2nd time I’ve been, both times extremely good, food drinks and service. I’m really fussy about steak, liking them aged ! The sirloin I had was really good!

Been for steak night a couple of times. Sunday lunch and fish and chips once. All superb, great value and well presented.

Outstanding food and service from everyone at the Barley Mow. Owners are very welcoming and friendly always a great atmosphere. Food is full of flavour , fresh and served hot .... delicious!...compliments to the chef

My Wife and her two friends are here on Wednesday for lunch. The greeting was friendly and warm from the Good Management, we were offered a choice of table, the menu was varied and looked appealing, mince and dumplings was ordered, a chicken dish and my wife's choice was the steak pie with veg... Everyone of them thoroughly enjoyed their food, without fault, a check on got all thumbs up, clean plates all around, we had just enough room for a marvellous sticky toffee pudding,with plenty of sauce. This place has had some bad rep over the past year, so let's hope this couple pull it back to it's former glory some years back, it has the potential for a great friendly local, with the head chef being the other half of the management, I will be dining here soon with my wife ,as she has convinced me.... Great Sunday lunch today. New management has been in place only 8 weeks ... well with a visit. The cauliflower cheese was an addition, but we'll worth it... Great value.

The best Sunday lunch ever. The beef melted in the mouth and the vegetables are pipping hot, great staff and very affordable.

Went for a meal at the Barley Mow, my husband doesn’t eat meat so he ordered fish and chips, I ordered Scampi and chips, unfortunately they had neither, their was not one vegi option on the menu, not many places now do offer at least a burger would have been fine, so disappointed

Just had the mid week carvery absolutely amazing food was all cooked perfectly and such a large selection of vegetables. Great value for money and such friendly helpful staff. We will definitely be back soon 😊

Visited on Wednesday with my friends. The decor is very nice ,we had a lovely round table in the window there was six if us. We chose some from the 2 for £12 deal We had 4 cottage pie 1 corned beef pie and a macaroni cheese, the pies came with lovely homemade chips and a jug of gravy. The food was lovely and great value . The service was excellent and really friendly. Would definitely recommend

I called to order 5 Sunday lunches I requested different veg for each individual person , the lady on the telephone was polite and friendly When they arrived they where all individually named Exactly how I had explained on the telephone. I was so impressed. Each person said they enjoyed their Sunday lunch It was well worth the money well done to all the staff

Wow! If you want a 'proper' Sunday lunch delivered to your door, then The Barley Mow is the place to order from. Fantastic service. I rang around 12 noon, spoke to a lovely young lady who took my order and double checked with me that she had taken the order correctly, was given a slot between 3-4pm for delivery. We ordered 4 Sunday lunches, 1 x pork, 1 Turkey and two with Turkey and Gammon. True to their work - lunch arrived at approx 330pm - outstanding value for money. All of the Sunday roast meats are lean and plentiful, accompanied with an array of fresh (certainly not frozen) veggies - mashed potato, roast potato's, roast parsnip, carrots, cabbage, cauliflower, peas, separate 'homemade yorkshire puddings and a separate perfect gravy per dinner. The delivery driver is an absolute angel too, he handed me the heat protective bag to allow me to take my lunches out in the house myself, rather than juggling them on the doorstep. All lunches are delivered in large, sturdy foil platters - all sealed with the description of each meal on the lid. Can't say enough how fab The Barley Mow lunches are. Perfect from start to finish.

Today (09/05/2021), We decided to try the Barley Mow Inn, Birtley for a Sunday lunch take out. Having checked their social media page, we had the choice of Beef, Gammon, Turkey, Pork Lamb Shank & Mince/Dumplings. Prices started from £6. We decided to order 2 Adult Mince & Dumplings & 1 Adult Beef. All came with home made mash, roasties, swede, broccoli, carrots, peas, parsnips & savoy cabbage plus a Yorkshire pudding with the beef lunch & gravy for all. We placed the order by phone & collected it 40 mins later. Excellent service & the meals were hot & so delicious. Highly recommend for Sunday lunch, 10/10, best Sunday lunch we've had in a very long time. Will definitely be returning.

