Banquet 1408 in Colchester

I treated my son to dinner here whilst visiting him in Colchester. To start we shared Crispy Duck which was lovely. Next time we’ll treat ourselves to their really traditional Peking Duck! To follow I had Crispy Noodles with Seafood and my son had Beef in Black Bean Sauce with Singapore Noodles. All were delicious with huge portions - everyone was taking food home. Service was excellent. We’ll be back.

Food was great - varied menu , great flavour and good portions. However, we suffered an adverse reaction afterwards which had all the hallmarks of being caused by msg. The only time in over 30 years of Chinese meals from many restaurants and takeaways that that has ever happened.

A friend’s 60th birthday and we went for a dim sum lunch where they were very accommodating and food was lovely! Will certainly go back again!

We booked the function room for my 50th birthday. There were around 25 of us. The food was amazing and hot. Thank you so much to Kevin and his team for looking after us so well. My guests were all commenting on how good the food and the function room in general was. We had a slight delay getting to the restaurant from Ipswich owing to a problem on the A12 dual carriageway. We rang Kevin en route and he was very helpful and made sure that drinks and starters were given to our guests. Thank you Banquet for making my 50th birthday so memorable

We booked the function room in advance for our family birthday celebration. We were to be about 30 strong. We were given access to the room to decorate it,an opportunity to discuss vegetarian and gluten free guests and the menu in general. On the night the food was exceptionally good, hot and served by at least 3 lovely waiting staff. We have no hesitation in recommending Banquets and thank the whole team for making our party so happy and successful.

This is one of the best Chinese restaurants I have been too, top quality food and service is also top quality. The wine list is also very reasonably priced. Will certainly go again soon.

This restaurant is great for both celebrations as well as just if you love great quality, fantastic flavoursome Chinese cuisine. The service from beginning to end is exemplary as is the menu, with both set and al a carte. The restaurant were also very flexible with even the set menu, and lucky for us 25% discount, definitely visit again 👌

Another superb meal with excellent quality food and good atmosphere. We especially enjoyed the deserts : Charcoal Lava Buns, Banana Fritters. Look forward to coming back soon.

Very large restaurant but advise to book in advance as packed on an early Saturday evening. Plenty of choice including around 8 set menus. We had the Hong Kong set for 4 people. So much food. Good efficient service and lovely food. Very relaxed there.

Hadn’t been here for years so thought I’d give it a go again. Previously it was absolutely delicious. Wow! How different it is now. Really rude waiting staff, all flapping around making for a really uncomfortable dining experience. The food is bland & cold. The soft shell crab starter was over cooked & chewy, the asparagus was bland. Prawn crackers tasted stale. Our mains were Szechuan chicken, sweet and sour prawns in batter & chicken chow mein. The chicken dish was inedible, bland, water injected chicken, awful. Didn’t get the prawns in batter, just prawns in an overly sweet sauce & the chicken chow mein tasted as though somebody had pre eaten it & spat it in a bowl, absolutely gross! We left pretty much all of our meal & the waitress asked if we would like to take it home…I replied ‘no’, she asked if we enjoyed it & I explained that it was not good, she just shrugged her shoulders. The team are just keen to throw your food at you & get you gone ready for the next sitting. A very bad experience & will never return!

Another really good evening with excellent food and good service. Would recommend the sweet and sour pork dish with pineapple rice and cashews.

I went to the banquet Saturday night for an early dinner 6-45. And the restaurant was virtually full already. It’s a very busy place but credit to all the food , service, and general running of the business is excellent. Well done all see you again soon.

We had an absolutely wonderful meal at Banquet, the food, service and atmosphere were all fantastic. There was nothing I could fault about the meal and I recommend the Hong Kong Set Menu if you should visit. I’ll definitely be back again soon.

