Barua Street Food in South Lakeland

Great communication before we visited on a couples night out, the place was really busy and had a great atmosphere. The staff explained everything exceptionally well. The food was beautiful and really good portion sizes . Special thanks to the bar who made me a special request spicy margarita - it was amazing!!! We will definitely return!!

Frustratingly, I had messed up my reservation as I’d accidentally booked for the day before. Knowing how disruptive this can be for restaurants, I felt pretty bad, however, the manager was absolutely fantastic and couldn’t have done any more to accommodate us. Within a few minutes, he’d managed to move things around and found us a table that we could have for an hour, despite turning walk ins away whilst we were waiting as they were fully booked. He patiently explained that the food would come out quicker than usual because of the situation, which of course was not a problem. The staff were great and talked us through the food and spice levels of the dishes we chose (my partner is not massively into spicy dishes but still loves Indian flavours). The food itself was extremely good. The menu is akin to Mowgli or Bundobust, but I would say better than both. We had around six plates between us. Individually we had the masala pad pad and bhel puri, cold dishes that acted as starters. For the hot dishes we shared masala dosa, samosa chaat and the butter chicken, with rice and a paratha on the side. All of these were really tasty and the butter chicken was some of the best I’ve ever had. There was a great drinks menu that included Indian influenced cocktails and a decent choice of craft beers, including local brewery Crooked River. We managed to order and get through all of the food in just under an hour, however at no point we were made to feel rushed or like we had inconvenienced them. Just as we were about to finish eating, the manager rushed upstairs to say he’d had a cancellation for a table of two so we could stay longer if we wanted. As we’d pretty much finished, he saved us a table downstairs for a drink and once down there, offered us dessert as there wasn’t as much of a rush due to the cancellation. We both had an espresso chaitini which was a great twist on the classic. What made my mistake frustrating for me, was the fact that my partner and I had got engaged the day before and we were celebrating that weekend in Keswick. I intentionally didn’t mention this after realising I’d booked the wrong day, as I didn’t want any special treatment when I’d messed up. However, the service was that good anyway, you’d have thought they already knew about our news - in fact, when we did mention it after we’d finished eating, they brought over complementary shot as a congrats. This really is a brilliant little independent restaurant. Located in the heart of Keswick, surrounded by great pubs and beautiful views, it was the perfect end to our celebratory weekend. I can’t thank the manager and staff enough for looking after us and would highly recommend it, not only for the service, but the fantastic quality of food we had. Thank you Barua!

My wife saw this place on TikTok and really wanted to visit to eat. Terrible, over priced over hyped and very bland. Service was not great and the local fish and chips was better, Which we had to go to afterwards as the food at barua 😞, we just left. Don’t bother, disappointing.

Visited with 5 mates for an evening meal. None of us had ever eaten at Barua before but had heard good things. Wow, we were not disappointed!!!! Firstly, the staff here made our night what it was before we'd even ordered our food. The lass who looked after our table was brilliant. So helpful and really good at her job. Sorry, I've forgotten her name. The food was next level. We asked the manager Kal to recommend a selection of food for our table, and he nailed it. We all absolutely loved it. Thanks to everyone, we will be back. So different to anything else on offer in the area. Xx

Expensive and luke warm hot chocolate. Service was slow but they were quite busy. I liked the modern decor and the feel of the place. Didn't have any food but it did look good.

Food was excellent, however staff advised us to buy far more than we could eat. Street portions are charged as you would expect for a full main. We are advised to order 5-6 selections (we questioned this) per couple when 3-4 would have been sufficient. We didn’t eat about half of what we were served despite it being very nice.

The food is decent enough but the portions are very small and overpriced. Watery dhaal, watery chickpeas with hardly any chickpeas in it, the masala dosa was tasty but hardly any filling in it. Seven pounds for one single corn on the cob particularly irked. The owner is quite insistent about ordering 4 dishes per person which was a bit pushy. I didn't appreciate not being given a receipt or enough time to check the bill, the owner asks customers to pay on the way out but only allows a moment to scan the bill in an iPad before paying which was odd.

