Black Bush in Sunderland

We decided to stop by as this place has been taken over with new owners. We were made welcome but was an issue getting to bar to be served due to a lot of bar stools at the bar and people sitting around at bar area. Food looked really lovely with a decent menu and competitive pricing.

Canny little pub sizable function room for parties & events.

It's a shame people pass this pub by. Lovely place. It needs more clientele. However, my only recommendation would be to give the front outside area a spruce up. Better hanging baskets(the ones there are small and flowers were dead) , move the outdoor seating area away from roadside and sweep up all the cigarette butts and clean ash trays . Maybe place some nice planters around to give it more kerb appeal. Not serving food at the moment so reason for 1 star rating on that. Service was lovely. Atmosphere not so great due to pub being empty, but I'd recommend that people don't pass it by.

Called in for an afternoon pint never drank a beer so fast full of foul mouthed screeching women left quickly with a headache. 👎👎

Think it's new management and only just started putting bands on. Giroscope were a great first choice. Decent prices and canny staff.

First time sins new owners I have been in, just popped in for few pints and was very welcoming and was a lovely pint.

I went there for my Christmas night out. I was over the Moon it was Friday, and it was buzzing with lots of people and a karaoke. we had a great time and will definitely be going there again.

Tried here after disappointment with Washington Arms. The drinks are much better but the clientele are the dregs of Washington. Some of the older ones should be institutionalised

Canny night out well worth a look on Steve the dj/karaoke guy really knows he's stuff mixture of music and Patrick the landlord is really friendly highly recommended

Went to try out the food yesterday, just after mid day, not one person in the place, no staff either, walked right through the two bars and straight back out again

Reopened 7/8 weeks ago, not many people going in 6-12 on a Friday night isn't very good, staff lovely and friendly pity the manager isn't and has an attitude. Prices are more than pubs around the area

Went as a group of six got a lovely seat. Food and service was amazing at a very reasonable price if you want home cooked tasty food and not the frozen food you get in a lot of pubs I would really recommend giving the black Bush a try

Jimmy has brought this place back to life! Really nice crowd of friendly people. Great to see kids laughing with their family and friends. Great value too. We shall return!

Friday night. No food. Staying in the area. Googled and found good reviews so went for it. Didn't tell us no food until we'd got our drinks. Waste of time.

No room for staff behind the bar when busy.

Good function room for a family event

Lovely meal, home made chilli home made chips sour cream sooo tasty portion was large . Granddaughter had cheese burger again all lovely home made chips, and fresh salad, none of the token lettuce leaf all salad and juicy tomatoes were fresh. Service friendly nothing too much trouble will definitely return if just for the home made chips.

Big place fantastic low prices good music night every other Thursday

I go occasionally for the carvery with my daughter, granddaughter and baby grandson. on a Wednesday and it has always been lovely. The staff are very friendly and the food is absolutely gorgeous. You get plenty of meat on your plate, the yorkshire puddings are homemade and not frozen. Also the mash potatoe is proper mash and the gravy is thick unlike some places i have been too. The pub is lovely and clean with a really nice relaxed atmosphere and the carvery prices are not expensive either......

Me my husband and 2 boys came here last Wednesday for the carvery and it was amazing the staff were lovely and made us feel welcome from the minute we walk in the door will definitely go back again

Hosted my mams send off after her funeral. Staff are great but it's not for a great selection of tap beers. That being said it's got a nice feel to it and it felt homely. Good place to chill out and drink your cares away.

We had my sister's funeral at the Bush yesterday. The food was good and the tea and coffee, which was help yourself, was on tap. We were given a lovely separate area at the front and everyone remarked on how nice it was... the bar was there for those who preferred a pint. The egg sandwiches and brocoli quiche were particularly good. At £3 a head I was amazed at the choice of food supplied. It was coming up to lunchtime and I noticed that the Wednesday carvery in the main area was home cooked and there was a simple choice of two roasts and a choice of fresh veg etc. I was very happy with the atmosphere on what, for us, was a sad day. Thank you to Claire and her staff.

Good time haf by all for a 65th birthday & retirement in one

We had cause to use the Black Bush earlier this year for a Wake after a death in the family. We visited to pub to discuss what we needed. From walking into the place to make the arrangements, through to the end of our celebrations we found the management very helpful. They helped us to work out what we needed and to calculate the numbers and amount of food that we would need. There was a great choice of food both hot and cold. The currys were particularly good. As a family that has several females in it, we asked about Prosecco which they readily supplied and at a great price. I think some were surprised at how many bottles were made to vanish. The managers also got us involved in some bar games, including pool. Overall the venue is of a good size and comfortably sat about 40 guests. They also provided us somewhere to put memorabilia on as well. Drinks prices were very reasonable and overall we had a great time. We'll definitely be going back again to try the Sunday lunches. Overall, a nice place with great staff and great value for money. From ourselves to the staff, a great big thank you for making what was a sad day into a happy celebration.

Booked function room for my 60th birthday party. Food was great more than enough. Friendly and attentive hosts who couldn't do enough to make the night special. Would definitely recommend for a function.

I ate here on Thursday night and I have been throwing up since, johns face made me Physically sick as soon as I walked in the pub he kept trying to fiddle and Lisa is dirty

Went for Sunday lunch, but the carvery standard was poor. The meat was nice, but that's about it. I got one tiny Yorkshire pudding, which had a distinct Aunt Bessie's look about it. The mashed potato was almost certainly instant mash - if not I don't know how they managed to get it to be such a dry texture. My daughter refused to eat it and she LOVES mash. They also didn't even have a slice lemon for a tonic water.

Abysmal service! Booked a room for a party. Was moved to another room to accommodate another booking we weren't aware of until 2 hours before we started. The friendly staff did their best but couldn't cope with the management's decision to have two parties at the same time and were still under pressure even when given help by their regulars! The food was by no means up to an average standard and the manager, who seemed more interested in his pint, was so blasè and dismissive about our complaints that we gave up and continued the party at home. A massive disappointment!! I have since heard the place is now under new management... well, it certainly couldn't get any worse so good luck to them but I can't see me returning to that place again.