We had lunch at banquet today. We have been coming to the restaurant 15 years. Very disappointed today very first time. We asked they under staff as might of explaining of poor service. But they were fully staffed. We received 3 out of 4 starters we had no plate to eat off so had to ask as starter was getting cold waiting for to call waiter. Waited 40 mins for our main course. Asked about missing starter they cooked that we just had with main. Again had to ask for plate to then to start our main. The table cloth was paper and napkin. They always been cloth. We had to ask more tea as the tea pot wasn’t filled. The food wasn’t up to the standard we always had. Wondering it’s changed hands. Just very disappointed after coming here over 15 years. Won’t be returning anytime soon.

1408 is just superb. We decided to celebrate Chinese New Year by booking a table at 1408 a week in advance. The booking system was easy to follow, the responses were extremely fast, and the communication was seamless. Upon arrival, we announced our booking and were shown to a table very quickly. We asked to move a short distance to another more convenient table, and it was no trouble at all. Due to the Chinese New Year, the decorations were exquisite and matched the occasion, and the restaurant soon became very full, and eventually, there was a queue at the door. The waiting staff were plentiful, and we were advised to order all our dishes to come together. Otherwise, there would be a long wait between courses (this was unusual compared to other visits,so it must have been because of the influx of people to celebrate New Year) We were given the dim sum and main menu and made our choices. We took a photo of the order sheet to verify the order quantities and price (mistakes do happen, and this can help to eliminate them) The food arrived quite quickly, was freshly prepared, hot, plentiful, tasted sublime, and we enjoyed each dish thoroughly. Even though it was busy, the food quality was superb still, and the staff were excellent. There was a small mix-up with our tea order, but this was rectified smoothly and easily. The bill for us came to just under £100 (including a tip), so it's wasn't cheap, but the food quality, texture, taste, and authenticity are the best we've found (outside top tier quality Chinese restuarants in major cities within Chinese communities, such as London, etc.) A really excellent meal, at a superb restaurant, with brilliant food, and professional staff. Highly recommended.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when a friend said she’d chosen this restaurant for her birthday meal. I’d read a number reviews and some of them weren’t good, to say the least, but I couldn’t have been more pleasantly surprised – it was great! I found absolutely nothing that the bad reviews had warned against, indeed I wondered if the reviewers had been dining in the same restaurant. We chose one of the set dinners, with a number of additional items, it was all delicious, appeared freshly prepared and was served by a number of different staff who were all friendly and attentive. Despite the restaurant being very busy, from the moment we walked in we were made to feel that nothing was too much trouble – when we asked what time they closed we were told “when you leave”. There was a great atmosphere throughout the evening and looking around during our meal the other diners seemed to be enjoying the experience as much as we were – I’d be more than happy to dine in this restaurant again and would have no hesitation in recommending it to others.

Loved banquet since I was a teenager cooking with my parents, and I’ve been coming back ever since with friends, husband and colleague. As a real lover of authentic Chinese, this is the best in Colchester in my opinion (and spoken from a Chinese background). Their Dim Sum is always so good!

Went there with my wife to celebrate my birthday. Order some dim sum dishes and a noodle and rice dish. The rice was tasteless and had to be sent back for another dish. The dim sum never arrived but the couple next to us who arrived much later got their dim sum dishes. We compliant and decided to cancel our dim sum order but was charged and had to have the bill readjusted. A very disappointing experience and won’t coming back again any time soon.

Went here with my daughters for a family meal out. Sadly I was disappointed. The food it self was very good but I felt that we were rushed to eat our meal with a feeling that they wanted our table for any further bookings. The second we had finished our starter , staff were clearing our table & mains were bought out. No warmer for the dishes so food did get cold quite quickly. Three times I informed staff of one of us who had a serious nut allergy... twice a bowl of nuts was placed on our table! Once our meal was finished , within seconds everything was scoped up, tablecloth taken away & staff hovering for us to pay our bill & we hadn't even finished our drinks! Staff not particularly attentive or polite. We had left overs which I asked to take home, the waiter came back with a carrier bag & two takeaway containers & plonked them on the table & walked off! Definitely wouldn't rush back, I personally think this restaurant is overpriced, staff abrupt & doesn't live up the hype of which I was expecting.