Staff - we’re great from start to finish, always available and polite, Location - it’s down the lane and not on the main section but easy to find down from the car garage. Food - the service is basically when it’s made it comes out, there was 6 of us. We ordered 3 x bhel Puri, 3 x onion bhajis, 1 x butter butter corn, 3 x butter chicken, 1 x massala dosa, 4 x Parathas and 2 x basmati rice, the flavours were great but portion size apart from the onions bhaji were small. Some of us were still hungry after which is why it’s a let down. Drinks - limited to a few bottles of wine. Would be fine for a lunch but not if you’re hungry.

We loved eating at Barua so much we went 2 nights in a row! There is a happy vibe, buzzing and relaxed. The staff team is fabulous - energised, friendly and helpful. The food is the star - beautifully presented, the flavours are really well balanced, layered and intense. Everything we had was exceptional, our favourites being dahi puri, katchcumber and melon salad, buttered chicken, and Goan fish paired with the house made lime pickle. The Best.

Tiny portions of street food at restaurant prices but then it's still one of the best places for veggies to eat in Keswick (a town devoid of decent veggie / vegan grub). We had the samosa chat and channa which was quite good but small portions. The dosa was very small and soggy - they're supposed to be crispy. The portions of rice are minuscule. Mocktails come loaded with far too much ice.

Sam and his team went above and beyond to accommodate 15 of us, all meeting up for a keswick boarding school reunion. Fantastic atmosphere and service. The food was amazing and plentiful, we even took the leftovers back to property. Thanks again Sam, I wish you every success in Barua, I've heard lots of good things about you.

We were a large group of friends who went for dinner. We had the set menu which was absolutely amazing, really tasty, and so much food. The staff were great, and the restaurant is lovely. Would highly recommend

Went here with my son who picked the place to try. The menu was small but the service was friendly and quick. The food also came out quite quickly. The idea was we could order 4-6 dishes and then share them between us. Whilst this was presented as a novel idea, I felt that Indian and Chinese restaurants also have a similar idea. The food was presented well and my son enjoyed the shared starters and main courses. Personally, what I had was alright but I found the "shared experience" very similar to a decent Indian restaurant and so I didn't think that the idea was particularly novel. However, that's just my view!

My British Indian husband is very hard to please when it comes to Asian food but this was extraordinary. Served swiftly in a lovely relaxed well decorated environment this food was a flavour explosion. Delicious. The Dosa’s were light and tasty with well chosen chutneys. The outstanding dish was the Dahi Puri. Would highly recommend. Wish we’d found it earlier in our holiday

We came across this place accidentally whilst trying to find somewhere for breakfast on our last day in Keswick. We were sorry we’d not seen it sooner as the menu was great and we definitely would have had an evening meal here. We both had pancakes and they were perfect. The staff were friendly and attentive.

Just got back from Barua and very happy we went. Venue and staff were great, food was fresh and delicious, ordered 8 dishes from the menu between 3 of us and ate everything left nothing! Definitely recommend and will hopefully be back! Very happy 😁

We stumbled upon Barua when we were in Keswick in October 2023, and HAD to return this time around! Food is super fresh and absolutely delicious. As vegans, we loved the variety on the menu too, with lots of options for us to choose from.

Second visit to this excellent venue. An excellent meal, great staff, great menu choice with a range of dishes I’ve not come across on menus before. Food is so tasty. 3 diners, 7 dishes, portions look small, but are deceptively filling and only about £70. Great value. Would like to see it busier, but anyone I’ve mentioned it to has never heard about it, I’m spreading the word, but it needs to be better advertised. Very highly recommended.

A great resto with a compact but excellent menu for food and drinks. We will go back next time we’re in Keswick. Loads of vegetarian options and a few meaty ones - we tried as many plates as we could!

Fourth time we’ve been to Barua Street Food when staying in Keswick! We went twice in one week. Lovely relaxed place with friendly staff and food is fresh and delicious. Great tapas concept allows you to try lots of different dishes and share the experience. Favourites are the butter corn, dosa and dahi puri - some of the best things I’ve eaten, it’s that good. Will definitely be back.

I went here for a work do before Christmas and was really keen to come back with my vegan wife as they have such a great selection of food at a really high quality. We haven't had such a high standard of indian food since our old London days. Service is as friendly and efficient as always. Can't wait to go back with more friends and family.