Brilliant. Love the fresh veg. Lunch carvery is so good. Had this pretty much once a week throughout lockdown. So recently discovered as a venue. Will continue to visit going forward. Always delish. And.... Puds with custard

Yet again we have had another delicious Sunday lunch, plenty of vegetables on the plate, the pork cooked to perfection and a lovely home cooked Yorkshire pudding with lashings of gravy, the staff as always were excellent, so very friendly, so glad that they have stayed open for delivery or collection during the lockdowns, sorry no photos as we were starving

Incredible take away Sunday roast. We placed a large order. Very reasonably priced. The food was piping hot when it arrived. So tasty... thank you so much!!! Will absolutely be ordering again!!!

Used by ordering a takeaway as pub closed. Ordered two main courses and puddings for £10 in total, plenty of choice and cheap local delivery service, if required. Beef dinner and Mince and Dumplings were plentiful and delicious. Apple crumble and Sticky Toffee pudding also delicious. Excellent value and good quality.

we had the sirloin last night and i had sirloin tonight and Linda had the chicken madras, this is about half a doz times now we have had the meals delivered from the barley mow and i cannot fault anything, not only the food was out of this world but the service and delivery were 1st class too, the menu is so extensive and we would defo recommend

Until my last order, I had nothing but great things to say about this pub. However, the customer service we recieved on our last order was appalling. I ordered the two course special & side order of chips for delivery. The first course + chips were delivered, not the second course. We were still charged for it. I rang the pub immediately to let them know. He apologised and said he'd tried to get a hold of the delivery driver. I rang again 75 minutes later. Spoke to another person. He had no idea what had happened; said all the other staff had gone home. He apologised again and took my details. I asked whether I should ring after 4pm the next day if it's not sorted. He told me not to worry, it would be by then. The following day, we rang back a third time after 4pm after hearing nothing about the second course being delivered. A female staff member apologised - again - asked if we wanted delivery that day or another and said it would be around 6pm. At 7pm, we rang a fourth time saying our delivery hadn't arrived. We were told they were behind. After expressing our frustration at having to ring four times to chase this up, the staff member's tone became unpleasant and said again they were behind. After this, we agreed to have the dessert delivered another day. It's been 10 days since the order went wrong. We have had no one ring us to try to re-arrange the order or to offer us a refund. To be frank, I don't think the pub cares; they have our money and there's new customers to deal with, so why sort out an order that has gone wrong? I have never, ever had to chase up a delivery four times before with any company. Nor have I been repeatedly assured that the issue would be rectified when it wasn't. The situation drove me to tears on more than one occasion. I cannot recommend this pub. Nor will I buy from them again.

Fantastic! Recommended by friends. Had 4 x two course lunch special £5. A mixture of carvery dishes and puds. Absolutely superb. All tasted great and homemade and the staff were lovely. Give it a try

We had a fish and chip takeaway from the barley mow last Friday and I have to say it was one of the best quality fish and chip meals I have ever had. We will be recommending this to all our friends and family.

Just been to the Barley Mow for our dinners and it was absolutely beautiful. I’ve seen loads of posts on here and wanted to try it for ages but due to normally working sundays I’ve never getting there, I wasn’t disappointed at all. The staff are so friendly, food was all fresh, the prices are amazing value, the music was good. Will definitely be back.

This has got too be the worse dinner ive ever had.. yorkshires completely burned, came stone cold.. funny taste to the pork. And couldnt chew the meat was that dry... gravy ok thats about it.. still hungry after waiting all day for it to be delivered.. dissapointed :(

My partner’s mince and dumplings were amazing, my corn beef pie was on a dry side but it tasted lovely. We were in a rush and we were in and out with full bellies within half an hour. Great stuff ! Staff in there is fab !