A very poor experience at this usually good chinese, I think they had just overbooked. Totally forgot my vegetarian dish, so I sat with a bowl of rice while everyone else ate their food, mine finally arrived 30 mins later and was not the best! Such a shame as it's been good in the past

Really disappointing. The seafood starter was disgusting. The mixed starter was inedible, and the main courses we couldn't eat. My wife literally had half a spring roll and a spoonful of seaweed. £110 for 2 starters and 2 mains. Absolute rip-off. Will never go back.

Unfortunately extremely disappointed, starters great but mains not. Service for mains poor and cold food . Ordered 4 dishes for mains, 3 came out a good temperature no hot plates to put food on. 4th dish took ages to come. No apology for big delay. It arrived, pork was too pink & cold, duck warm. It got sent back, rest of food was getting cold. Eventually came back after about 10 mins. No apology still. It was clearly reheated as it wss served as a mess. Other 3 dishes now cold. As a birthday meal, we were so disappointed. We actually left loads as cold. My husband spoke to same waiter and said its all now cold, we got told Chinese people like it cold. He left all plates in front of us for over 10 minutes to speak to someone. No apology again, he said taken a dish off the bill. Then given dessert menu. Totally had enough by then. Lady gave me a small cheesecake & candle for birthday. Its not about the bill. Its Service and quality of food. Also 4 tables & staff coughing because sizzler meals wth chilli smoked room out. Mens toilets were dirty. Didn't go to ladies after my husband was disgusted with mens.

Four of us visited the Banquet for dinner, and we all left with a lot less money and food poisoning! Very expensive meal for what it is (especially when you end up ill! :( )

I won’t be visiting this restaurant again. The last two times myself and my partner had bad overnight reactions to all the MSG put in the food - I felt like I’d been drinking all night, massive hangover banging headache, my other half was sick. This has happened twice now - once when we ate in and more recently on takeaway. We haven’t experienced anything so bad with other chinese restaurants (if we go visit family/friends). It’s such a shame as the food is nice whilst eating it, it’s the after effects that have now put us off for good. If you’re not sure what MSG is, just Google it

After visiting this restaurant for approx 10 years, we visited recently for a family birthday and to say we are disappointed is a huge understatement and it will be our last visit. We ordered a variety of dim sum and noddles to share which worked out at £45 a head (incl drinks). Whilst quite pricey, We don't mind paying that much if the food is nice but most of it was bad quality. The pork shumai was disgusting and honestly inedible, the chicken feat in black bean sauce came out red in colour like it had been curried, furthermore the seafood had the taste of ammonia. The Vietnamese spring rolls had changed since our last visit, and whilst they were fine, they were not as tasty as before. We heard the dimsum chef had recently not been working and dim sum was off the menu for a period of time and we can only assume that the chef must have left. Also we only arrived at 1pm (opens at 12) yet one third of the dishes were sold out and marked off the dim sum menu. One other complaint is that after 10 years of regularly visiting this restaurant, no current staff have ever made an effort to ask our name or even acknowledge we have been before which we never minded before when the food was tasty. We are young and non-chinese in terms of ethnicity and we saw the restaurant staff greet other customers with a lot more acknowledgement and we even saw they knew the table next to us "regular" order which is ironic since we are also regulars. Seemed like they never made any effort to greet us. Will avoid from here on out.

Lovely hot food with perfectly sizes portions. All of the usual favourites, just a higher quality meal and much tastier than your standard local chinese

