Lovely service but the food is the worst I have had in London ever! The liver pate cam with cheap plastic white bread! The rest of the meal was really tasteless and poor quality! really not recommended

¡volveremos!

Because if you don't, don't assume it will always be there. And if it isn't we will all have lost something. A part of Soho that isn't exactly 50's kitsch, but is perhaps the closest we've got. AND it's had a New Year (2014) semi-make over. The problem is that the things we like - pop-up food bars, catching snacks on the run - are killing the things we like even more - long lunches and conversation with interesting friends and people like Gregoire (who runs the Bar du Marche pretty much single-handed). And although we do these things (long lunches etc) less than we'd like we will kick ourselves if the BdM goes by default because not enough of us go there. So if you're anywehere within walking distincne go to Greg's place (if you're lucky his son will be working there too). And if you're not within walking distance, get walking. Either way - GO THERE!

I used to go to Bar du Marche for lunch every so often in the mid-noughties and revisited it for dinner last night, and it is still as good as ever. I really don't understand some of the comments on here. It is exactly what you'd expect from an authentic, French bistro: frites, bread, wine and unobtrusive (if inattentive) service, all at a great price. My friends and I hadn't caught up for ages, so once the wine arrived, we appreciated being left alone for a while to choose. Okay, so we did have to request the waitress to take our order in the end, but it wasn't a great hardship, and she was absolutely lovely when she arrived. I had chicken in peppercorn sauce, the chicken was succulent and huge, the sauce was delicious and there were enough perfect frites to feed an army. For £10.50 I honestly couldn't ask for more. So it isn't Le Gavroche. But it doesn't pretend to be. If you want fancy, go somewhere else. If you want unpretentious French food in a good atmosphere and a reasonable price, I heartily recommend Bar du Marche.

The barman/waiter/chef was really lovely and did try hard to deliver good food and service (we were the only ones in here) but on the chef front, he just didn't cut le moutarde. We went because my 9yr old was desperate to try frogs legs (don't ask) and it was the only place I could find that served them. Interestingly the starters weren't too bad - we went super cliched and opted for frog, snails and pate du foie gras. The creatures were fine, the pate du foie gras wasn't even remotely what it claimed to be.Onto les plats.....it said steak. Alarm bells should have gone off when le chef couldn't name the cut. It was wrong on every level - flavour, texture....to be honest I thought it was a cheap cut - possibly shin or braising steak. My confit du canard was canard sans confit - had to saw the meat off the legs - a confit should fall apart. Also - a word of warning - it is very very expensive for what it is - 2 adults, 2 kids, 4 starters, 4 mains, 1 wine, 2 cokes - £170.Pop in for a cheeky vin or a cafe, but do not eat!

This restaurant looks inviting from the outside; but do not eat here! I waited an absolute age for some snails. They were gritty, tasteless, and I suppose the blackened carbon around them could once have been parsley, but it seems unlikely. When the duck arrived, after another interminable wait, the potatoes were stone cold, although the rest of the (hopelessly overcooked) food was far too hot. I sent the plate back - glowering looks from the staff, despite the fact that the restaurant was almost empty (entirely understandably) When - after another lengthy wait - the plate was returned - the potatoes were barely warm, but the rest of the meal was now radioactive (presumably, they just stuck it in a microwave). No apology offered, and clearly the staff wanted to talk to each other rather than serve their (few) customers. No deduction was offered from the (extortionate) bill. After complaining, amid great hostility, the waitress offered me a dirty £5. I declined. DON'T EAT IN THIS GHASTLY DUMP.

Stopped in here to shelter from the rain and have a coffee, which was ok but expensive and slopped over saucer. Decided to stay and eat. The guy in charge - the one from martinique - was rather mouthy and did not want the two of us to sit at a table for 4 near the door, in case some large party arrived, but once two other single diners left we were alone. Food was nothing to write home about and expensive, and service slow. Bill was not itemised and rather vague, so I think we were over charged but didn't want to argue the toss.

The worst place I've been for years! I actually don't remember eating a worst meal!!! DO NOT EVER GO THERE!Food: absolutely bland, tastes more like avarage take-away than french bistro!Customer service: below zero... waited hour and a half for 3 meals, when finally complained, the owner and chef came out to tell us off for complaining and explaining if we order well done, takes longer... absolutely NO apologies...In summary: the worst expeience I've ever had...waited 1 1/2 hours for horrible food and got shouted out for being my fault for ordering well done???Well done Mr Chef... never to be back ever!!!

I enjoyed this place for many years whilst living in London. It's pretty low key, but warm and welcoming with a great comforting menu that hits the spot whether you're looking for moules frites, steak frite, or a smashing salad.Since moving out of London I go back when I can, and it always delivers, at great value. One of the few places I'm happy to drink red wine, knowing it'll be lovely. In my top 5.

Myself, my wife and daughter found this restaurant by mistake but we enjoyed the meal we had. It is basic but clean and friendly, so that it not any criticism; the menu is reasonable but somewhat pricey. The food though was wonderful, I had the Chicken Breast with pepper sauce - you must try it, the best I have ever had and wow, that pepper sauce had a kick to it; my wife's mushroom omelete was fairly average but okay - she kept looking at my plate enviously. The only downfall is the price of the house wine. We had two half litre carafes which cost £29. We should have had it by the bottle which would have been far cheaper, and to be honest, we have had better but even so it was palatable. Even with these comments, we still enjoyed the meal (the chef is from Martinique and has a ready sense of humor as there was an American couple in and when the chef was asked his name by the husband said it was 'Mon Cherie' so the American husband kept calling him that to the chefs great amusement) and on balance, I would go back again and still enjoy what I had, hence the four star rating.

