following day and an appropriate discount given. Good value for money, would stay again.

Don’t bother - well not in the winter anyway. We were the only people in on this night. Got greeted by ‘have you got a table booked? We haven’t been told about that!’ Diary is checked ‘O yes, well it would have helped if we had been told about that!’ Not exactly welcoming especially as no other diners in at all. Restaurant was quite cold so needed to keep my fleece on whilst eating. Staff all went outside together for a smoke then came back in smelling of smoke. Food was microwaved and very small portions. Want to add a positive but can’t think of one. Won’t be going back.

Four adults and two under 4s.... The kindest thing I can say about the food we had tonight is "the beer was great". Everything all looked pretty much frozen that was then over fried or cooked and then served up greasy or " caramelized" to use a chefy term.

No extra team points for making the dishes look appetising. Fish and chips = a handful of chips chucked on a round white [ school dinner ]plate, the fish was pityfully small in an area where mostly the fish always hangs over both sides of the plate. Sausages and mash [ Mr Pigglywiggly evidently] were ordered without vegetables but with gravy on the side. There appeared before me a plate complete with broccoli and carrots etc . When I requested that I had ordered WITHOUT vegetables, the reply was Didn't hear you. Fish pie was a bit pathetic also. We were all disappointed with the place with such a nice feel to it upon entering, but leaving a bit miffed that we had wasted and evening on some school dinners, when there is so much choice in the area. Come on buck your ideas up please.

Stayed one night and our room was at top of hotel, think the decor was from the 1950,s veryold fashion, not sure where the rooms were that you see on the web site, all the wires were hanging from the television which stood on a tiny shelf, very poor , paid £125 for the room which no way was worth that, e,mailed the hotel twice to tell them how we felt , but no reply back from them , definitely won’t recommend them to anyone else , also the window frames were so rotten that I think they will fall out soon , please don’t ask for room 9 if you stay there ,

We are locals, not tourists and regularly eat at other restaurants in Southwold. We decided to try a place we don’t normally go to and so popped into the Blyth for dinner. We arrived at 6.20pm and ordered two starters at 6.25pm. The barmaid told us there would be a twenty minute wait which we were ok with. Two starters took 35 minutes!! There was one other table of 6-8 people in the restaurant. Our starters were not worth the wait. What was supposed to be breaded Brie was deep fat fried Brie in batter and was seriously underwhelming. How could that take 35 minutes?? We left without ordering main course and went to the Sail Loft instead (even though it was full our meals came in ten minutes and were lovely).

Although a little 'tired' on the outside you will find a very warm and friendly welcome inside. All staff were extremely helpful. The hotel is ideally situated within easy walking distance of either the High Street or The Pier. The rooms are comfortable and perfectly adequate. Stayed the one night and we were warmly welcomed by Debbie. Unfortunately the chef was ill so no evening food available. Breakfast next day was very good but nowadays most places provide fresh fruit in bowls rather than whole. Room was nicely decorated and cosy. Interesting system for hot tap water. Hotel is a short, straight walk into town . No problems parking but I can imagine in summer the roads around get very busy. Will surely visit again. I took my Mum and her sister away for a holiday and stayed at the Blyth Hotel. We used the restaurant on the first night. The food was beautifully presented and very tasty, but it came without vegetables or salad and I felt that it was a cost cutting move and let it down slightly. I did comment to the staf and the chef added a salad to my plate which was much appreciated. I could have ordered a side of salad or vegetables but it would have added another £3.50 to an expensive meal. I felt the same disappointment in the morning at breakfast. I ordered eggs benedict and got egg benedict! Although it clearly states in the menu it is one egg, it again felt stingy. Everywhere else I have eaten eggs benedict it is presented with an egg on each side of the muffin. It's a silly thing, but the quality is so good and the presentation amazing, it just felt as if there was something missing. Don't get me wrong, we loved the meals, but we ate elsewhere the following nights.

We stayed one Friday night. This is our second stay and the hotel has changed hands since we were there last time. Previously, the owner appeared ever present but now the hotel is in the hands of experienced, pleasant staff. The new owners state in the room information that they are gradually refurbishing and it is probably worth asking for a refurbished room although ours was okay and large. The breakfast is good, with sauté potatoes which were unusual. Worth using if you go to Southwold.

This hotel has been getting some mixed reviews on trip advisor. Yes, some of the hotel does need some care and attention, undoubtedly, the management is aware of these points. These things cost money and time. What we experienced was a clean room, dining area, welcoming and friendly service. Food in the evening was a bit pricey for what we had, breakfast was fine. Staff were courteous and very helpful. A lovely break for the weekend.