Really enjoyed our meals ,there were 9 in our party thought we might have to wait a while ,not so, the service was very good ,the staff were very friendly and helpful,and very reasonable prices,they have a specials board so plenty of choice ,the pub is nicely decorated which adds to the atmosphere,so I’d definitely recommend this place and there is parking available so that’s a bonus

I am self isolating, I ordered a delivery of mince and dumplings to my front door. It was delicious, and enough for my dinner tomorrow as well.

There does not appear to have a designated car park but still managed to find space around back. The barley Mow is on the Durham road on the way to chester le street from Birtley. There is a large step to enter, not good for those with mobility problems. I decided to have a carvery, there was a free dessert with this. I found that it was very limited and was at the end of a food run so I had to do with the almost empty containers.. There was a long time between ending my meal and receiving the dessert. I asked about the toilets and found they did not have any disability toilets and the ordinary ones were in the bar next door. If anyone has dietary needs then they must phone in advance to organise on 01914104504

Returned to this establishment as we are never disappointed the carvery was excellent our youngest grandson who turns seven tomorrow requested lunch then to the cinema for his birthday present it was a no brainer where we decided to eat highly recommend this establishment

Heard good things about the Barley Mow so decided to try their takeaway sunday lunch. We weren't disappointed large portions plenty of meat veg and Yorkshire pud all really well cooked with a big tub of rich gravy. Good delivery time and good value...highly recommended.

Recently attended a birthday party hosted at the Barley Mow. What great night hosted superbly with lots of fun good beer, good food and great people. Highly recommended venue.

Pre new years Sunday lunch with family. Service was friendly and pleasent and food was good value for money. I would advise if going on Sundays to pre book as very busy.

Instead of cooking a lunch at home, my wife and I decided to go out instead. I phoned the Barley Mow and they booked us in for our lunch (booking is strongly advised as this is a popular pub and fills up quickly on a Sunday. The Sunday roasts are very good value indeed. You can have a large or a small meal. Other food is available as well.

First time at this establishment checked the menu out absolutely huge array of dishes the grandsons were not going to be disappointed lovely pub with outdoor patio and play area so we decided to see if the food tasted as good as the huge menu choices were we disappointed not in the slightest the staff were professional friendly and well up to the job a big thanks from our group

Best night ever. From walking in the door we were greeted and shown to our table. This was set out lovely . 16th birthday balloon for grandson & lovely birthday balloon for myself. Meal was done to perfection. Service was excelent. Nothink to much for staff. Constantly checking if everythink was ok. Or if we needed anythink. So friendly and welcolm . Excelent place.

Visited the Barley Mow tonight as a first with work colleagues. Do not be put off when you walk in by the tired decor! The staff are friendly, helpful and welcoming and the food is clearly cooked by a chef who cares and who knows his niche. Portions are plentiful, meat and fish well cooked, and all at very reasonable prices. Well done to all staff and will definitely be returning

Went to Barley mow for a friend's birthday bahar. Me and friends had chicken Kiev and one friend had fish and chips. What a lovely meal and good service and friendly staff. Definitely be coming back.. There was 5 of us on table 14.

There were four of us, met on a Wednesday afternoon around 14.00hrs, place was not busy in fact it was exceedingly quiet, one person behind bar who made eye contact with you as soon as you walked in, chose a table, ordered drinks and food some twenty minutes later, one of the meals a hanging halumi skewer wasn’t hanging as kept sliding of skewer whickham we all found amusing we ordered a selection of tapas, deep fried Brie, chorizo sausage, squid, scampi, mac an’ cheese, buffalo wings, and one other which eludes me, all were very tasty and well presented with various accompaniments, ambience was good, bar area clean and tidy, toilets clean well decorated, blue badge parking either side of main entrance, would we go again, yes, but I believe prebooking for Sunday lunch is advisable as gets very busy, two large red wines, four soft drinks and a herbal tea and the bill including food was £56.

Had read the reviews so decided to give this pub a try today.The Sunday lunch was absolutely delicious and the price was fantastic.Would definitely recommend and will definitely return. Very friendly staff.

