On a Saturday night, my friend and I were in need of food and with only an hour to spare. After having been refused service in a posh Japanese in Haymarket (maybe because of our trainers?) and having considered and dismissed many establishments along the way, we both gingerly agreed to enter Le Troisieme, despite it being worryingly empty. The decor of the place is, indeed, superb. It felt like being in France again. Maybe the France of my childhood, on top of that. All very quaint. We were served, cheerfully and courteously, by a lovely Argentinian girl. My friend had duck plus my vol-au-vent aux champignons (at the end of the day I wasn't that hungry), and we had sparkling water. The food arrived speedily - my companion seemed to like it as he cleared both plates. We were deeply engrossed in conversation and appreciated the quiet of the place. The surprise was, alas, was the bill - £30 for a starter and a main and sparkling water in a little, unpretentious restaurant? I briefly wondered if other food had materialised with me failing to notice, but no - we really had only one serving of duck and one stuffed yorky pudding. We were too much in a good mood to argue, but the day after, reminiscing, I couldn't help but thinking: "what?".

We came here over 3yrs ago and it was run by a lovely man called Ali. He was funny and generous. When I was meeting up with 2 old friends, I remembered it and booked a table. It is a beautiful quaint restaurant and reasonable prices. The food was ok but too much garlic butter in everything. The wine was good.So here is the bad bit, we were sitting for about 20mins catching up, we had wine and were having a good time when a lady came over and asked us what we wanted to eat. I apologised as we had not even looked at the menu and she tutted and walked off! my friend and myself were gob-smacked. there was another lovely girl serving who was nice but the lady who we found out later has rented the restaurant off Ali, kept shouting things accross the restaurant. She was rude and it felt like we were an inconvience to her. Ali come back and dont let this horrible woman ruin your lovely restaurant.

After a busy and chaotic Friday afternoon this was a wonderful, purely accidental place to find in the heart of London. The service was friendly. I was given a wonderful corner where I could eat undisturbed and out of the way. This restaurant was more like a traditional French cafe. I wasn't rushed for a theatre booking so was able to take things nice and slowly but my waitress seemed to have an uncanny knack of knowing when I was ready for something else and was attentive without being obtrusive. I liked this place and I will be tempted to come again.

We visited Le Troisieme before going to see The Book of Mormon last night. We only arrived at 6pm so had to have a quick turn-around before the show started at 7.30. We were shown to our seats straight away and the very friendly waitress asked if we were going to a show. We ordered within 5 minutes and I honestly don't think we waited more than 10 minutes for our food. We both had sirloin steak with peppercorn sauce and it was delicious. We ordered the Merlot which was really lovely too (so much so my geeky husband had to make a note of it in his good wine app on his phone)! We even had time for a creme brulee and were out the door by 7.15. The theatre is literally about a 2 minute (if that) walk away so this is a great option if you are going to that show. It's not a fancy restaurant but it has an authentic French Bistro feel.

Went here for a pre-theatre light lunch. Waited ages for it to arrive and, when it did, it was so inedible that we asked politely for it to be taken away and replaced with something else. Waited ages again and ran out of time. We explained to the waitresses that we had to go and we were told to "leave and never come back" and that it "was our fault because we had not allowed enough time". I have never been treated so rudely in a restaurant before. It was extremely upsetting.I notice that some other reviewers have had similar experiences. After this treatment a couple at an adjacent table told us that they, too, were appalled by the staff's attitude to us. Nobody should grace or support an establishment where customers are treated with such contempt.

Pricing was reasonable at £25 per head inclusive of generous amount of wine, nibbles and 2 courses each. 3 house wines offered by the glass. The (red) one we chose was excellent and very good value. This restaurant was not my choice as I had vague memories of an unsuccessful previous visit a year or so ago. However, my companion had kindly organised the evening, including tickets to the play at The Pinter theatre, so this place was very convenient and I thought it worth another try. Sadly, from my point of view, this was a mistake. My starter of prawn and avocado was ok but unexciting and poorly presented. We had to ask for bread to go with and a very small basket arrived, which was just about enough for one. The big disappointment was the Salade Nicoise; tinned tuna, tinned sweet corn, no tomatoes, no potatoes, no olives, no anchovies. Really? In a French restaurant? I try to avoid the chains like Cote but their Nicoise is much better and much closer to the real thing. The waiting staff were very polite and dealt with a busy restaurant with charm and politeness. However, I won't be rushing back for more at this joint.