We spent just one night at this hotel and found it rather poor. The room was very small, very warm, poorly ventilated and noisy if you opened the window. The door lock was very difficult to use.The staff were pleasant enough but would benefit from some training. They are amateurish. We had breakfast and this is perhaps better to avoid. It is a serve yourself arrangement for starters, including pouring your own lukewarm stewed coffee. Why bother to have coffee at all if this is all you can offer? I made my selection of full English with scrambled egg. The mushroom was okay, black pudding alright, but the rest of it was very poor again with lack of attention to detail. The sausage was anaemic and cold, the egg like rubber. The toast was okay after I passed it through the toaster three times, but I had to prepare this myself.I would not choose to visit again to stay, eat or partake of a drink. There is simply lack of care and attention across the board and I do not feel any sense of optimism that things will improve. It really did not feel like a hotel at all. I did not feel looked after and it was a relief to go home.

On our regular annual visits to Southwold, we have seen some ups and downs at the Blyth. We noted that it was under new ownership/management last year and had hoped to see some improvements to the fabric of the building this time but sadly this was not evident. In fact the place looked in even more need of a makeover. The front of the building was a mismatch of battleship grey and a strange red panel - a big contrast to the smart blue and white in former years. Peeling paintwork and a rotten fascia were also noted. The entrance is marred by paint drips on the steps and plastic plants.Ok, these points shouldn't necessarily spoil the dining experience BUT the interior was also in a poor state, it's all in need of a bit of TLC. The furnishings are generally tired and lack any particular style. So - onto the meal. We visited for Sunday lunch which wasn't at all bad but the portion of roast potatoes consisted of just three golf ball sized ones - a very meagre serving. Special mention must be made of the roast beef, Yorkshire pudding and gravy which were all very good. 'No complaints about the sweets either. To sum up - the food wasn't an issue, we didn't return during our two week holiday in Southwold because of the general lack of ambiance - after all, we were on holiday and there are far smarter places in which to dine in Southwold!

Well I have to say this location was the worst place I have ever eaten. Not a single component of the experience was good or even passable. The Manager was aggressive in her manner. What passed for food was appalling. Vegetables were sparse, the broccoli had never seen any means of cooking. Everyone was crammed into a small room. If you were unlucky and seated in the middle. You could not even stand to raise a toast. Let alone try and get to the loo. It is beyond me how it took 2 plus hours to deliver three courses to thirty people. When we asked for bread to go with the whitebait we were told it was an extra. For the small two slices of beef we asked for horseradish. It was supplied with great reluctance. Next time I will visit Fawlty Towers and ask for a Ceasar salad. Say's it all really. I surprised Adnams are prepared to advertise their name at this venue given its their home town.

We are a family of 5 (3 Children ages 8-13) and the minute we walked through the door the staff were so welcoming. We opted to sit in the bar area as less formal and chose our meals from the simple but varied menu (I'm always suspicious of the quality when menus have too much selection!). Meals were lovely - the kids menu is definitely for a kid - I can't remember if it specified age, but I would say if you have hungry ten year olds, the kids meal might be a bit small! It was exactly 12 months since our last visit to the Blyth and we were less than enamoured. However, since our last Holiday in Southwold the Blyth has changed ownership and we were pleased to see a more professional approach to running the business. We tried their roast lunch on our first Sunday in town, there was only one choice - roast beef but it was beautifully cooked and we couldn't fault it. The Yorkshire pudding also got top marks. On the minus side....the portion of roast potatoes was tiny, very mean. The desserts were good - if a touch overpriced for what they were. We were pleased to enjoy much improved coffee this year too.On another evening, we sampled the pizzas. These were fine, but not exceptional. We ordered salads to accompany these which were rather unimaginative and overpriced at £4 each.....even in Southwold! We noticed general improvements are being made to the fabric of the Blyth and it's good to see the Hotel on the "up' once more.

We were very grudgingly given our deposits back (we had booked over a month a ago)It was like being in a cattle truck. No explanation, appology or humility. Awful!

My husband booked a table for brunch for the second sitting on New Year's Day for us and 3 friends. On opening the door to the bar we were confronted with tables full of dirty plates, glasses and bottles. There was food and bits of rubbish on the floor. It obviously hadn't been cleaned properly from the party the night before. We were mortified. There was complete chaos everywhere. There were not enough staff working out front with the landlord working behind the bar. Eventually we found which table we were to sit at only to find that hadn't been cleared either. One of the paying guests eventually started clearing the tables. The buffet was laid out but I had to ask for plates as there were none out. Half way through the brunch the band packed up and left. The landlord did apologise for the chaos but we wont be going back.

