Banh Bao Brothers in Lambeth

This place was genuinely the worst place I have ever eaten. To start the menu online is not the menu In store We ordered a couple of cocktails, heavily overpriced. My old fashioned was served in dirty glasses. Perfectly priced at £15 per drink. On to the the food. Starters were spring rolls, clearly bought from Iceland, soggy and tasteless and drenched in sweet chilli sauce to mask the the lack of flavour. Mains; "Korean fried" chicken. Something I never thought I'd find on a Vietnamese menu. But nonetheless the picture on the menu looked good. However we were served with one piece of oven fried chicken thigh with a large serving of sticky rice. I have travelled all over Asia and never once has any chef paired Thai sticky rice with "Korean fried chicken" and of course to cover up the lack of flavour again, an abundance of sweet chilli sauce was generously lathered across both the sticky rice and the 'Korean fried chicken' . All this for the low low price of £24 for 2. Sides, I ordered a bao bun with pulled pork, also not Vietnamese but when in Rome. The bun was soggy, moist at best, the pork tasteless and unseasoned all for £7. Our entire meal with drinks came up to a grand total eye watering £82 This place is a scam, as others suggested, it is not Vietnamese, nor is it Korean, nor is it Thai or Chinese for that matter. In fact if any member of the Asian community where go here they would immediately walk back out. The chef should be ashamed of themselves and should probably pick up a cook book or maybe spend sometime at a Vietnamese hawker stall and learn a thing or two. I am happy offer some recommendations.

From the second we walked in, the service was impeccable. It was almost 9pm when we came and the kitchen closes at 9 - we technically should have been denied food but the owner welcomed us with open arms. We had a baby with us and had been turned away from various restaurants around London because of this that evening so I can’t describe the relief when the amazing staff greeted us with smiles and a high chair. Food was delicious, fresh and incredibly moreish but the highlight for us was the staff. Our daughter made many friends in the wonderful people who worked there (along with some other guests). I have never felt more welcome in a restaurant with our daughter before. We will definitely be visiting again. Thank you!

Please don't eat here. In addition to being generally awful , the owner is a scammer. Check out their hygiene rating and you'll see this restaurant is not even clean. Avoid at all costs.

Food was pretty terrible (mixture of cold and inedible). Waited several hours for it. Drinks never arrived Appreciate there were staffing issues but if you can’t provide a half decent experience than don’t bother opening. So disappointing

Came here for my brothers birthday, served by Samrina who was very friendly and offered us great service, my brother felt special on his birthday with drinks and great food. Great atmosphere and really cool venue, we’ll be back!

Went for dinner last night and had a really lovely time with my friends. We were made to feel so welcome by the waitresses who were really friendly and attentive. A couple of us have allergies and they were so good at checking with the chef. Could not have asked for better service! The location was great, so different to usual restaurants. The atmosphere was fab and the food really nice. Loved the buns! Thanks for a great night.

The music was loud and ruined the atmosphere. We found all the dishes were average and expensive considering this. The Bao buns (lamb) lacked any flavour and were soggy. This was surprising given the buns were most of the menu. My friend couldn’t finish his it was so bad.

This is located in the Leake Street Arches which is worth a visit on its own. I had the mango salad, Korean hot wings and lamb bao bun. All were excellent but the mango salad was the winner. I would highly recommend a visit.

It was Utter chaos just like some other reviews I’ve seen here. Awful awful service from start to finish. I called up to book a table and from the minute they picked up they sounded out of control. I asked to book a table, the waiter wrote down the time and number of people but didn’t ask for my name, so when I prompted him, I got half way through spelling my name before he hung up. I was not convinced they had our booking so I called up a few days before to check, and the waiter shouted down the phone, again sounding completely chaotic that they didn’t have the booking and to book online. So I booked on their website. On the evening of the booking we turned up, i said my name and that we had a booking, they had no idea. I was fed up before we even sat down and that was just the start. They sat us upstairs (despite there being plenty of room downstairs…) and it was so dark we had to use our phone lights to light up the table. We ordered some tap water, 7 glasses came but no tap water. We tried to order wine, they came out with a prosecco and a bottle of white. They only had one bottle of white for the whole restaurant.. no rose or red either. So we ordered that and took some beers too which arrived completely warm. You would think they would stock up on beer if they were out of all other drinks? We ordered but after we had the waitress came back and said they were out of edamame, pork belly baos, aubergine curry and only had 3 prawn baos left. We ordered what we could but were very disappointed. The food however was lovely. It’s such a shame as the place really has potential, but the staff didn’t have a CLUE what was going on, they were out of many things, wine fridge not stocked up and just a general lack of common sense. Won’t be going back unfortunately. It was a work dinner which I booked so was embarrassing for me aswell.

Horrific experience. No beers, out of 7 dishes we ordered only 3 were available. A Complete waste of evening which ended up in us leaving after half an hour. The staff have absolutely no idea. Absolute shambles

Wanted to visit this place since it opened and I quite simply could never imagine to be this disappointed. We sat down and ordered 3 beers and the waitress told us there was no bottled nor drought beer. Disappointing, however not disastrous… yet. We then ordered the majority of the menu, as it was tapas and they recommend 3 to 4 plates per person. Five minutes after ordering we were informed that they had no edamame, which we accepted and asked for this to be taken off of our bill. After one minute another waitress informed us there was no edamame, which we already knew - Poor communication between the staff, always a red flag. Another five minutes passed and we were informed that they didn’t have the ingredients for the aubergine curry. Myself and my friends agreed that we would be leaving if another item was unavailable or missing. About five minutes later we were told that they had no pork belly bao’s. We were offered something else on the menu but I told them we will be leaving. They didn’t argue with this and agreed to get the bill for the drinks we had. Before they brought the card reader over we were then told the food we ordered (the dishes they did have in stock) were now ready. I said no we wouldn’t be paying for them nor eating here as we were so disappointed. We paid and they apologised. To summarise: The service was a total shambles. They didn’t know how to run a restaurant. Having very little to offer food wise especially not having pork belly bao’s, when bao is in the restaurant’s name, is insulting. I have never walked out of a restaurant before eating, and I cannot describe how disappointed I am. If you do eat here, and you have the same experience, leave and go to the Thai restaurant down the road. We had a great time there.

Horrific experience from start to end. No pina colada, freezing temperatures and drug lighting in the toilet. The chicken? Still clucking. The bao itself, more like a burger. Only thing I’d recommend is the prawn crackers and dip, likely from nearby Co-op. £50 for a less than enjoyable experience. Never again.

This is a bit of a weird place - situated in an arch in Leake Street. It's a bit dank and cold, hey ho. Staff friendly but not enough of them - so everything was sloooow. Our visit was OK but I don't think I'd go back. Sigh...

The music was very loud and almost put us off, however we decided to stay despite the night club vibe. I like quirky but this was strange...with its dark steel walls and cherry blossom. The food came quickly ( before the drinks in fact! ) and was very tasty but we were shocked a tiny 'mango salad' that cost £7.50! I definitely recommend this spot for a nice evening out. Their selection of asian tapas food is yummy. You should try their pulled beef boa, shrimp tempuras and pork belly.
