Black Salt in Richmond upon Thames

The restaurant was amazing when it opened - the food was excellent (this is from somebody who regularly cooks Indian and has visited many top Indian restaurants both in London and India) and the service was friendly. However I am sad to say that the restaurant has gone remarkably downhill - the food is no longer the same quality, the service is 50/50 (and they were not even sure what nuts they used in their desert - peanut? pistachio? cashew? - food allergy sufferers beware!). Will not be going there again, considering that there are many other excellent Indian restaurants in London at that price.

Everything on the menu is made with love and great preparation and attention, you can feel it food, the starters are absolutely delicious, the tiger prawns and lamb chop is my favourite. The service is always incredible and the staff always go above and beyond to make you feel comfortable I was served by Jowet who was very attentive and welcoming.

This is a truly excellent Indian restaurant - lovely atmosphere and bright, light rooms; attentive and welcoming staff .. but most of all, delicious food. The starters especially are excellent but really all of it is super tasty. The food is beautifully spiced so that it is tasty without being too hot. The goat keema and the saffron prawns were very good - but all the dishes are excellent.

We as a couple and family have eaten here a few times and also collected to eat at home. Firstly the food is amazing! Secondly (but as important) the staff and their welcome and service is exemplary. The menu is innovative and I’ve never had anything that wasn’t seriously tasty. The Beetroot starter is just the best. So lucky to live near this restaurant

Delicious and different Indian food. Even the simple things like poppadoms are different and the innocent looking chutney is firey. we've been before so decided to explore the menu and opted for Sheek Kebabs and Channa Papdi Chaat as starters and then Biyryani and Paneer as mains with a nan and roti. Everything was delicious spicy but not over powering and the Biryani was moist, flavoursome and delicious

Very interesting food, but the experience was marred by desultory service. Had to ask for water FIVE TIMES, Naan bread FOUR TIMES, rice was forgotten though it had been ordered, and we had then to wait for it while our main course was growing cold. We also had to tolerate being looked at as though we were crazy when we queried any of this. The waitress stood over us while we checked the bill, then asked for a tip. The answer was no. The lighting is harsh, the venue cold and the ambience is echoey making conversation difficult.

Just terrible. I ordered Rogan josh very small portion for £19!!!! my main concern was that it was inedible. Told the staff to get the chef to taste it but nothing ever happened they just laughed it off. It was far too many cloves, that's all you could taste was cloves! My friend had a prawn curry and that was just bland, both had put through a blender so it was like eating baby food. I have eaten in the best Indians in England, Scotland and Ireland and this was terrible. Been to India 4/5 times for months at a time and never eaten such a bad curry. Avoid save yourself a shed load of money and try the Indian across the road!

Somewhere we have been meaning to visit for a while, mostly because it gets great reviews. It’s OK. The staff are lovely but it is a bit of a way from great. It certainly isn’t in the same league as Gymkhana. It also isn’t cheap. Our bill was over £80 with no drinks. Too much for a wuick curry.

Wonderful! So glad I found this place. The food was delicious, subtle, light but full of flavour. The artichoke and asparagus biryani was incredible. The samosas were perfectly cooked, not oily or heavy in any way. Beautiful Josh Rogan, melt-in-the-mouth lamb. And to finish, the pistachio ice cream, to die for! Special mention to the manager, Manish, for looking after us. Nothing was too much trouble, he gave us some much needed advice and was so kind. Thanks Manish! We’ll be back.

I’ve been to Black Salt several times and have never been disappointed. The food is always top notch, the service attentive and the vibe lively, especially on the weekends. It’s hands down my favourite Indian restaurant in south west London, And Manish and his team always do a fabulous job of looking after their guests. Would definitely recommend it, especially to those in search of authentic Indian fare.

An outstanding restaurant with a warm, welcoming, attentive and professional team headed by Manish. The chef’s exemplary culinary skills are proudly presented by the staff in an unfussy and fresh environment atypical of the ambience of most Indian restaurants. It is all about the food, the flavour and the company (although silences are normal with the twists and tastebud sensations which will change the way you expect Indian food to be cooked going forward!!).