Once through the door of Le Troisieme you could imagine you were in the side street of a small French town of 40 years ago. The slightly faded charm of this cosy room with a few tables running along a traditional bar, with the Patron as often as not leaned against the bar chatting to a few regulars, makes this hugely different most of the aggressive tourist-baiting joints on these hectic streets close to Picadilly Circus and Leicester Square. A real oasis of old-fashioned values. I've been back a few times, and have actually been recognised and welcomed by the loyal and unchanging staff. I can't recall many other places in the West End where that has ever happened. The food is marvellously simple and authentic, onion soup, steak and frites, tarte tatin. Wine is reasonably priced and always well chosen. And if you choose the linger away the evening there, no-one hurries you out of your seat. A gem!

It is a grubby little restaurant, the menu is about as far away from french as it is possible to be. We ordered chicken, without the fries and salad. It came with fries, an extra dish of fries, small side salad, and boiled cauliflower, carrots and broccoli, and an extra dish of the same vegetables. There have long been genuinely French gems in the centre of town. Some survive, ludicrously fey, playing the 'romantic' card and fleecing the lovelorn. Some became neighbourhood favourites... and sold out. (Le Tire Bouchon off Golden Square comes readily to mind.) Le Bar du Marche at the top end of Berwick Street was always great if you wanted a reasonably-priced taste of everyday France and a good time - but our friends who were regulars say it's not what it was. Last week, heading home after a great show at the Harold Pinter theatre in Panton Street, we noticed Le Troisieme's board advertising French Onion Soup, Snails and Steak Frites... We didn't make it home quite as planned. As soon as we entered, we recognised Patrick, the knowing and knowledgeable front of house and barman at Bar du Marche. We had the soup and steak, a carafe of Picpoul and a bottle of reasonably priced, highly drinkable red. Patrick sat and chatted and didn't rush us. Over armagnac, we learned he set this place up a few years ago when working relations at the B du M became strained. It has the same layout - small ground floor bar with a few tables and (I think) more tables downstairs - and a similar relaxed atmosphere. Le Troisieme is not a UK chain bistrot, nor a slick Zedel-styled brasserie, just a bloody good, genuine piece of France with a spot-on patron, right in the centre of the West End. It also continues the French connection of 'The French', L'Etoile and the like. We hurried for the last tube with a well refreshed 'A bientot'.

This is the sort of restaurant you think you're going to find in Paris but you are forty years too late. From the aloof but agreeable patron to the well executed steack frites it's the genuine article. When we arrived we were chatting to the lady behind the bar and she told us that they were supposed to be closed at lunchtimes on public holidays as their usual lunch time trade stems from offices. However, the reservation company had erred, so they opened especially for us. We offered to go somewhere else but she charmingly told us we were very welcome & that the chef was waiting to prepare whatever we liked from the menu. We went to Le Troisieme for a glass of wine after the theatre, the place was almost deserted at 9pm on a Saturday evening which should and it didn't take us long to understand why. When we finally got some attention we ordered a bottle of Chardonnay and some finger food. After 5 minutes the waitress came back to check again what we had ordered, the Sauvignon? No, the Chardonnay. So we got the small food but no wine, but after 10 minutes she comes back to ask: wouldn't you like something to drink? YES, the Chardonnay we ordered twice already! Oh, yes, I forgot, I'm so busy (only one other table in the whole restaurant...). After finally getting the wine she asks, so are you ready to order the food? Thanks but we only wanted to have a drink. Oh, hmmmm, ok. So the owner comes to accuse us: this is a restaurant, you cannot just have some wine, you have to eat! But this is a wine bar as it says on the door... And the argument went on. I've never had such incompetent and rude service. The way they reacted was so aggressive that we didn't dare to ask them to take out the 10% service charge from the bill, which was the ultimate insult, we just wanted to get out of there.