We have been visiting Banquet for years but today is the last time we will visit. All I can say is that this reputable place has gone beyond down hill. We were a family group of 4 out for a get together. We ordered dishes off the menu rather than the set menu. We were firstly asked if we’d like prawn crackers to which we replied yes please, but had we known we would be charged £4 for the pleasure! What a rip off! Most other places offer these complimentary. Then we attempted to order the mixed hors d'oeuvre for one to be told it was minimum of 2 people which it didn’t mention on the menu. When challenged we were told it states this in Chinese below the item. I said I didn’t read Chinese and that it was misleading. No apology. We ordered the dimsum platter as I remembered in the past these were homemade delicious delights. Disappointing beyond belief. Sticky. Soggy, small and bland. Certainly not worth £14.50 When a main dish arrived which was supposed to be a chicken and cashew nut affair in ‘a crispy rice nest’ we asked where the nest was to be told ‘we don’t do that any more’. No apology or asking if we’d like a rice side dish. The crispy duck was chopped so finely it was i determinable and quite fatty, not particularly hot and so disappointing. We felt the serving staff watching us eating to see how quickly they could turn the table around. They cleared plates whilst some people were still Eating which in the UK is just down right rude. We won’t be retuning

Our 1st visit to Banquet and we will definitely be going back. A friendly relaxed atmosphere, with a mixture of couples and families in the restaurant and we were well looked after by the staff. Most importantly though, the food was fantastic (I would recommend the King Prawns in Chilli and Garlic), but everything we had was flavoured well cooked well. A must visit if you are in the Colchester area and looking for a great meal.

Great spot for family recreation...however services ay improved by introducing some bistro ( maxican cusine) .

Second visit to this establishment with family from America. Our waitress was very attentive & friendly compared to our previous visit. Our dim sum selections were as expected especially the shui-mi which were larger than most restaurants. Well done to the management, shall return when next visiting Colchester for a family reunion.

Once a week My dad and I like to treat ourselves to a meal out. I have been eating at the Banquet for many year. But I would say in the past 6mnths each visit we have noticed the poor quality of the food. The last straw was last Saturday I ordered crispy chillie beef. All I can say was, it tasted stale. Was dark in colour so know it had been reheated. I sent it back, the manager came over and instead of saying I'm sorry wld you like a fresh one cooked? All he said was, I have a new chef!!!! Errrr and your point is?? So after spending £50 on a plate of noodles and some veg. That will be the last time we eat there. So sad as we loved the atmosphere, staff lovely. But when resturants cut corners like this I'm afraid your customers do notice...

What a fabulous find. All those years we travelled to London and this is just 30 minutes away. Fantastic.

We had the private function room for my dad’s 80th this Saturday evening for no extra cost and her personal waitress and her sidekick were absolutely fantastic. Very smiley friendly accommodating and nothing was too much trouble. My dad felt very spoilt and we had lots of things to entertain him during the evening which could’ve interrupted service and the staff were very accommodating to our party, I can’t recommend them highly enough to use the spare room for a party of 30 guests. We were able to get in an hour beforehand to decorate the room and move things around a little bit to our taste and this was not any trouble. Jason, the coordinator of the event prior to the day was very attentive and made sure he got back to us on more than one occasion to reassure us that the things we had asked for would happen. There was a TV so we could put a PowerPoint presentation of photos and they allowed us to put things up in the room with no trouble. I would certainly use them again and I can’t recommend them highly enough. It’ll be nice to go there for a meal just as couples .. the food was very very lovely and all the guests commented how tasty and plentiful the food was. Thank u team Banquet !

On our way home from Braintree so I suggested stopping here for some food as a treat, It's a nice venue but is just a food hall really, food was okay but too expensive for what you actually have and doesnt come any close to their Mizu restaurants. had chilli beef but this was really poor and almost inedible, smoked chicken (looked like seafood!) wife wasnt blown away by hers either. Basically you're best off avoiding this place and going to their Mizu branches where the food and choice is superior.

We booked for a family Sunday lunch. The food is great. We ordered a load of different Dim Sum dishes (and a couple of dishes off the main menu). It was all excellent, with a perfect level of attentiveness from the team serving us. Pleasantly surprised at the bill and it was pointed out that the tip was already in. Great integrity as I hadn’t noticed. We will definitely be back. Can’t recommend highly enough. Thank you.

Don’t eat here, don’t waste your money, don’t get conned out of your money by paying on card.My other half was served a drink in a chipped glass that cut her mouth and at the end of the meal the waiter overcharged us and forced us to leave a tip. The food was below average and overpriced it is in no way as good as it once was maybe this is them trying to recoup money after the lockdowns but this restaurant has gone down hill badly and we definitely will not be returning.