The food was average. I ordered the moules with cream and white wine. I got moules with hot water and celery. The wine left a lot to be desired but I forgave both of these relatively minor points. What did however ruin this was the manager. The waitress was polite enough, if a little 'busy' however she failed to mention when we arrived that their card machine wasn't working. At the end of the meal she informed us. Since the bill was knocking on for £100 for two people and I didn't have cash to that value to hand I suggested she take my card number / or give me their bank details and I'd transfer the bill immediately. She said this was possible and that she was happy to trust me.Then came the oafish manager who demanded that he'd "escort us to the cash machine" if we didn't give him cash at once. I repeated my offer and he dismissed it out of hand, shouting at me and telling me that it was not a solution and that the only solution was for us to come the cash machine at once with him or he'd not let us leave and call the police! Ridiculous! I was cross enough at his attitude and lack of apology but then he started shouting at me and asking if I had come there for a fight? It's bizarre behaviour I've never experienced in all my life. The cook / manager of the place then pushed me toward my table, screaming and shouting at me. I was so upset I then had to call the police who came and calmed him down (just about) but even whilst I was on the phone he continued to rant and rave at me - an awful experience for all in this second-rate restaurant. It was interesting that when I left there was a man next door who said that this sort of trouble happend quite frequently and that he wasn't at all surprised.Needless to say I shalln't be returning and I advise all who do to proceed with caution.

We had just come from a theatre matinee and we were looking for a nice restaurant for an early dinner, 1800 hrs. My wife has food allergies so every place we looked into either couldn’t or wouldn’t accommodate her needs. Most were your typical bar/bistro, Sushi, or Italian restaurant you would find on every corner in every big city. Then we stopped at Bar du Marche to look at the menu. The owner chef came out to meet us to see if he could help us. He told my wife that he would be happy to accommodate all of her needs (no egg, dairy, wheat, and gluten). The restaurant has maybe 6 or 7 tables small and intimate and if you’re so inclined you can have a nice conversation with your neighboring dinners. Greg cooks everything to order and it comes to you table as soon as it’s ready. The food tasted the best I’ve had in London and I’m a very harsh critic when it comes to what I eat. When most people say a restaurant is great I’d probably say it’s was just OK. Here’s what we ordered; mussels in a wine sauce no butter (for my wife), sautéed chicken liver over a warm salad vinaigrette, porterhouse steak, duck legs and vegetables (for my wife), Boeuf Bourgignon. All the mains came with fresh vegetables cooked just right and potatoes tasted fresh as if they were made specifically for my meal. My son had Crème brûlée which he said was fantastic. No room for desserts and coffee for the rest of us. The white wine Greg suggested by the carafe was perfect with the mussels, the red wine we had with dinner was OK, and that’s the only part of the meal that could have been improved on. This is a find that everyone doesn’t know about. Worth a chance. When you go write your own review so people don’t think this one was written by a friend of the owner.

I can only describe our meal as pitiful. The patron is undoubtedly charming but the food is awful. After a Ricard each the soupe à l'oignon my fiancée ordered was watery, clearly from powder and smelled strongly of raw onion; no doubt due to the chunks of raw onion that floated on the surface. My escargots with garlic and parsley butter were without garlic or parsley. They were tough, dry and in a slick of butter that tasted of nothing other than butter and snail that was off. I was actually embarassed for the waitress as, for the first time ever, I gagged whilst eating something. The pork that followed for both of us was overcooked to the point of solidity for both of us. Upon complaining about this, we were given steaks a substitute and these were tough despite being cooked seignant. To add insult to injury the complimentary digestif had quite clearly been watered down with tea.I cannot recommend highly enough that you go somewhere else. Lest it be said that I am being pernickety in any way or judging by the wrong standards, I lived in France for several years and the absolute worst meal I ever had there was a hundred times better than that which I had at Bar du Marché.

ok, so we were a bit in a hurry, and all the places that looked good in that area were full, so we decided to go to this empty French place (me being French...). As soon as I looked at the menu, I knew it was a mistake. And indeed it was: 4.5GBP for a pint (but at least the beer was good compared to the rest), the mash potatoes was not home made (purée mousseline as we call it in France), and on and on. All of that for 73GBP, 3 people. Where is my nice little Thai or Indian restaurant pleaaaassssse!! I would not recommend it to anyone, even my worse enemy!

We went here with high expectations of experiencing a good value french meal as this was the reputation. The food was awful and it was £55.00 a head!!!!! I started with fish soup - supposed to be 'authentic and home made': it was thin and tasted more of tomato than fish, the rouille hadn't been near a garlic clove and the cheese was wet. I then had carre d'agneau: tough, tasteless with appalling gratin dauphinoise that had clearly been cooked the day before and green beans so overcooked that there was neither texture nor flavour. My companion fared little better - frogs legs were overcooked and the fish platter was uninspiring and again overcooked. A terrible evening although the company was great. THe staff didn't even notice we were unhappy and we left feeling we had been ripped off.