Me and my partner go to a lot of French restaurants and some are better than the others, however this one was just a disgrace to French cuisine. We went there on Tuesday for a pre theatre meal on a speacial ocassion. Once we entered the restaurant, it was very quiet (being an early evening) so we have been served very quickly. There have been only two waitresses, who have been speaking their own language all the time we were in the restaurant (NOT FRENCH) and as the place was very empty and little - all we could hear their talk in foreign language. I went for non theatre menu and my partner have chosen a special theatre menu. I have ordered duck for my main course and when I have not been asked which way I would like it to be cooked, i have pointed out to the waitress - that I want it Medium rare. My partner have ordered a medium rare steak. Once our main courses arrived, my duck was well done, chewy and tasteless... The steak was cooked as asked, but was cold. As we were in hurry for the theatre, there was no time to wait for new orders - so we shared the steak between us to.. With two glasses of red wine, 2 main courses and one dessert we paid around £50... The meal was not worth £20...Very dissapointed.

It filled up pretty quickly between 6pm and 6.30pm mainly because of people going to the theatre. Excellent selection on fixed price menu along with 5-6 specials on the board. £2 supplement for the steak and chips well worth it. Lots to choose from but a little more imagination required on vegetarian options. There are only so much mushrooms a person can take! Perfectly acceptable house white too. Went here pre theatre mainly as it's virtually next door to where we were going - Harold Pinter Threatre ( formerly The Comedy Theatre). Seemed fairly busy and the staff were relatively friendly in an authentic French way as was the service. Went for the set price fixed menu with deep fried mushrooms and steak and chips for the main with gateau for dessert washed down with a carafe of their house red. Steak was a bit chewy in parts but otherwise tasty and cooked rare. House wine nothing special ( hardly surprising maybe). Overall, it was fine and no complaints. If you are looking for basic no frills French food then certainly would recommend and in the area, a predictable tourist trap, you're choices are somewhat constrained.

There are three restaurants next to the Pinter Theatre (Korean, Spanish and French) which is handy when you come out of the play a little bemused. The prix-fix at Le Troisieme is great value and contains items not on the a la carte, but it finishes at 7.30 so...We shared a small charcuterie plate, which was a good portion, enough for 2 people who intended to take desert. I would have liked to see something more imaginative and French than the chorizo and the selections was a little overchilled but tasty. For mains I had a reasonable moules mariniere and pommes frites (which were good and crispy) but my partner had a lovely duck magret a l'orange. It was beautifully pink and juicy and the orange sauce was tangy and light, not gloopy like so many others. They also brought up freshly cooked baguettes while we were on our mains and gave us more without sneaking it onto the bill. I should have known better than to pick crepes suzettes - a hangover from being able to use a chaffing dish to do them properly - as they were more pancakes than crepes and the sauce lacked depth, but they were tasty enough and the creme brulee was good. At £50 for two including a decent house red and a double espresso, I felt it was a good deal for that part of town, though the manager could have been a little more polite to her staff. The French lady on the next table didn't seemed fazed though. Better than average.

Well, I veer towards the scruffy side of the argument. We went there post-theatre for a simple, quick meal and that is what we got. We were in their basement and that has no charm at all. Slightly disappointed that for a theatreland place they had run out of some dishes and specials for the post-theatre trade. There only appears to be a set menu. We both chose garlic mushrooms as a starter. 2 mushrooms per portion was not generous, bu they were good. Could have done with more garlic mayo. My wife's sirloin steak was fine, but they had no Bearnaise sauce, from a jar or otherwise. It was quite clear from the menu that the steak was a £2 supplement.I had a pork cutlet in a well-flavoured grain mustard sauce and the portions were a fair size. Reasonable wine list and 1/2 litre carafes available which is convenient when one of the you is driving. Would I go there again? Maybe, but I wouldn't rush back. A better bet would be the Indian veggie, Woodlands, on the other side of the road or Byrons the excellent burger multiple with a branch around the corner in Haymarket.

Not a good experience. Waitress was useless, couldn't understand a simple order, very slow and inhospitable. Took forever to get our drinks, this was after us explaining what a vodka and cranberry was. When it came to getting the bill another girl took about 20 minutes to sit there and add it up with a calculator and hand write it for us. We asked for it 3 times. What restaurant doesn't have a till in this day and age? The staff seemed more concerned about clearing glasses off empty tables that weren't even being turned around than serving customers. Food was ok but would never go back here, they haven't got a clue.