We enjoyed another delicious family dinner at this popular restaurant. They have never let us down. The food is always freshly prepared and the portion size is good. There are cheaper restaurants around, but the quality of the food and service here is second to none.

If I could give this 6/5 I would. It was incredible. We had the Shanghai set menu and the portions are huge and the quality is outstanding. The food comes quickly and it’s all fresh and absolutely delicious. The staff are so lovely, one of the waiters helped teach me to use chopsticks which was amazing! The staff are very attentive and constantly come to clear your stuff as soon as you’re done so you aren’t sitting with dirty plates in front of you, they’re also super kind and chatty and make you feel so comfortable. My favourite dish was probably the scallops but everything we had was perfect, nothing to fault at all! If you’re reading this because you’re considering booking then book it you won’t be disappointed !!!!!!

We had not tried this place since it changed hands a few years ago so decided to get a takeaway (as there was still no eating in because of the pandemic). Always difficult to review when it's a new regime as there's always the inevitable comparisons with how it was before. Perfectly good food, although nothing along the lines of cashew nuts with yellow bean sauce (our favourites) so I guess anything else was bound not to hit the mark quite so much. Having said that, it's perfectly good food, well prepared and tasty. Probably a little more expensive than we'd normally expect for a takeaway but then this place is usually renowned for its eat in dining.

Perhaps the best Chinese meal we've had recently, certainly since our visits to San Francisco of recent years. Lovely relaxed surroundings and super friendly staff who treated us like old friends even though it was our first visit. Food was extra fresh and extremely tasty. Despite living in London we will be back soon.

After the partial easing of lockdown restrictions, we were really looking forward to eating here again.Currently, booking is essential, there's outside dining only, they have limited opening hours and a reduced menu. We booked by phone, as there's no option to book online. Confirmation via email arrived quickly after we booked. On the day we went, the traffic on the way was heavily snarled up, so we had to phone en-route to ensure we could still keep our table. No problem! Arrived and we're escorted to the rear garden. Seated under a large gazebo with plenty of overhead heating. Presented with a tick-box dim sum menu from which we ordered our favourite dishes. Took a photo of the completed form before giving it in, and I'm glad we did, as we were given one dish belonging to the next table over by mistake. We did have a quick laugh and the mistake was rectified very easily, with no fuss. The staff were superb. Attentive, but not cloying, great with their customers and very, very efficient. As ever, the food quality was very good. We had 2 dishes that weren't quite right (slight over cooking), but didn't say anything, as everything else was brilliant. Tasty, fresh, and delicious. A real gem of a restaurant, but not cheap eats. £75 for 2 of us, and money we'll spent. Thank you!

Managed to get a table outside table on Sunday lunch for dim sum. Really good ,safe set up in the marquee with lots of heaters. Staff lovely as ever and the food brilliant. Great to get back there and it was lovely to be amongst people all enjoying themselves. The dim sum was as always delicious and the stand out was the bbq mixed meats. The crispy noodles always deliver and the steamed dumplings sublime. Let’s hope we can now just get back to eating there time and time again, really pleased they remain open and servin* the same delicious food they have always done.

We visited at lunch on a Tuesday as it was my husbands birthday and I wanted to take him somewhere special. We were warmly welcomed to a lovely marquee which is heated with lights in as well and would look lovely at night. The covid procedures are all well followed and we felt very safe. The staff were as attentive as ever and the food is insanely good. My husband has worked in Hong Kong and says their food is as good as he had when working there. Cannot fault the team and the food- a perfect birthday lunch which felt special.

Takeaway treat (restaurant prices but worth every penny) We were unable to use the website to order but staff were very helpful on the phone. Delivery was prompt and the food was hot. Every dish was fresh and of exceptional quality. We will definitely be booking a table and recommending to friends and family. Delicious!

I found ordering food on your website really easy and convenient. The program was very well written and user-friendly. I'm going to use it regularly in the future.