Visited a local garden centre and felt like a bit of lunch. It was a toss up between the Wheatsheaf or Barley Mow. Barley Mow won and we weren’t disappointed. They offer a comprehensive menu and a choice of specials. I picked the 7oz rump steak from the specials board. It was one of the best pieces of meat I’d eaten in a while. Well cooked and tasty.

Visited on Friday for my Birthday lunch and certainly wasn’t disappointed, I went for the fish and chips, hubby went for fish cakes and chips which were both on special for £5.99, definitely worth the money, portions were very good size, in fact my fish was huge, the staff were really friendly and service very good, will most certainly visit again

Outstanding Sunday dinner. First timer and will definitely be back and recommend. Good choice of carvery, everything hot and service excellent. Better than the Toby hands down.

Popped in here with the Mrs after she’d had lunch here with a friend a couple of days back. Her comment about best fish and chips was backed up with what I had at the barley mow tonight. Probably the best sit down fish supper I’ve had for a long time and yes it was cod and yes it was the size of a small whale......the Mrs had a steak which was cooked to perfection, and she is VERY fussy . So a 10oz rump with ALL the trimmings, one small whale all the trimmings a pint and three g&t; came to only £24.50. That’s what I would call value. One round of drinks in town comes to more! If some people commenting here are after fast food then suggest they go to a FAST FOOD restaurant and PAY MORE. Parking here is a doddle as there is a large public car park at the back with several disabled parking slots. Staff here are great too. We are going back for the fabled Sunday lunch tomorrow so good we won’t mind waiting for it. The drinks are cheap and the hospitality great keep up the good work guys.

Popped in at teatime for fish and chips I had a mince and dumplings excellent I like this place it has a good atmosphere and the beer is good as well it is a friendly little place and family run there is never too much trouble to give you what you require and it’s not posh but it’s good

Excellent carvery meals with an additional a la carte menu too. The sweets were delicious. Prices below average and service friendly. Atmosphere in pub is friendly and there is adequate car parking. I plan to return for more lunch time breaks. Thank you the Barley Mow Pub

Visited The Barley Mow, Birtley, for a cheeky mid week date night with my husband. What a lovely Wednesday it was, as we stumbled upon the steak night special. Two soups, two steaks and a bottle of wine for £18.95. Lovely food and lovely friendly staff. Thank you to Stephanie and Michelle for a wonderful night. We will be back.

Bargain £18.95 two bowls soup bread bun and butter then two steak meals salad chips onion rings mushrooms and tomato plus Diane or peppercorn sauce. And a bottle of wine (hardys). Staff are lovely very helpful. You can also order from the menu as well.

My mam and I came here for a treat. It was my first time, but my mam had been previously and couldn’t wait to come back. We had two meals off the special board (2 for £9.50 I think...) the meals came out and they were massive, I had pie and chips, and my mam had the gammon, they were both lovely and plenty of food on both! We could hardly eat our food, but we couldn’t say no to their desserts. We both had their red velvet cake, it was truly amazing! We had our two meals, two drinks and a desert for all under £20.

Just had the steak deal wednesday you get 2 soup 2 steak meals and a bottle of wine. Beautiful. £18.95 per couple we also tried the deserts. The portions are huge. Nice and clean and the staff are so friendly. We are also trying the carvery on Sunnday scrummy

Today we met up here. It was nice, cool and friendly place. Staff were helpful and looked after us well. I had corn beef pie and home made chips with peas and gravy. It was to die for. I had the Victoria sponge cake with pouring cream. You couldn’t fault the meal. We will be going back here. Thank you to the chef and staff

A Quaint old fashioned pub but the food is good with a good selection, lovely carvery and you have a choice of size which is good if you cannot eat large meals. Not much parking

Today 8/10/17 went to barley mow Inn for a Sunday carvery very pleased with manager as he was very helpful also staff very friendly and happy nothing was a bother to help us trina and steph our Sunday carvery was really nice and tasty would recommend and would definitely go back again children even loved it

We ordered the "small mixed grill " and half chicken and what a treat they were. My boyfriend has a very healthy appetite and he couldn't finish the mixed grill. He said it was brilliant. I had the chicken and it was really tasty. There is a very extensive menu and very reasonable prices too. Great friendly service as well.