I went here early in a weekday might before attending a show around the corner. I was the line patron in the restaurant and had my choice of table. I must say that the waitress was helpful. I started off asking for sparkling tester but there was some confusion and I ended up asked for plain ice water. Instead, the waitress's brought a bottle of sparkling water....not explaining that I was buying a large bottle instead of just one glass. Grrrrr.I ordered the salads with lardons only to find that the greens had it been well picked over and there there several slimy bits attached....not appetizing! I had ordered the grilled sirloin with bernaise sauce....what a joke! It arrived as an impossibly thin slice of pulverized meat atop some anaemic-looking chips. On the side was a small Dixie-cup of processed jarred bernaise sauce....really? Seriously? The final insult was that even though I had ordered off the fixed price menu, I was charged 3£ extra for my joke of a steak as I had not noticed the ultra fine print at the bottom of the regular menu even though steak was listed on the specials menu without mention. Grrrr....again! I was charged £3.50 for the water I did not order.Just to illustrate my point abut how bad this meal was.....two nights previously I ate at Barrafina for the exact same price and had an extraordinary meal. This restaurant meal was a travesty. Do NOT stop in here...even though it looks charming from the outside. There is an Italian place around the corner on Haymarket that looks reasonable...go there instead....it has to be better than this place!

There are a lot of restaurants arround this area offering set price menus and we have looked at this menu before, thinking as French would be one to try, however having eaten here and been so dissappointed, I would try elsewhere. The starter of the day Quiche Lorraine, was more of a French onion tart with ham, which could have been wonderful, but was microwaved warm and arrived like floppy soft awful pastry. The soup of the day was spinach, again could be wonderful, but completely tasteless. We both went for the French suasages and chips and ordered the selection of vegetables, which were a small piece of broccolli each andn a small piece of cauliflower that must have had black on before cooking, as it was cut flat across some of the florettes to disguise non too fresh veg. Portion control small, but after this who wants desert anyway?

Booked this restaurant through their website for an anniversary dinner and didn't recieve a confirmation of my booking. When arriving and seeing the run down outside we almost decided to go instead to pizza express across the road. However we decided to give it a try and went inside. There was no one to greet us and so we hung around until eventually a waitress came upstairs. She didn't even offer a greeting, just asked if we had booked. I'm glad we did as couples that came in after us without a booking were given a 'well I guess you can have that table' even though the restaurant was empty. Menus were simply pieces of tired paper. My boyfriend ordered soup to start and it came without bread. When he asked if it would be possible to have some gravy for his mash potato, he was rudely told that this was a Frech restaurant and they do not have gravy. While we waited for our food the waitress stood texting on her phone at the bar. Not once were we asked if the meal was ok. The only good part of the meal was the food quality but portions were small. Prices are not at all competitive, as when we left the two resaturants next door are offering much cheaper two course meals. To add insult to injury 10% service was automatically added to our bill which was absolutley not deserved.

Not great to look at from the outside, but on entering you are transformed from London to Paris and a typical small Parisian Bistro. The restaurant staff are all very friendly making you feel comfortable and welcome. But what makes this so wonderful is the food and the prices. £12.95 for 2 Courses£14.95 for 3 CoursesNot an enormous menu but enough to satisfy most people I would think. The best value in central London.

This little restaurant just off Haymarket is very attractive and feels quite French with a simple decor and simple layout. The staff are very nice and surprisingly were all English (although I expect the chef may be French).Food was very good and portions were not excessive but not too little either. The bill was not a shock at all and the simple 2 or 3 course menu deal is very good with lots of choice.Considering the location this was a very good meal at a reasonable price. I will be back

This tiny little restaurant nestled on a side street just a block away from Piccadilly Circus offered a wonderful quiet, relaxed dinner. Additionally, they were kind enough to package a dinner for my wife who had been unable to join us. They did not provide this in your standard take away styrofoam/cardboard, instead they provided all the food in their china and provided all the silverware which I returned the following day.The owner was extremely generous and all the food fantastic. The service is good though relaxed.

Some of the other reviewers must have been to a differen place. The service from Sophie was very friendly and efficient. (45 minutes for three courses and wine, before a show). The house wine was good value for money. The food had a distinctive French selection and taste (If you like chocolate mousse, it's the best there is) The card machine broke down, and they were happy for us to get the cash from a machine and pay after the show, two hours later. From our experience, I will definitely recommend it.

This restaurant is very close to the Theatre Royal Haymarket and was a good choice for us. We explained that we had to attend a 7 P.M. performance at the theater and the waiter assured us that this would not be a problem. The surroundings are a bit dingy and worn down, but the food was well prepared and flavorful. We ordered a duck pate for an appetizer. This was followed by two entrees, Duck a l'Orange and Chicken with mashed potatoes. The restaurant has two floors, one at ground level and one below ground. There was only one person taking the orders and serving the food. He did a good job of keeping waits short and attending the tables, plus taking care of the bar.