The Jazz was good, the brunch was awful. Cold plates, cold food. £20 for 1 sausage, 2 slices of bacon, half a tomato and a semi frozen mushroom. Coffee was cold. The self service buffet had long queues of people trying to toast bread in a toaster that did not work.Shocking.

It is extremely difficult to find anywhere that does a Sunday roast dinner in Southwold, and there are times when one wants one without having to drive. We decided to give the Blyth hotel Sunday lunch a try ( it advertises a Sunday roast served from 12-8). Roast pork and roast beef were on offer so we all decided to have the pork. I specifically asked the waitress whether it was real crackling (ie not the ready-made slightly odd tasting reheated catering stuff that is an abomination) and she assured me it was. The pork arrived after a 45 minute wait. It was like the sky that day : grey and damp. The fat (which should have been crackling but was blubber) was the colour of a pair of dirty trainer socks and had not seen the oven. The meat was just odd - falling apart but looking almost raw. I took one look and sent it back to the kitchen saying it was not 'roast pork' as described and enquiring of the chef how he had actually cooked it to make it look so truly unappealing? The answer came back that it had been boiled overnight in a bag and then roasted off. I repeat, this meat had not seen an oven and was certainly not roasted off. The crackling, as predicted, was bought in and tasted of cardboard. We swapped to beef, which was again very odd. Grilled? Boiled then grilled? Who knows. It was served with a burnt Yorkshire pudding (all 3 were burnt), roast potatoes, and placed upon a pile of parsnip, swede and carrot - all so uniform in shape they either have a perfectionist commis chef or this was catering pack root veg, probably frozen. It was tasteless. The accompanying vegetables were - oh goody - more of the boiled parsnip, swede and carrot. The gravy, well by now you can anticipate what the gravy was going to be like given that no meat had been roasted so no lovely dark meaty gravy. Just a very watery drizzle with bits in - a close relation to washing up water. I really don't like giving negative reviews, but I am afraid the owner of this lovely building should be ashamed of himself. He has the opportunity to fill the restaurant from 12-3 by serving a proper roast dinner, and he should abandon the 12-8 service if he is not prepared to have joints continually roasting all day. The waitresses were both delightful and very polite, but service (for food and drinks) was incredibly slow, even though there were only two tables occupied.

We took advantage of a room, breakfast and dinner deal during or recent stay the Blyth Hotel. The food was excellent. We enjoyed a selection of dishes over our four night stay from both the A La Carte and Bar menus. All dishes were beautifully presented and very, very tasty indeed (loved the 'Trio of Pork' starter). Likewise, breakfast was excellent. The restaurant itself is comfortable, roomy with nice modern tables and chairs, and well decorated. Must also mention the staff - all very friendly and very helpful. I'll say it again - excellent...!!

Had dinner here on Saturday 4th October, service was painfully slow and of poor quality, the table wasn't cleared of empty glasses, sauces left on table, food dropped on floor from our starter with no apology or replacement. One of the starters was described as crispy chilli beef yet it was more like chunks of beef in a chilli casserole without the chilli and certainly not crispy One of the main courses was stone cold, one of the dishes was sirloin steak, part of the steak could not be cut. The meals at not cheap here and is not reflected in the service or quality!

We were staying with relatives about half a mile from here. We parked up, only to be greeted by a sign declaring "Residents Only!".As all nearby roads have double yellow lines, we took a chance and parked in the empty car park.Next to the overgrown trees, belonging to the neighbour's house declaring: "Birds nesting here. So go to the hotel if you want wipes for your windscreen!"Hardly welcoming!

Having been regular visitors to the Blyth on our annual holidays in Southwold, we found the place to be lacking in any kind of enthusiasm this year. We were told that the Business is for sale, if that is true then it may explain the general lack of interest which we found during our visit. We were "treated" to the spectacle of the owner(?) being involved in a VERY heated vocal exchange with a customer whilst waiting for our meal to arrive, the bar staff seemed unconcerned by this and local people at our neighbouring table remarked that there was often something "odd" going on here! The next surreal event came via the piped music in the bar which played some nice Christmas songs for us to listen to on this hot August evening! None of the staff seemed to notice ( or maybe just didn't care) we had no complaints about the food BUT the coffee was just dreadful, really bad. They had two attempt to get our bill right and still undercharged me.........new enthusiasm badly needed at this hotel.