Mi esposa y yo visitamos aquí regularmente ya que no se puede superar por calidad y precio. Esta noche tuve una ternera y baguette y patatas fritas. La baguette era fresca y la carne era tierna, cortar con un cuchillo tallado y no una cortadora...

Tenía la parrilla muy sabroso. Muy bien preparada la carne, buena selección de verduras recién cocinado. Cinco de nosotros con bebidas sólo más de £40.

No está mal, pero no me gustó el hecho de que eran abundantes las bandejas de comida para llevar en el tranvía asados a muchas personas en una zona tan pequeña tratando de conseguir comida.

We ordered a Sunday lunch for delivery at 1.30pm and still has not come and it's now 4.30pm we phoned the pub up to ask were it was to be told that it's out for delivery but this was at 2.30pm so basically they have not bothered to even attempt delivery they did not take a contact number to ring us if they could not find the address this is not good service Won't be ordering again

As a family, there's always at least a few of us in here every Sunday. Great all round. Very consistent which is why it's always packed! See you Sunday!

Tried restaurant today for Sunday lunch. Could not fault it. Very reasonable priced. Lovely creamy mash thick meaty gravy and piping hot. Good choice of vegetables and a friendly staff and pleasant surroundings. Would highly recommend giving it a try.

This was our first visit to the Barley Mow. The staff were friendly and welcoming and nothing was too much bother for them. It was a steak special night when we went and other diners' plates were piled high with steaks and all the trimmings. We're not big meat eaters so I thought that Whale of cod couldn't possibly be that big but I was wrong! I couldn't finish the enormous portion of battered cod, new potatoes, salad and mushy peas. My other half had gammon steak which almost covered his plate. It came with a choice of chips, mash or new potatoes too as well as veg and egg or pineapple. Needless to say it was too much so our doggies had a very tasty treat later. Friendly, efficient staff and plentiful food, reasonably priced.

Great Public House, serves great food and a really good pint of Guinness! Fantastic steaks cooked as requested and served with all the trimmings. Filling Fish and chips with mushy peas, really generous portions. Clean and tidy dinning area. Lounge is very relaxing. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend this place for a visit. Always come when we visit my family.

Absolutely dreadful. We ordered the mushroom Wellington and it came WHITE PASTRY we new then it had been warmed up in the microwave not the oven which any chef knows pastry is not warmed up in microwave. It was soggy and when cut into had not been cooked thoroughly. We did not get asked half way through if everything was ok so when they came to take away the plates later we told them it was disgusting and ate chips only. The chef did not deny only offered us a free sweet. Don't go. .. avoid

My friends and I have been going here for a few months and have had great meals each visit. The service is great and pub has a lovely atmosphere. My other half who is very hard to please and complains about most meals when we go out has had nothing to complain about about either and went last week with his son and said it was the best T-bone steak he had ever had.I haven't visited yet for Sunday lunch but the rest of family go most weeks and rave about them.Go along you won't be disappointed, I would recommend booking for Sunday lunch as I know it gets very busy.

Sunday Lunch at the Barley Mow is worth the money, Carvery, very full plates and very tasty food. Landlord and staff make you feel really welcome, even if you have never been there before. Good parking, good beer garden, excellent for the little ones. All in all a lovely pub.

It might not be the Ritz but the food probably tastes better ! Sunday lunch better than most I have visited even the take away lunch is good. Lovely staff but you better book as it gets mega busy

Good British food freshly prepared and served. Vegetables were fresh and well cooked, everything very tasty. Good prices. Waitress very efficient, and pleasant. The dining room is spacious, clean well set out.