6 of us at dinner agreed the food quality was poor ( and a bit mean). Wine was fair along with the atmosphere but there is much better available, even in this area. It is quite cheap, but so is the quality, and we expect a lot of people are getting a quick meal before the theatre as the place pretty much emptied by 7.30/8. There's a good pub opposite! Wouldn't eat here again or recommend it.

This was our second visit and I still cannot rate this restaurant highly enough - it is excellent. Henri and his staff are charming and friendly and the food is superb. Last time we had the set menu but this time we ate off the a la Carte menu as we were celebrating. The Duck a l'Orange was the best I have ever tasted! We weren't in a hurry, and they didn't rush us, despite the fact that within a short time of us arriving at 5pm the place was almost full. It is so good to find an individual restaurant so close to theatreland and the Royal Academy - it beats those chain restaurants into a cocked hat! This is the London restaurant we will aim for when we visit - where is their Michelin star???!!!

We so enjoyed every aspect of this meal including the charming French staff and it feeling genuinely French. Food was good - not spectacular but excellent for the price. We ended up lingering over wine and cheese and only reluctantly went back to our hotel.

A girlfriend and I had lunch here in preference to the array of all the 'chain restaurants' that abound in Leicester square. We both had a delicious meal, were looked after with typical french charm, and left feeling we had had really good value for money. Thoroughly recommend it to anyone looking for something real among the 'high street norm', pre-theatre.

We walked past the steak houses and chain restaurants, looking down the side streets for a 'real' restaurant for lunch before our theatre matinee. The menu and prices at LeTroisieme looked good, so we thought would give it a try. So glad we did! The restaurant itself is an oasis of calm away from the hustle and bustle of Piccadilly. The food was very good indeed and the service was friendly and prompt. Brie with blackcurrant sauce, French Onion soup, steak & frites, fish, creme caramel - all were delicious. At only £12.95 for 2 courses or £14.95 for 3 courses- how do they do it?We have already recommended this restaurant to friends, and will definitely return next time we go to the theatre in London.

We had booked a table for 5 people to celebrate my husbands birthday. The table was not ready when we arrived. The waiter hastily pulled 2 tables, that should really only seat 2 people each, together at the back of the restaurant and the 5 of us tried to squeeze around them. As we are all tall people it was very cramped and uncomfortable! There wasn't enough room on the table for food and drinks for 5 people either. The food was ok, the surroundings certainly shabby. We will not be recommending this restaurant.

Booked a table for 6 people at 18:30 and ended up running an hour late and having an extra person in the group. The restaurant still accommodated us and managed to squeeze us in. The menu was varied and extramely good value for money. The fish soup was amazing and would definately have that again. One of the party if our group was a chef and can be hard to please but even he was fully satisfied. Everything about the experience was great. You could even begin to believe that you were in a Parisienne bistro. Spot on. I shall return.

I ate here before a show in the west end. I only ate here because of the proximity to the theater. The food is store bought and little seems to be made from scratch. You will not get authenticity here if that's what you're looking for. I ordered the 2-plate special (pate & merguez). My merguez was raw when it was brought out the first time. I sent it back and they happily cooked them longer. Service was very nice and helpful. Quick if you are looking for something fast before a show.

Don`t think they mentioned the `soupe d`poisson` though, as good as i have eaten anywhere and it is my `test dish`. Will be there tomorrow.

This is a great place to eat before a show in the West End, without London prices. If you've eaten out in any town or village in France you will recognise the shabby chic decor and the amazing aromas percolating from the kitchen! Pleasant helpful staff, fast service for those eating to a deadline without compromising on quality! At 2 courses for £12.95 four people can fill up with gorgeous tasty no frills French Cuisine, including a couple of glasses of house wine for under £90. Duck pate, fried brie, salmon tartare, garlic mushrooms feature as starters, entrecotes and frites, moules frites, chicken in a mushroom and cream sauce, were some of the mains. There is a more adventurous A La Carte menu for those who want to linger longer! To my mind this was far superior to the chain steak/pizza places which abound just round the corner and judging from the number of times the phone rang for bookings while we ate, the locals have discovered its delights too. Unreservedly recommended!