Fantastic Lunch with 18 friends. We pre - ordered to help us and the Hotel. Brilliant food and service. Children's Fish fingers were the best children's meal I have ever seen , proper fish in batter, all 3 children ate everything on their plates. All the meals were fantastic. All prices were typical Southwold prices. Highly recommend this Hotel to eat and stay. Also it is much quieter than the other pubs in Southwold so you do not have to fight for a seat.

I think when you are treated badly by the staff of arrival, one should turn around and go elsewhere. We arrived at the reception desk on spec and asked if they had a table for two, at the time there was a party of 12 and about 3 to 4 other couples. The staff member advised us that there was a table for two in the bar, fine but we were given directions to the table as the staff member could not be bothered to show us to the table. We sat down and was given a menu.Unfortunately there was some strong glare from the sun at our table and we asked if the blind could be pulled this was done but this was begrudgingly done.We viewed the menu and selected our meals then we waited and waited for our order to be taken finally I went up to the bar to order. The staff member told us that because of the large party of 12 that there would be a delay with our order, I asked how long and was advised about 10 minutes, that was fine. What I did not realize it was 10 minutes plus another 35. So from the time of entry to the meal being presented took a total of 1 hour. The staff could clearly see that we were becoming fidgety as the time rolled on but ignored us.I would say that the staff member with the spotted head band was friendly as for the other two they need some help with there future careers, they are not well suited to customer service. I say this as our plates were cleared I was asked if the meals were fine, I pointed out the the chicken appeared pink, the staff member looked shocked and said that she would check with the chef,I'm still waiting! I cannot understand why people go into front of house roles when they clearly have no customer focused skills. So if you like a long wait and your chicken pink this is the place for you.

A group of us enjoyed a lovely, leisurely lunch here yesterday. We were warmly welcomed by the manager who was both attentive and amusing as he took our order while we enjoyed a drink in the lounge. Even though our party had a couple of special dietary requirements, these were accommodated very willingly by tweaks to the existing menu. The food was delicious and beautifully presented and we were able to enjoy a very sociable 'catch-up' with friends without being hurried. We especially enjoyed finishing our meal with coffee and delicious home made truffles, perfect for that end-of-meal sweet 'fix'! We will definitely be making a return visit.

We recently stayed at the Blyth for 1 night with our 15 month old boy. After reading mixed reviews my expectations were low, however the hotel surpassed my expectations. The staff were all very helpful, and Richard was very welcoming. We ate in the restaurant at night and the food was excellent. Yes, some of the decor is a little tired in the rooms, but it is clean and welcoming which is what I wanted. If you're expecting 5 star luxury, you'll be disappointed. If you want a cute seaside hotel with a bit of charm, then stay there. It's about a 5-10 minute walk to the pier, so location is great. First time to southwold, and would thoroughly recommend to all.

It didn't bode well when we arrived to find a queue at the bar and a trainee member of staff (who looked about 12) trying to cope unsupervised. The restaurant was also virtually empty (one couple eating who left shortly after we arrived, from then on we dined alone). We asked for the wine list but were pointed towards a blackboard with three reds and three whites which may have been sufficient in the 1970s but doesn't cut the mustard now.The starters were ok but the problems really started with the mains. We both ordered the steak (a safe choice or so we thought). One steak was just ok but the other was very fatty and virtually inedible. The rest of the dish consisted of oven chips, a mushroom, grilled tomato and deep fried onion rings. The steaks had an indescribable tasteless gloop on them (supposed to be peppercorn sauce). They expect £17 for this. After wrestling with the fatty steak for a while the waitress came over and we complained. She offered to replace the steak but we had shared the better one and couldn't be bothered with the wait for another to be cooked. We asked to see the dessert menu when we had finished our wine but 15 minutes after finishing still no sign of anyone so we pulled our coats on and went to pay. We expected a significant discount on the inedible steak but were offered £3 off. We refused to pay and after a brief exchange of views left having knocked another tenner off with an offer for them to ring us if they didn't like it. Needless to say no-one has...Southwold has several excellent restaurants and, already suffering from a poor location, the Blyth needs to up its game considerably if it wants to attract non-residents.(We ate twice at the Blyth in September 2012 and it was very good; what has changed????)

WE visit Southwold 3 or 4 times a year and thought on this visit we would try the Blyth. We walked in at 13:30 on a Saturday afternoon and should have taken more notice that the restaurant was empty and only 2 people in the bar. The Lunch meny had not been printed!! We waited for that and although not a great selection we thought we would try it. I had a "Singapore Noodles" which was spicy with lots of prawnsm shrimps a bit of sauce and some other meat which seemed to be pork and duck, that was fine. My wife had a chicken dish which seemed quite fancy on the menu but was just a roast quarter of chicken with a side salad and some garlic sauce, she did have new potatoes rather than the chips offered. The service was not really professional, friendly but not what one expects at these prices, around the bar area they have many "awards" they have won but this must have been in a different time and under different management. We did not bother with dessert so half of Broadside, (The Ghost Ship she brought to the table was off, two small bottles of fizzy water, bread with dipping oil/balsamic a small glass of tempranillo and the mains as described.£37!!The competition is hot in Southwold, I predict this place won't survive with it's current management it's slap dash and disorganised. Shame as Southwold could do with another keen restaurant to keep some of the others who seem to get away with charing "London" prices on their toes

As soon as we walked through the door we should have known it was going to be a poor night and a complete let down! We had booked our table of 5 guests ten days before, when we were only given one available timeslot, as the Blyth had stated they were otherwise fully booked that night. When we arrived, there was no record of our reservation. The staff discussed this amongst themselves and I'm afraid that we were made to feel like an inconvenience. Whilst waiting, we were given what looked to be a very nice menu. Sadly the service did not live up to the menu. After a few minutes of what we thought was the staff rearranging the seating plan to accommodate us, we were seated in the empty restaurant (ok, perhaps all the bookings were yet to arrive?!....)All of the starters were superb, although the last of the five dishes were delivered a few minutes later than the others as both members of staff returned to work behind the bar. The mains were good, but not of the same high quality as the starters and the steak was a little chewy and did not appear to be of good quality. Only a few other couples were seated whilst we ate, and each table appeared to have issues with staff or their meals. One couple actually walked out before eating anything. Another table returned a meal and asked for another dish instead. This same couple then had words with the Manager. It appeared that the Manager then stormed off and slammed the door behind him - we didn't see him again after that.By the time we left, just after 8pm, only four other couples had been seated in the restaurant the whole time, which left us confused as to the limited timing we were offered upon booking and the faces that we pulled when we arrived and they had no note of our booking. A real shame - the first time we've eaten here and we were all looking forward to it. Poor service ruined an otherwise good meal.

Four of us had dinner in the hotel on Saturday 19th April (Easter Saturday).Having eaten there before, but not for some time, we were disaapointed at not only the deline in the quality of the food, but also the quantity. The starters were nondescript. The portion sizes of the main courses were that of a starter, and the food was not great. The pork belly was tasteless and accompanied by very little else. The other mains were of a similar quaity. We do not intend to return, as there are lots of other places to eat in Southwold.

We visited The Crown for a midweek lunch. We had our dog with us so didn’t want the formal dining room. The tables at the front were busy so we found a cosy snug at the back which was almost empty. We had a catch of the day fish and chips, complete with excellent crunchy chips and a smoked fish platter, also very nice. As expected, the full range of Adnams beers were available and in excellent condition. However, what we must really commend The Crown on was the attentive staff. Nothing was too much trouble for them. For example, I asked the barman if there was any water bowls for dogs outside? No need to go outside he replied and dropped what he was doing and brought one to our table. We will definitely return when we ext visit Southwold.

6 of us dropped in for a drink after the cinema at 22.05 today . Totally deserted except for one customer at the bar. Waited over 5 minutes before the customer offered to find the bar staff. Empty glasses on bar and tables so obviously work to do but no staff. Young lady eventually appeared and promptly said we've finished serving. No apology. I am amazed bars can afford to turn away 6 customers let alone without an apology. Also strange on 2nd July to read Christmas menus displayed around the walls. No idea if these are very early for this year or left up from last year? I've worked in hospitality much of my life and the golden rule is 'never turn away a paying customer' Unfortunately a no stars review wasn't an option. Very disappointing.

Had to wait 3/4 of hour for a breakfast. No mugs available. Staff clearing trays away handing dirty crockery and table numbers then going to food counter to touch people's plates without cleaning hands first.food left on serving counter for ages before being brought out, people then sending it back because it was then cold as ours was,not as good as it used to be

Ok a 2 hour wait is totally unacceptable! On ordering I was told that delivery would be an hour, so ok great know, they’re busy, but happy they had told me this. After hour and half called and told , oh yeah your order is here on table, will be there in 5 minutes……….after the initial call, 2 hours later our order arrived, I think a free dessert would have been a great gesture. Our food was delicious though, roast dinner and a burger were tasty but this 2 hour wait needs addressing!
